Who covers balance-billing when there is protection in verbiage of a benefit-decision letter? Insurance

Who covers balance-billing when there is protection in verbiage of a benefit-decision letter?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 01:54 AM PDT

I just received a notification from Aetna through Amazon that they have decided to cover procedures from an out-of-network doctor as in-network.

Additionally, I was told by the member services rep that there is guaranteed coverage for the procedures that were approved due to the following language being present in the approval letter, "you may be protected from balance billing for these services". It was explained that there is a rate that Aetna believes a procedure may cost and the rate that the surgeon's office is charging and that you are normally billed the difference.

Again I was explicitly told that with this clause in the benefit decision letter, it actually would guarantee that either Amazon or Aetna would be obligated to pay the difference once I call and explain that there is a deficiency and would be taken care of. Has anyone run into that before or heard of that verbiage being used and do you know if Amazon would be payign the difference?

What would happen if, god-forbid, I left Amazon and just paid with COBRA? Would I still be protected from balance-billing? Much love!!!

Studying for CPCU500. In your experience, are BDU online only course & SmartQuizMe app enough to cover the actual exam?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 10:44 PM PDT

I am currently out of the country and studying for CPCU500. I bought the BDU online only course (no textbook since they don't ship internationally) and have completed all the modules, quizzes, and practice exam within a week. I also bought the SmartQuizMe app quiz and completed all of them. I have done well in all the exams and quizzes but I'm skeptical whether they've tailored them to only the contents covered in the BDU video modules (since I have passed all the quizzes and exam with only watching the modules once). In your experience, how similar or different is the actual exam compared to BDU practice exam and the SmartQuizMe? Am I being misled on the lack of difficulty or is the 500 not very difficult?

    Thanks!

Massive tree fell through home. Hire public adjuster or not?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 12:53 PM PDT

I am completely lost when it comes to this situation and would appreciate any help. A large tree recently hit our home and caused some pretty significant damage. We're expecting close to 200k in damage. Our insurance company is known as being one of the best, but our adjuster has been very stingy with the claim and quoted us about 130k. Currently, we're trying to decide if we could do the negotiations ourselves to get more money or if it's worth it to pay 10% for a public adjuster to do it for us. 10% seems like a lot for a six figure claim. I am in Atlanta, Ga.

    Hit and Run

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 09:06 PM PDT

My partner drove my car to get to work today, and on his way home he was rear ended on the highway and the other person took off. He is not a driver listed on my insurance. We are in CT. What should I expect to happen? I'm assuming since he's not listed insurance will not help repair anything that needs repairing, is that accurate?

Received notice from an insurance company that my car was involved in an accident but I have no recollection of such an event.

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 04:42 PM PDT

I live in NY and I assume this accident was in NY as well. I received three letters a few days ago from an insurance company stating that I was involved in an accident with one of their policyholders around 7 weeks ago. Other than the date of the accident the only information provided is the policyholder's name and the claim number. Everything else on the report of accident sheet is blank and now I'm wondering what I should do next. Should I give the agent listed a call for more information or should I wait a bit to see if I get a letter from my own insurance company?

    Car Insurance for a 16 y/o

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 11:02 PM PDT

So I'm 16 and looking to start a project on an 85 Porsche 944 and was wondering if anyone could give me a decent range on how much basic level car insurance would cost. It could also be under my parents quote if that reduces the price at all. Ive never once had an incident of any kind and live in los angeles. Sorry if this is an incredibly stupid question, this just seemed like the right sub

Just passed the P&C Licensing Exam & I don’t know what to do

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 10:43 PM PDT

I'm a full time college student and the company (independent agency) I am currently interning for just recently paid for me to take my 52 hour course and P&C exam.

I just took and passed the exam last week and still need to do fingerprints and fill out an application?

The thing is, I just got hired on for a new underwriting internship with a different company (insurance company). I start soon and I don't think having a P&C license is necessary for this position.. Well, I know it's not.

Do I still go through with the fingerprinting and application to receive the actual license? Do I need to have a job that will utilize the license in order to receive one?

I would hate to waste everything just because it's not needed at the time. And I would really hate having the take that exam again. I'm at a lost for what to do.

If I didn't include necessary info to help provide advice, let me know please. I'm kinda new to this insurance world.

    BTW I'm based in California

    Title Insurance

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 11:54 AM PDT

Need some help understanding my policy and when I called the company they wouldn't tell me if something was covered or not. I have an ALTA Homeowners Policy of Title Insurance 02-03-10, generic document linked https://www.alta.org/policy-forms/download.cfm?formID=462&type=word

I have a question, it says the covered risks include: 18) you are forced to remove or remedy your existing structures- other than boundary walls or fences/ because any portion was built without obtaining a building permit from the proper government office.

So does this mean if I find something unpermitted on my property and I am required to remedy it by my local government, I can submit this as a claim subject to the payout terms in my contract?

    Thanks for any help!

American Resident with a Canadian Car Looking for Advice

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 03:38 PM PDT

Hey everyone - I hope this is an appropriate question for this subreddit. I'm in a very weird situation and most agents I've talked to haven't been very helpful, but the hivemind sometimes comes through in situations like this.

Basically - I was abroad for study and I moved back to America about a year ago, bringing with me my Canadian car.

Because of the pandemic and the weird border situation, I've kept it down here with me much longer than I meant to. Long enough to to run into problems with my Canadian car insurance. It was an extremely frustrating company to deal with and I was ok to let it go.

Now I'm sitting here with an American drivers License, living in America, trying to re-insure this Canadian car so I can drive it back up to Alberta for a funeral, and to sell the car. Nobody wants to touch this situation with a ten-foot pole, and after talking to several people I was recommended Broadform insurance, which sounds like exactly what I need - only the only local provider I can find is also a very notoriously scummy and infamous chain.

What exactly do I do in this situation? I've called the large chains and I've talked to some local agents and everybody is basically like "yeah wow, that's weird. can't help you!"

TL.DR : American Drivers License, Canadian Car, trying to get the car back from the US to Canada before things become too complicated.

    Life Insurance Application: Doctor's Visits

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 04:46 PM PDT

Filling out life insurance application forms, one question relates to any doctor's visits and another any prescription medications.

Last month I had a cut large enough to receive stitches, however I didn't actually go to a clinic or anything: a family friend helped stitch me up and she also prescribed an antibiotic for me.

Maybe I am thinking about this too much, but did I technically go to the doctor here? Will I need put it down as doctor visit? Or I just need to put down the prescription?

    Thanks.

    Automobile was stolen

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 04:40 PM PDT

A year ago my car was stolen and totaled. Insurance pressed charges on suspect as they were in jail and are in a treatment program at the moment. The suspect gave me the exact amount of money insurance paid out on my claim. Can I give insurance company that money so they drop the charges? I am in Nevada

Do I have to fix my car right away?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 08:08 PM PDT

I'm in California. I received the check from Insurance just over a month ago. I'm going to fix my car but was waiting to so some things first before I dropped it off at the shop. My question is, does it matter when I take it in for repair? Keep in mind I'm still financing my car.

    Fender Bender

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 08:07 PM PDT

So I got into a accident today where I rear ended someone. Very minor, we both pulled over I apologized and gave him my insurance information. I realized after the fact that I mistakenly gave him an old card with an old policy number and vehicle. I did let him take a picture of my current registration so I'm hoping my insurance can match up my name with my license plate and VIN and go that way.

This is my mistake and I need to own it. Will he be able to file a claim easily? I didn't get any information from him so what would be the best to contact him?

Proof of Loss Statement--whence the values?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 07:37 PM PDT

TLDR: Does the insurance company provide the replacement cost of damage and actual cash value of damage for the dwelling and the actual cash value for personal property for the Proof of Loss Statement, or do homeowners hire outside appraisers/adjusters to calculate those values?

My parents lost everything in a house fire three months back in Utah. Unfortunately, they've been having a very difficult time communicating with their insurance adjuster and have felt in the dark through the whole ordeal. The months are passing and they have not been given permission to tear the house down because the insurance company is attempting to sue a series of other companies--first one of the companies that makes some power tools my dad owned, and now the company that made the LED lightbulbs they were using. It's a mess and seems to be much of the reason the insurance company isn't providing my parents with much concrete information about the state of their claim.

Which brings me to the Proof of Loss Statement. My parents are having a hard time getting their adjuster to tell them how they should be calculating the values for it. They have completed their inventory of their personal possessions, but have not received an offer/estimate from the insurance company on the dwelling. The Proof of Loss Statement requires them to list the replacement cost of damage, actual cash value of damage, total insurance under this policy, and amount claimed under this policy for each area of coverage--dwelling, personal property, etc. My questions are:

    1. Is it typical for the insurance company to provide estimates for replacement cost and actual cash value of damage for the dwelling, and to calculate the ACV for the personal property for the Proof of Loss Statement? Or do homeowners typically hire someone like an appraiser or contractor to come in and value the dwelling? How would my parents calculate the ACV since they don't know how depreciation is calculated?

    2. Are the amounts listed in the Proof of Loss Statement legally limiting? In their case, because the house is still sitting as if it burned yesterday, they haven't been able to evaluate the integrity of the foundation, so they're worried that the replacement cost could vary depending on that and other similar factors. They're worried that whatever they put on this statement is going to lock them into the dollar amount that they're not 100% confident about. Is it understood that these are preliminary figures and estimates, or can they write "to be determined" for some values?

Thank you kindly for any advice. I know the adjuster would be the obvious person to answer these questions and we're going to try again to get him to answer them, but if his previous patterns of response are any indicator, that might take a while. And it seems like everything in the state's insurance regulations that require timely action on the part of the insurance company hinge on getting the Proof of Loss Statement submitted to start the clock.

Possible Accident Scam and Questions about my premium.

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 07:23 AM PDT

I lent my car to a friend for 2 weeks in Dec 2019 and I added him to my insurance as he didn't have one back then. He hit another car while he was pulling out of a parking lot at 5 mph. He believes the car was purposely stopped at an awkward angle to bait people. Anyways they are claiming 200,000 $ in damages for a 2009 Sienna and health issues because of this collision. Is this likely a scam? My insurance agent said it's probably gonna affect my premium even though he has his own insurance now. Since it's a claim for 200k, how bad is my premium gonna look? I pay 55$ per month for a 2018 Jetta now. I am located in North Carolina and the incident happened in Florida

Buying house - claim on roof

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 12:25 PM PDT

I'm currently under contract on a house in PA. As part of the home inspection (shocking I was able to get that!), clear issues with the roof were noted. Home inspector said roof likely needed to be replaced. I was able to get a roofer out to look at it, he noted a lot of hail damage, likely from a hail storm from a couple weeks ago. He suggested a roof replacement and quoted a price much higher than I expected (though after asking around some it seems the quote isn't outrageously high given current cost of materials).

We're currently set to close on about a month and in the negotiation period of credits, etc. The roof is a big sticking point.

The seller has submitted a claim to her insurance based on the report of our roofer and her own roofer. I have no idea how long it takes a claim like that to process, etc. So lets say her insurance approves the claim to pay for a new roof. But the roof can't be replaced until after closing. What happens in that case?

    Prior authorization advice?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 05:49 PM PDT

I'm waiting on some essential medication to be approved through prior authorization by my insurance. My doctor has already submitted the prescription, but when I called today to see if it was ready, they said my insurance doesn't want to cover it and requires a prior authorization. She told me it would take about 2-5 business days.

My question is, what should I do? Should I call every day or so to check on it or is that inappropriate? Should I call in a week? Should I do nothing and wait for them to call me? Should I call my insurance? I really need this medication and I'm afraid my insurance is going to deny the prior authorization request. I'm 20 and this is my first time doing everything by myself so I don't know what to do. Does anyone have any advice or experience to share?

    Edit: I'm from Texas

Switching Auto Carriers - fix my car now?

I'm planning to switch auto carriers at my business. We have some damage to a company truck that will exceed our deductible by a few thousand. Since I'm leaving this carrier, should I put in a claim now to fix the truck while still with my current carrier?

What are the ramifications for a claim with my current carrier for when I've moved over to another carrier?

    ITAL Garment Testing

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 08:09 AM PDT

Rhode Island - USA - We had a fire in December, and during the mitigation (literally day 1 after the fire) a dry-cleaner showed up and took EVERYTHING we owned. Upon receiving some of these items back after servicing, we noticed that some items were shrunk and misshapen. We told our insurance company and scheduled the dry cleaner to pick up these items. Fast forward 4 months --- we received a letter that claims an ITAL report suggests that these items are not actually ruined. Do we have any chance of pushing back? These items are clearly ruined.

23 y/o male, looking to buy $350,000+ armored truck, how likely is it I can even get insured?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 11:25 AM PDT

    Hey all,

I am currently in the market for a Rezvani Tank Military Edition, and am curious how insurance would work for this type of vehicle.

This vehicle is made by a boutique automaker and is based off of the 2021 Jeep Wrangler. It is fully armored and has a variety of features. My local agent (Progressive) straight up said that they cannot insure this type of vehicle, and reccomended a specialty auto insurer like Hagerty.

Unfortunately, Hagerty will not insure "high performance" vehicles (this vehicle has the standard Jeep V6 removed and replaced with a 392 Hemi, ~500 horsepower) for anyone under 25, and most other speciality insurers that I've found are this way.

I have had high performance vehicles insured through Progressive before, such as my Huracan, RSQ8, and GT500 (none of which I own anymore, all sold).

I'm not asking for a cost estimation or anything similar, as that would be practically impossible with the information given, rather, do you think it's even possible to insure this type of vehicle at my age?

About me: I'm 23 y/o, male, live alone, own my house, self employed, good credit, have an enclosed garage, and the vehicle will only be used for pleasure (I am fully WFH from here on out, and live very close to shopping/etc, so I do not technically need a "commuter" car. I only plan to put maybe ~5,000 miles a year on the truck.

I currently live in Plano, Texas.

How does a ticket being a moving violation change my insurance? (Louisiana)

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 02:43 PM PDT

I'm very stupid and got a speeding ticket for 28mph over the speed limit. My employer will not keep people on if they have a single speeding ticket over 20mph. I spoke with the court over the phone, and they said that I can request the ticket be downgraded from a moving violation. For those of you that handle insurance for employers, how will this turn out? If I get it changed from a moving violation do you think I could still be insured? Or would they drop me?

I'm just trying to figure out how I can keep my job.

Edit: I was also cited for "careless driving" for 25+ over, but they said they could stop that from being a moving violation, too.

Edit 2: I found a traffic lawyer I'll be discussing options with. Seems too important to let me handle on my own.
