    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Technicals Tuesday - Aug 31, 2021

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 02:30 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on technical analysis (TA), but if TA is not your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against TA here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Technical analysis (TA) uses historical price movements, real time data, indicators based on math and/or statistics, and charts; all of which help measure the trajectory of a security. TA can also be used to interpret the actions of other market participants and predict their actions.

The main benefit to TA is that everything shows up in the price (commonly known as "priced in"): All news, investor sentiment, and changes to fundamentals are reflected in a security's price.

TA can be useful on any timeframe, both short and long term.

BABA is the most bought stock amongst the biggest investors in America in the the last quarter.

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 09:21 AM PDT

Dataroma is a website that tracks 72 so called 'superinvestors' to see what they've been up to. Every quarter it takes every 13F filing for each investor and compiles a list of the top 10 stocks that so called 'smart money' is currently buying. These investors are some of the biggest and most influential investors in the world today including: Warren Buffett, Charlie Munger, Bill Gates, Seth Klarman , Bill Ackman, Carl Icahn, Michael Burry, etc.

The number #1 ranked stock that big investors have bought this last quarter is Alibaba. It is ranked past Google, Facebook, Amazon, Netflix and so many other companies. Thought this was interesting so I wanted to share.

Stocks that you consider hidden gems

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 03:30 AM PDT

As per title, this topic is to discuss about stocks that are not mainstream yet but you'd see that would be having a great performance in the next 5 years.

Companies like Moderna (MRNA) or Sea limited (SE), that today have not been discovered yet.

What do you think will be the next big play?

For me, AFRM, been holding since IPO, sold a bounce after the initial spike but despite being in red for most of the time is gaining confidence.

    Dividend stocks to park in

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 06:08 AM PDT

So I've come a long way from buying options, to selling options (still do with a small portion of my portfolio), to now being busy with work and wanting to just park my money in solid long term dividend paying companies. Currently I have portions of INTC, TAK, VZ, MPW, K. I am considering Walgreens, STAG, and SONY. I am also considering O but it's a bit high right now. What are some recommendations?

Why is Zoom share price falling so much?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 09:06 AM PDT

I bought ZM shares last month and it's been falling. Today its self is 16.23% down. Is there anything happening any news? I am a new investor and investing from outside of the US.

Do you think I should hold? I saw on yahoo finance that it's going down despite a good earnings report.

    PsychoMarket Recap - Tuesday, August 31, 2021

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 01:36 PM PDT

The rally in equities somewhat cooled today, with all three major indexes trading modestly red today but are on track to close out a stellar month, with the S&P 500 (SPY) gaining more than 2.5% in August, its seven straight month of gains. So far, the SPY is up a staggering 20% year-to-date. Market participants continue to digest the Federal Reserve's annual Jackson Hole Symposium and a key speech by Chairman Jerome Powell on Friday. Looking ahead, market participants await a busy week for new economic data, with the August Jobs Report due out on Thursday.

BMO Capital Markets became the latest financial firm to raise its end of the year price target for the SPY. Brian Belski, the company's Chief Investment Strategist, wrote in a note to clients that he now expects the index to end the year at $480, up from his original estimate of $450. He cites the "blistering rate" of corporate earnings amid a strengthening economic backdrop.

Despite hawkish statements by other Federal Reserve members in the July meeting minutes, in his speech Powell remained highly accommodative, suggesting he was more inclined to wait to see further progress in the economy before tapering QE, especially in light of surging infections due to the Delta variant. Powell said, "At the FOMC's recent July meeting, I was of the view, as were most participants, that if the economy evolved broadly as anticipated, it could be appropriate to start reducing the pace of asset purchases this year. The intervening month has brought more progress in the form of a strong employment report for July, but also the further spread of the Delta variant. We will be carefully assessing incoming data and the evolving risks. Even after our asset purchases end, our elevated holdings of longer-term securities will continue."

Powell once again urged caution since the economic recovery in the market is still undergoing, saying effects from an ill-timed policy shift would "arrive after the need has passed" and "could be particularly harmful. Here is the full quote, "The main influence of monetary policy on inflation can come after a lag of a year or more. If a central bank tightens policy in response to factors that turn out to be temporary, the main policy effects are likely to arrive after the need has passed. The ill-timed policy move unnecessarily slows hiring and other economic activity and pushes inflation lower than desired. Today, with substantial slack remaining in the labor market and the pandemic continuing, such a mistake could be particularly harmful. We know that extended periods of unemployment can mean lasting harm to workers and to the productive capacity of the economy."

Here is the full transcript from the speech, I encourage everyone to read it fully. It's not very long and is extremely insightful to see exactly what the main monetary policy-maker thinks of the current state of the economy

    https://www.federalreserve.gov/newsevents/speech/powell20210827a.htm

James Liu, Founder and CEO of Clearnomics, said of Powell's speech, "We do think that tapering, in general, will be a non-event, most likely because first, the market has had time to react throughout this year. The Fed has done a great job telegraphing this. Whether it's September or November for the announcement of taper will really depend on the jobs report coming up and some more economic data. But regardless, the market seems to expect it at this point. This is very different from 2013 when the market had to adjust very abruptly to taper." In my humble opinion, I totally agree with this sentiment.

    Highlights

    • U.S. home prices surged by the most in 30 years at the beginning of this summer as tight inventory levels and elevated demand combined to drag on affordability. Yesterday, the Chinese Communist Party announced minors were forbidden to play video games for more than three hours a week (only on the weekends). Recently, state media has been rallying against video games, calling them "spiritual opium". Thoughts on VIAC

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 08:03 AM PDT

I cant think of a better value play right now, but the market seems to beg to differ. Not only is VIAC a great value considering how cheap it is (8 pe) but there is also great growth potential as well as a relatively likely scenario where they get bought out.

They have a streaming platform that caters to adults as well as children unlike HBO MAX which is heavily adult geared and Disney which is heavily children geared. Paramount plus has it all, including highly highly popular paw patrol franchise which is killing it right now.

Yield around a little below 2.5% as well.

Why is the market shitting on this. It's been perpetually held between 38-42

Upcoming stocks with potential to be added to major ETFs?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 11:34 AM PDT

I am an APPS holder and with the recent news of APPS being added to the mid size market cap 500 ETF it sky rocketed all the way from 45-48$ up to 60$ in a few trading hours. I ended up with around 20% profits before selling. Also caught CLOV at 6.88 before it hit 24$ for the same reason (added to a major ETF) Kinda kicking myself for not loading up on calls which I would of done if I foresaw today's news. My question to Reddit is what causes these stocks to be added to the indexes? Did they just meet requirements? Is there any way to track which stocks are close to meeting said requirements? I think I'm on to something lol

China stiffens regulatory penalty on e-commerce companies

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 04:45 AM PDT

China has added a stiff regulatory penalty to e-commerce regulations.

Now, an e-commerce company can lose its license to do business if it fails to enforce intellectual property rights violated by third party vendors on its platform. This regulation puts the responsibility for detection and removal of counterfeit goods and copyright-violating products squarely on e-commerce companies carrying products for third party vendors. While this is a substantial but manageable technical and business process burden, the new penalty of loss of license to do business also gives the state a powerful weapon to use against e-commerce companies like Alibaba.

Previously, failure to enforce intellectual property rights was subject to a fine.

    https://cbnc.com/chinas-market-regulator-proposes-amendments-to-e-commerce-law/

BEIJING (Reuters) -China's market regulator proposed amendments to the country's e-commerce law, saying that licences can be revoked if the platforms fail to take necessary measures against vendors who infringe intellectual property rights.

    Hidden Gems Discussion Attempt #2

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 09:46 AM PDT

Let's have a fun discussion about our hidden gem stocks but please let's not overflow the discussion with well known stocks/bags. If u have had a pulse for the past six months you already know about Corsair, wish, clover health, etc etc. Let's keep this discussion primarily to stocks that are rarely discussed please. For example I bought heavily into Pinterest on the last dip but it doesn't make the list because most of everyone knows about that stock. Let's think about stocks we believe could double in the next 2-3 years. Please include reasoning also. Three to Four letter ticker responses are not helpful. Here goes lol.

Squeeze - An MIT PhD patented a whole cell delivery technology and built this company around it. Unlimited applications and they can customize they therapy to your genome in under 24 hours. Institutions fell all over themselves to buy in at 20/share in March and it currently sits at 13.

Himax - Taiwanese optical sensing/processing semiconductor play. Growing fast but trailing p/e 9.4 and forward is 3.5 with p/s of 1.7. This for a company with qoq growth of 18.2% (that's not yoy).

Indie semiconductor - an asic semiconductor manufacturer solely focused on automotive industry with lots of backlog for tier 1 clients. Their main product is infotainment/multimedia asic but it's far from their only.

Feye - cyber security is hot yet feye gets mentioned the least. I just bought after last Er because I think it's a gem value wise. Selling off their products division is the right long term move but it spooked wall st so I've been buying at a discount. Led investigation of many high profile attacks including the IT firm kaseya this summer

    Morning Update for Tuesday, 08/31/21

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 05:49 AM PDT

Good morning everyone, happy Tuesday :)

This list is geared towards day trading. With the momentum watchlist especially, I am typically in and out very quickly, only occasionally longer than a couple minutes, usually faster scalps. Always have a plan when you enter a trade (for profit taking and for taking a loss), and use proper risk management for your account.

    Main Watchlist:

    Gapping UP:

    • BABA
    • CRSR
    • NTES
    • PDD
    • JD
    • APPS
    • AMC

    Gapping DOWN:

    • ZM
    • FIVN
    • HOOD
    • AFRM

    Market Outlook:

Stocks are looking at a mixed open after we had a strong day overall in the market yesterday. The S&P 500 has gained nearly 21% year-to-date, and this is a bit concerning to me. Some analysts think tapering is already priced in and we should see more strength to close out the rest of the year. I'm not convinced that the negative influential factors are priced in (not only tapering, but also future COVID fears, potential growth slowdown, and inflation looming in the background). Business as usual if we continue to see strength, but I'll be watching for potential weakness, and we could be in for some choppiness.

SPY is trading a bit over 451. I'll be watching 451 and 450 as potential support levels, but if we hold up above 451 we could see a further push to ATH. DIA is trading a bit under 354. If it sees weakness, I'll be watching 352 as a key support level. QQQ is trading a bit under 380 and is in a similar technical area compared to SPY. Gold and silver are trading slightly higher this morning, while crude oil is down a bit. B**coin is currently trading around 47,900. After some choppiness the past few days, I'll be watching closely. With the recent consolidation, we could be in for a break in either direction. Cr**to-related stocks are down a bit in premarket trading, and I'll be keeping a close eye on them with regards to B**coin's price action today. Airlines and cruise stocks are down a bit in premarket trading after seeing weakness in yesterday's session. The charts are not looking great, and the weakness could continue. Meme stocks continue to see increased attention, I'll be watching GME and AMC closely.

Remember to use proper risk management, by making sure you size appropriately for your account and have a plan for every trade you enter (both for taking profits and cutting losses). Happy trading everyone :)

Best site to see analyst price targets?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 10:35 AM PDT

Hey there, I like looking at analyst sentiment of various stocks - I typically go to TipRanks for an overall idea, but seeing a simple list of analyst recs with corresponding dates and targets is behind an expensive paywall.

This info is all public, so I'm wondering if people have a better site for this type of research?

U.S. Consumer Confidence Falls to Six-Month Low on Delta Variant

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 08:18 AM PDT

U.S. consumer confidence dropped in August to a six-month low, suggesting concerns over the delta variant and elevated prices are weighing on Americans' views of the economy now and in the coming months.

The Conference Board's index fell to 113.8 from a revised 125.1 reading in July, according to the group's report Tuesday. Economists in a Bloomberg survey had called for a decline to 123.

how are trades recorded, is there some type of 'trade id'?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 12:28 AM PDT

    I'm curious about something.
On trading platforms you can see an 'order book' showing how many shares are bought/sold. How is that done? Where does that data come from?

I would like to know the backend mechanics of how this is done. Is there some type of code/id being used?

example; Webull's order book, where do they get that data to show in real time like that?
