My wife, who is a teacher, is forced to have a covid positive student. Posted: 31 Aug 2021 08:34 AM PDT We live in Mississippi, she teaches 1st grade. A student came in today with a note from the doctor saying they were covid positive but asymptomatic. The school board has approved for the student to be in the classroom. Is there anything she can do short of walking out? Everyone but my 5 year old is vaccinated. Edit: it was the second test after quarantine. So the student is positive, but since she has been quarantined she is no longer infectious. Sorry for the misunderstanding and thank you all for the replies. [link] [comments] |
Broke classmates laptop screen, his father wants 2000 for it Posted: 31 Aug 2021 03:33 AM PDT Classmate had a bulge in the top of his screen. I asked if I could push it in which he said yes to. After pushing it in, part of the screen broke. He pushed it in again which caused the screen to be completely broken. Now his father wants 2000 for it. What should I do? [FL] Husband didn't file our taxes for 5 years, IRS is now asking me to pay Posted: 31 Aug 2021 05:40 AM PDT I am planning on divorcing my husband of 9 years (10 years in December) as soon as possible. Backstory: He has been financially and emotionally abusive throughout our marriage. I've been a stay at home mom for the last 8 years. During that time, he has been very controlling about our money (although, he refers to it as his money) to the point that my name isn't on any of our bank accounts. All I've been given is a single credit card which he has taken away from me (along with the keys to our only car) in the past during arguments . He has also kept me in the dark about all our finances. Earlier this year, I made the decision that I wanted out of this marriage and starting working again, I have saved up some money, but not enough for a divorce lawyer yet. Last week, I received a letter from the IRS stating I needed to pay a past due amount of $1,800 or they will consider levying our bank account. My husband said he spoke to his accountant (who, according to him, is also a lawyer?) and that I needed to quickly sign a "Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative" form. My husband informed me that more of these IRS letters will continue to trickle in since he didn't file our taxes for 5 years. My question: Do I sign the form? I plan to file for sole custody of our child when I file for divorce, can any of this help with my custody battle in the future? [link] [comments] |
Hospital says I owe them $1200... for a visit with a doctor I've never seen. Posted: 30 Aug 2021 06:02 PM PDT I'm really at a loss right now. Spent nearly 3 hours on the phone with the billing department at my local hospital. Got a bill in the mail saying I owe them $1180. Thing is, it's for a doctor I've never even heard of, let alone ever seen. The 'date of service' it was billed on, I was out hiking with my dog. On top of this, I have a $2500 deductible with my insurance that I met in March after having my appendix taken out. Edit: (so I'm guessing they've not even sent this thru my insurance.) I was basically stonewalled by the *lovely* person I was on the phone with. She didn't care to hear about any of the aforementioned details. Just that they "accept most major credit cards and checks" or. that she could set me up with a "no interest monthly payment plan." I've never had this happen to me, and have absolutely ZERO idea where to go from here. Amongst the fine print it said I have 90 days to pay before it's sent to collections. Any help whatsoever would be much appreciated. I'm willing to get a lawyer if need be, but not even sure if anyone would be willing to help for something that isn't malpractice. Edits: I'm in Maryland, USA I also have a very unique name, so it's not an accident in that regard. Having spoken to friends, neighbors, coworkers since, I'm starting to suspect *potential* insurance fraud. Others have told me they've been over billed/double billed before. [link] [comments] |
I’ve been indefinitely suspended, should I just quit? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 03:36 AM PDT I worked in aviation logistics and I made a mistake on my paperwork and caught, corrected and reported it as per protocol. Protocol afterwords is unpaid suspension lasting around 3 months maximum while an investigation is done by our partner company into the incident. Well, that happened about a year ago and my company, including HR, ghosted me. I spoke with HR when the process began because I had a suspicion it would happen as managers at our company's set up there have a tendency to indefinitely suspend instead of firing when they don't like someone because they have to file a request for termination from our headquarters out of state. Meaning they indefinitely suspend when they don't have a reason to fire someone. The reason I had a suspicion indefinite suspension was coming was because my manager had been making my life quite difficult, rejecting requests for reasonable accommodation, setting me on a night shift only schedule after I'd reported that I struggled on the shift, immediately rejecting an application for unpaid time off for religious purposes that I handed in 5 months before the date requested off etc. I found out that our partner company requested my return last August or September, on the day that I got my last response from HR stating that I'd be brought back as soon as they had word from our partner company. I have an email from the partner company confirming it. I haven't quit because I'm taking classes for a career change and I don't want a gap in my work history, so quitting was more non beneficial for me, also part of me was hoping they'd actually call me back in because I enjoyed my job. I haven't received any form of contact or notification that I was terminated. I don't know if I should just quit or if I should consider a lawsuit saying as I live in Texas, an employment at will state. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2021 11:44 AM PDT Today the gas company came out to detect a potential gas leak. There was no gas leak, but they mentioned my hot water heater is hooked up to the laundry in the shared space as well as the dryer is somehow hooked up to my gas. My bills have always been extremely high, but I assumed it was to poor insulation in an older building. When I contacted my landlord about it he said I agreed to it when I moved in ten years ago, which I never did and it was never in my lease. Another note is that my shared laundry is paid so I'm paying him money and taking on the utility bills which seems so ridiculous. I did the math of how much higher my gas bill is compared to other tenants in the same building and this is far more than small claims court. I know that I should contact a lawyer, and I am absolutely going to, but I want to see what I should do to prepare for this. I have seen this landlord act absolutely nasty to tenants when he gets called out on basic laws and I'm scare of any retaliation or harassment. [link] [comments] |
(AZ)My father cheated on my mom and sold out home without us knowing. Says we have 4 days to vacate. Posted: 30 Aug 2021 08:25 PM PDT Long story here but basically my dad recently cheated on my mom (they are still legally married) and is now selling our home and says we have 4 days to vacate. Living in the home is my mom and dad(50's) me (21), my boyfriend (21), my younger sister (13), and mine and my boyfriends 2 children (6) and (8mo's). My dad has been in and out of jail my whole life and my mom has held our entire lives together. She has always and consistently paid all the bills for the home. The home itself is in my grandmothers (dads mom) name and recently my dad has been granted power of attorney over my grandmother. This is where the sale is coming from. My dad has been coaxed by his new fling or whatever she is and some guy he works with to sell the home and basically upend us and kick us to the curb. Apparently there is already a buyer and we must be out before the end of the week. My family has lived here for the last 15 years and with such short of a notice I don't know what to do about my family in this time. Is there anything we can do, do we legally need to vacate? Do I have any options in order to secure proper standards for my children? Sorry if this doesn't flow but I'm extremely distraught right now. Any help would be appreciated. EDIT: Thanks to everyone's help here, because of some of you, we learned about elder abuse and other legalities when it comes to power of attorney. My mom has done some digging and found that my grandma (who has Alzheimer's) did not grant him POA and he is doing all of this illegally and trying to scare us to make us leave. My mom is contacting a lawyer now. [link] [comments] |
Is it illegal to run plates for non-police officers? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 11:34 AM PDT Question for all of you: I'm an Uber driver and this crazy lady left her wallet in my car the other day. She contacted me and I ended up leaving it at my local police department and let Uber know the address. Fast forward a couple days and she shows up at my door with her boyfriend demanding I give it to her and I ended up calling the police because people are batshit crazy. During her rant at me she said her friend ran my plates and that's how she got my address. Is this illegal in California? Anything I can do to hold her accountable? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Can my condo association/hoa compel me to DNA test my dog? Posted: 30 Aug 2021 06:22 PM PDT I recently moved in with my girlfriend and her home is part of an association. The neighbors are unhappy about me moving in and are trying to get us to move by any means possible. There was recently an association meeting where one of the members suggested a ban on aggressive dogs, mainly pit bulls. They have never had a law like this until I move in. My dog was specifically brought up and when informed that he was not a pit bull he said "there's no way he isn't part pit bull". I have the paperwork documenting his breed but he says he won't believe it until I get a DNA test. Can they force me to get one to keep my dog with me or is his adoption paperwork sufficient? Unsure on whether these after move-out charges are allowed.(PA) Posted: 31 Aug 2021 04:07 AM PDT So I moved out of an apartment complex a bit over a month ago, but I just received a bill for painting the townhouse and replacing a desk. I did not pay a deposit, but instead paid a $150 non refundable "redecoration fee". I also received these charges over 30 days after my lease ended, but they were sent 29 days after the lease ended. Can I be expected to pay for these charges? [link] [comments] |
Neighbor threatening me over parking in the street. Posted: 31 Aug 2021 12:41 PM PDT I live in a small Cul de sac, like the circular dead end type. I run a small business out of my home, that requires me to have access to my garage/gate to the back yard. When possible, I of course park in my drive way, but occasionally I'll have my car parked in the street, in front of my property. Our neighbor however, decided that this is absolutely not okay for some reason. If my car is parked in the street, it's not long before she comes over and starts literally screaming at me, and my son who lives here with me about the car parked in the street. I've heard everything from "this is a handicap Cul de sac, I need the entire street to back my van into my driveway" to, "it's illegal for you to park in the road like that". Usually when she comes over, I let her throw her fit, and then politely tell her to pound sand. It's a public roadway, and while I understand the street is not my property, I am in no way blocking access to hers, or her ability to turn around, etc. She's now started threatening to call the police, have my car towed, etc. I'm not necessarily worried, or trying to get her to stop. I just want to make sure that I'm understanding how parking in the street actually works. Amy other advice is welcome, thanks Idaho [link] [comments] |
[OH] US Customs Intercepted Package Posted: 31 Aug 2021 09:00 AM PDT Bought a bulk pack of small cheap plastic grinders from China and it never arrived. Called around to follow up and got this letter - https://imgur.com/a/7vKy19W They are non descript cheap plastic grinders. I do not understand:
What is the simplest response I can draft to tell them to release my property? This feels like extortion, if I understand right option #2 is to pay and receive the property? edit: I just remembered these bulk orders ship with store displays. I have no idea what kind of graphics are on those / maybe this is the point of contention [link] [comments] |
(MA) Neighbor gave away my bike? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 06:40 AM PDT I am not very hopeful that I can find a solution for this, but here goes. I am living in Boston, MA, and we are currently in the lease expiring cycle at the end of the month. My downstairs neighbor left a desk out for someone to come grab in the foyer, and the person "mistakenly" took my fairly expensive road bike as well (an easy mistake to make right, desks and bikes look pretty similar). They said the person was going to bring it back tomorrow, that of course did not happen. Do I have any recourse whatsoever here? [link] [comments] |
[TX] Can I sue someone for using my art as an album cover in which I received no credit for? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 12:12 PM PDT My art was used as an album cover and I did not want it to be used. Is there anything I can do about this? I'm genuinely just curious, I cannot see myself actually suing the artist or anything, I just want to know. First time posting here, sorry if the flair isn't completely accurate, I'm not sure what fits. [link] [comments] |
How should I (CA) proceed on evicting my ex Posted: 31 Aug 2021 04:48 AM PDT The folks over on r/AmItheasshole redirected me here. I live in California. My (24F) ex (22M) has been living in my family's home for about a year and a half, we have broken up at least 6 months ago. He told me if I kick him out he will be homeless, which is why he has been staying. When he first moved in we had some form of agreement typed on his computer that he would provide house improvement services for me in exchange for living in the place. Over the year he has not done much, if at all (though he would remind me of the very trivial stuffs he has done for this house, or the stuffs his mom did (cool lady), if I bring this fact up). He pays half utilities via zelling me every month. He has also yelled and belittled me over the course of his stay. Something that is qualified as emotional abuse according to my therapist. During our relationship he has pressured me to receive anal from him, despite me begging him not to and despite having learned that I had been anally raped before. The last time I was pressured was probably about 8 months ago. Shortly before I tried to break up with him. After the break up, he still groped me very frequently and, though rarely, initiated sex with me. At first he argued that having sex does not mean we were in a relationship and so I let him. However, there were times where he either ignored, or threw hissy fits when I say no to his advances. Recently when I put my foot down and told him to stop altogether, he defended his actions by saying that there are times I were being horny and welcoming, if not begging, him to fuck or touch me; that I were giving him mixed signal. I tried to tell him that the few times I gave consent does not mean he could touch me when I did not. He finally gave in to my demand, but not without giving me a very hard time. The reason he is still in my place is, again, because he is very desperate for a place to live, and according to him I could not kick him out anyway because COVID-19 rental restriction on the owner. Recently I learn that the restriction may not apply anymore. I have tried to contact my ex's family to get things resolved with as little hardship against him as possible, with little success as of today. I have just last night sent his father a long text detailing my current issues and my unwillingness to keep housing him. I hope the text can clarify whatever misconceptions he has had before, and also leave behind a paper trail. Some more information: my ex has a few months back purchased a gun and it is now in my house. I'm initially not surprised since he is hailed from one of those military looking family whose members have never served. Now however, I'm scared. Especially after how many redditors and my friends have told me he sounds dangerous. He is a normally safe and sane, law abiding citizen. I like to think he knows better than to do anything stupid to himself or me should I try to evict him and he feels stuck. Still, I want to be safe. Then again, I don't have any proof that he could harm me or has intend to harm me, just my thoughts. Any advice on how I should deal with him in the safest way possible is appreciated. I think maybe a restraining order, but I don't know if I'm qualified. [link] [comments] |
Am I responsible for this fine? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 12:56 PM PDT Am I responsible for this fine? I am employed by a management company who had me assigned to a certain hotel. The owner of the hotel apparently didn't keep up with his permits and let the health permit expire. The city came in and issued a citation, which they put in my name since I was the only employee working. About a week later I was assigned to a new property and no longer work at this hotel, but I received this letter in the mail yesterday. I contacted the clerk and explained everything, but she said to simply tell the business owner to pay the fine. If he doesn't, there will be a warrant for arrest in MY name. This guy doing nothing is a distinct possibility (we even stopped working with him because he was shady). Is there anything I can do? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Brother kicked out, needs to transfer to attend senior year Posted: 31 Aug 2021 12:28 PM PDT School here (WI) hasn't started yet, and he was kicked out a month ago at 17. He's now living with me and turned 18 yesterday, school starts on Tuesday. We contacted the school and filled out forms to enroll him and get his transcripts from his old school (in WY) sent here. The secretary emailed him today and asked if we could get my mother to sign guardianship papers for the school so I can have access to his school info, sign releases, and call him out for sick days and whatnot. I replied that our parents were refusing contact and are not willing to offer any sort of support, but that I was fine with not being anything but his emergency contact as he's 18 and can have the freedom to handle his own school issues. She responded that she wasn't sure if he could be enrolled then without parental permission, but would check with the principal and superintendent. I assumed (foolishly, I suppose) that he would just be able to enroll in his senior year as a legal adult living in the school district. What are our legal options here? He has his birth certificate, driver's license, social security number, and proof that he lives in the district but would really like to attend a public school for his senior year instead of opting for a GED or online courses if at all possible. [WI] Assisted Care Facility Employee Stealing and Replacing Medication Posted: 31 Aug 2021 12:22 PM PDT TL;DR: Elderly relative in nursing home, employee stealing and changing out her medication. Relative ended up in ER but is fine. Police left it up to us to press charges. Lawyer needed, or just tell administration and press charges? Ongoing situation so I'll try to be brief. An elderly relative of mine is in an assisted care facility. Over the last few months, our family has suspected that somebody was stealing from our relative. Started out with narcotic pain killers going missing, escalated to money going missing from the individual's bag. Relative is not known to have a perfect memory, so before making accusations we got permission from the administration to place cameras in our relative's room. Fast forward to this weekend - my relative ended up in the ER from violently throwing up. This will be relevant later. After that ER visit, we took our relative out to lunch the next day. After, we checked the cameras. An employee from the facility was seen going into her room and we could hear the drawer with her medication being opened. When we checked the medication, the narcotics were gone and were replaced with 500mg Tylenol. My relative is already prescribed Tylenol, so the extra dosage was way too much. We didn't have a clear video of the employee switching pills out, so we moved the camera placement and took her out to lunch the next day. Same thing - employee goes into room, and can be seen removing medication and switching it out. We also took photos of the pills before leaving and after coming back. 100% different. At some point the police were made aware, however, they won't do anything unless my relative wants to press charges. The family is trying to decide how best to go about handling this situation. I'm convinced that we need a lawyer (would elder law be the right area of practice?), and preferably would talk to a lawyer before telling the administration. My hesitation is that if we wait to talk to a lawyer, something worse could happen to another resident. We're not sue-happy people, but want to make damn sure this doesn't happen again, or to anybody else. Question: Do we need a lawyer, or is pressing charges and bringing the evidence to the administration enough? [link] [comments] |
[PA] No consistent hot water for over 2 months Posted: 31 Aug 2021 01:18 PM PDT I moved into a new apartment at the end of June, and from day 1, I have had issues with my hot water. It will be hot, then turn to warm, then cold; and I would have to contact maintenance to reset it to get hot water again. I have submitted various maintenance requests online (the website keeps track of my requests) and apparently they came to replace the thermostat last week, but it just went cold again over the weekend. I also talked to someone about it when I first moved in and all they said is that they would investigate it. I called the office today and they said they would send someone over, but all they did was reset the water heater (or as they wrote on the note they left, "reboilt water."). I know it will get cold again by this weekend, and it doesn't seem as if they want to replace my water heater or fix the issue aside from constantly resetting it. Do I have any legal recourse here? Area is Mechanicsburg-Harrisburg area in PA. I can provide more information if necessary. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Can employer require me to repay another employee’s short register out of pocket? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 09:06 AM PDT I work at a car wash. There are two main positions: one in the booth taking payments, 1-3 preps washing cars. Tipping is an option. Tips go solely to preps (job is harder) and booth person makes commission on membership sales. I normally work prep but was in the booth half of yesterday's operating hours. Booth register is more than $35 short this morning. Could have been me (almost certain it wasn't) or could've been the person who came in after me (history of poor performance). Doesn't really matter. Main point is management is trying to say that $35 must be reimbursed to the store out of the tip jar. Meaning 4+ people on staff yesterday who had nothing to do with the short register are being forced to pay the store to cover it. I'm one of the tipped people. I'm being forced to pay out of pocket, probably about $7-$12, to cover this. Kansas. ?????? [link] [comments] |
