So my wife and I accidentally discovered a Natural Mosquito repellant, what now?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 10:40 AM PDT

Long story short, my wifes cousin graduated from college, we had a small family get together and we were all outside

keep in mind that my wife is prone to getting bit by mosquitos A LOT, like its a problem if she wears shorts outside shell more than likely get bit

anyways that day she wore a dress and by the end of the night she had NO bites from mosquitos at all

we were really kind of in awe tbh and didnt really think about it too much until her aunt came over and said that we got the "good" backyard spot where mosquitoes dont really bite people

immediately a lightbulb went off in my head and i asked her why or if she had any idea as to why

she said "i really have no idea but im guessing its the plants in the back of you that they dont like"

by the end of the night we took like 5 plants home that were sitting in front of and boiled each one individually and then started mixing them to see what we could find

and out of those 5 plants a mixture of 3 was the working golden ticket.

we figured out that the combination of these three plants basically keeps mosquitoes away and ONLY mosquitoes.

Weve been using this "boiled plant spray" for like a week now and we have not been bittin unless its a spot where we dont spray (which we usually leave unsprayed for testing)

but we know it works, what now?

where can we sell this? do we have to get approval to sell this?

it literally ONLY contains 4 ingredients, 3 plants and water, thats it, nothing else

First time hitting 100 active users!

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 11:39 AM PDT

I've been working on a software product for the last 2 years. Finally did some outreach to start sharing with relevant people and we had over 100 users in our first real attempt at outreach! That's only actual users, not accounting for the other 700 people who visited the site, but didn't actually use it immediately.

It's so exciting to see people respond well to an idea I've been working on for so long. Now to keep pushing forward! Just wanted to share with people who may understand how exciting this is

Is the goal just to make money?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 08:25 AM PDT

    TL;DR

Will a company be successful if there goal is simply to make money

I keep seeing posts along the lines of "what's a good startup idea that will make me a lot of money".

It could just be me, but I always felt that if money eas the goal, it's very hard to be successful.

A common theme in startups is "to change the world" or "to make the world a better place" and I think those companies will be able to push through the hard times much more than a company that builds a product they think will be most lucrative.

    Am I way off here?

Are you satisfied with your SEO service provider?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 01:08 AM PDT

I'm a founder of an SEO agency and I'm curious about what entrepreneurs are looking for when working with an SEO agency.

Are you satisfied with your current SEO provider?

    If NO: why?

    What could make it better?

Example: communication, results, transparency of the work, not knowing what they're working on, reports, etc.

    If YES: why?

What are they doing that makes you happy? What would make you even happier?

If you have an in-house SEO specialist or team:

are you satisfied with how they work? Are you sure that it's cheaper/better than an outsourced agency? Why did you hire an in-house specialist vs. an agency?

I want to leave my 9-5 to start cleaning houses. How much do I need to save/prep for this?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 08:01 AM PDT

Hey guys, I asked r/personalfinance and was sent here.

I'm currently the administrative assistant to a financial advisor. I left healthcare and only regret it because I miss my coworkers. There's no way to move up there, but honestly it's the same here, too.

There's money to be made cleaning where I live. It'll be less predictable, but I can't just sit behind this desk with no human interaction, no getting up from the computer, and only jazz music for 40 hours a week.

There is demand in my area for cleaning. But I don't have daytime availability with this job. I don't have much experience, so it's not like I can call up an old client base or anything. I've tried to schedule some things on nights and weekends, but people don't really want the cleaner in their home while they're also there, so I'm not making any progress.

How should I prepare to quit the 9-5 and start building up a cleaning client base? How much money should I save? Is there any other financial advice for this that I need to be considering? Thanks!

Edit: 1. I'm trying to start out on care.com, do I still need to do BDA and licensing things for this?

    1. My main ask is how much to prep for personal expenses in y'all's experiences. 3 months? 6? I just don't know when to make the jump.

Anyone else sometimes feel like they get hate for no reason as a business owner?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 09:33 AM PDT

Sometimes it just feels like its uncalled for. People think I am successful even though I am struggling with many things at once with my start up which has yet to take off. I noticed, usually it's the people who haven't run a company before subconsciously think its ok to be more harsh (I guess it should be obvious but sometimes knowing it and experiencing it are two different things)? I'm not talking about constructive criticism but straight up hate. I think I am a strong person but this stuff slowly is getting to me.

    Bootstrapping a cosmetic/skincare product?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 09:00 AM PDT

Anyone have experience in the cosmetics/skincare industry?

I'm looking to introduce a lotion/hand cream type product and would love some resources on breaking into the industry, regulations, negotiating with manufacturers, validating demand, etc.

How big of barriers/investment am I looking at to validate demand for simple hand cream?

    Building nocode software for FREE

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 07:06 AM PDT

I've always had a lot of ideas. And the feeling that my mission on earth is to create products/tools that will solve humans problems. I just love creating stuff and solving problems. Today my dream doesn't seem so unattainable. With bubble app I can create anything I desire. My and my buddy are starting our own agency that will focus on serving clients that are trying to solve social issues. However creating stuff for money is little disturbing to me. I know I'll have to deal with lots of crappy 'customers' or situations. Been there done that as a Project Manager.

So I was thinking instead of an agency maybe we should launch a Patreon profile. We'll start creating cool stuff and maybe people will want to support us.However I don't know why would anyone support us. Also I don't want to create stuff and burry them in the dust bin of the internet. I want people to take those solutions & fly with them. In the ideal world of mine we create something from 0-1. And then someone takes it from 1 to 10, 100, 1000 +...

I just wanted to share this here. Maybe you guys can help us figure out the right path.

Tired of seeing all this amazing advice from people and not knowing what they’re business is!!! Haha

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 02:13 PM PDT

THEIR* damnit. So many people give amazing advice I wish there was a little label under their advice saying what their business is. I'm sure a lot of others feel the same because hearing the advice and which industry/business they are in helps us realize the advice even better. So those of you who have found success, what's your business? What was your "big idea" that finally worked for you?

A business book with valuable knowledge that also reads well?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 01:25 PM PDT

    Hi,

I am looking for recommendations of business books such as my favourites:

Positioning: Battle for your mind, - speaks about very basic and timeless ideas of marketing and psychology and uses stories to tell them.

On Advertising, - Mr. Ogilvy drops some seriously practical advertising wisdom in a super engaging style

The choice factory, - Very structured, to the point, but never boring

Shoe Dog - Boy, what a lifestory. The Nike founder showes the human side of building a company

Zero to one - Story of Paypal and what its founder learned onbthe way, no generic advise, very unforgiving look at start ups

These gave me very valuable knowledge and were pleasure to read!

Would be happy to hear your recommendations.

    Thank you! :)

CRM - I have searched, but still have questions!

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 07:19 AM PDT

Hi folks! I am a solo entrepreneur, and I run my own performing business. I perform outdoor shows at fairs and festivals.

The way I get booked is by having a huge list of potential clients (say State/County fairs in the USA) and these lists can get almost to a thousand. I prepare emails, make detailed notes of whether they respond/what we talked about, and follow up either by email or phone calls.

When I told a friend I'm doing this manually, using just gmail and excel he was horrified and recommended a "CRM". I've looked into it and have some ideas of what I should use but am hoping I can get some help to make sure I pick the right one.

    • I'm the only employee, maybe in the future I may work with a V/A but can't see it getting too big of a team
    • I cold-email hundreds of potential clients, not hearing back too often, and follow up by email or phone. Would be cool if I could automate this!
    • I like the mail track idea so I could see if they have read it or are interested
    • Auto generating contracts/invoices would be a cool feature
    • I dislike the "Mighty Mike - sent via "aweber.c16.blahblah.com " vibe, because I think one of the reasons my cold emails get through is because they are just from a normal guy, being personalized and typing directly to the client. When I get one of those "promo emails" with pictures and etc, I get turned off.

I have two in mind, I don't want to influence your recommendations though! Any CRMs seem perfect for me in my business? What other features should I be looking for? Any advice from you folks can definitely help me I'm sure!

    Thanks in advance,

    Mike

Launched the Beta Phase of my Cookieless Analytics SaaS

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 08:52 AM PDT

So a few weeks back I came here with a question regarding cookieless analytics and whether there is a place in the market for it. The thread was not as active but what surprised me was the number of messages I got, so I went ahead and set it up.

But before launching everything to the broader masses I want to test everything out , see the responses and hear suggestions on how to improve the product. ( A few users have already requested bounce rate to be added as a metric to the dashboard )

So that is where I need your help! Registering on the websites lets you test it out with a 1000 page views limit , but as I know that the amount is probably too little for most of you, feel free to PM me or start a Live Chat on the website with the email you registered with and I might know a guy who can help you out and increase that to a 100 000.

To registered just go to https://gocookieless.net - Logo is just a placeholder , had to state it as most people do not like it

As for further plans, my aim is to finish the testing phase by the end of August and then have the formal launch. So the next post should hopefully be in around a month where I will go thru the tactics I used and the results of launching on Product Hunt and Appsumo.

No success in a long time and seems to be blocking my view of future success. Feel like i'm sprinting in place.

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 12:22 PM PDT

I started on TikTok about a year and a half ago and gained about 100k in a year, but these past 6 months i've just been losing followers everyday despite still getting pretty good amounts of views on videos. Which is frustrating considering I'm putting in the work everyday still with no real gains.

I've also noticed that this has kinda tainted my view, whenever i think about another endeavor. I have a problem seeing future success in that company/account bc of the journey if this account. Any ideas how to get over this mindset block?

What methodology to use in order to determine the best area of business to focus on?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 04:41 AM PDT

I really want to start a business, I have money to invest and certain experience in IT & limited experience in entrepreneurship and freelancing efforts, however, I am stuck in analysis-paralysis mode.

I am good on doing research on various issues, modelling threats, statistical analysis, figuring out different questions, finding freelancers to hire and now I see that there are so many things I could potentially do.

Problem is I can't calculate the best risk-reward venture and none of the ideas I have I really have high passion for (I lack passion in any area tbh).

What methodology can I use to approach creating a startup in logical, structured way with best risk-reward and potential EV ratio?

Are there any guides / youtube videos on this?

People talk a lot about having "passion", but what if you are sort of dead internally and just go through motions and have 0 amount of passion in anything you do?

How many of you contemplated giving up your business dream to pursue a regular 9-5? What happened? What was the thought process?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 11:54 AM PDT

    Hi guys

So I have this itch to start my own fashion/apparel business for a niche market, however I'm contemplating whether or not I should give up and pursue a regular 9-5…

Sounds ridiculous I know. But here's some background on me:

I am currently a 28 year old who still lives at home and is currently unemployed. Thankfully my parents are well-off and don't mind me staying home at all till I figure my own shit out. I just can't help comparing myself with other people around me and seeing how they are doing well in their 9-5 makes me feel like I should do the same. I guess I can blame my age because of that. I sometimes think im too late in pursuing this business venture with the risk of failing potentially there and spend the next few years in a business that might fail.

Like I sometimes think is it even worth it then? To spend the next what 3-5 years marketing and selling these products that might fail? I get scared thinking of this. I'm afraid of wasting my time and energy when I could, like I said, grab a 9-5 right now and be somewhat secured. Tbh I think this is a safer route however I feel weak minded and I know successful entrepreneurs would rather take the risk and see it through.

Idk.. I am extremely thankful for my parents to give me this time to pursue my dream. But at the same time imafraid I'd fail and still live at home when I'm like age 33 applying to 9-5 like how I'm doing right now.

What do yall think? I would love to hear your feedbacks as well as harsh criticisms to the reality I am currently in. Anyone experience the same mindset?

What drives me to somewhat pursue this dream still is Jeff Bezos. I know we have our own opinions on me but he didn't exactly start at an early stage. He founded Amazon at the age 30 and look at him now!

    Need Advice on Cross Selling
