Had to cut the salaries of two of my employees today and I feel so demoralized. small business

Had to cut the salaries of two of my employees today and I feel so demoralized.

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 08:40 PM PDT

It's my fault. I'm the CFO of a start-up. I joined in January and, at the time, I thought we could put a few of the employees on salary. Well, very long story short, due to a lot of issues out of our control, we are now having cash flow issues and I had to have the hard conversation with them today. Though I didn't do it in public, me and my boss were both shaken up and devastated that we had to give these guys a pay cut.

Does it get better? We hope we can turn things around for Q4 but I'm just so defeated rn. One of our co-owners said he could float us the money to get through the month but what kind of fuckin business is that? We can't keep relying on that shit.

WTF is going on with the workforce? Does no one want to work any more?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 08:37 AM PDT

UPDATE FROM OP: Wow! Was not expecting this to blow up like this. Seems I hit a nerve. So much good feedback and a lot of posts suggesting I'm somehow lying or providing a poor working environment. Here's a little more about the busiess:

    • When I hire, I make it clear what hours I'm looking for. I have a good grasp of our busy time so schedule is clear and I work with employees when they need time off.

    • Many have suggested it must be my leadership/mgmt style which I have considered myself. I've worked in high-pressure leadership roles and have a ton of training in this area, so I've tried to identify issues. My style is generally "servant-leadership". Basically, how can I help my team be more successful and support them? When it's busy, I jump in and help - even washing dishes and mopping if I have to. I jump on the line, run food for the servers, etc. If I won't do the job, I can't expect others to do it, right?

-I don't have a problem telling people how I want things done. I have task lists written for each role so they know what needs to be done on open and close. If an employee has an idea on how to do something better, I'm usually up for trying it. They do the job so if it works, I'm open to change. If something is not being done correctly, I work constructively to make sure it gets done right in the future- usually simple stuff like only put dirty dishes on this rack, clean go over there. Or, make sure the ingredients on the flatbread spread out to the edges. Or, when pouring wine, be careful of over‐pours and refer them to the diagram. Seriously - these are about the most serious things get. None of these jobs are complex. And I have never corrected in anger.

    • I do have one long-term employee and have asked her if there's something I'm missing. She says she doesn't understand it and says she's very happy with the pay and hours. She likes that I will work with employees when they need time off and has told me I'm easy to work for.

-Some of your posts have suggested creepy managers and ive worked places like that when I was younger. I'm a middle-aged woman who is happily married and have no intention of being creepy. I watch for anything inappropriate between employees and when I've hired women - especially younger ones - I've told them explicitly that if a customer or employee was ever inappropriate or creepy to them, that they need to come to me as I have a zero tolerance for it.

ORIGINAL POST: I am so tired of no shows and call-ins at our winery/restaurant. We pay well, no one makes less than $15/hr and with tips they are averaging $20+/hr in Texas. Even the dishwasher! But from chef to server, I keep getting people who come and interview, take the job, and maybe last 2 shifts before they ghost. Some don't even bother to show up for the first shift. I think I'm asking the right questions when I interview‐ and they seem eager to work, but no go!

Is everyone else dealing with this as well? What can I do to weed these people out or has the whole workforce attitude changed so much in the last year or two that no one can even be bothered to call and say they quit? It's so bad that employees started a betting pool on new hires whether they will show up and how long they will last.

We are a small business, so when someone is a no show, it just makes a ton of work for the owners and the few employees who do show up. I'm at my breaking point! What are others experiencing and do you have any suggestions to prevent this?

Chase PPP round 1 forgiveness received!

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 08:50 PM PDT

I received a loan greater than $150,000 and did everything by the book to the T. I had planned my forgiveness docs back in August 2020 and patiently waited until Chase was allowing forgiveness applications.

I got my forgiveness request submitted in January 2021. Then nothing.

I bugged my local and regional business relationship manager for updates and they couldn't tell me much anything.

Then, in May, I was told that SBA said they needed more information. I blame Chase for botching the original forgiveness process of getting all of the documentation properly.

Within 2 days I had resubmitted everything, and learned I could use the 3580EZ app instead of the full blown version.

I resubmitted with even better documentation, and then waited.

I bugged my Chase contacts again in June and July. They finally got back to me saying that SBA was waiting for more information. I had never been told they needed anything, so my business banker told me they needed certified documentation of reduction in receipts. This was never requested, nor is it part of the SBA forgiveness process, but whatever, I had it available since I had already applied for the PPP round 2 loan. I asked "how do I submit this to PPA?" Crickets for 2 weeks.

I called a special Chase PPP Forgiveness number and spoke with a nice gentleman named Alfred. Somehow, he "escalated" my forgiveness request. I thought it was just the standard communication to get me off of his case, but, he followed up via email 2 days later saying SBA is reviewing it again.

Then, magically, I got this email this morning saying:

"PPP Loan Forgiveness: The SBA authorized your request.

The Small Business Administration (SBA) has authorized full Forgiveness of your Paycheck Protection Program Loan, as follows:

PPP loan amount: $ LOAN AMOUNT

    Forgiveness requested: $ LOAN AMOUNT

    Forgiveness authorized: $ LOAN AMOUNT

You won't need to make any payments on your PPP loan. We'll apply the Forgiveness amount the SBA authorized, plus all accrued interest, to your loan account.

It can take up 5 business days for us to apply the payment to your account, though actual times may vary. Within two billing cycles, you will receive a final statement with a zero balance.

As a reminder, this is a U.S. SBA program that Chase facilitates as an SBA lender. The requirements under this program are established by the SBA. All requests for loan forgiveness are subject to SBA eligibility.

Just posting as I know other people are in the same boat—completely in the dark about Chase. Hopefully this helps!

    New Business Venture!

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 12:41 AM PDT

Hello everyone is like to say thank you in advance for any comments and advice. I have just set up my own scaffolding LTD company after being in the trade 7 years.

I am still full time employed Monday to Friday and plan to work on nights and weekends for clients. I can easily live on my wage from my full time employment so do not need to take a wage from the company until I leave my job. My question is.. is this ok to do so? Am I missing anything here? Do I have to set up my national insurance etc even though I am not taking a wage?

I feel like I overthink these situations but want to get it right from the get go!

Again thank you for any comments if anyone can expand further with advice please do!

Do you pay commission/bonus if employees sell/do more than expected?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 12:40 AM PDT

A lot of stores have different opinions on this. Most often I see service based Stores like Hair Salon or Stylists use commissions and only very few retail stores use them.

Disclosure I work on commission calculation service, but I won't name it here.

“Suspicious activity” alert and Yelp shut down our business account.

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 08:08 PM PDT

This was how we generated all our leads and made all our money. We have ZERO fake reviews, they're all genuine- which you can see by looking at the pictures and the obvious heavy reviewers. They've now shut our Yelp down for A YEAR & they throw up a banner on our page that reads

"SUSPICIOUS REVIEW ACTIVITY We have noticed suspicious review activity for this business. This can take many forms, including which is a number of positive reviews originate from the same IP address or when we've identified reviews resulting from a possible deceptive review ring. Our automated recommendation software has taken this suspicious activity into account in choosing which reviews to display, but we wanted to call this to your attention because someone may be trying to artificially inflate the rating for this business"

That banner means all of the people who go to our Yelp now consider us fraudulent and we've lost that business forever. We're a moving company in NYC- people see our trucks, we're now branded forever with this- Should we sue for defamation? Yelp refused to give us an evidence that this was accurate, they refused to do anything they said it was their software, they didn't have any other information.

What small thing did you buy that was a game-changer when you got your first office/store?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 02:07 AM PDT

    Hi small business owners!

What is that one thing you bought that you can't live without now? Maybe it's value wasn't seen at first but now is integral to your success at the office/store.

My partner co-owns a small business in fashion retail and they've grown their online business to the point where they have a necessity to move out of the apartment and into a new office. For context, they've just received the keys to a new place and it also has a small bit of retail space in case locals want to buy their products in person.

I would love to get a gift for her and her business partner that would be useful in their new setting. It doesn't need to be glamorous but it has to be useful!

Startup looking for help from small business owners!

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 01:28 AM PDT

    Hey, small business owners,

    Problem
I've noticed from talking to a few of you the business sales process is pretty outdated. The process seems to cost a lot of money, takes a long time and often has an emotional toll on the business owner.
    Who we are
We are a group of 3, 20 something-year-olds wanting to improve the process by creating a new sales platform. This platform will be focused on providing the business owner with an enjoyable experience where they are informed and looked after at every step of the process.

    Ask
We're currently building our MVP and would really appreciate it if you could complete our 3 question survey. Also, if you've undergone the sales process we'd love to hear from you whether it was a positive or negative experience. Finally, if this is something you'd be interested in we'd appreciate it if you could sign up for our waitlist.

    TL:DR
Small business sales don't have an owner at heart, a new platform built with the owner in mind.

Baby swaddle blanket for original design printing

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 06:28 PM PDT

Hey all, I'm having trouble finding a good place to find swaddle blankets for printing original designs. I'm looking for muslin cotton baby swaddle blankets (typically 30-48" squares) to print on.

I have used blank shirts from apparel warehouses like S&S and Sanmar, but been having trouble finding an analogous solution for the baby blanket space. Wondering if anyone has any leads to point me to?

    Thanks in advance!

Why don't more owners speak on camera?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 04:25 PM PDT

Most small business owners don't speak on camera regarding their businesses. It'd be interesting to me to see more owners not only talking about their products and services, but also showing conversations with their employees and even customers. I follow only one small business owner whom talks about his products on social media, which his followers absolutely adore. Why don't more owners speak on camera?

Sales tax question - tangible products

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 11:54 AM PDT

We have a vendor who occasionally does some work for us that we can't do in house. Services only - capturing of video tape to files on a computer. We're in Massachusetts.

They are telling us that in the past they ate the sales tax on these services to meet the number in our purchase orders, but they're no longer doing that. they tell me that if they upload the captured files to a server, there will be no sales tax, but if they copy the files to a hard drive we provide (not one they sell us), they will charge sales tax because it's a "tangible product." (huh?)

...Even though they're the same files, the only difference here is the delivery medium.

We're both in the same state, by the way.

This seems like a really weird interpretation of "tangible product" since this is a service either way and the only thing we're paying for is that service, not the media the files they create are delivered on.

I'm waiting to hear back from our accountant (who I think is on vacation), but I'm curious what others think of this, because it's the first time I've heard this one and it doesn't sound right to me.

    Trademark Infringement from Germany

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 04:54 PM PDT

    Hey everyone!

First of all, I know we need a lawyer but just wanted to ask the community before we proceed.

Our company is a software company. We have had our name (a word that has no meaning) registered as a trademark in the US (only in US) since 2007. Our website name is also our name (www.[name].com). A few years ago we noticed that there is a german-based software company is using our name and has the same name registered as a trademark in Germany (only in Germany) since 2009. The German company also has an office in the US, and has a website www.[name-someotherword].com. On the website, they always refer to themselves as [name]. We have evidence that their company is confusing our customers.

Question: Should we go to court for trademark infringement? If so, what can we accomplish?
