I kinda FIRE'd and it's been terrible. Posted: 28 Aug 2021 02:20 PM PDT I have been following this sub for years and diligently working towards FIRE. This year, we (mid-30s married couple with two kids) got to $750k brokerage+cash, $800k home value and no mortgage or any debts. Then my husband got a windfall at work ($600k) as well as a big raise (income now at $400k/year). So I decided to pull the trigger and FIRE. I left my $200k/yr corporate job and retired at 36. I was not prepared for the onslaught of judgment from others as well as my own insecurities. Well-intentioned messages like, "You are so talented, why are you giving up?", friends who are working moms emphasizing, "Wow, I could NEVER give up my career to be with my kids!" and the most hurtful, my mother-in-law constantly calling me unemployed and a "lady of leisure". I picked my kids up from a sleepover at my in-laws house today and I could feel distinctly from her: "why am I watching your kids when you have no job?" Or maybe I am projecting. I don't know if it's FIRE, or the complexities of modern womanhood, but this has been a terrible experience. I wanted to FIRE so I could be a stay-at-home mom with my school-aged children. It seemed the best of both worlds -- they are in school during work hours, so I get time to myself, and I get a lot of quality time with them when they are home. But so far I just feel impatient with them and insecure with myself. I have a good daytime routine of running and lifting, going to bible study, hiking with friends. I cook nearly every day now for my family, which I really enjoy, and get enough time for naps and reading. Everything is going how I planned and how I wanted to spend my time. Why do I feel so horrible? And when will it stop? [link] [comments] |
Do you include a pension account (untouchable until 55) towards your Fire number? Posted: 27 Aug 2021 09:37 PM PDT My goal is to have $1 million invested to comfortably FIRE. I have $500k invested in ETFs. My employer requires me to work another 10 years to retire with a pension. My pension statement indicated that I have almost $500k (my contributions+company match+growth) in my pension account. If I were to quit tomorrow that $500k would be transferred to an account that I won't be able to withdraw from until 55. I am 45. Should I count my pension account towards my Fire number and be able to Fire tomorrow? [link] [comments] |
