Beware of American Express changes & charges

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 09:54 AM PDT

I've been an AMEX cardholder since 1984 (yes, true), and they just implemented some extremely shady shit this summer. First off, they chopped the due date from a month to three weeks as of June. Then, they mandated a mandatory "Pay Over Time" feature so that any late payment now gets subject to a 30% APR interest. I caught it this month and called them immediately, and they said that I was notified of the mandatory opt-in starting late last year, and that you have to call or request online to be reinstated to what AMEX has always been: a charge card, not a credit card.

They credited back the $300 in interest that they had charged me, but please be aware of this and call/raise hell for your own accounts if you use AMEX.

I find working for myself to be incredibly lonely and unfulfilling?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 03:45 PM PDT

This may sound strange to many of you and to my self as well as it was always a dream to be my own boss, answer to no one but me, have my own schedule. But honestly I just don't really enjoy it. It's a never ending cycle of Look for customers. Sell your service or product. Give customer the product. The customer (hopefully) pays you. It feels like an incredibly lonely journey and very unfulfilling. When I get home from this business I don't have satisfaction like I used to at previous jobs when a shift was over. The money is good and the freedom but that's all I find good in this.

The bank screwed me over: what to do?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 04:05 AM PDT

I'm buying an existing business. I have been working on this since April. The bank has known about the closing date since early June. I was approved for my loan, signed the documentation for it, and told I just need my lease agreement and insurance binder. Then I am good to close.

Closing for the transfer of ownership was set for 8am Wednesday. I reached out to the bank yesterday morning asking about coming in to get the bankers check and setting up a business checking and savings for funds to pay for the loan. I get a response at 5:30pm saying that they are still waiting on the SBA guarantee and it will be another 2-3 weeks before we can close. I am devastated. This man knew the closing date, knew when my last day at my old job was, told me of only two documents I needed and then "everything will be ready". I feel so lied to. I had to call the broker for the woman selling her business to let him know that we can't close on Wednesday. He said these things happen, but I'm still upset. My husband wants to sue the bank for my lost wages as I would have continued to work until the new closing. I am going to settle for asking for a lower interest rate. People are joking with me to make me feel better by saying "well now you can take a vacation before working 24/7 at your business", but I don't want a vacation. I want to have my business. Plus, I can't just start dropping money for a vacation when I have 2-3 weeks of lost wages and still need my savings for the closing costs. My husband and I are going to climb a mountain this weekend.

What should I do about the bank? What should I do with my unwanted vacation?

Taking a small loan of 13,000$ idea....

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 03:59 AM PDT

Right now my business is fine. It's just a lot of work. We have a budget and savings but I dont really want to take from that. So I thought to myself, and realized maybe I can use this pre approved small loan we can get to help me get the help I need for both secretarial and on the road services.

That way I can focus more on the more immediate concerns and delegate more to my employees and create a system of work flow and sales.

My idea is basically use the money to make more money since I see a way how. Ive crunched the numbers and this all seems manageable but does this sound like a dumb idea?

When selling a business, why does "goodwill" have any value?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 02:58 PM PDT

I'm looking at buying a business and the seller is using a multiple of SDE plus assets which includes "goodwill".

I'm super skeptical that "goodwill" has any value. It's clearly not a tangible asset like a truck that could be sold for cash. Wouldn't any value of goodwill be simply reflected in the revenue and hence already accounted for?

Opening a home bakery and unsure which documentation to keep for taxes- experienced persons, please advise

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 12:38 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

New "business owner" here and just want to make sure my ducks are in a row.

Is there any easy way to bookkeep that you guys have found? How much should I budget to hire a bookkeeper? It's just a simple home bakery and shouldn't have large volume so I don't want to pay a bookkeeper a ton of money to do it for me.

Which guidance could you give me here & other than purchase receipts for food, sales and materials, what else should I be tracking?

    Thanks!

(No DMs from business coaches etc please, I'll block you)

    Giving my friend a business?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 05:42 PM PDT

    Hi there.
KEEP IN MIND THIS IS A HYPOTHETICAL SITUATION.
If I wanted to give my friend a business I own, so how would I give one to him? Like what is the legal paperwork? Another question is that what would be the procedure of giving my friend an online business for example like an Amazon Business or any online business in general?

    Small business fail

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 07:57 AM PDT

So me and my friend started selling accessories on fb like everyone else you see now a days, due to covid it's kinda hard to get a job right now and scary. We started off small by buying 600 dollars worth of jewelry 3 different type of other accessories but we've only made 10 dollars /: it's been a week and a couple of days now. Anyone have an idea on what to do? Because now I'm starting to think this was all a waste. We live in a small city so we know what the style is here, we bought what we know people would like! But I guess no one is interested. Now we don't know what to do with the jewelry. Any advice on what to do ??

    Past company Amex charges

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 09:30 PM PDT

I got an email from an employer that I recently left questioning some charges on my company credit card. The charges were approved by superiors, but responding to the email will throw them under the bus and I don't want to jeopardize their jobs. Do I need to respond to the email? One charge was for a new transmission, I was assigned an out of town project and drove 10 hours round trip each week to do this job for almost a year. I was told to keep quiet but charge it to the project because the driving I did was way above and beyond normal wear and tear on the car. They didn't pay for mileage, they paid all my gas instead and I got a truck allowance. The other 3 I can justify as they were team building or dinners. I don't really have the $5k if they come back and make me pay them back. I knew I probably shouldn't have done it, but I literally put 600+ miles a week on my 2017 truck, and the only PM driving this much or even close to that much.

Question about opening first business bank account

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 09:27 PM PDT

    Greetings,

I'm in the planning stages for opening a small, one person business. Have done some research and came across several online banking options that might work for me. From what I'm reading, some people have accounts opened very quickly, others wait weeks with lots of back and forth email requests for more information, etc.

I'm considering applying to a handful at the same time (Mercury, NOVO, NBKC, perhaps one or two others), waiting for acceptance/denial, and then choosing, partly based on the experience. This way I don't have to wait for an answer that could take weeks and be a denial and waste time, having to start all over again with another bank.

My question is, are there any disadvantages to applying to a handful of banks at the same time? Don't want to potentially shoot myself in the foot.

Would you pay $250 if it meant your site was a little faster to load?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 08:43 PM PDT

Im thinking about expanding my offerings by compartmentalizing them and offering them separately to my main service. So I'm curious if it would be worth it for you and your business. I think it makes your site a solid 10-15% or more faster(needs more testing) which can equate to a few seconds longer as far as loading images.

Either way, this is a service I'm contemplating creating because it's built into my main offering rn but if people would be interested in it I'd be happy to make it a standalone offering.

I've stayed vague about what exactly I'm doing to draw attention to the results to see if that is worth the money but all it is is image optimization.

I have noticed that a lot of your sites and Wordpress/wix/Shopify sites in general have huge images(data intensive) when they don't need to be. This actually puts a pretty big dent into your optimization.

So my question is should I make this a standalone offering or just keep it built into my main service? Thanks

Hired a friend. Was a mistake.

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 01:29 PM PDT

Hired a friend to help out on operations and HR last year.

Long story short, it was a mistake.

The person lacks judgement, needs constant hand holding, often makes errors, and end up creating more work for the team.

We have to let the person go. It's awful because they're a personal friend that means well but we now know is the wrong fit.

Has anyone else been in this situation, and come up with any other scenarios or options to let them down lightly?

I've considered converting them to part time in order to handle low level duties. But am probably just kicking the can.

Do you think Ronaldo and manchester united did the right thing?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 11:01 PM PDT

How will Manchester United make money?

3 things to know about it

    1. With Ronaldo Joining Juventus in 2018, we saw how Juventus's Matchday revenue, broadcasting revenue and commercial revenue started increasing, because of Ronaldo's Impact which continued till he was in Juventus. Now that Ronaldo is back to his home club. Manchester United's all revenue stream will be filled.
    2. When the deal got confirmed on Friday with Juventus Football Club
Manchester United stock price went up by 5.8 % in New York trading and closed at $18.29. Because investors and fans were very happy over the sensational return of Cristiano Ronaldo to the club he called home more than a decade ago.

    3. Clubs earn money through sponsorships. Juventus, shirt sponsorship deal was $159 million in 2021. And its major reason was Ronaldo. And Manchester United is already in the Top 3 when it comes to T-shirt sponsorship deals. Now With Ronaldo in their team, their revenue will increase more.
