    It’s like that sometimes

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 04:51 PM PDT

Reminds me of the time I was chastised for being 6 hrs under my time budget at the end of busy season, when my grandma & grandpa had both passed away within months of each other (during that busy season)

Silly question, I know, but is that a true rumor?

My company is advertising my job on a job board

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 12:06 PM PDT

Basically the partner made it clear they hated me, they are actively advertising my job on a board but have given me no indication I am gonna be fired, they probably don't even know I found it. And probably will keep me doing staff bs until they find a replacement (seems they're having trouble finding one). I have like 10 months experience full time here but hate it. I am actively searching for another job and working with recruiters and have some money saved. Should I just slack off at this point?

    • Technology Assurance

    New Ways of Working

    • Currently keep working where comfortable - no set date for return to office
    • Hybrid model - but no details provided; "New Ways of Working" portal ETA end of month

    New Approach/Mindset to Comp

    • Merit Increase - average increase of: A (13%), S (17%), M (13%), SM (11%)
    • Promotion Increase - average base increase (including merit) of: S/M (30%), SM (20%)

Anyone else actually like going into the office sometimes as opposed to permanent WFH?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 04:38 PM PDT

Most of the pandemic, we were fully remote, but as of the spring, our offices opened up to a limited capacity. I've since been opting to go in to the office 3-5 days a week, depending on my work load. No one has mandated it or even asked me, its of my own volition. As someone who struggles with both tracking/ not eating my time and also maintaining boundaries— it's nice not only to know exactly when I started and when I stopped (I charge everything for the hours I'm physically here, minus admin meetings and lunch), but also enjoy being able to just close my laptop for the rest of the night when I pack up to leave. I know when I was fully remote— I'd have my laptop plugging in with messenger and email open 24/7. It was like I was never fully working, but never not working. My brain never got a break and I felt guilty charging all of my time because I didn't feel "100% focused".

Now that I've been going in, I'm able to maintain a separation between home and work. I feel that's pretty essential in public accounting if you want to maintain some semblance of good mental health. I totally understand people with long commutes— mine is only 10 minutes by car, so it's convenient for me. I'm also in a place with high vaccination rates (~80%) and there's plenty of distancing, so I'm not terribly concerned for my safety. I definitely appreciate the flexibility of working from home sometimes if I oversleep or am expecting a package, but overall, I'm really kind of lost on how so many people seem so adamant about wanting to work from home everyday permanently? Am I just some anomaly for actually enjoying being able to go into a physical office again?

    Yall really work that much?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 05:15 PM PDT

I work at a small firm, so maybe its a lot different than you big4 folks, but are you guys seriously working as much as this sub makes it seem? I work a lot when quarterly filings are due or during tax season, but otherwise its 9-4 when its not busy with plenty of PTO. Is it really required to work so much for everyone here?

I am getting to the interview stage, but nobody is giving me an offer. I've been applying to so many jobs and so many of them are not giving me any response.

Advice for stepping up my technology skills?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 09:58 PM PDT

I'm a CPA, currently controller of mid sized company (national firm audit background), interested in automation, analytics, and data visualization. I'm good with Excel and the various software I've used and I've had intro level experience with VBA, SQL, Tableau, and PowerBI. But I feel I lack a foundational understanding of how information systems work and work together.

I'm interested in building up this foundational understanding and some of the specifics that are relevant. In the future I'd love to be in a role helping mid-size companies leverage technology better, especially when so much of it is affordable. I've also worked with developers enough to know that translating between developers/IT and the business needs/accounting is a real challenge.

I've already done a data analytics certificate program that covered Excel/SQL/Tableau (with General Assembly) and I'm currently looking at some community college courses. I'm also open to other certification/boot camp type programs if they're relevant (I know there are a lot of free resources out there, I just know myself and that I need structure).

Any recommendations on subjects or programs that would be helpful for me?

Anyone directly involved in the hiring process- would this job history cause you concern?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 07:53 PM PDT

    1) Large, region firm: mid 2016 - late 2017, about a year and a half

    2) Very small, local firm: 2018 - mid 2019, just shy of 2 years there

    3) Slightly larger local firm: mid 2019 - now, just passed 2 years

First firm, went from intern to staff. Second was hired as staff. Current was hired as senior.

Cost Accountant vs Staff Accountant Career Progression

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 09:34 AM PDT

I've been working as a *GL Staff Accountant the last few years since graduating college and I'm relatively comfortable here, currently taking classes to hit the 150 units and eventually plan on taking exams to get the CPA.

A recruiter reached out a couple weeks ago regarding a cost accountant job and I figured it would hurt to interview. I a job offer (salary would be roughly 7% more)

My question is, would going into this cost accounting position pigeonhole me and limit future jobs?

I don't have a specific end goal for my career, so right now I want to position myself to have more opportunities for better jobs as I get more experience/education and don't know which of these would do that better.

So unmotivated for past few weeks. upcoming CFE

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 06:53 PM PDT

I requested about 8 weeks off to prep for CFE. The firm countered with 4 weeks off. I know for some 4 weeks are good enough. But I wanted and somewhat know that I needed 8 weeks. Last 2-3 weeks I have been so unmotivated. The pressure of CFE and work has created such a toxic routine and mindset that I ended up wasting alot of time just zoing out and not doing either. My work is sub-par with alot more review notes. And I haven't spent much time prepping either. I just want to focus on one thing for next few weeks which is prepare for CFE. But my firm being greedy just don't want to give me the time off. Now I have to look for the new job when I do get my 4 weeks of and study for the CFE.

    End rant.

Finance sis & bros getting pay bumps left & right

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 07:11 PM PDT

Can us accountants organize & ask for pay bumps much like our cousins over at IB did to get pay bumps… I mean the cost of everything is rising (Chipotle bowls used to be $9 now they are $12 đŸ¤’) i know PA isn't as lucrative as IB but we work similar hours & make just over half their salary, what are the odds of this happening?

Want to change career choice but feel like a failure

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 11:34 AM PDT

I just started my accounting career and I am honestly not enjoying it at all. Has anyone else felt like this? Is it just because I'm at a public accounting firm right now? My mom is pretty much the reason I was encouraged (more like forced) into accounting and I feel like if I decided to leave I would be a disappointment to my family. Maybe I'm over analyzing it too much and just need to give it time. I've been STRESSED.
