A driver turned into my lane, hit me, and now GEICO can’t reach her

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 01:52 PM PDT

I was driving in my hometown in Oregon and a lady hit me as she was changing lanes.

She definitely hit the side of my vehicle and that's obvious from the pictures. We also have a video of her explaining that she was turning into my lane and hit me.

Her insurance is with GEICO and we both filed claims with GEICO. However, she will not answer any calls from GEICO. Because GEICO can't reach her, they said they can't claim liability. They reviewed the pictures and videos, and said we are both at fault. It's ridiculous because I was driving in my lane at the speed limit, and she turned into my lane and hit me.

What can I do to fight the insurance company?

UPDATE: we called our own insurance agent and will file a claim for our own agency to fight for us. Also, our agent informed us that if the damage is more than $2500, we need to report it to the Oregon DMV. If that lady does not report or respond, the state will suspend her license.

Person who caused accident canceled insurance coverage?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 06:12 PM PDT

Hey guys, so I'm in a pretty awkward situation. I was involved in a car crash and rear ended and the person who rear ended me cancelled their coverage right after the accident. According to them, they lose coverage as of 12:01am that day when they cancel so they are no longer covered by the insurance.

Excuse my stupidity, but is that actually possible or am I being given the run around?

    Angry spouse damages vehicle

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 10:23 PM PDT

I recently initiated a divorce (nothing on paper yet) with my wife. One night, while I was out of the house she went into a rage( she suffers from borderline personality disorder) in her rage, one of the many things she destroyed was the front windshield of one of my vehicles. I'm not sure if my insurance will cover this, so please give advice. Vehicle is insured in Texas thru Safeco insurance. I have a comprehensive plan that includes a zero deductible window damage plan. Can I claim this?

Newborn has been "terminated from elected coverage". Anything we can do? Aetna

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 07:41 PM PDT

My wife and I had our first child just over 2 months ago. Like a good father (I thought) I added our daughter to our Aetna insurance policy (through my work).

Last Friday I received a letter in the mail stating that my daughter had been terminated from our policy.

I called today to understand why and Aetna said I had failed to send in a copy of her birth certificate.

As far as I can recall, this was the first communication we received stating that we needed to send in her birth certificate (although it's possible I could have missed it, I searched all my emails and never received a letter). I'm sure somewhere when I signed up it said I needed to submit this but I really do not remember!!

I am very concerned about my daughter no longer being on our policy. A few questions:

    • My daughter spent ~1 week in the NICU. Could we be liable for these expenses? Or would they go through my wifes insurance?
    • Is there ANYWAY we could still get her added back to my policy? Aetna said they are "looking into an appeal process" but it did not sound promising?
    • Might my employer have additional sway? Should I contact them?

Any guidance here would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Manulife vs SunLife

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 01:28 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm over 40 now and think some type of insurance might be wise.

I don't have any kids so maybe life insurance isn't necessary?

Still want something that provides assurance coverage for good health.

Been hearing good things about Manulife specifically, but coverage seems to end at 65, which seems like a weakness.

Also to consider, inflation may be an issue moving forward, and I'd want some type of investment strategy to guard against that.

Maybe also buying company's stock could help align interests?

Where to find farm liability insurance at a decent price when you don't own a home in the state where the farm property is?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 06:52 PM PDT

We own some farm property (crop land only -- no buildings, no animals) in North Dakota, but live in Minnesota. We rent the land out to a local farmer their who raises crops on the land and we are not involved at all in the farming operation.

We would like to buy basic farm liability insurance for the property, in case someone gets injured on the property. Previously, we were told by our insurance agent that our home owners policy with Liberty Mutual would also cover our property in ND. However, now another agent with a different agency that we are moving our home and auto policies to has looked into it said that home owners policies would not typically cover the farm property because someone is renting the property from us and that commercial uses of the property are excluded. Yet another agent at a different company, this one in North Dakota, has told us that he wouldn't have any farm liability insurance options unless we also owned a home in that state.

Anyone have suggestions on which insurance companies would offer farm liability coverage at a decent price to someone whose home is in a different state? Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated!

Public Insurance Adjusters for FEMA Flood Insurance?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 12:44 AM PDT

Hi guys, I was reading online about Public Insurance Adjusters and how Insurance companies try to lowball you. Question is how do you find a good one in Texas? Do you even need one in the first place (as in is this over hyped?) I went through various from many google searches and I see the same website layout with call us like a lawyer ad. I guess I'm simply overwhelmed, I don't even know if your supposed to try to make a claim yourself first or contact a Public Insurance Adjuster first. I read you have to make a claim within 60 days of a flood. Thank you in advance!

Insurance claims I was double-covered, when I was not

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 07:21 PM PDT

Going through this issue for a damn Covid test. Insurance wants to charge me almost $500 for a covid test. Their reasoning is that I was double covered. I was not, and my previous insurance had ended the month prior. Despite providing these documents, all this provider can do is say "we're escalating it". I now have received a letter stating this amount was sent to collections. What can I do here? I haven have tax documents proving my coverage never overlapped. Is this something I can fight with small claims? I just feel like they're playing scorched-earth, and trying to lead me along until I'm forced to pay collections. I can never get anyone on the phone and it's just exhausting. Help!

Hog walked in front of my 2019 charger and did damage to the front.

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 11:04 PM PDT

So a few days ago a hog suddenly walked in front of me while I was going 70 mph and it did some ugly damage to the front of my car, filed a claim with my insurance already. But I'm wondering how much in value it'll go down? I was planning on trading it in a couple months and now I'm nervous on how stuff is going to play out, will the dealership lowball me or is it possible this incident won't show up at all on carfax? Is there a way to NOT lose money over this bs?!

Properly billing HO insurance for disaster tree removal

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 09:26 PM PDT

Hi, new here - I checked the sidebar, hope this is the right place to post this.

I run a tree company based out of New Orleans, Louisiana. For the last few years, I've chased hurricanes and tornadoes doing disaster removal (removing trees off houses and removing structurally compromised trees).

I've somehow stayed away from billing insurance companies, but as time has gone on, and having spoken to some other companies, I've realized I can bill them and communicate directly with the adjusters, sort of removing the customer from the equation once we're on the same page about the game plan and they sign the contract.

We've just experienced a particularly powerful Cat. 4 hurricane here in SE Louisiana, and people are really stressed. This seems like a pretty simple thing I can do to make it a little easier (As easy as it can be with a karate-chopped house and rain on the way).

I'm seeking advice on how to communicate clearly with the adjusters, and how I should format my contracts so as to not get shafted.

From what I understand, there are two portions to the tree removal process; Getting the tree off the house, and getting the debris to the street for FEMA to pick up.

My intention is to bill in a line-item style, hourly. This would include an hourly rate for the climber, the groundsmen, our trucks and trailers, and our bobcat. Any insight or advice y'all can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading. Power's out for the foreseeable future, and it's looking like some l o n g days ahead. We're a bit outside the eyewall here, and there's been pretty catastrophic damage. Hits different when it's in your own backyard.

    Stolen tools.

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 08:56 PM PDT

I'll try to keep this short. Had my tools, personal items and vehicle stolen 6 months ago. I feel like my insurance company has been giving me road blocks the whole process. Finally got my evaluated schedule of loss. Almost every item is grossly undervalued or completely wrong. I had spent 15 hours providing 90% of original receipts from as far back as 2009. Provided replacement receipts and provide my contract with my employer listing tools required of employment and that they need to be of commercial/industrial quality. Adjuster is using prices based on websites they found . some items are completely wrong. Some items are shown as unavailable or out of stock. Some websites shipping costs are equivalent or more than the item itself. Also they used mastercraft tools as reference almost exclusively.

Is this allowed? I know they are trying to minimize the cost of the claim but feels fraudulent on their part. Example a $50 tool of commercial quality with original purchase price and they use a 17$ value of a mastercraft tool.

Can this be argued against or do I have no say? Thanks

Got a fairly random check from Blue ShieldCalifornia

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 08:34 PM PDT

So, I got a check from them today for a few hundred bucks. I checked my app and it looks like it's tied to a covid test I took. I took two in a week (both negative! 🙂) and it looks like for the second one they paid me for some reason? It's a legit check, the paper I have and the app PDF all match up. I'm confused, has anyone else dealt with anything similar? Should I wait a couple days before cashing it or just do it and tell them to deal with their broken finance department if they say something later?

Best general legal insurance ideally covering worldwide but US ok

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 04:16 PM PDT

I'm looking to get legal insurance for the US that basically covers me like medical insurance. Or that will insure up to a certain amount of legal costs. Ideally, this would extend abroad, but for now mostly I'm interested in the US. All of this would be if someone sued me for any reason.

If there is a type of coverage which covers your costs in suing someone else I would be interested in that as well, although I think that is less likely.

I looked at ARAG and called them, but for individuals they only do a 99$ one time fee to give you 25% off services until a particular engagement is complete.

Loss of Use due to no power during Hurricane Ida

I live in New Orleans and as you may have heard, we do not have power and may not have power for several weeks. Besides that little hindrance, my property is fine. Does anyone have a sense of whether or not a hotel stay would be covered under my Loss of Use policy in this scenario? I haven't been able to get through to my insurance company yet.

Penske Moving Truck Rental (12ft) - GVW and insurance

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 03:58 PM PDT

I see a lot of people saying to get the insurance for moving truck rentals. I chatted with Geico and they said that I was covered as long as the weight was under 10,000. One site I visited said that a 12 ft truck was between 9500 and 10050 fully laden, and another gave a figure of 8,600 (assuming a payload of 2,400).

How would I even know what the Gross Vehicle Weight would be? I am not taking any furniture. Just boxes.

Is it wise to get the insurance, and if so, which of the policies should I get?

"Limited Damage Waiver (LDW) LDW coverage relieves you of financial responsibility should any loss or damage occur to the truck or towing equipment except if the vehicle or equipment is used in any manner that violates the terms of the rental agreement.

Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) PAI offers accidental death and medical coverage to the driver of your truck and your truck's passengers in excess of your personal insurance coverage.

Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI)* SLI protects the renter and any listed authorized drivers against claims made by a third party for bodily and/or property damage sustained as a result of an accident while you are operating your Penske truck. This coverage is excess over the underlying insurance specified within your signed rental agreement up to $1,000,000. Renter and all drivers must be 21 years of age to purchase."

Edit: I am in California and driving from Southern to Northern California.

Measuring sq ft of a dwelling for insurance.

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 07:38 PM PDT

Is it as simple as it sounds? I need to provide the square feet of the dwelling and the shop on a property I bought is there anything special I need to know? I'm capable of measuring and calculating the sq ft. I'm just curious if there's any thing else I should know specific to an insurance situation. Now that I type it out it feels like a silly question. But I'm very naive in the realm and wanna get it right the first time. Do I measure the outside of the building or the inside of the rooms? Do I measure the deck? I just need some guidance if anyone can help me. Thanks a ton for checking out my post.

Edit: I'm in Oregon and this will be insured under the Oregon Fair Plan. The house is a funky old hippie cabin in the woods. It was not done built to code. The insurance broker I've been in communication with has told me that the Fair Plan is my best bet for this reason.

Insurance Agents, has anyone gone from working health/life to P&C?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 08:00 AM PDT

I'm currently working individual health and life for those under 65. The constant costumer service/complaints I go through because the insurance didn't pay for their labs or whatever is driving me off the deep end.

Has anyone transitioned from health to P&C would recommend it?

How lucrative can it really be and have you found it less stressful dealing with clients?

Liberty Mutual saying I owe them money because of a mistake their underwriter(s) made???

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 05:29 PM PDT

So I had never had my own insurance before up until last year. I do have an at fault accident so that along with never being insured before and being under 25 made my premium ridiculously high (as expected). I decided to go with Liberty (through a third party company in my neighborhood) as they quoted me the lowest premium. I paid the 6 months IN FULL up front - I decided to drop them as after the 6 months they decided to increase my premium by $800 (mind you I had no type of accidents or violations). Then I saw they sent me a statement saying I owed them $477 for the 6 months. I spoke to a rep and they said this was because the underwriter(s) made a mistake originally…really? I told them that I shouldn't be at fault for their own incompetence and if I had known my premium would've been an additional $500, I wouldn't have gone with them in the first place. The rep said I was right and they would get this removed (this was back in May). I never heard anything from Liberty so I just forgot about it until now I am seeing they sent this claim to credit collections. I'm not sure if I'm the one at fault here because I do not know much about insurance but this does not seem right. Now my credit may get messed up because of an error they made? That makes absolutely no sense. Can someone tell me if this is the norm/what my options are?

Transitioning to Life Insurance career from P&C

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 05:24 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I am currently working for a P&C Insurer (commercial underwriting side and Canadian) and having a strong urge to switch to life & disability insurance. Could you offer any thoughts as to which industry you personally prefer and how these two compare?

It's not that I hate P&C, but I've always been more interested in helping people overcoming death of their family/debilitating disease/accident. It's what inspired me to get a job in insurance in the first place. Unfortunately, the only post-secondary program for insurance I could find was P&C - hence my current employment there.

What are your thoughts and what could I do to get this career started (types of entry level jobs, licenses required, etc)?

What Would Happen If Insurance Disapeared?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 09:27 AM PDT

[This is a question for the entirety of the US and is not specific to any state]

I've asked this question to my personal friends before and it's always interesting to hear the different opinions (and often, the lack of understanding they have for the question ha!), so I thought I'd pose it to this group simply to see what you all think.

    So here's the question, and I want you to be very careful when you read it so you understand;

What would happen if tomorrow ALL insurance companies disappeared?

The insurance companies aren't coming back. The answer isn't, "There would just be new ones!" The question is assuming that insurance was no longer a thing. It's gone, but the companies that once relied on insurance system for payment are still in operation.

What would happen to the industries that are touched by insurance if the insurance companies disappeared tomorrow?

I'll tell you what I think would happen in the comments.

Edit to add: Please keep in mind I don't think my answer is correct nor do I think I know what I'm talking about. When it comes to insurance and how it works I understand probably 10% of the entire system. The entire point of asking this question is to get people thinking and see if it's possible for us to think outside the box. Keep in mind, there is no right or wrong answer because this isn't something that is happening. Just keep an open mind and discuss what you think might happen.

Edited to add: If you're going to come into this thread and say shit like, "I'm a professional, I know what I'm talking about," just stop typing. This is a hypothetical situation. The answer isn't, "It can't happen." We know it can't happen. Humor the question and answer it as it has been asked or just leave. We don't need your commentary about how it's not possible and you're so smart and blah blah blah. We get it. You're smart. You know insurance. You love it. Great. Cool. Good for you. Answer the question or move on. There are other questions in this subreddit that can use your expertise, go over there if you're going to come in here and be a dick.

Hail damage to house siding. Insurance is isn’t helping.

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 04:45 PM PDT

Looking for some feedback here. Had a bad hail storm that punched holes through our vinyl siding of house. House is on pilings, with the damage on 2nd floor of house (so really 3rd story up from ground, about 30-40 ft up).

Got an adjuster to come out. Sent in report, and they came back and said damage didn't meet my deductible (6k). However, they didn't include the cost of a lift which it will certainly need.

So questions: 1). Can I ask for another adjuster? 2). Contractor that I got a quote for isn't breaking down the estimate for me to send in to insurance, even though I asked him. Get another? 3). Siding is 20+ years old. I really doubt we can match the siding color. How do I deal with this? I don't want a Frankenstein house.

Pitfalls of Umbrella Policies? Most comprehensive and reliable umbrella policies?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 04:20 PM PDT

I am looking into Umbrella policies at the moment and wanted to know if there are any interesting little pits I call fall into.

I'm looking at State farm, nationwide and Chubb at the moment.

My main priorities are coverage in cases of lawsuits, i.e. libel, defamation etc where my attorneys fees and potential losses are covered.

International coverage would be a nice bonus.

This would be for the united states.
