Low income graduate here, Should I start making payments during the Covid grace period or just try to save cash?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 03:00 PM PDT

Hi, I am a non traditional student with a disability and graduated in December 2020 with about $31k in sub/unsub student loans, no private loans. I was making interest payments so do not have any outstanding interest since the freeze.

My grace period was supposed to end in June but due to the Covid payment freeze, I won't need to make any payments until October 2021. During this extended grace period of time I was advised by the loan rep to pay as much as possible while interest is frozen so it hits the primary loan amount directly. I was advised to start with the highest loan/interest rate combo. This will help lower the interest/kill the biggest fish etc.

It sounds like a great idea and I understand that this is an unprecedented opportunity to get a head start on payments. However, my financial and living situation has become unstable. My income is only about $950 per month and my roommate is moving out soon. I have a well stocked emergency fund and was thinking of taking a few thousand out to out towards my biggest loan. Still it will be pretty tight when my roommate leaves. I will also lose my health insurance assistance soon and am nervous about meeting high deductibles and premiums as I have some expensive medications/specialists.

A friend has told me to not pay anything toward my student loans during this extended grace period as it will just be a drop in the bucket. To just try to save as much cash as possible to add to the emergency fund so I have a big cushion when roommate leaves.

Feeling really torn about what to do as I don't want to miss out on this opportunity to make a dent in my loans and don't want to be unprepared for shouldering the increased rent/bills when roommate leaves.

Any insight or advice is appreciated!!

Girlfriend Has Student Loan Debt that she never took out (Louisiana)

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 04:33 PM PDT

Today we uncovered a mess. While applying for a loan and pulling our credit, we stumbled upon student loan debt in my girlfriend's report, which was strange because she wasn't supposed to have any. Nor did she ever take out student loans.

So we created an account on fed loan and lo and behold; a balance of nearly $29,000 appeared.

She has no recollection of taking out any loans except for one- her first year of school. A loan to help her pay for rent. It was for $1700 roughly. She has been paying this one and it's balance has gone down since with roughly $700 remaining. That one pulled on the report, but not as a fed loan.

She never accepted any federal student loans, never received any funding at all. She attended LSU on a full ride thanks to TOPS (a scholarship program we have here in Louisiana that pays tuition).

She graduated in May, so the 6 month window would have had her paying back in November, however her loans that we didn't know existed have been in forbearance.

The loans on her credit report read as: "Open account; account closed due to transfer." Every fed loan also has the same account number. I'm not sure if that's typical though.

We are utterly stunned. No idea what to do or where to start.

I thought student loan payments were on hold til September

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 06:21 PM PDT

But my wage garnishment started back up maybe 6 weeks ago. It's not my private loans because I talked th them. They said they don't garnish wages, that is only done for public loans. Can anyone help?

    Is it worth it?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 04:07 PM PDT

I'm going into my 2nd year at a top university where I'm pursuing my degree in CS. I'm an out of state student and am paying about 40k a year. I imagine how much student debt I'll be in and it's causing me extreme anxiety and depression. Is it worth it? Should I transfer into an in-state university where the cost is overall cheaper? I really don't know what to do.

No idea how I'll be and to afford this. Anyone have tips on refinancing/lowering payments. Any institutions/banks in particular that can work?

Are there any student loans for people with bad credit/no job?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 03:56 PM PDT

I'm going to be a senior in university this Fall. Even with federal student loans, I will be $7000 short to attend this year. Normally, I've worked part-time to make up this difference, but I won't be able to work because I'm required to do unpaid undergraduate research in order to graduate (Which is already a job itself).

I don't have anyone to cosign for me, while I do have what is considered a good credit score (758 Transunion/757 Equifax), I do have a bad mark (Eviction from 4-5 years ago when I couldn't pay my rent when I first started school). On top of having not enough/no income, I probably wouldn't even get approved for a student loan.

Does anyone know of any options?

First gen student, single parent can’t help because she never attended/doesn’t understand

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 01:22 PM PDT

I have been very reluctant to ask questions/for help because I am absolutely ignorant to the subject. I don't understand anything about student loans and I am terrified. I don't even have a bank account but I'm going to be an independent student, my EFC is 0 obviously and my total financial aid is $35,492 per year (private university).

I assumed that my tuition was ~$34k a year because that's the undergrad bachelor tuition. I did not realize that my specific BSN program was $68k and now I'm very scared. I'm terrified actually. It says BSN postbacc. so I don't think it applies to me since I'm an undergrad? But I'm not sure I'm sorry.

I don't understand if I'm actually paying for the ~$68k or not. I've got ~$24k in awards and ~$11k in loans. Does that mean I'm only paying that ~11k per year ? or am I gonna have to subtract that $35,492 from the ~$68k and take out a f load of private loans ?

Sorry if this is a dumb question I'm really lacking resources and am honestly just too scared to ask dumb questions to the resources I DO have. Thank you in advance .

Started loan rehabilitation today for Federal Perkins loan

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 05:10 PM PDT

I started paying today June 1st for loan rehabilitation. Do you recommend that I pay on the 1st of every month? I'm so nervous. I've never been late with any bills in my life.

This is probably an easy answer, but I want to be super clear about this process. Thank you in advance!!

    Student Loan Forgiveness (BSN, CA)

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 03:42 PM PDT

I was wondering if anyone has any tips or advice when looking student loan forgiveness programs. I will be completing my BSN in CA. I have been looking into different programs , however a lot of them have specific terms or conditions. For example the BSNLRP but the thing is I will not be working for any facilities that offer this program. I have been paying back my private loan slowly while working and going to school. It would be a huge weight off my shoulders to have the federal loan completely paid off. Any tips or advice are greatly appreciated.

Paying off higher interest loan with refund from lower interest loan?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 09:43 AM PDT

I'm going to be in school for 3 more years. I have a federal unsubsidized loan and a Grad PLUS loan. I had a significant refund from the unsub loan, and decided to put it towards repayment. I put it towards the higher interest Grad PLUS loan.

    1. Is there any problem with me doing this?

    2. Is paying of the GP with the unsub loan worthwhile, or is it better to keep the unsub amount as low as possible?

What's the quickest way I can get out of default (5.5k)

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 12:47 PM PDT

I have 2 loans totalling 5.5k. I realized I am eligible for a grant and a decent sized loan if I can get out of default.

What's the quickest way to get back on track?

Basically, how many monthly payments would I have to make and how quickly can I be back in school?

Loan rehab application: how to include the kids I share with my ex wife?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 08:10 AM PDT

Should I include both of my children under family size if I am not primary caretaker?

Section 3, line 23 asks for my family size: "Your family size includes you...and your children...if the children will receive more than half of their support from you."

My situation: divorced with joint custody of two minor children. In my state, one parent has to be designated the primary caretaker, and that's their mom. We split visitation about 60%(her)/40%(me). Child care, extracurriculars, and medical bills/Rx are split 50/50. Given this background, here are my two trains of thought:

    1. As part of our divorce agreement, we each get to claim one of the kids as a dependent for taxes. So it seems that I would only include one of the kids as part of my family size.

    2. BUT I think about child support— the idea is to replicate what I would be contributing if we were still living together. And I make waaaaay more than she does, so it seems by this logic that I would include BOTH kids as I am contributing more than half of their support (lodging, food, clothing).

    What say you???
