Biggest Red Flags for Accounting Job Postings

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 06:02 PM PDT

    Hello Good Accountants of Reddit!

I was recently looking at a job posting and ran across a phrase that screamed red flag to me "If you enjoy being constantly challenged, this is the environment for you!". For a non-management industry job, to me "Constantly challenged" just screams "absolute bedlam reigns supreme" or "extremely understaffed".

I thought it might be helpful (and amusing) for the community to share your biggest job advertisement red flags. Do you have any that make a job an instant "no" or any to watch out for that can be easily missed?

The reward for working hard in public accounting is more work. Thats all I wanted to say 😭😭😭

Edit: thanks for the awards! I'm currently a senior at big 4 but I do know it's not just me who is struggling. Everyone is. Keep on grinding and leave when the right opportunity arrives fellas

How nervous should I be that my CFO can't make a chart of accounts

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 03:49 PM PDT

    Hey Y'all,

I'm working as a consultant to help clean up some bookkeeping errors at a distribution business. The CFO doesn't like how the financial's look, not the values within the statements just the titles and number of accounts (which have no real pattern and do look awful). I'm only hired to do one thing but he keeps delaying the project and having me train staff while he "works on the COA". Is this normal?

It only gets worse the more you know. Pretty sure I'm headed to the slammer at some point, guys.

Thank you to the co-worker in the next cubicle for coming into the office rather than working from home.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 09:09 AM PDT

Really appreciate hearing you cough your lungs out every 15 minutes, sneeze profusely and blow your nose even though the firm has a teleflex program where we can work from home.

Sincerely, the co-worker who doesn't want to get sick but inevitably will.

[CAN] (B4) Just got some bad feedback, how badly will it affect my end of year performance review?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 05:19 PM PDT

Feeling kinda depressed about it. Do people ever get formal feedbacl that says "Did a great job, nothing to improve on", or is it okay for it to be a list of things to improve.

I did fuck up by spinning a wheels a lot (I'm a first year) by trying to figure out problems myself instead of asking other people.

Just trying to not get fired at the moment, and hopefully not in my 2nd year.

Anybody in industry feeling bored (unchallenged), but make too much money to care too much?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 06:41 AM PDT

This is my second industry job making 6 figures in a LCOL area, I find the work less than challenging, but I feel like it's a symptom of having jobs working 12-16 hour days half the year before. Just curious if I'm alone.

What are some other careers that current accountants might want to consider if they don't think they have a future in accounting?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 01:23 PM PDT

So the long and short of it is, I am an auditor at a mid sized local firm and I am absolutely miserable. I have several years of industry experience, but working in public for the past 6 months or so has been awful, and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight(we're still super busy). What are some other careers where my skills and CPA license would make me valuable and allow me to have a better work life balance? What type of job titles should I seek out that I would likely be a good fit for?

    Should I take the offer?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 07:36 PM PDT

So I just got a job offer today from a law firm.

I am currently making 66k no overtime at my current company as a staff accountant with good benefits. The law firm offered me 60k plus overtime with better benefit.

Should I take the offer? I'm a bit lost.

    Reinsurance recoverable

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 08:39 PM PDT

    Hey peoples

Not sure if this is an accounting question or an insurance question so sorry if this is the wrong place

By an insurance company, is the asset "reinsurance recoverable" the amount that insurance companies could potentially receive for claims or is it the amount they are already owed from reinsurers based on claims filed?

I don't understand if I did something wrong or what

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 07:55 AM PDT

I'm a big 4 audit associate, joined in January. I was on the same client for busy season, then five subsidiary audits, then a quarterly review. Three weeks ago, I was let go from the team because the budget didn't work with having two associates. I enjoyed working with my team, so I was pretty bummed out... But now, I've had two weeks of boring software testing, and now I'm going onto an Ebp audit.

But it's been apparent that I'm not on a 'main' client for a month now. How is it that I'm still not on a team? Is that normal? The other associates seem to have their main clients and then other summer things scheduled.

I was told my reviews are where I should be for when I started, but just wish I could be on a 'main' client again. Any advice? I've already reached out to my deployment person, past manager, coach, etc

Has anyone here taken the Certified Internal Auditor exam?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 02:53 PM PDT

I used to be in Big4 Assurance and moved to industry. Now I am joining Big4 Risk Advisory/Consulting soon and was wondering if I need CIA title to upskill myself? For those who are now CIAs, do you recommend it and at what point in a consultant's career must it be taken?
