Robinhood trading app has given my account to someone else, locked me out, and won't respond to contact. Now what?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 08:18 AM PDT

    This is in Pennsylvania, USA.

I had just over $40K in the Robinhood trading app. One day I woke up to a list of e-mail notifications saying things along the lines of "thanks for changing your personal information, thanks for opening a debit account, thanks for charging $5,000, thanks for selling X stocks" from Robinhood. Obviously someone had broken into my account, changed the personal information, and was stealing my money. My account was set up for 2-factor authentication, so it should have been impossible for someone to break in without me getting a text, but here we are.

This should be a no-brainer for Robinhood to identify and resolve, right? Wrong. There's literally no way to contact Robinhood directly outside of sending them an e-mail. When I e-mail them, they respond with form letters saying "thanks for contacting us, we'll look into it and get back to you." It's been a week. In the meantime there's no way to access my account (the thief changed the password), I have no idea what's happening to my money, or if/when I'll get it back. I need that money; it's basically my life's savings.

If you've never tried to contact Robinhood before you may think I'm exaggerating how difficult it is, but there are actually several lawsuits from people in similar situations. Apparently they're famous for just not responding to theft cases.

It seems I may need to sue them to get my money back. And even if I get it back, I feel like I'm owed something for this amount of stress, not to mention however much money I'm losing by not being able to buy and sell as I had planned. How do I find an attorney who can help me with this?

I was assaulted and my home was broken into but the police won’t arrest the man responsible

    Posted: 31 May 2021 10:00 PM PDT

My neighbor and I got into an argument where he proceeded to try to attack me and shoved my boyfriend, who was trying to shield me, to try and get to me. 2 hours later, he broke into my home when I wasn't there and stole multiple items out of my house.

I called the police and they talked to me for over 3 hours and they said they couldn't make an arrest because he claimed that we gave him consent to enter our home and then asked to have a lawyer present and he would no longer talk to the police. We told the police that was a lie and we have never given him permission to enter our home. Our landlord also said he did not give our neighbor permission to enter our home.

They said they couldn't legally make an arrest because they couldn't prove who was right and who was wrong, even though our landlord also vouched for us as well as multiple witnesses.

I'm so frustrated and actually quite scared. This man is very aggressive and has mental issues. I don't feel safe at my apartment so I'm staying with a friend tonight. What else can I do to make sure he gets charged for what he did? I don't understand how they couldn't have arrested him when it was so obvious that he was lying and he is dangerous.

    So very upset right now.

    Edit: I live in Florida.

I have a 21(F) Sister who has special needs and lives in a 1:1 group home. I believe she is being abused, maybe even sexually to the point she doesn't even realize. My family and I have exhausted all of our options and need help. (Wisconsin).

    Posted: 31 May 2021 04:13 PM PDT

Hi Reddit, I will try and give as much background information as possible. Not sure if I used the correct flair.

    My sister is 21 years old and lives in her own group home by herself. She has some behavioral issues, but I don't think they matter too much in this scenario because I'm more concerned with how she is being treated by several staff members. She calls myself and others multiple times a week bawling her eyes out because her anxiety is through the roof. A few things she's told me that staff have said and done to her are as follows;

"I'm going to beat your ass." Said by multiple female staff, also stated to others outside of the house to people who don't work with my sister. I believe this would be a HIPPA violation.

"Don't worry about how I get into your house, it's a secret that nobody knows, and I can do it whenever I want" Said by male staff we will call Robert

Turning the heat up to 90*F at night (other staff as witness, but no reporting is done) Done by Robert

Been known to watch her sleep at night. Robert

Not allowing her to use the phone. Robert

She has told me that she is afraid to leave her room to use the bathroom or to get her medication when Robert is there. If it's an emergency bathroom break she will peak out of her room at night and run to the bathroom.

As her relatives, we have called in to the non-emergency Police line and asked for a welfare check, called and reported to her guardian, called the guardian emergency line, and have begun having her journal anytime she is scared, anytime something inappropriate has been said, and every time this one male worker works with her. Things will change for a short time, like a suspension to staff, but then immediately go back to how they always are. My family is tired, my sister is tired, and we need help.

    Thank you.

Edit: I didn't expect this to blow up, I will try and respond to all questions, thank you everyone for your help thus far.

Previous owners left loads of junk; want a cut now that it's valuable

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 06:39 AM PDT

Michigan: We recently purchased a house from some friends of my in-laws. The house is on a decent amount of property, so we included some extra items (tractor, snow plow, ATV's) in the sale agreement. We closed March 6. The previous owners had some delays with their next house and we signed a lease to rent them the house until April 31.

When we finally started moving in, we found that they had left way more stuff than we expected. I didn't expect the home to be completely empty, but there are rooms full of their old junk and an outbuilding with more.

We tried to contact them by voicemail, text, and email throughout May to see if they were going to come back and collect more of their property. They did not return or acknowledge any of our messages, so we started sorting the junk. Turns out that some of the items were fairly collectible/valuable, and we've made about $8K off the best stuff. There's probably another $2K-$4K in random FB marketplace stuff still to be sold. None of these items were being treated as collectible or valuable; they were sitting under years of dust and racoon shit before we cleaned it off.

Because the previous owners know my inlaws, word about the windfall got back to them, and now they are blowing up our phones, ranting about us selling their property illegally and demanding we give them the money "minus a finders fees".

They haven't involved a lawyer yet, as far as I know, but I just want to be prepared. Do they have a leg to stand on? It seems like a reasonable person would have assumed they abandoned their property, but I know nothing about real estate law.

    Wells Fargo Probate Fiasco

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 01:19 PM PDT

My brother died in March in a Florida hospital intestate. I live in Tennessee. In my brother's personal effects from the hospital was a Wells Fargo debit card. I concluded that my brother had a checking account and a used car. I called Wells Fargo and was told that I could freeze my brother's account pending the legal process to gain control of my brother's account in an effort to reimburse some of my expenses regarding his death (about $2500). The phone rep said that I would personally have to go to a branch and present the original death certificate. The next day I arrived at the Wells Fargo branch only to be told that the phone rep had frozen the checking account and I didn't need to make the trip into the branch. I presented a copy of my brother's original death certificate and the branch rep took a copy and checked my ID. Further, the branch rep would not give me the amount that my brother had in checking. This impeded my efforts to get a Summary Administration from the Florida court due to you have to itemize the assets of the deceased.

My brother's car was repositioned to the parking lot of his church. I told the pastor I wanted to donate the car but needed to petition the Florida court for a Summary Administration.

At some point in communicating with Wells Fargo, I was provided with a telephone number to their probate/estate department. This phone rep told me that I had to get a separate court order so that Wells Fargo could give me the amount in my brother's checking and then proceed with the Summary Administration.

Story and internal process at Wells Fargo keeps changing within my many contacts with their reps.

I wrote a letter to the probate judge explaining that Wells Fargo was impeding my efforts to complete my petition. The cost to petition the court was $345 with no guarantee that you will obtain the order. You also have to include a family genealogy to make sure there are no other heirs. I ballparked the total amount of my brother's assets at $4408 and this included the car. My brother was on disability and considered indigent.

I received a denial from the Florida probate court and I was given 60 days to submit an amended petition. One of the items I overlooked was the need to publish a notice to my brother's creditors.

I wrote an email to the Florida county clerk and I received a response that they would forward to the probate judge. I then spent $150 to publish the notice to my brother's creditors. Somehow that and the email triggered the Summary Administration in my favor with the order stating I have 100% ownership of both assets.

I endorse the title to my brother's car and complete all of the necessary paperwork then overnight to the church in Florida.

I take the original Summary Administration to the same Wells Fargo branch. I ask to speak to the branch manager because I have a bad feeling due to what appear to be the games of Wells Fargo. I am told that they need the rep I originally saw at the branch has little recollection of my meeting with her and does not have the copy of the death cert, has not begun a file, etc. I am then informed that my brother had two other savings accounts with them. I am beginning to get upset. I said then either give me the money from the checking per the court order or transfer the money from the savings into the checking and as long as the amount doesn't exceed the amount I had to ballpark all should be ok. Wells Fargo would not give me either. It seems Wells Fargo has their own internal legal code that they believe supersedes a court order from a Florida probate judge.

I have been royally jerked around by Wells Fargo. I filed a complaint with CFPB to no avail. The clerk who responded to the complaint merely circled back the branch and regurgitated the information that I received from them. It was like talking to a piece of cardboard. I have written to the CEO of Wells Fargo as recently as yesterday.

After this, I am emotionally played out and for some reason, I feel like the idiot in this. Could use any helpful advice.

NYC- balcony in high rise obstructed by wooden beam

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 06:31 AM PDT

Hello, I live on the 8th floor of a high rise in Manhattan. We were told that construction would be occurring for 12+ months on our building to ensure our balconies were safe and compliant. After several months of construction work, I woke up to the construction workers placing a wooden beam and obstructing my balcony door from being opened. I live in a studio and this is the only window. When I contacted management they told me there was nothing that could be done and the contractor would not take this down for another 9-12 months. The beam was placed on the outside so I can't open the door from the inside including the screen door. This is also taking away a substantial part of the overall square footage of my apartment.

Is this illegal given this is obstructing my only window? I was given no warning of the beam. From a fire marshal perspective, is this legal? I am still working from home during the pandemic and raised the issue of claustrophobia and this being my only window to management.

Thank you! Any advice would be great!

Edit: The building manager responded to my email this morning and told me that there is a law with DOB to prevent people from getting hurt and that there is work above me with rigs and cables. I will say I have had work above me for the last 6 months prior to the beam going up. I told the manager about my concern regarding ventilation and was told that they would raise the central A/C and that this should suffice.

Car dealer says they made a mistake on the lease and want me to sign again [US CA]

    Posted: 31 May 2021 03:19 PM PDT

We signed a lease for a new plug-in hybrid vehicle in California, which was eligible for the $7500 Federal Tax credit. Since it's a lease, we are not able to claim the tax credit, but the manufacturer, the owner during the lease should have been able to. Because we pushed for it, they agreed to add the credit as a rebate.

They called 24 days after we signed and said they made a mistake and put the credit on wrong line item. I checked the lease paperwork, and the Lessor's Right to Cancel was 10 days if they were unable to assign the Lease to a financial institution. I've already got my account with the bank and made my first payment.

Their voicemail said the terms of the lease are the same, monthly payment, and residual value. I called them back to talk about the situation, out of state for a long period of time in Washington, and they agreed to send the new lease via FedEx. When I received it, the residual value and optional purchase price was the $7500 higher than the original lease.

    1. Do I have any obligation to sign?
    2. If not, this is a real dirty practice by the dealer. What can I do to ensure they don't try this with other people that are not paying attention? Are there any organizations I can report them to that will actually do something about it?

    Thanks in advance!

    Homelessness Issue

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 12:54 PM PDT

Hi all! In September 2019 we bought our first home. One year later, a man with a large and inoperable RV towed his vehicle in and parked outside our house. He has been living in the RV since. All sorts of random people come in and out all hours of the night, they fight and scream a lot, litter trash on our block and at one point a dude showed up with a gun screaming and waiving the gun around so I called the cops who showed up thirty minutes later and did nothing. The temporary tags on the RV are well past expired but the city still will not mark the RV for tow.

The city treats this as a homeless outreach situation and will not force them to leave. The HOA "can't do anything because that street is not in their jurisdiction".

The man won't leave voluntarily after asking him to.

I'm not an jerk, I consider myself an empathetic person and understand tough situations cause I've been there, but it seems wrong that we pay a ton in property tax and our enjoyment of our property is being hindered. Any advice?

Can I ship Twinkies to Sweden (from US)?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 12:38 PM PDT

Pretty much the title. I have a buddy in Sweden who is obsessed with Twinkies and laments that he cannot find them there. I wanted to ship some to him for his birthday, but was worried about whether that could get me into trouble with customs. Will they intercept my Twinkies? Do I have any liability shipping them to another country? I understand it's a dumb post, but I'm 100% serious and doing this out of an abundance of caution, I really appreciate any advice. Thanks

My parents keep trying to hack into my accounts; They live in FL while I am in GA

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 09:27 AM PDT

I cut my parents off in March but last night was the 2nd time that they tried using mine and my spouses account. Except this time they were able to successfully get in without us noticing, they made a profile on our Amazon Prime.

Is there anything that can be done about this? Is this illegal; like password sharing, even though we've changed the passwords to everything.

Stepbrothers girlfriend only has her SSN but no physical documents identifying herself. We cant seem to find a way to get any of these documents. Please help!

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 06:03 AM PDT

Hello everyone! So my stepbrother (18m) and his girlfriend (18f) moved in with my husband and suddenly last week. She is from Texas and we are in North Carolina. Her mother was horribly abusive to her and she needed to get out of there asap. Unfortunately she wasn't able to get a hold of her birth certificate and SSN card before leaving because her mother hid those documents from her. I'm helping her get setup here and I'm at a bit of a loss on where to start. Her mother reluctantly gave SL her SSN but still refuses to give SL her actual card or her birth certificate. All she has to prove her identity is her SSN. I've looked up on how to get her SSN card, birth certificate, state ID, health insurance, etc... But they all need either one of those documents to obtain any of the others. This is especially urgent because she needs to be set up with a doctor soon for her mental health medications. Where do we start to get her documents?? Can her mother legally with hold her SSN card and birth certificate??

Neighbor walking dog through front yard

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 10:32 AM PDT

Reddit, I have an elderly neighbor from the next street over (or so I'm told) that consistently walks his dog straight through my yard. He proceeds to let the dog use the bathroom right in front of my front door without cleaning it up. I only started to realize when I put up some security cameras and noticed the dog poop. I have since put up a no trespassing sign, and he still does it. I don't know exactly where he lives, and he does this right after I leave to work. I wouldn't even have a problem if he just picked up after the dog, really frustrating and seems very disrespectful.

What should I do to confront him, since I now have video proof? My directly adjacent neighbor has told me that she has had problems with him before.

    Location is Southern New Mexico.

Got a lease transfer and the place is full of roaches and the tenants left all of their stuff.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 05:57 AM PDT

As said in title, we had our lease transfer approved and as we moved in we realized the place was full of roaches. I mean literally everywhere. I didn't unpack any of my stuff yet. The reason I didn't have look before was because I found this apartment at a short notice and they didn't let us in to have a look because of covid. I haven't signed the lease yet but have given my security deposit. They said that we'd sign the lease once we move in but looking at the apartment I don't want to sign the lease. I asked the building manager why the apartment is in this situation and did she not do an inspection before the tenants moved out? To which she didn't say anything. The place is certainly not liveable. I asked her of she can get us any other unit in the building if possible, to which she said that's not their responsibility. She asked us to find our own place and that they are not accountable for anything. She asked us to take our stuff and move out. What are the legal actions that I can take regarding this situation? Thanks in advance. P.S : I'm living in Nova Scotia, Canada

I applied for an apartment fresh out of college. They denied me but they still held me financial responsible for the apartment.

    Posted: 31 May 2021 09:45 PM PDT

Arizona. I was denied an apartment in 2018 and in order to see if you pretty much qualify for the apartment you had to sign the leasing agreement. So, of course I was denied because I didn't have enough credit and I didn't have any qualifying guarantors. I never moved into the apartments, but they ended up putting an 8,000 dollar credit on my collection.

It's been a hassle trying to get an apartment every since. I was wonder if this was legal or what I could do about this? I don't think it's reasonable to hold me responsible for something I was never provided.

Neighbor wants to build a trench along our fence line on our side of the property and wants us to help pay.

    Posted: 31 May 2021 06:12 PM PDT

Neighbor moved in about a month ago and didn't get inspection completed prior to purchase. They discovered (after the purchase) that a retaining wall on our property line is close to their house and they have concerns that the wall will fail and cause damage to their home. They also feel that our raised bed garden which is placed near the retaining wall is adding weight so they've asked us to move it elsewhere.

They had someone come by and look and proposed digging a trench alongside the fence line (on our property). The trench would be 12" wide by 12" deep and they would place a drainage pipe in the trench then cover it with river rock.

A couple days ago they stopped by and asked if we could help pay for the job and also told me they had a scheduled date for the job (one week out). This did not sit well with me because I never agreed to the job nor did I agree on a date. I called them back and told them they are not to start on the job on the scheduled date and we still needed to work out some things on our side.

Does it sound like we have any obligation to help pay for the job? This job in no way affects us other than the retaining wall being on our property. Also we don't want the trench dug on our property for maintenance/liability reasons. Do they have any clause if water from our property runs into their property? We don't want to move our garden either. We have considered other places and where it's at currently is the only place in our yard where it's out of the way.

What do you recommend r/legaladvice? Please let me know if there is anything I can clarify. Thank you.

Edit: I am in KY Edit again: Foundation drain NOT retaining wall

Landlord taking deposit & charging for damages not agreed upon.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 02:31 PM PDT

Hi, I live in Missouri and recently moved out of an apartment that I was in for three years. I had two cats while there. When we told the landlord we were moving out they never tried to set up a walkthrough. I asked them about this and they said they normally don't do walkthroughs, instead asses damages as they repair. I asked for a walkthrough instead and they agreed. During the walkthrough the landlord took no documentation and I pointed out to what I thought was the damages that might come out of our deposit. She agreed, but wouldn't give me an answer on if that was the final total because they were still going to look over it more when they repaired. Well, they have now told me the whole place needs to be re-carpeted from my pets (I honestly doubt that) and that they will be taking my security deposit and be in touch with the rest of the fees. Is this legal? I was not allowed to be present to discuss the rest of the damages and she refused to give me a straight answer on my walkthrough because "she didn't handle it".

Apartment being leased before we move out

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 10:34 AM PDT

My fiancee and I currently live in an apartment complex where we have had multiple issues within the unit we reside in. About a month ago, we spoke to the complex manager and inquired about moving to a different unit. We were told a unit would be opening up in July that we could move into. My fiancee and I were talking more recently and decided to stay in the unit we are currently living in (the unit with issues). I contacted the management office and was told that our unit, the one we currently live in, has been re-rented by someone else and that they are going to move in in July. I told the management office that we are in no way ready to move at such short notice, and their reply was basically along the lines of "there's nothing we can do the paperwork is already signed". My fiancee and I have not signed any paperwork, our current lease (as it stands when signed) does not expire until August but we are being told we have to move out a month before that. Is there anything that we can do to fight this and stay where we already are living?

[Michigan] Landlord wants to keep my security deposit because I wouldn't sign their version of a 30-day notice, but instead drafted a copy of one of my own.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 06:58 AM PDT

I gave my landlord a 30-day notice, in accordance to Michigan Complied Laws, to let them know that I'll be moving out. I even paid the extra month out of pocket since my 30-day notice overlapped into the next month.

Today, the building manager tells me that the property manager wants to keep my security deposit because I didn't sign their version of a 30-day notice, instead giving them one of my own which was in April.

Does my 30-day notice hold any merit if I have to go to court to get my security deposit back?

Edit: THIS IS A MONTH TO MONTH LEASE

Edit: i should be little more precise... the building manager said my copy of the 30 day notice that I gave them is not valid because its not the version they give their tenants when they are ready to move out. I've paid all of my rent on time, im not anticipating any damages, and all utilities are paid to date.

Landlord hiding packages because I owe a months rent. Is this illegal? [CT US]

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 12:16 PM PDT

I am behind a months rent and he has been known to withhold important letters and packages with other tenants. This is a first for me. I rooted around and found where he hid them. He's sneaky and I know he's going to give me some bullshit answer like "Oh, I put them aside so they wouldn't get stolen" or some such nonsense. This is his not passive aggressive way of trying to gain leverage and to hold them ransom until he gets paid. Which is absolutely going to happen but I am still under the federal corona umbrella. Just a couple of clients are late with their payments.

How illegal is this? Is this theft? According to The federal law covering mail theft is in U.S. Code 18, Section 1708. Essentially it says that stealing, taking, or withholding mail from any type of mail receptacle or mail delivery route is illegal and punishable by a fine and up to five years in prison, or both. But I am not sure if this pertains to Amazon packages.

    Thank you in advance.

What is illegal? This is mainly in reference to Nintendo products.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 02:23 PM PDT

    This is Louisiana, USA.

I'm going to start out by saying I know reproduction games are illegal. I really do not want to make/sell anything illegal.

I have 2 3d printers, 1 resin, 1 pla. I have a label maker and I have a bunch of knowledge related to pcb production.

So what is illegal for me to do? Seriously please help.

Is it illegal for me to sell empty 3d printed Gameboy cartridge shells? What if they don't say NintendoGAMEBOY?

Is it illegal for me to sell cheap replacement labels for game cartridges that have torn up old labels? Would I be able to make it like the originals or what is the line that I can't cross?

Is it illegal for me to sell pcbs that don't have any ROMs on them so it's like a blank pair of cartridge guts that people can use for whatever they want? I was thinking I could sell a GB dumper with it so someone could put any games they want on it for personal use and not commercial, but is that illegal?

I really just want to sell things people can use as replacements and I 100% do not want to sell anything illegal. I enjoy tinkering with retro stuff so much I rather spend all my time making stuff than even playing video games. I do not want to break the law.

    Vehicle damage from tow

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 02:22 PM PDT

Sitting on a friend's couch one night and we hear a loud noise- the neighbor had to have his food truck towed back to his home on a flatbed, and the tow truck driver had run the food truck into the power line, ripping off and destroying the awning. The power line (from transformer to house) was laying on top of the food truck. Despite my protests, the tow truck driver supplied to the owner of the food truck a metal step ladder and a metal pole so that he could manipulate the power line while the tow truck driver attempted to pull forward again. The tow truck driver was clearly in saving-his-own-ass mode.

End result: no electrocutions, tow truck driver dropped the price of the tow, promised to replace awning. Food truck owner went on good faith, and now the driver and tow company are refusing to replace the awning.

There were six witnesses, not including the driver, to all of this and there may also be video. Any advice on the best course of action here?

I am currently mid move from North Augusta SC, to Dallas, TX and have been waiting on my moving company to deliver my things for over a month. I was screwed into signing a contract after putting down a deposit which stated they had 30 business days to deliver my items. It will be 30 business days on Monday June 7th. They will not put anything in an email but every time I call them they tell me my stuff will be loaded out of storage into a truck this upcoming weekend. When I call back on Monday they give me the same story. Now they promised my things were actually on a truck however the truck is broken down.

I had two weeks after my partner of five years died to move everything out of my apartment. I was under a lot of stress and grief in this time and was completely taken advantage of. All I really want are my things to be delivered or the ability to go get them from whatever storage unit they are being held hostage. I am unsure what legal actions I can take.

The Zip code on my lease is different than the actual zip code of my apartment. Could this be an issue?

This was something I just had brought to my attention when trying to set up my internet service. My new landlord is a nice lady who owns many apts, so I don't think this is anything suspicious. Just an error on her part probably, though its weird because shes owned that place for a long time, and had many different tenants, so I'd think she'd have the right address. I only know that cause I actually have lived down the block from this place for 5 years. Anyways I just want to see if there is some weird obscure legal issue that could make this a problem for me. I live in New Orleans, Louisiana btw. Also I know for a fact the zip code on the lease is wrong because I checked with the postal service.

My Grandmother Passed away recently, and the executor of her will closed all her accounts legally and distributed all of her belongings. IRS messed up and is now threatening to seize assets.

After the accounts were cleared for months and everything was done and dusted, the IRS sent a check meant for someone else in the amount of 10k to my deceased grandmother, and the executor returned it via mail months ago. Now the IRS is claiming they never received that check, and is threatening to seize assets. How is this possible, can't they just check the number on the check to see it was never cashed? They actually OWED my grandmother $283 prior to this happening, and now are threatening to freeze accounts in the midst of the executor (my aunt) trying to sell her house. This has been a saga spanning several months, during which my aunt even called the IRS and was told by an employee to do nothing and now she's in the middle of this shit storm. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
