i literally shit myself the first day of my internship

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 04:01 PM PDT

this is a throwaway bc i would die if this got traced back to me, but the title speaks for itself. i started a big 4 internship this past monday and when i woke up that morning i felt like actual garbage. probably because i hadn't eaten very much the day before other than an absurd amount of ice cream (i don't make good decisions). after getting up and going to the bathroom, i felt much better and thought i was in the clear. i get into my finest business casual and sit on my bed (sadly) to start doing my pre-work.

it was about 10 minutes before my first call when i let out what i believe to be an innocent fart. immediately i realize that something is very wrong, and after a few seconds of denial, i accept that i had in fact shit myself. before this day i didn't understand how people shit themselves, "how do they not just hold it in?" i always thought. on monday i learned it's not always that straightforward.

i managed to throw everything in the laundry (rip to my favorite beige dress) and change before my meeting started, but the whole time i just sat there thinking about how all of these innocent people had no idea i shat myself while sitting on my bed just a few minutes before this. what a fucking way to kick off my big 4 experience. so if any of you feel like you had a bad first week of your internship, at least you probably had control of your bodily functions.

i understand if mods delete this, but i just really needed to tell someone that this happened to me and didn't know what sub to post in.

Science Confirms That Mind-Numbing Overtime Sucks

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 08:22 AM PDT

Finally broke the $80K mark (CPA, CA (Canada) - 4 years post designated and working at a small <50 staff firm outside of GTA (2 equity partners).

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 09:00 PM PDT

It feels great to have gotten to 80K (10% raise from my starting salary at my new firm). But now, I feel guilty that I need to justify the wage.

I know I've been underpaid over the years, particularly by my previous firm but at least I'm heading the right direction. I also know that 80K isn't that much given my experience and compared to what people in the GTA/Big 4 or even mid sized firms make but I'm never going to be a Big 4 employee so there's that.

    Alternative careers with accounting degree

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 11:11 AM PDT

Hi everyone! I'm looking to hear about anyone's experience with an accounting degree but work in a less traditional "accounting" job. I'm the senior accounting manager in industry(biotech company). I have my CPA. I recognize I have a good job but.... I'm starting to wonder if there's a better route for me that would make me feel less drained.

My work is doing their "where do you want to be in 5 years" mid year performance reviews and I am evaluating my career path like... I don't wanna climb the corporate ladder.

I love non profits but pay isn't always the best. Considering controller type outsourced services, but no experience in a multi client environment (I was an audit associate for a year before I went to industry).

Just wondering what other options might be out there.

Does anyone work for Marcum LLP?

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 06:56 PM PDT

I have an interview scheduled with Marcum LLP this week, I searched prior posts but haven't really found a lot of info. I'm not seeing a lot on Glassdoor or even LinkedIn for information (salaries, reviews etc.) out of their Bay Area offices. They are I believe the 15th largest firm in the country so I was a little surprised that I'm not finding much. They specialize in serving mid-market companies and perform a lot of the audits for IPOs and SPACs which I think would be a really cool market segment to be involved with.

Anyone have any thoughts on the firm or know what salaries are in the San Francisco / San Jose area (or outside of it)?

Forensic Accounting Market & Salaries in south Florida?

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 03:37 PM PDT

Okay guys excuse my ignorance but, I can't seem to find any hard numbers anywhere. Salaries are literally all over the place when given a search (i.e. glassdoor, payscale, etc.). We all know that Florida is a lower paying state in general, and this goes for all industries, but can anyone chime in on what salaries tend to be for forensic accountants in south Florida (i.e. Miami, Fort Lauderdale, even Tampa)?

When I say "forensic accounting" I'm not talking about strictly fraud investigation. This includes economic damages/loss profits, family law/divorce, valuation, etc. I don't care if you want to make a throwaway to comment or would prefer to say "my friend makes so and so" we just need some type of credible thread to forecast this market for those of us looking to relocate and/or enter the industry in this state.

What would help - if you can specify years of experience, level (i.e. staff, senior, manager, etc.), education (i.e. BS or BS/MS), CPA-holder or not, whether you have Big 4 experience or not, and your forensic accounting niche (i.e. divorce, economic damages, fraud, etc.). I suspect that because all of these variables do exist, this explains why salaries are all over the place when trying to get definitive numbers.

Let's get this party started people! Don't be shy. Please & thank you.

Swamp ass in the office - what are my options?

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 12:49 PM PDT

The transition back into the office has been pretty smooth for me so far except for this one thing. Our firm provides everyone with these very cushiony leather office chairs that for some reason really make my ass sweat. No one else seems to really have this problem. I'm a fairly in-shape guy, but I tend to sweat more than most. After a few hours of sitting in one of those chairs my buttcrack perspiration is visible through my khakis. I'm not really sure what to do. The office isn't abnormally warm or anything, maybe I'm just nervous starting a new job and actually seeing everyone in person? I was a remote new hire last year. I'm thinking about bringing in my own chair with a mesh bottom to get some breeze down there. But that's kind of an awkward conversation of why I brought in my chair that's different from everyone. Maybe I just need to wear pants that don't show sweat quite so much. Maybe I also just need to see a doctor but I don't even know how to bring this up to them either. Thoughts? Tips?

Is Audit a sustainable business model?

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 07:13 PM PDT

With the dumb as business model that PA has and more specifically audit (due to its lower fees) of just exploiting super motivated and smart kids into working crazy hours at grossly underpaid amounts. Do we really think this will continue? I feel like one partner class one day will be left holding the bag...

    Major/minor advice?

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 04:42 PM PDT

    Hello!

I'm an accountant student in my junior year and I just transferred from community college. Accounting is my major but I was wondering if it would be prudent to apply for a minor as well. I have really big goals like being a self-employed CPA and/or going to law school to study tax law. I don't know how realistic any of those are, but I know that my school charges a lump tuition fee per semester, and it's not cheap so I want to get the most bang for my buck! Is it a good idea to minor in something and do extra work + take more classes or is it better to just focus on the core accounting major classes and devote more time to those? Idk if I should take on too much because it's my first semester at this school and I want to take it at least a little easy. Thanks for your help 🙏

Worried I'm not doing enough for CFE studying. Any advice from past writers?

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 11:22 AM PDT

I'm [24f] from Ontario Canada, started full time work in industry in January. I finished a fast track accredited program to bypass PEP last Fall, finished Capstone 1 in March, but due to covid, they cancelled CFE in May, so now I am prepping for September CFE (assurance role).

I am really worried. I have been practicing all I can every week, since mid May, using knotia to read over and write notes on common FR concepts, Tax concepts and working through skill drills on Densmores. I printed out cue cards and try practicing them as much as I can. I am not a fast learner, hence why i'm stressing my technical studying right now, and main concepts (personal tax, auto standby charged, business deductions, GST/HST, common FR audit controls, planning..etc). But there's still alot I still haven't covered such as corporate tax, RDTOH, tax residency, business consolidation,..etc).

I'm trying so hard to get in studying each week, but it gets hard when you work full time, and get tired after work. I try utilizing weekends as much as i'd wish to go outside and enjoy the weather, but i need to study. My parents i don't think realize the scope of this exam how it's 3 days, how much money i've spent on it, and the amount to study. I try hard to use weekends to get good studying in, but they always tell me to clean the house, do the laundry, cook dinner, ....etc and other work that eats into my studying and then nothing is done bc I still want SOME time to just relax for personal time.

I'm so worried about failing and that I'm not doing enough technical prep before Capstone 2 started (July 16). I also don't have the luxury of 8 weeks off like public folks. I have only 5 weeks which i think isn't enough. I'm trying my best but I'm scared it's not enough .

End of rant, i don't know if anyone has advice.

Is it a good idea to get an accounting degree and keep my passion as hobbies instead?

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 06:22 AM PDT

I'm graduating high school in a few months and I have yet to decide on a college major. Many people around me had told me to follow my passion and study what I love, but here's the thing, my passions are the things that do not require a university degree. I have a few things that I like; baking and music. I can learn and do those stuff without a degree. Most of the jobs don't require it either.

So I was thinking of doing an accounting degree, just because I think it's one of the most useful things you can learn, as every industry needs it. I don't like it that much, but I don't hate it either. I do think it's pretty boring though. It's just that I don't have thousands of dollars just lying around to pay for the tuition, so I have to choose really carefully. In my country, those with accounting degrees are much needed and they have tons of job opportunities.

So is it a good idea to pursue accounting as a career, while keeping my other passions as a side hobby? Oh and a quick fun fact; one of my biggest goals in life is to travel the world freely without worrying about finances, so I also take the money and pay into consideration when thinking about majors and jobs.
