Deloitte Interns - Tablets only, no laptops Posted: 08 Jun 2021 01:15 PM PDT Any Deloitte interns out there want to weigh in on your tablets instead of getting a real laptop? I've heard they're terrible and management seems extremely concerned this is another short sighted mistake, what's your opinion? Also did this happen globally or just in the US? Shoes and other workplace attire Posted: 08 Jun 2021 02:05 PM PDT For something completely different, yet tangentially related to working in this industry. I'm in the market for a comfortable pair of shoes to wear to work. I work in government, our office is business casual most of the time, but has a strict no tennis shoe rule (no idea why...) The kicker is I have a pair of standard brown leather dress shoes I got at Costco that are reasonably comfortable, but don't breath at all, which sucks in the southwestern desert, especially since I like going for walks on my breaks/lunch. Anyone have some recommendations for comfy breathable but presentable work shoes? And for the other half of the question, I pretty much buy all my work clothes at Costco, it's cheap, easy, and I don't have to go somewhere I'm not going already, but I'm curious, where do other accountants get their work clothes? What brands do people prefer? Are you a polo or a button up shirt person? I'm a staunch machine washable kind of guy, but is there an argument for getting some dry clean only fancy pants? Lets talk about it! [link] [comments]

Does anyone else struggle with PERT? Posted: 08 Jun 2021 06:30 PM PDT I feel like a high schooler crying over too-tough homework. I don't understand why filling out my practical work experience is so difficult for me. [link] [comments]

accounting internship experience Posted: 08 Jun 2021 10:31 PM PDT This is my 4th week with the company as an intern (for the very first time) and holy mother of balls, this shit is different. This is what Im realizing: - When I am first taught how to do things, I do take notes and some days I forget to take notes. My manager is telling me that I know the overall concepts, its just small things that I need to work on. Somehow those small things apply to every fooking task im working on (but I nailed updating sales tracking, updating cash flow statements, and learning how to analyze raw data so im pretty happy about that). Al - Need to be more thoughtful on emails and more careful. When sending out emails on clearing bad debt, my manager creates a template as to what the email should look like, and I just copy and paste his email into my composition. Also somehow as of yesterday I sent like 4 of the same emails to the same group of people as I was trying to attach the files, I was pretty embarrassed about that considering that I know and have been composing sending emails for years, also felt like punching the screen. Also the same file after I sent the email had a few minor errors again, I sat there like......FOOK MATE. Told my manager that I realized the mistake, went back and made the edit, realized there was another mistake after I sent the updated version, went back and made the edit again but this time I made sure and it actually is error free. Also told him that somehow I was pressing a key that was sending the same email over and over again. - Double checking my work and slowing down on tasks. My manager even pointed it out too. I don't know why it hasn't registered in my brain. He also stated that if he moves to fast that I need to speak up and tell him to slow down. Referencing to the note taking, he shows me more of what he does and most of the time and I don't bring my notebook, but on some days as he is showing me his tasks, he shows me what I have to do, and im like: fooking ey didnt bring me notebook. (ima start taking my notebook everytime to his desk. Even if he tells me I don't have to take a notebook). - I ask a crap ton of questions every. single. day. Even if its something that is super small that I almost can figure out myself, I feel like the whole point of me asking a crap ton of questions is to learn about THEIR process. Idk if asking ALOT of questions is a good thing. Ill let you guys be the judge - Never felt like a total moron ever in my life. yesterday I was sitting there at the printer brain dead as I was tryna figure out how to scan a paper. I WAS SITTING THERE INFRONT OF THE WHOLE STAFF TRYNA FIGURE THIS SHIT OUT. I wanted to ask my manager but thankfully he came to me. - I need to slow down on my tasks. He told me that the goal is not speed as much as accuracy. - As my manager is teaching me what he does on a daily basis, I somehow (most of the time) start getting tired. I guess I have to increase my caffeine intake but luckily my mom ordered me some vitamins. - Overall he thinks im doing well and he did mention that yesterday as we were speaking to the president of (some area of the company). I think that everyday I look down and realize my tits are lost because Im either making teeny weeny mistakes, or im forgetting pieces of the task. Like yesterday my tits were absolutely gone with that email situation / file error. I do believe it will get better down the road as I nailed it with the cash flow statements, sales tracking, etc. I feel like being taught on the tasks the first time is like trying to stay alive during a shitstorm but I feel as though further out in the ocean, Ill be enjoying the nice weather drinking some fresh cold choccy milk. I am going to take each day as a new day. I do feel confident that I will nail all my tasks further down the road. I even feel like the mistakes I visualize that Im typing out arent even major. For new interns, just remember this...... "I feel like being taught on the tasks the first time is like trying to stay alive during a shitstorm but I feel as though further out in the ocean, Ill be enjoying the nice weather drinking some fresh cold choccy milk." - Tittiemashta Feel free to comment below on any suggestions for me and other interns as we are going through are very first internship! Has anyone tried front loading their work? Posted: 08 Jun 2021 08:01 PM PDT After going through my second busy season in Big 4 tax, I've thought about a few things here and there that I could've done during our offseason. These range from rolling forward work papers and memos to getting started on work papers where we receive some of the information a little earlier (currently we just wait until we have everything at year-end). I'm thinking this could save me a few extra hours during busy season as it'll knock off some stuff that I'll inevitably have to do. Any downsides to this? Only thing I could think of is that I would need to make sure I track my time since I won't be able to charge until the code opens up in the new year. As for my schedule, it'll still show that I'm booked for X amount of hours during busy season, so in theory I shouldn't get "extra" work because nobody would know that I have this extra time. Anyone tried this before? How did it work out? [link] [comments]

Red Flag? Job Tasks - First Week In Audit Posted: 08 Jun 2021 05:48 PM PDT Background/ContextFinished BS in Accounting in August 2020, completing a busy season tax internship along the way. Worked at a small firm from October 2020 to April of this year (was laid off with another employee on April 16th) doing a mix of tax and bookkeeping (no audit). I enjoyed and excelled at my audit class in undergrad, and have always wanted to try audit, partly because a friend with experience in it always tells me I'd like it. The SituationI started at a fairly large (top 50) firm this week. Today was the second and final day of training at an out-of-the-office location. Brief overview of the online system used for clients to upload documents as well as a brief introduction to CCH Engagement. Most of it went over my head, particularly in regard to linking Excel trial balances to Engagement. Anyhow, around 3:00 this afternoon I get an instant message from a Senior I've never met, asking if I got his email. It was sent last Thursday, before I had started training and had access to.my email account. The email asks, "could I snag you for a couple of hours next week to make some selections for a prelim?" "Next week" is now "this week." I am genuinely enthusiastic and eager to get started and learn, learn, learn (how adorable I must look to some of you, I know), but I don't even know the audit jargon well enough to know what he means by "make selections" for a "prelim." Uh...help? Is this a red flag for me, or for the firm having hired me? They know I'm new to audit...at least the Talent Management people know that... I replied that I'd be available and happy to work with him, and that I am looking forward to my first day in the office tomorrow. He replied by saying he'd message me "first thing tomorrow" to touch base and start. I do have a "performance coach" assigned to me that I am to meet tomorrow. But, for all I know, I could be assigned work I have no idea how to do before I even know where my cubicle or the bathroom is. Any advice for this n00b would be appreciated. [link] [comments]
Future value question (not homework) Posted: 08 Jun 2021 08:43 PM PDT Say I have two people investing in the same asset. They each pay $1000 dollars for it. 5 years later, each of their assets are worth $2000 dollars. Person A needs to sell his investment immediately because he owes someone money, but plans in investing again right after at the same price (obviously nobody would do that, but its hypothetical). He has to pay 10% capital gains, so he gets 1900$ total and reinvests that at the same growth rate (~14.87%). Fast forward another 5 years, and now Person A has $3800 & person B, who didn't touch his money, has 4000$. They both sell, and have to pay 10% capital gains. Person A pays 10% on 1900$ (190) leaving him ultimately with $3610. Person B pays 10% on $3000 ($300), leaving him with $3700 total. Why is there a 90$ difference? The future value of 100$ (initial capital gains tax was 100$) is 200$. So shouldnt the difference be 100$, bot 90$? I can tell that something isn't connecting but I am confused. If somebody could help/point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it. [link] [comments]

Mid Size firm (Tax) -> Local Government Posted: 08 Jun 2021 02:29 PM PDT Hey y'all, first post, but thought I should just because you all have helped me get through my first couple years in PA. A little bit of background: West coast, MCOL, Local Accounting firm (think 150 employees). Jut finished my second busy season but have known I would be outta here after the first week. I am going from Tax to a revenue auditor for the city in which I live. It is about a 26% raise (I am realizing that i was underpaid) and the premiums for my insurance goes from about $410 a month to $75 a month. I do not have my CPA, but have passed a couple of exams and the city wants me to get it and gives a 5% raise for having it. So I just wanna say if you don't feel like you can leave PA because of experience or lack of a CPA I am a dummy who made it out, and if you want to stay, more power to you. I just realized early on that I had no desire to be a partner so why waste time and potential earnings if a good opportunity came up. [link] [comments] |
