Why do startups want to go back to the office so badly?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 07:09 AM PDT

I'm currently on the job market, and have been interested in going from working at a big company to a startup for a while now. During the interview process with startups, I'm always surprised at how much of a big deal they make about me being able to start work in their office as soon as possible.

When I ask how they feel about permanently remote employees, they usually say absolutely not or kind of laugh at my question. I even interviewed at one startup whose management is very traditional, "butt-in-seat" mentality when it comes to WFH who want us in the office 5 days/week.

WFH would give startups an extremely competitive advantage compared to bigger companies. A newer startup would save so much money and have the financial means to grow if they either had no office or a smaller office. Additionally, they would be able to compete with bigger tech companies in attracting engineers: they might not be able to match salary, but they can provide a comfortable WFH option that some people value more than money.

Can I pitch an idea to my employer and start it as a standalone company if they reject it?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 05:37 PM PDT

As the title states. I'm curious how this goes with NDAs and ownership. If I pitch an idea to my company to start a new service and offer it to existing customers and they reject the idea, Can I take the idea and start my own company with it? Will the employer have legal recourse if my company became successful? I understand that it's unlikely the company would succeed but humor me here.

Is it time to call it quits?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 08:21 AM PDT

Back in January a friend of mine and myself started a solar sales company; this is a company that works alongside a partner who installs and maintains the panels while we simply make the sale. My partner seemed extremely enthusiastic before we even started to the point that I quit my previous job thinking we would both be fully devoted and on board for this.

Recently I've realized that he really doesn't seem on board at all and has just been giving excuse after excuse to either not pay for things or to just not do anything at all.

He's been a good friend of mine for a while (6 years) and I really thought better of him but it's been excuse after excuse as to why we can't move forward; from him having back pain, to his father having Covid, to him needing to get his real estate license, to him breaking up with his girlfriend, to his cousin dying or to our close friends father passing. He hasn't even finished the sunrun training and I had to help him pass our partners training; something which just required a bit of attention and he couldn't do it. And thus far I've been the only one to pay for everything; the LLC, all the leads that we've gotten (which are really expensive in NJ), the company insurance, the website has been me trying to put it together on top of doing side hustles to have money since I quit my job and it's just a bit crippling now to the point that I'm questioning this entire thing and where it's going.

    Advice on GDPR compliance

    Posted: 08 May 2021 02:04 AM PDT

    Hi Guys

The landing page for my startup page just went live(yay!). We are a data labeling platform that is trying to partly automate the process.

The landing page uses Google Analytics for user tracking. It also has a contact us form, which has a checkbox for agreeing to the terms and services. We have also put in our Privacy policy and terms of service pages.

Do I need to worry about GDPR compliance? We are based in India, but our customers are primarily going to be in the US and Japan.

"Review your entire business" - Do we really need that?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 10:01 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I just saw a company offering a service (It's literally like a second set of eyes) - reviewing my entire business to make sure I don't have any bookkeeping issues and hidden financial issues.

Despite the fact that we have some bookkeepers onboard with us. They said our bookkeepers sometimes get distracted and can miss important components, because rarely can they step away from their work and return with a clear mind and fresh eyes to spot those bookkeeping issues.

I saw the list of what are they going to do to review my business, it seems quite comprehensive. But I wonder whether do we really need that kind of service?

Our bookkeepers are doing well and I haven't seen any issues yet. Or that's just my assumption? Or I just couldn't see what is really happening that can really cost me lots of money?

Please I want to hear your thoughts.

    Thank you in advance!

How do you come up with memorable names for a startup? Would you rather make up a cool word or use an existing one?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 01:47 PM PDT

I realise it all depends on the industry and doesn't always necessarily have to be industry related. Example, Honey extension which indirectly implies what they do but a person who has never heard about them wouldn't know what the company is about.

So how do you approach the dilemma of naming startups?

Mixup some related words like InstaCart or come up with someth your own?

    Initial Traction Problems

    Posted: 07 May 2021 02:28 PM PDT

Our product is a SaaS that solves a problem in information security and security compliance. My co-founder and I are technical.

We have tried hard on sales and business development. We have been incredibly close to signing deals with large enterprise customers, but have fallen short.

We have the head of Product Management at a competitor screaming internally that the competitor should acquire us. Met with the CEO, CEO likes the product/company but wants us to show traction in the market.

Neither co-founder has sales experience and, for those that do, you understand enterprise sales can be hard and takes a long time.

With no funding other than a one time grant, what are your suggestions? My thought is we need to invest in finding a sales-oriented cofounder. If you disagree, please say why. If you agree, can you offer opinions on how to find the right candidate given we don't have a background in hiring sales persons?

    TIA!

Is filing a trademark the same as a DBA (trade name) in WI?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 07:02 AM PDT

I want to operate under a different name to the LLC.

Everything I read online points to this. (link is to the State of Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions) But I just want to be sure before I file it.

It just seems odd that you file a trademark for a simple doing business as. But is that what has to be done in Wisconsin?

EDIT: If someone Googles this in the future, here is the solution.

I just got off the phone with wdfi trademarks section. The Trademark and Tradename systems were merged under one filing form.

To register your DBA or Trading name create an account and log into https://dccs.wdfi.org/ then go to the trademark filing dropdown. Choose register then fill in all your details.

Under the section "Trademark Description" where it says " Name or phrase to be registered OR detailed description of image or logo (See instructions for details):*" your put the name your want to operate your Business as. Then you can skip the upload mark section as if you want to trademark a logo etc it has to be done separately. Its all pretty self explanatory from here, finish the form, print it and get it notarized, come back and upload it and pay the fee. Then you are all done.

I called this number (608) 266-8915 if you want to confirm.

Does mindset affect your business results?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 10:07 AM PDT

    Hi,

I know there are a lot of entrepreneurs in here and it can be challenging to be one. I am curious about how you started and most specifically the mental challenges you had (if any). I have heard others talking about mindset shifts they had to go through to succeed. Have you ever experienced any issues or setbacks with that? If so, what helped you to change that? And maybe you still sometimes have to deal with it?

Can I refer to someone I give 3% equity to as a co-founder?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 10:03 AM PDT

Does a business partner have to have a certain amount of equity to be considered a co-founder? Or does it more have to do with the stage at which they join the company and their role.

I started my company three years ago and own 100% of it. I have two collaborators who I've been working with for a year or so, and I want to give equity to them and bring them on as co-founders, but I don't want to give up huge chunks of the company. They are awesome and completely on board with my company, products and mission and we work together very well. So, I want them to be part of the company but they're coming on a few years after I started the brand even though the brand is in it's early stages still. Can I refer to them as co-founders? It would really help the optics of the company.

    Compensating pre-seed Investors... What's fair?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 01:33 AM PDT

Hi all, I'm starting to make headway on my MVP and have had numerous generous offers to help with funding the development through friends and family. What's the best way to compensate them bearing in mind I have no market valuation, I need the funding to get this off the ground and will be exploring seed investment once the MVP is validated?

Who is starting startups these days?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 05:21 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I am looking for the following info about who is starting startups:

    • Age
    • Education
    • Income
    • Work experience
    • Gender

On google I only find many different articles on the same topic on the first 5 pages: most successful founders are 45 years old.

Does anyone know a good source for such data?

    That would be great!

Consumer facing websites - how do you keep a constant stream of users?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 10:07 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm thinking about building a consumer based app and I wonder how do you build a constant stream of users?

Ad based websites require hundreds of thousands of visitors every month to be a valid business. Even if you have have a super successful launch, traffic will die down eventually. It seems extremely hard to build a constant stream of users.

The only tactic I can think off is SEO. Obviously users constantly searching, so ranking high will provide that. But I can't imagine ranking high for keywords like "photo editor" or 'salary data".

    Are there any other tactics?

How do you manage the daily and weekly alignment calls with your team?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 02:14 AM PDT

We are a tech startup of about 15 people and we all work remotely. At the moment we have a daily standup with the development team every day, a planning call with the whole team on Monday morning and a review call with the whole team on Friday afternoon.

I have the feeling that there are better ways to organize alignments with the team, one main problem is that these calls often become "internal conflict generators", especially between Development and Marketing / Sales.

How do you manage alignments with your team? Do you split the calls by departments or do you bring all the stakeholders? Who attends the meetings, how long do they last, and what topics do you discuss?

Looking for recommendations on form software that fills out a templated report with conditional logic

    Posted: 07 May 2021 06:38 AM PDT

Is there any form/survey software that lets me apply conditional logic to a user's answers to a survey, and fill in information in a templated report?

For example, if a user answers question 1 as "no" then the system fills in a recommendation in the report based on that. If they say yes to question 1, but no to question 2, then a different recommendation would be inserted

Built an MVP, but I think it's more suitable for international markets, how do I acquire users in such a case ?

    Posted: 06 May 2021 10:14 PM PDT

I've built a payment gateway for merchants to accept cryptocurrencies on their site.

I stay in a place where crypto for payments isnt legal yet & I wanna acquire users from other countries where there are no such restrictions. How do I go about marketing the product?

How and where to store sensitive data

    Posted: 07 May 2021 12:00 AM PDT

I'm planning to start a side project that hopefully will become a real business. The product will require users to upload documents such as ID cards, passports, old work contracts and bills.

As first step I was planning to upload the files on gdrive and it should be fine until the platform grows... Or not? Any suggestions?
