Is now a good time to bring up a promotion?

    Hey all!

About a year ago I joined 3 investors and we started a gin distillery. I'm the only employee and we launched in Nov last year. Since then, we've been making a light, steady revenue stream which is fine since we're happy to have something coming in while settle in, open our distillery door and launch a couple more products.

I've been working alongside one of the other directors the most who has been committing their time on top of their investment (a passion project of theirs). The others are less active in the business. When I signed on, I committed a small investment to be on the board and accepted what I would say to be a low-medium wage for my position - I was happy for this as it was the same I was earning previously but also a great opportunity to try something new, learn a lot and be in it from the start. My wage is enough to get by but not enough to set myself up long-term.

The director I've been working alongside has been guiding the decision-making for most of the business, but I have been the driving force and leg work for almost all aspects of it up until now. We all knew going into this that we won't be making our money back for a little while at least - I think once we reach that point, it might be a good time to ask for more money? I might ask to roll this into a new position within the business that oversees the entire operations (GM for example). I know the board has been quite happy with the performance of the business (my performance) so far.

Is it in good taste to write a character reference letter for people you want to help get jobs without being asked? I have 2 people I like and work with that are graduating and I want to do something for them.

Is it rude to do this without being asked or is it cool?
