Should I take over my Dad’s company? Posted: 03 Feb 2021 01:23 PM PST Hey looking for some advice here. One year ago, I was just finishing up my first semester of optometry school. Unfortunately I failed a class and was given the option to repeat with next years class or to withdraw. I chose to walk away. Covid hit and I hate an extremely difficult time finding employment. In October 2020 I finally got a job in sales at a cybersecurity start-up. Can confidently say I don't love it. My Dad has an optometry practice here. He is not your traditional optometrist. He gets government contracts to do On-site eye exams with mobile equipment. Over the past 20 years he has grown this business and now has about 70 sub contractors doing eye exams and providing glasses to inmates in correctional facilities. He is now asking me if I'm still interested in being involved with the business and eventually taking it over, or if he has the green light to sell the company. On one hand, being my boss has always been my dream. Having the opportunity to grow what he has built genuinely excites me. Since failing optometry school, my self confidence has taken a hit and I doubt my ability at times. People have always described me as personable, someone very easy to get along with, and smart. I think I have what it takes to learn the company inside and out and make my father proud, just a bit unsure. What would you do in my place? Thank you in advance!! [link] [comments] |
Vendors and sales people that click on your Google ads to call you should reimburse you Posted: 03 Feb 2021 02:10 PM PST I help a few friends with their marketing and have noticed that vendors and sales people will click on their ads to get to their websites and/or to call them. If the ads had a $3 cpc, I might not care, but some of their industries are INCREDIBLY competitive with cpc between $150-300. When it happens 5 or 10 times a month, that quickly eats up a lot of marketing budget and really pisses me off as a business owner. That's just plain laziness and a disregard for the business owner they're calling. I'm inclined to reach out to them, ask for their managers and let them know that their rep cost us $189 for his/her cold call...and probably doing the same for all the other people being called. I'm so annoyed looking at the total amount those idiots cost us last month. [link] [comments] |

Creating a FB small business page Posted: 04 Feb 2021 03:23 AM PST I know this may sound like a self promotion but this is anything but that. I've posted on here asking for feedback and tips on creating a small business here in NWT Canada. I've asked if my idea were any good and so far I've received positive feedback and tips on what should I do and such. My ideas were running a gym (CrossFit or personal one on one) or being a Motivational Speaker. I've named it "A Warrior Mentality" (a bit corny IMO) it's unpublished so no one can look at it unless I add them to it. It's a fitness\motivational page. Where people can post their workout regiments, give out tips or advice. I can do the same obviously. Also it's a motivational page. Where I or whomever wants to follow this page can say or post anything motivational. I would like to make some revenue but I personally think it's too early. Since I come from a small community in NWT and I'm planning on helping my people in this way. I've served in the Canadian Armed Forces for just over 3yrs. So I plan on posting either CrossFit or Military related workouts and motivating "bootcamps" or "basic training". So what I'm looking for is feedback. Should I pursue this as I have little experience in this? And if you guys are interested in this as I am. I maybe able to add you if you were to PM me. I know it sounds weird and crazy to ask that but what\whom I'm looking for is people who are experienced in motivating, working out, and who are small business owners. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
I Have many ideas to help businesses make money but no one is listening Posted: 03 Feb 2021 07:57 PM PST I am a digital marketer and it had been hard for me to find clients for my agency for a while now especially because they use my age against me, claiming I'm too young to handle their business. I know many ways to get customers for businesses but they never actually listen to me much. How should I deal with this? [link] [comments] |
When should I register for a LLC? Posted: 03 Feb 2021 06:08 AM PST Hi there! I have been doing wedding photography on the side for about 5 years now. I do an average of about 5 weddings a year. I have decided that I want to do it full time because that is what I really love (not my shitty 9-5 job). When should I register for a LLC? I have booked about 7 weddings for this year. Is now a good time to do that? Or should I just stay as sole proprietor? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Should I switch from A Sole Proprietor to an LLC ? Posted: 03 Feb 2021 09:05 PM PST Hello, this is my 1st year doing taxes as I just turned 18 a few months back. I have registered my business as a sole proprietorship under a trade name. This year my gross revenue was just over $125k, and I don't know if creating a sole proprietorship was a smart decision over a LLC. Could anyone give me a better insight to what you think and suggestions if possible? also any tips about lowering taxes or anything in general as it's my first year? Thanks any help is appreciated [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Feb 2021 04:07 AM PST Before anyone tells me that compassion is needed during this time of COVID-19 since business is slow, yes, I am very much aware. For context, I am a small business owner relying on a commercial building up for lease and a small pharmacy for income. The lessee in question, a couple, is renting a commercial space in my building for a certain convenience store franchise and owns several other businesses: a restaurant, a gas station, and are private-practicing doctors. They are much wealthier than I am. Last June, the lessee sent in a request (via the franchise's company email) for a rental fee discount up until the end of the year 2020. I agreed because I knew that business was slow due to COVID-19. However, it was my understanding that this discounted setup would be terminated come 2021 as agreed upon, and they would resume regular payment, the amount which was stipulated in our 10-year lease contract. Today, they just sent in 12 cheques good for the entire year, still with the 10% discounted rental fee amount. I had not even sent a notice or letter to collect their dues, they just went ahead and paid the discounted amount even though we only agreed on a six-month setup. How should I approach this situation? Compromise, or ask them to pay the full amount? Neither of my businesses are doing well at the moment, and if I'm being honest, my current income is pretty much negative. tl;dr Lessee and I agreed on a discounted setup good for 6 months ONLY. But they went ahead and paid for their entire rental fee for 2021, still at a discounted price. I need the full rental payment if possible because my income is reliant on my two small businesses which aren't doing well due to COVID-19, lessee is a private-practicing doctor couple who own a restaurant and gas station. How do you test business ideas for the market? Posted: 03 Feb 2021 04:46 PM PST I always see that majority of small businesses fall into the trap of advertising to their friends, family, and co-workers only. How do you test business ideas for the market? Do you use ads? Small focus groups? [link] [comments] |

New Business Sale Tax Question/Clarification Posted: 04 Feb 2021 03:48 AM PST So I am starting a new [E-commerce business](instagram.com/workharderapprel) for gym clothing. I am based out of NY and registered the brand as an L.L.C. I have been looking into the rules and regulations around sales tax, and what I've come to understand is that since I am a small business (no sales yet, launching in 2 weeks) and I do not meet the nexus requirements for most states, I would only need to charge sales tax in NY and remit it to the state, correct? I have a tax consult next week, and also will be reaching out to some of my business professors (health science student, minor in business) to see if they can point me in the right direction! Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Feb 2021 11:17 PM PST Hi, I'm from Pakistan and i owned an apparel brand here. Before Covid, i was very close to breaking through the struggling phase of businesses, i manufactured products worth over $100K just to cater the customers for 2 months and took major personal loans (as loans from banks are really expensive and difficult to get here), my production was in last phases when Covid struck and it all came crashing down so fast, when I received the production (it was around late june i think), i was heads over heels in loans, vendors were putting pressure, there was a pressure of salaries n all and so i had to sold out the stock in wholesale and below costs just to reduce the pressure and my loans were mounting up to $30k with delays and rentals and salaries adding up. Fast forward, with much struggle and a through a very depressive phase , i managed to pay back most of the loans , cut down team, and had to sold out my business to cover my costs for which i worked for over 5 years day and night (which were adding up), now i have a very small capital left and still about $12k worth of debt which I cannot pay without starting a business or by doing a job so i have started another athleticwear apparel brand which has completed the designing phase and is now in production. Every passing day is depleting my cash reserves faster and i won't be able to survive till end of march at this pace so i wanted help and advise from you guys. If you guys know anyone who's already working in athleticwear and needs someone to manage their production and/or designing for them please do connect them with me i can cut down their costs significantly without compromising on quality. Also if you have any advise i would really appreciate, and to anyone reading who also had to go through similar phase , please hold on. Have a great day everyone. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Feb 2021 02:05 AM PST If I charge customers for postage, is that something i can still claim as an expense? Or not, because the customer is picking up that expense technically? Would it be any different if I included postage in the price? [link] [comments] |

Can I have independent contractors scan their signed on boarding documents? Posted: 04 Feb 2021 01:23 AM PST My company is headquartered in one state, but I'm hiring contractors in another state for a marketing gig I have lined up. What is the allowed method of having them sign their initial paperwork? Driving 400 miles really isn't an option. Certified mail is doable, but costly and annoying. I'd rather not have to subscribe to a service like Docusign. What would be ideal is if I can email them the documents and then they sign them, scan them, then email them back to me. Would that be a legal way to do it? [link] [comments] |

In need of crm software that can print terms and conditions Posted: 03 Feb 2021 05:58 PM PST Hello everyone. Originally I made this post in r/startups with no luck, so alas I am trying again. I think my post was too rambly haha. I'm working on a startup for a mobile consumer electronics repair business. I am based in the US. What I'm hoping to do is have everyone sign a terms and conditions contract prior to starting the repair and when I finish a repair. This would be fantastic if I could use CRM software in conjunction with the receipt printing as then it would be easier to print the customer information on the terms & conditions, along with some areas with checkboxes so I can individually mark that I tested certain components on a electronics device, such as that it powers on, LCD works, volume button works, speakers, etc. As far as CRM functionality goes, I just need to record customer contact information, how they heard about us, and have ongoing notes about devices that we will work on. I will need to be able to search these customers on the fly as well if I have a return customer to review their note history. Ideally, I will also like to be able to go a step further not just search for customers, but other searches such as if I type in Xbox, it will search all Xbox repairs in the database, however the customer search is the biggest priority at this time. Lastly, I am a small company, it's just me, the one and only employee, so I'm hoping I can cut costs by using a single user CRM software and upgrading down the line for more users and perhaps functionality. Open to suggestions. Thank you everyone! [link] [comments] |
How to approach Architects and Interiors for business? Posted: 03 Feb 2021 11:39 PM PST So I run a small Sanitations and Lifestyle Distributorship. I was wondering how some of you might approach Architects and Interiors and their firms so that we can do business with each other. Stuff like what they would like to hear, why our firm and how do I get them to choose us over other distributors. [link] [comments] |
What can I do to bring in money? Posted: 03 Feb 2021 04:56 AM PST Hello, I'm a small business owner and I started through bootstrapping all my savings into current business. I've not been lucky getting an investor. I don't have any friends and family at 27 because I've had to stay away to avoid being honor killed. Left home at 18 when my parents decided to marry me off to a man in his 40s, and I've had to fend for myself ever since. It's tough out here, and especially for me, because no one wants to see that I have a contingency plan for my business and a loan. They just assume my immediate family should be able to support me with the loan I need. Anyway, I'm stuck making little profits that goes directly into paying for my upkeep and paying a part time staff. It's killing me because I have great ideas that I cannot implement to grow due to financial constraints. So asides the little money I make to keep afloat, who has any ideas on ways I can grow this business? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Feb 2021 11:24 PM PST Hello everyone, I feel like i'm in a tight spot at the moment and I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but I figured someone here could at least hopefully point me in the right direction. So here's my problem: I trying to start an after school program that's basically a computer/STEM crash course. I have volunteered to teach this class before to see how it would go and it went great, but now I'd like to start looking to get paid for my work at some point. Originally, I filed for as a small business and was working with juvenile halls, but they didn't like that and said I should be an LLC. Fast forward to being an LLC and they decide they just up and don't want to pay me for about 6 years. I decide to move back to my original plan of working with schools, but then COVID hit and we all know how that goes. So now that the vaccine is rolling out, I have started contacting the schools again and they say I have to be a nonprofit organization. To my understanding, I have to find funding for them and then I don't get paid? So my question is do nonprofit owners not make money? Will I have to abandon my after school program idea since I can't get paid? [link] [comments] |

Building networks between contractors Posted: 03 Feb 2021 11:00 PM PST Hello all, I have own a small scale demolition company in Southern California for a little over a year and have had trouble finding more work and valuable leads. We have been fortunate to be profitable, but hope to take a great leap in 2021. There are many contractors who have networks that often seem impenetrable. What advice would you give a that has worked for you while growing your businesses? Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |
