Please help me save my 70 year old family business

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 09:59 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas to help. I'm 32 years old and have no business experience and I'm now being tasked with helping my older family members (who in my opinion have zero business sense) save our family business.

Here's the situation: In the early 1950's, my grandfather bought some property near a hospital. He turned one building into a very small convenience store and the other 3 into ~20 motel rooms and kitchenettes.

Throughout the years, poor decision-making and a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mindset have left everything sloppily maintained. The convenience store still looks like it's living in 1983 and the rooms are still rented out via phone calls from patrons who find us in the yellow pages. My aunts and uncles still take reservations on paper cards and slide them into racks with the room numbers like this.

Years of only attracting elderly patrons to the motel and ignoring upkeep on the convenience store have given us a bad reputation and lowered our customer base. With COVID-19, we have taken even more of hit. The store used to stay open from 8 AM to 8 PM every day and now we're only open until 5 PM on weekdays and not at all on weekends. The rooms are constantly half empty which is ridiculous considering we're super close to one of the world's busiest hospitals and blocks away from a massive clinic system.

My state recently was giving out $25,000 to small businesses in need but my old school family hasn't been doing things by the books and would not even been able to show a valid employee to the state government (my uncle is the only "employee" and I believe he just takes money from the cash register as his pay) to apply so we weren't able to apply. Just this year, my mother, aunts and uncles all had to reach into their own pockets to help pay the taxes on the business as the business account didn't have enough to pay them.

    We are dying.

My family loves this business and really want to do everything I can to turn it around but we're not even sure where to even begin. A few of my family members are older and it is very hard for them to agree to new things as they're terrified of change but I feel they may be at their breaking point so I think now is the time for the rest of us to push.

I want to put our rooms on AirBnB and establish more of an online presence. I also believe we need to gut the convenience store, paint and completely remodel it and (if necessary) convert it into a better business idea. If it's the best idea, I'd love to keep it a convenience store for hospital employees, patients and patrons staying in our rooms. We also have multiple other massive hotel chains around us and having convenience items and toiletries near is very beneficial for them in my opinion. I think rebranding will also help us as again, our reputation isn't great. I believe I have a lot of great ideas but I want to be successful and without any business experience, I fear making mistakes and making our situation worse.

Does anyone have any advice to make the most of this situation? Any suggestions are welcome and thank you in advance.

Finally hit over 1% Conversion rate in a full month

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 03:22 AM PST

Since I started my shop in Sep 2019 its been a grind, It actually started picking up pretty decent in January 2020 and in to February but then Covid it and I noticed it changing. Since I went from Printful to learning screen-printing myself, and controlling the quality and shipping times Ive noticed a huge increase in interest. I still don't sell enough to make it a full time thing but I enjoy the learning process and getting to know my customers, and I see a lot of them returning which is awesome and since I also increased the quality of the art, it really took off last month. Last year I was sitting at 0.4 - 0.5 in conversion rate but in January at one point I was as high as 1.9%, ended up at 1.44% for the entire January.

    The grind is real.

    help!: name my handywoman business

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 01:54 PM PST

I've got plenty of tools and skills and i'd like to start providing minor home repair services to my community. However, I'm having trouble naming my new business. Give me your best name for a local one woman handywoman service. Unique and creative submissions very welcome!

While safety is a small concern, it is important to me advertise my gender up front. Stats say more than 70% of all home repair and renovation projects are initiated by the woman of the house. I'm excited about the idea of female empowerment and visibility in this male dominated industry.

    any crosspost suggestions also welcome

First Time Firing Someone - I need some pointers

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 08:35 AM PST

This person is very sensitive and sweet. She definitely has been excited to be a part of the team but she just doesn't have the sense of urgency required and the team is consistently having to do extra to pull her weight. I've been avoiding letting her go for some time now, giving her various "easier" tasks and trying to find a place to utilize her. Her manager has been trying to work with her to no avail and we've decided it's time to let her go.

I want to be very gentle and encouraging but I really don't know how to handle this. She's definitely going to cry and I'm an empathetic cryer...oh boy. I also feel terrible about it because these are tough times and jobs are scarce. Y'all got any thoughts, words of wisdom and/or experiences that might help me feel empowered to do this and do it well?

Also, she does not have a scheduled shift this week. Do I call her in to talk? Or schedule her for a shift and then drop the bomb?

    Moving on from Etsy

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 06:02 AM PST

Hello all, I have a small Etsy shop for a few handmade wood products. I don't sell much of anything at the moment as I feel my items get buried by the bigger companies. Has anyone had more success creating their own website and moving on from Etsy? Or being that my business is so small I'd benefit more from being on a site like Etsy? Any insight is appreciated

Is it worth the hassle to change a DBA into your official, registered business name?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 06:39 AM PST

Now that my business is profitable, I'm tossing around the idea of doing some legal "cleanup", if it's even worth doing. Let me describe the situation so you guys can give me your thoughts.

On day 1, when I didn't know if the biz would succeed, I registered it with my state under name X.

Two years later, I saw that it was failing but I could pivot and see if that would fix it. I filed a DBA Y that would match the refined market focus.

One year after that, it was taking off so I knew my new focus was good. However, late in the year someone contacted me to say that I was infringing on his name. After a little research and consulting with a trademark attorney, I changed my biz name again. I changed the name and logo on all my marketing materials and filed another DBA for Z.

So today, I'm still legally registered as X, with two DBA's Y and Z. The new Z name is still working very well in terms of marketing so I want to keep it and maybe trademark it. But first, I am wondering if I should drop the two DBAs and re-register (or change my state registration) to the Z name. I'd also have to change the name on my bank account and sales tax registrations. I've already notified most of my vendors and have been working with them under the Z name.

Have any of you gone through this? Is it worth the hassle?

Owner's Draw. How to do it?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 06:22 AM PST

Hey there, I was wondering if there are requirements for a Single Member LLC to make an owner's draw. I would like to make one bi-monthly and on a quarterly basis.

Are there requirements to this? Should I cut myself a check? Is an ACH/wire payment from my business bank account to my personal bank account sufficient?

Opened my restaurant this year during the pandemic... how are we falling through the cracks?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 05:10 AM PST

Opened my business in June. For a little restaurant started by a waitress who saved for years- we are absolutely doing fantastic for a first year business- BUT-

It's still a first year business, a restaurant, during a pandemic.

Because I don't have prior year tax returns for the business? No SBA. Because I wasn't in operation in February? No ppp.

Despite showing sales in the green in my first year of business, despite making literally zero dollars myself- I'm living in abject poverty so my employees can stay paid and the lights stay on.

Why are we totally forgotten? Why do we receive no help? Why has the United States and the American dream basically disintegrated in front of our eyes?

I pulled myself up by my bootstraps, that's what I'm hearing we're supposed to do- but essentially I'm watching my life savings and sanity spiral downward while our government pays massive corporations bailout money they don't need.

The weight of the world is on my shoulders. How are you guys doing? Any angel investors out there want to help an amazing business out in their first year? (I kid.. not looking for a handout)

I'm proud that we're doing well with the support of our community- I'm glad we have a great business model- and in any other year I'd have no doubt we'll make it-

But this is an uphill battle with a 1000 lb backpack on and I'm losing hope and faith.

Anyone have any uplifting words or advice? I don't know how much longer I can make a hundred bucks a month (personally) while working 80 hour weeks.

Go wild with your criticisms, would rather hear the ugly truth than a beautiful lie. If my whole store is s—t, then say it but please give feedback as to why so I can improve upon it. Thanks 🙏 my store

How do you assess whether your business has viability?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 02:44 AM PST

How do you assess whether your business has viability? What metrics do you use to assess viability? I'll explain my business below and can you suggest how I assess its viability and give your opinion on whether to throw in the towel?

    ---

I've built my own WordPress plugin. It's been about 7 months and I need to assess whether to continue working on it or just stop and move onto other potential businesses.

    Current metrics:

    Business Started 18th June 2020
    Sales to date 6
    Plugin reviews 0
    Annual upkeep cost $400
Total spent on business to date $2400 ($2000 blog article campaign)
    Free Plugin downloads 2073
    Active Plugin Installations ~50
Sales Model Freemium - a free slimmed down version of plugin is offered for free, users can purchase/upgrade to a Pro version of the plugin
Sale refunds 2 customers requested refunds because they didn't like the plugin
Marketing Paid to have the plugin featured on 4 different blog articles ("Top 5 plugins for XYZ").
Promotions - 3 day activation promotion: when users activate the free plugin they see the 'nag' "Get 10% off when you upgrade to pro. Offer only lasts 3 days."
    - 15% off promotion: 5 days after users activate the plugin they see a new nag offering 15% off when they upgrade to pro
    - Landing page popup: 5 seconds after users visit the webstore landing page they see a popup "Special promotion: use the promo code XYZ and get 10% off"
User feedback When users deactivate the plugin I survey them on why they are deactivating. Below are the survey results:
    Deactivation Reason No. of Responses
    No reason given 163
    Other 126
    It's a temporary deactivation 78
I no longer need the plugin 62
I have found a better alternative plugin 61
I couldn't get the plugin to work 53
General feedback trends Common feedback is; plugin is hard to use, plugin has bugs.
Business long term goals - Have 10 sales a week (~500 sales/year), Only devote ~5 hours a week to business (including development, support and marketing).
Business upkeep per week 20 hours a week of my time (predominantly devoted to adding new features, improving existing features and bug fixing, hardly any time spent on marketing, sales or support).

    Help with a brand name

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 08:58 PM PST

Hello, I'm a Brazilian fashion designer and I've been wanting to start my own brand for a few years but due to anxiety, fears and doubts I never managed to finish. But this year I NEED to finish and put it into practice. I have a huge obstacle: I CANNOT FIND A SUITABLE NAME. I always find defects in words; I want the perfect name (which may not exist). All the names I really like are already in use, whether in Brazil or abroad. Obviously it needs to be a name that is relatively free around the world and totally free in my country. I would very much like the help of you users who speak the most varied languages; after HUNDREDS of possibilities noted over the past few years, I have come to a smaller selection and would like to know the possible connotations, bad meanings and pronunciation problems that these words can have in your country.

For those interested, the brand is for young adults; it is modern but not fun; I would say contemporary minimal, without being boring and vague; strong influence of Brazil's climate, lightness and the like; but with a touch of melancholy and urbanity. I don't like to say that, but you can use Bottega Veneta by Daniel Lee as a reference; Also the timeless elegance of The row (in a more accessible and real version) and the contemporary and utilitarian twist of Marine Serre. It will start as a masculine brand and gradually I will introduce feminine and genderless pieces.

I want a neutral name or one that is slightly provocative, nothing funny or ambiguous; Nor does it need to be entirely traditional. I would say a middle ground.

    So if any of those words have a bad meaning or connotation in your language please let me know; if by chance some of them allude to something bad either in writing or in pronunciation, I would also like to know;

I have other options in mind, but the ones I would like to know the possible connotations are these:

    -VORATTO: something related to greed; (Is the fact that it contains "RAT" in the middle of the word a problem? In Brazilian pronunciation it is not; "rat" here is "rat", very close; here it would not be a problem because the pronunciation changes a lot between the two words; "rat" and "voratto";

-VERATO / VERATTO: Something related to veracity

    -TENATTO: something related to tenacity, solidity;

    -VOLLEN: made up word

I accept suggestions too, haha. Thank you in advance!

    Some advice about pricing

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 08:04 PM PST

So I'm planning on starting a bit of a side gig and what I'll do is take 360 pictures for businesses that could potentially benefit off of it. Its no professional shot, but I would sit down with my client, look at what images they currently have, and see where they could benefit most from one. After the picture is taken, I can edit it to their liking on my phone and send it to them

My question here is this: what would you guys pay for such an image and process? I know this question may vary, but as a general rule of thumb, I would price things like so: $13/photo in a 1 shot package, $10/photo in a 3 shot package ($9 value above single shot package) package, and $7/photo in a 6 shot package ($36 value above single shot)

Let me know what you guys would think about something like this and if it would need to change up at all

    Dad need help with sales!

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 04:08 PM PST

My dad started a small photography business. It is just a website right now where he sells his photography. For now its just nature things and he has tons of pictures up, eventually he is planning on getting into portraits and stuff. He gives you an option of getting it printed on paper, medal, or canvas on any size you choose. He also has a facebook account for his business, and a blog up on the website. He put out targeted ads on multiple social media platforms.

The problem isnt that he isnt getting any traffic on his site, tons of people are looking at it, but noone is buying anything. He just slashed his prices, which werent bad to begin with. And he does coupon codes sometimes.

He asked me at dinner the other night what he can do to help his business. I suggested setting up an instagram but after that I drew a blank. In the future he is going to get into craft shows and whatnot but with covid, and winter thats hard right now.

My question to you is what else can we do? I want to help him out but I am at a loss with what else he can do. I understand photography is a hard thing to get into as far as selling for multiple reasons but is he doing everything right? What have we not thought of? Any advice that I can pass onto him is appreciated. Thanks!!

    Which car for me?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 05:42 PM PST

I have a business and attend different events around the community. I need a new car soon because mine is getting old and has a lot of miles. I don't want a truck, because the items that I sell need to be stored inside. I also need to bring a tent, tables, items, storage racks, etc to each event. What is a good car that will work well for my business as well as a personal vehicle? My business is full time, so I attend Atleast one market per week so getting a small car and renting a larger one when I have an event is just not feasible.

I am thinking a crossover or minivan, but I don't need the passenger space of a minivan but I do hear that they are easier to unload and have more cargo capacity than a SUV/crossover. How much storage space do I have with a crossover (thinking RAV4/Rogue) with all the seats down? Is it easy to unload or do the narrow doors make it more difficult? Would the van (Sienna/odyssey) be more practical for transporting a lot of items on a regular basis and easier to load/unload with the wider trunk and sliding doors? I'm not worried about price of either the minivan or crossover, either are reasonably priced and would last a long time, so I'm more concerned with what is more convenient for my needs right now.
