Sales side hustles? Sales and Selling

    Sales side hustles?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 06:19 AM PST

I work in SaaS tech sales, mostly for early stage companies.

Has anyone figured out how to leverage those skills into a side-hustles that's worth the time? If so, I'm curious and would love to hear about it.

    Outbound Attitude

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 06:06 AM PST

I see posts on here pretty regularly complaining about the usual topics.. shitty (or no) leads, grumpy prospects, annoying managers, unrealistic budgets, stress levels, deals falling through, etc.

We all know those are the things that suck about sales. Maybe the people posting those things are doing it to vent here, where people understand. I wanted to still chime in and add a little tip:

You have to find a way to not let that attitude bleed into your interactions with your prospects, peers, and management.

We live in a culture that glorifies negativity. It's more common to hear a negative response from people, even if it may be meant ironically, than a positive one. In sales, we frequently talk about breaking prospects out of their normal thought pattern. I have found the easiest way is just to be positive. This also goes for your peers, don't be a member of that group that's bitching about territories not being fair, not getting enough leads, etc. You never know who's listening, and people notice a positive attitude first.

For me the key to positivity is ownership. I own my problems, I'd rather not make excuses for them. As long as you keep working toward solutions, you WILL get there. The minute however that you give up and blame your problems on some outside circumstance, you're headed downhill and it's more important then than ever to fix it.

This forum has been a huge help to me throughout my career. I hope this contribution helps even just a couple of you see things in a different light.

Tired of Not Having Job Security and Cold Calling

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 06:26 PM PST

The anxiety is too much. I've bitten off all my fucking nails to where they're red inflamed sore and partially bleeding. Everyday I wake up and go into the office I'm at the behest of the mood of whichever utter dipshit on the phone I'm cold calling pressuring and guilt tripping into letting me quote at 8 AM for the 10th time. I'm barely 21, and I'm starting to get grey hairs and I have restless leg syndrome.

I'm done I need to get the fuck out and I don't know where to go because indeed is just littered with state farm BECOME YOUR OWN AGENT SIX FIGURES!!! life insurance pest control used auto car bullshit with "$150k OTE! FIRST YEAR 80K AVERAGE".

I'm a god damn salesman not a fucking replacement for your marketing and lead generation department. I'm supposed to use counter objections and HEALTHILY follow-up with INTERESTED business and consumers that have at the very least asked about out products and services once. THAT'S my job.

Are there literally any truly inbound positions left in existence where you don't have some bullshit draw pay period upon billing when the customers pay within your biweekly check timeframe shitty commission structure? All I want to fucking to do is pay my bills and everyone says oh yeah go for sales except I don't see ANYbody making anything you couldn't just go get a real job in for. I might as well have just gone to college and become a nurse at this point holy christ

3rd round interviews for big company: I'm outta my league

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 07:21 AM PST

I've bounced around industries from marketing to sales, then BDR to bartending and now back to cold calling sales due to the pandemic.

My professional jobs have been frustrating. Namely, I've been handed a phone book and been told to call. Even making 120 calls/day wasn't enough. These places I've worked have antiquated views on revenue generation.

Now, I'm interviewing at multimillion dollar XYZ company with hundreds of Fortune 500 clients, great pay, profit sharing and the works. This job would make me a fkn *rockstar. I'd finally have a solid career with advancement potential, the best pay of my life, and confidence for miles.

But I'm afraid that I'm going to choke, or I'm biting off more than I can chew. I can't even make sales for this part-time job I have now for a local business. (Yeah, yeah...pandemic may be why).

    • I've never met a sales quota consistently.
    • I was let go from my last BDR role.
    • I've been out of the professional world for years.
    • I've never had a revolutionary idea about sales.
    • I don't know a single person working at a Fortune 500, much less know how to network or sell to them.

None of these above things were for lack of passion or hard work. I'm college educated (lol) but just can't seem to get a leg up. Now that I might have it in sight, I'm panicking.

I feel like a fraud. I'm selling a product that I don't believe works. I have 0% skill and am relying 100% on personality, which wasn't enough to avoid losing my last job.

But they must see something in me, right? I'm sure my mental health issues are taking a toll on me here, but I'm going to have to walk into this new role guns blazing and wow everyone.

Seriously, how the heck can I pull this off?

Toronto/KW - Tech Sales Companies Compensation & Opportunities?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 11:16 AM PST

I'm graduating this year, living in GTA, with a little bit of BDR/sales internship experience, just wondering if anyone with more knowledge about the industry, and specifically in Toronto/KW region (since most info is US).

    1. Typical OTE expectations/earnings for BDR --> AE!
    2. Best companies to work for (in terms of compensation, training, or otherwise)
    3. Recruiting process? I'm not graduating until September 2021, so thinking if I should start immediately.

Primarily, any specific company names/opportunities for BDR/SDR roles in these regions would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

Edit: I've seen previous posts, but just seeing if more responses can be drawn.

Document Management Sales or Personal Loan Specialist

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 10:16 AM PST

    Hi Reddit,

I have two job offers and I'm not confident in which one is better.

Job offer one is inside sales at a document imaging/management company. It's not a large company, it has four offices between the U.S. and Europe and my main responsibilities would be setting appointments for the outside sales professionals to close. Compensation wise, $24k base with benefits, commission structure is $25 per appointment set, 1% commission on all sales closed, if the account is deemed to be "too small" I would be directed to complete the sales process from start to finish for 4% of the deal and additionally, if the client becomes an on going client of ours I would receive .5% of the residual business the client does.

During the interview process this is an entry level role and does offer a lot of room for improvement upon exceeding expectations.

Job offer two: personal loan specialist with a very large financial company. Essentially, offer personal and automobile loans while occasionally calling for debt payments from current customers. I'm not exactly sure how the commission structure works but the base pay is $36k with benefits.

Which job offer would be the best long term? Also, what other information could I provide to help give a better answer besides the obvious of job offer two commission structure.

Is this the best way to do Sandler training? I saw a bunch of CDs on eBay but don't know if they are the best way to go for it.

    CONSIDERING SALES

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 03:47 AM PST

TL;DR I'm thinking of changing my career path and applying to a different university course to do sales, how do I get far in it (is it easy to get connections through linked in and get a job quick out of the gate, what's the starting salary like etc- see questions at end)

Currently M18 in the UK, last year of sixth form. I've been pushed my entire life by my parents to study medicine, sure I wouldn't mind it and I'm currently in a position to apply for it but it really doesn't interest me it's a give or take and I feel I won't rly enjoy my life as a doctor. That being said I've been told Im good in interviews and at speaking and that I'm an outwardly person etc. After looking through this subreddit and researching jobs in sales and the lives people lead it seems very interesting as a career path and something I would be very interested. However I don't really have an idea of what I need to do to do well in sales, currently I'm considering applying to a Business Management and Marketing course at university through clearing as I've missed the UCAS deadline, but past that and past getting a 2:1 as I've seen quite a few job advertisers ask for that.

How would I get far in sales and to where I want to be without any current connections in the field? What's the starting salary like? Is business management and marketing a good course to be applying to?

SaaS sales simulation: what's the best way to discuss pricing when I don't know how much the product costs?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 09:28 PM PST

I've spent a lifetime in finance and today I have a SaaS sales simulation to see if I'd be any good. The role is for an AE. I've just realized that I don't know the pricing of the product. So in the simulation, if the potential customer asks me about pricing, how do I handle that conversation? Note the website doesn't include pricing either, just "contact us for a demo". Thanks

Any tips on getting into companies like AWS?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 03:27 PM PST

Just got burned bad on my commission and looking to make a switch into selling AWS.

A little bit of my background:

Just shy of 7 years of sales experience. 1 as an RSM for a SaaS company during the pandemic, 4 years of inside AE selling digital advertising, & 18 months of SDR at SaaS prior to becoming AE.

Closed three deals and hit 100% to Q4 quota in year one of onboarding for around $1m revenue

108% and 135% to quota 2018 and 2019 as AE. SDR of the Year award 2016.

I also have references from a CRO and another my former GM.

My background is pretty solid so far but it seems like AWS is tough to get into.

Does anyone here sell for AWS? If so - how'd you get in?

    Construction equipment sales

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 10:07 PM PST

    Construction Equipment Sales

I have an opportunity to interview with a local (but does business nationally) construction equipment inside sales job. I've done my research in the company, and it's certainly growing, seems like a good place to work overall. 2 questions..

    1) it almost seems like this is a lot of incoming calls. How much cold calling is there?

    2) the job posting said $60-90k first year potential, but on their website (maybe not updated or base??) it says 30-60k.

What's the general income for this type of sales job?

I have a plethora of retail sales (furniture, sports equipment etc) and a TON of sales leadership skills. I'm not worried about nailing the interview but I'm trying to be more educated on it.

    Thanks!

Auto Sales ---> Life Insurance = profit?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 03:13 PM PST

Anybody here gone from auto sales to life insurance?

After 6 years and yet another payplan cut, I'm exploring options, and looking for insight from those in life insurance or those who made the same move.

Any specific companies to look into or avoid?

Or other sales careers to look into all together?

Trying to understand where I fit in the sales world

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 06:26 PM PST

I graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering and I have my MBA. I currently am doing technical sales for a company in Dallas working with Automation equipment (been there for 2 years with a good record of success). I am making the move out to Orange County with my soon-to-be fiance next month and am actively applying for a huge variety of sales roles. I have gotten interest from some SaaS companies (about to start my 3rd interview with Paycom, and have other interviews flowing in from other automation/manufacturing sales roles), but I am not sure the best route to take my career at this point. Obviously, money is a big motivating factor for me, but I would like something that does provide some semblance of a work/life balance. Does anyone have advice for me? Anyone who has achieved a successful sales career where they are making 150k OTE+, how have you been able to get to that point and what advice would you give to someone with a background like mine trying to find a career path that suits them?

Thank you all for any help or advice in advance! Moving to Orange County/Irvine is a huge move and I want to do my best to make a good career choice at this juncture.

How can my dad, a health insurance agent, protect his book of business so that when he dies I can take it over?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 05:27 PM PST

I'm not sure if this post is better suited for r/insurance or r/legaladvice, so thank you in advance for your responses and feel free to direct me elsewhere.

Background: My dad has been a health insurance agent for 35 years. Our plan is for me to take over his book of business upon his demise. In the meantime, I am studying for my license and will be learning the ropes (how he markets, client retention, details about the products). I'll also eventually be writing some of my own business. He has no assets aside from his renewal income.

Question: So how exactly does a book of business get passed on? He's not entirely sure, either, and I can't find any details online. Does me being licensed at the time of his death coupled with being his sole heir mean I automatically get it? Do I just get the option to take it over? The logistics of becoming the agent of record for his BoB aside, I'm most concerned with what happens if he dies and has any debts. With no assets, can I be forced to sell his book of business to settle his estate? If so, is there a way to bypass that? I've read some about putting assets into some combination of an LLC and trust, but I know nothing about those things.

We plan on consulting with an attorney (not sure what kind... estate maybe?), because with something like this, I know there's no substitute for legal counsel. That said, I'd just love to hear from health insurance agents out there who have considered similar things in terms of succession planning. You all are the experts, after all!

Thanks again for any insight you guys can provide.
