Can a neighbor prevent me from having electricity at my house? Posted: 31 Jan 2021 05:21 AM PST I have a property in the woods that I have spent the last year clearing to build a house on. I am close to starting the build. I have plans finalized with the builder, am close to closing on a home loan, and and working on getting power lines installed down the road to my property. The power company planner was out on Friday and told me which way he wanted the power lines to come in from. As a courtesy I asked the farmer who owns the property next to mine where the poles would be installed if I could trim back some trees on the border between our property. He told me that he would not allow poles to be installed on his land and that he has stopped it from happening before and he will again. If I had to bring the poles in from the other side of the road it would require cutting hundreds of trees and the power company has already stated they want to put poles along the farm land. Can he stop the power company from putting in poles along the road? Edit: the property is in Ohio [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jan 2021 08:43 PM PST Edit: This is in WA Back in April I took 3 months of forbearance and then was able to push it back to the end of my mortgage. Now I think at the end of the year there was a glitch in their system when creating tax documents and it made alot of "payment adjustments" to my mortgage and put a -$15000 balance on my account plus increased my principle by $5000 (my monthly payments normally are $2000 a month and I have never missed a payment). I have called daily for the past 2 weeks to get this fixed however the representatives who pick up all have different stories. One says system is under maintenance and it will be fixed soon, another says I have to talk to the person in charge of this to fix it. But the issue is this person hasn't been to work presumably for the past 2 weeks. I have left multiple voice mails and they haven't called me back. Today I received a notice that I am behind on my payments (the -$15000 balance) and online on my account it says I am in foreclosure. My lender is PNC Bank. I have no idea what I should do. I have no issue paying back the 3 month my loan was in forbearance right now if it will fix this mess but I can't seem to get a hold of the person I need to talk to. I have a few mortagge statements from 2020 as proof that my account has been current, what my principle should be and etc...! I am also unsure if my mortgage tax documents are correct or not for 2020 to file my taxes due to this mess. What are my options here? Do I just need to wait and hope for the person in charge of this issue to get back to me? If my house really is in foreclosure based on whats on my online account, how long do I have before someone comes knocking at the door and tell me to leave? Any help is appreciated! Posted: 31 Jan 2021 05:59 AM PST In Kansas it's legal to shoot a dog that is harassing livestock. After the last time at large dogs killed several of my goats I got two livestock guard dogs. Last night another at large dog came onto my property, it was intercepted by my guard dogs. But wouldn't back down or leave. Since my dogs aren't livestock am I still legally allowed to shoot the at large dog? I live outside of town, calling any law enforcement is typically an hour wait, so not really practical... Last night i fired two rounds into the ground to scare it off, but I'm not really a fan of this as a solution. Thank you in advance for your advice. [link] [comments] |
Car Delivered with Unacceptable Cosmetic Damage Posted: 31 Jan 2021 06:06 AM PST Hi everyone!I don't think I have any case here but I wanted to ask anyway. I had a new 2021 Tesla Model 3 that was delivered to me with a handful of issues including: - 10+ deep scratches and scuffs (below clear coat and the paint layer) in trunk area, A-pillar, doors, and grill - Damage on back of front passenger seat (dent and unrepairable scratches) - Millions of micro-scratches (but can likely be buffed out) - Headliner Damage (threads coming out) - Defects, defects everywhere (Typical of tesla but big panel gaps across the car, misalignment of headliner, door handles, awful screen backlight bleed, loud and weird noises while driving.) All of my concerns were reported within 48 hours (and 100 miles) of receiving the car, with most of the cosmetic issues being on-the-spot prior to delivery acceptance. Unfortunately, I bought into Tesla lies that promised me that would fix these issues so it looked new and I accepted the car delivery. (Which I'm hating myself over...) They "rectified" all the issues poorly with poor color matching on the scratches, damaged the headliner more by replacing it, and fixed only a fraction of the defects. Tesla is dragging their feet on doing any proper paint repair on the scratches other than cheap-looking touchup. My question here is - is there any legal argument I have with Tesla regarding this? I've only had the car for a little over a month and 300 miles and I'm sitting here with poorly matched touchup paint across the car (they even missed several scratches...), poorly installed replacement parts, and continued defects. This car undoubtedly was delivered in "used" quality despite being purchased as a new car. Just looking for some advice here, thank you! Ideally, I'd love them to match me with a NEW car that looks NEW but I don't think I have a legal argument for that. Edit - I'm in new Jersey if it matters. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2021 09:57 AM PST [NY] Last year my landlord threw out a bunch of stuff during quarantine/mid renovation including almost 30+ bags of stuff that belonged to his 40 ish adult son who lived with him. Apparently they had an argument about his piles of old comics, videogame cartons, consoles and other nerdy stuff. Which led to him impulsively throwing everything out in a act of rage. It was left outside for almost half a month because the company that would have picked it up couldn't due to a statewide quarantine of non essential businesses/ garbage men refused to take every bag because they had no room in their truck for all stuff. The stuff was left out in the rain and some bags even had roaches/stray cats claw into them. His wife knew tenants liked to salvage stuff and told me I could help her out by taking stuff I like since she knew I also liked nerdy things. (I also had intentions to maybe sell some stuff for profit and made that clear to the her) So I went through every bag one by one. Salvaged some items. Some stuff I actually packed in a truck and donated them to charity. so kids can enjoy nerdy things too. Other things I kept for myself and restored them to working/sellable condition. Or other tenants took them. Every step of the way I spoke to my landlord and told him that some stuff looks valuable and might be a source of nostalgia for his son and offered to give it back. Each time his son didn't care (mainly because he was mid game online and didn't want to be bothered) and I figured that was the end of it. Recently my landlord was doing some renovations and I noticed that some of the items which I moved into the hall temporarily until construction is over went missing. Specifically my nerdy stuff I salvaged and some of my personal stuff I bought as well. I highly doubt other tenants stole it because they are all 70+ and don't speak English, let alone see the value in comics. And their grandkids did not have access to construction area. And my landlord renovates by himself for small repairs. I suspect my landlords son took "his stuff back" and some of mine too. I don't have much in terms of photo proof because I never really thought someone would steal this stuff. But some of the things I had were expensive. How would I go about this? I like my living space and have no problems with my landlord for the 5+ years I have lived here. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2021 01:10 AM PST EDIT 2: I've called over 20 law offices and they are all closed until tommorrow. I got a hold of one, but he wanted 6k and it was still iffy. He couldn't offer much information but maybe. Kudos for him picking up so late in the night though. My girlfriend owes me 7800, but ill never get it back. **I have put out a 3,000 reward on Rivetz **** EDIT: THE OFFICER from last did tell me she wpuld be filing an ex party Monday. I haven't had any contact with her. I even waited for the police escort. Monday night my girlfriend told me she loved me at 8 30, and by 10 I was ghosted while working out of town. I get to my house Saturday at 11am. My dog is gone.. I play john wick tracking her through Gmail to find my dog 11 hours away in Missouri. I got a civil standby and even showed the officer the clear and concise paperwork showing purchase and even the microchip registration information. The officer walks out and sternly tells me I'm not allowed on the property because my ex said I gave the dog to her. I absolutely did not under any circumstances. What do I do? My company is named after my dog. I love my dog. Shes been my best buddy for over a year and my kids are attached too. What can I do? I'm seeing a lawyer in just a few hours... Please help me. God bless all of you. I'm losing touch in reality. [link] [comments] |
Political signs still on public property Posted: 31 Jan 2021 01:41 PM PST My township is refusing to remove political signs from public property. They say they can't do anything because of a Supreme Court case Reed v. Town of Gilbert. Is this true? I thought maybe someone here could give me some arguments I could use to push back against the Supreme Court rationale. The township's Codes Director, who is in charge of this, is just some recent college grad with no legal background. So it seems like he is just parroting a talking point to justify his inaction. my neighbors and I really don't want 2020 election signs up at our intersections forever [link] [comments] |

[New York City] Hired on H1B visa but job never matched requirements; what now? Posted: 31 Jan 2021 02:37 AM PST I'm a 25 year old Swedish woman hired on a H1B to work in IT work in 2018. However, I've not done a single IT-related thing; the job's been mostly bikini modelling for the boss's other venture and modelling lingerie in New York City on the street. Apparently the boss told me via email:
I spent thousands moving here and not sure if I can go back now due to flight bans etc.?? I'm being asked to come in to work still, just for bikini photos to be taken for this website. Not sure what to do now; can I sue the owner or not, is it worth it? What should I do over this IT job I took on in 2018? It was February 2018 that I got the job. [link] [comments] |
Anonymous neighbour dispute over cats Posted: 31 Jan 2021 06:25 AM PST TLDR at the bottom.Hi, so I live in apartment building complex and after a year of our life here, problems with our neighbour started. So we have balcony and two cats that prefer spending time on it as they have warmed cat house including everything cats might need, but they also spend some time indoors. The neighbour that lives above us and has a great view over our balcony and seems like he minds the cats and sent us anonymous letter saying that we're wrongdoing by having cats on the balcony and he will report us for animal abuse. After I got call from animal abuse organization, I explained the situation, women concluded that everything is OK on our side and closed the case. We thought that will be end of it until one evening neighbour stormed down angry at our door complaining about cats making noise. We didn't wanted any problems further on and we decided on selling off the cats. In two weeks we sold both cats and 4 months went by without further problems with neighbour.Yesterday, we got a new letter. Quite disturbing claiming that we are disgusting, that we had and eventually killed both cats and throw them away in plastic bag in trash and that he/she is neighbour "that seen everything". It also has a racist note saying that we're not in our own country. The letter shook us so much and it's quite disturbing to be accused for such a horrible thing. Now, we have obviously all the proofs and witnesses that both cats are sold; Chat transcripts, and photos from new owners, and receipts that we paid for listings four months ago.I would take it directly with neighbour that lives above us, but I can't be 100% that he is the one that sent the letters. If this gets to the court, I'm concerned as we would not like to have the new owners disturbed, it's just a huge inconvenience.I am considering leaving him the anonymous letter without context so if he's the one that sent us letter he will know exactly who is it from. If he's not, he'll be just very confused. What would you do? TLDR; Anonymous neighbour that we had issues with accused us (through unsigned letter) that we killed the cats four months after we sold them. Edit: Just to make clear, this is my throwaway account. I don't want my neighbour to make connection to my real identity. [link] [comments] |
Open Container - I was the designated driver Posted: 31 Jan 2021 11:13 AM PST Hi, I hope everyone is safe and healthy! Background:
Incident: Yesterday, I went to the University of Georgia to see my friend for his birthday and around 3 am, I volunteered to drive my friend's car to grab food. While we were placing our orders, a cop came in and asked who was driving the red car. I responded saying I was driving but it wasn't my car. We stepped outside and he pointed his flashlight to the pocket behind the driver's seat where there were an empty bud light can and an unopened bottle of seltzer. Later after pouring it out he found an open vodka and more unopened seltzer bottles. He wrote me a citation for an open container. I have never gotten a ticket or crashed a car, I'm super bummed out because I'm a junior in college and currently searching for jobs and most unfortunately I DONT DRINK and got in trouble for it. Questions:
I really appreciate any help I receive and I hope everyone has a great day! [link] [comments] |
Many packages delivered to my address to someone who doesn't live here - random expensive stuff Posted: 31 Jan 2021 07:48 AM PST Location: US, Colorado. I have gotten about 16 packages delivered to my address to someone who doesn't live here. The packages were delivered two or three weeks ago and new deliveries have apparently stopped. The deliveries are UPS and Fedex (not Amazon or USPS, which other similar posts reference). There is a phone number for the recipient on the packages, texting it illicits no response, calling it gets a generic 'not connected to service' message. These packages are not at all connected to each other (scooter parts, clothes, router bit company, return services, etc.). I thought the person might be creeping across the street waiting for a delivery to pick them up off my porch, but even if I don't bring the packages in overnight, no one comes to pick them up. This crap takes up a lot of space. The one clue I have was that one package arrived ripped open, the invoice has an email address (someone's name that is different than the package recipient's name). I emailed it and haven't gotten a response. The contents of that package were worth about $100. I have reason to believe the contents of the other packags are not insignicant dollar values either. What am I obligated to do, what should I do, how do I not get in trouble for what I decide to do? Thanks for the help. [link] [comments] |
[CA] Bought a house but not the property it sits on. Yeah I'm a total idiot. Posted: 31 Jan 2021 01:30 PM PST Throwaway because I'm generally kind of smart on my main. TL;DR: I'm a gullible, trusting dumbass who got a hold of too much money, made some bad decisions, and ended up getting scammed. I inherited a fairly large amount of money recently and decided to use part of it to buy a house. Coincidentally, I got word that an acquaintance (one of those 'friend of a friend you've never actually met' things. I know, I know) was looking to sell their place in my target area. I go take a look and decide, yeah this is it. He suggested a price that was really good - it was below market, but not unrealistic given I was paying cash in full so I accepted. This was about two weeks ago. There was an inspection, everything's great. I had my buddy in law school (don't even say it) look over the contract, he said it checks out. He may want to consider another career path, I don't know. So, the the deal is done. We closed on Thursday and just like that I'm a fucking homeowner! Except it turns out that the home is all I own. Just the house, not even a single blade of grass on the property. And, of course, immediately after closing this dildo goes and changes the gate & alarm codes and puts up "No Trespassing" signs. There's no easement or anything so the only way I can see of getting into my house is dropping in through the skylight. Which I'm honestly not completely against. And, no, actually, I'm totally into it, but I don't want to assume all of my Postmates delivery guys will be. And then there's the issue of utilities because yeah, I have none of those right now. He did graciously offer to buy the house back from me, nice guy that he is. And by that I mean he offered to let me pay him to take the house back for way more than I bought it for. So yeah, I made a lot of mistakes and obviously got taken advantage of but I also feel like this scam wasn't very well thought out and has a lot of holes in it, so I might be able to make it through with minimal losses if I stop going with the worst possible options I have in front of me. Yeah? Maybe? And yes, because I do have some brain cells, I'm meeting with a (real, degree-holding, member of the bar) real estate lawyer this week but figure it can't hurt to crowdsource a bit. Make sure there isn't anything I should bring or ask that I haven't considered or even if I need another or different kind of lawyer. So give it to me. Anything particular I should I prepare? And on a scale of 1 to just install a helipad, how boned am I? [link] [comments] |
Father calling in false welfare checks with police Posted: 31 Jan 2021 01:15 PM PST My dad just called in a welfare check and I had to speak to police. We both know that it was for no reason and a waste of everyone's time. He called my mom and admitted to calling it in, the reason being my mom had a friend over. Is there anything my mom can do to stop this harassment from the police because of my dad. Yesterday the police came to my house too "to keep the peace" Edit: for most of my life my dad has used the police to intimidate my mom even before the split. I live in Southern California if that matters [link] [comments] |
My sister is on drugs and her kids are suffering. Idk what I can do. Posted: 31 Jan 2021 01:05 PM PST I'm located in Texas and my sister is in Louisiana- I (35M) have 2 kids. My daughter lives with her mom and my son is my wife and me's child. My wife and I are closing on a house, I'm graduating on Thursday and my wife is starting her job in a few weeks. My brother has been helping my mom watch my sisters kids. My niece, is about 12 now. She has had it hard. Her brother has his dad but my niece has no one at it seems. My brother tries as hard as he can and he does a damn good job but my family needs help. My sister(31F) is probably addicted to crack and maybe some other stuff. I know she abuses pills and alcohol pretty heavily. She yells at her kids constantly and is ALWAYS drunk or something else. When my wife and I visited once, my son was asleep in his playpen at about 7am. My wife didn't get much sleep because of allergies and all and our boy kept us awake most of the night because he was in a foreign place. My sister loudly comes into the house and then barges in the room. I hear my son crying and go in and see her trying to hold him. Her skin color is flushed red and she reeks of alcohol. My wife was absolutely upset and I was pretty stern and told my sister that she needed to get the hell out of there because she just woke him. I later apologized for being mean but asked for understanding from her. That was about 2 years ago and we haven't been back to my moms since. We have been working on our credit scores and getting our life and our family the best we can. Fast forward to now my brother calls me and tells me my sister comes home, goes to the bathroom, he hears smoke "something" and just leaves. Doesn't say anything to her kids at all. My brother says he went into the bathroom and there was a chemical smell, it was definitely off. He then went outside to speak to my sister and her pupils were dilated and she was just wasted. She then left. I called my sister after what my brother told me and before I could ask anything at all she simply told me that she doesn't smoke crack and hung up. There is so much in between stuff here that I'm not getting into. But for a few things I just want to say that my family and myself has tried to be there for my sister. We supported her and tried to help with her addictions the best we could. I have given her advice on how to try and be as successful as she can be or how to get in school with no money and all that but she simply didn't do it. Her substance abuse is leaking into her children's lives and unfortunately they're suffering badly. My niece wants to stay with my wife and I for a bit as a visit. My wife and I have been saying we want to adopt my niece to keep her out of there. Honestly, I hate the idea. My sister should be able to at least take care of her kids. But she can't. She has no jobs, no financial support. Her boyfriend is her dealer. I do not know what I can do. Can I take temporary custody of my niece? Her father has no communication with her and he is a meth addict. Or was. But he is gone from her life just like my sister now. I just want to help my niece but I honestly don't know what to do. We know what's best and we are near great schools and can afford them. But what if that's not good for my niece? I simply don't know but it's hurting so bad to see my family so broken because of some stupid street drug. Any advice would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
I had my identity stolen 2 years ago. This morning I received air trip confirmation on my email Posted: 31 Jan 2021 04:47 AM PST I'm not a citizen, just a student from Russia who came on some US summer exchange program. Long story short, my identity was stolen 2 years ago and I suspect it was sold to some immigrant. This morning I received air trip confirmation on my email from Miami to Ontario. My guess is that it was that guy that has my identity now, but I don't really get why this info came to my email box. Now I know his first and last name and ticket information. Is there any way I can report that he's using my identity in his purpose? The only thing I can do for now is just cancel his flight huh Any suggestions? Update: this guy bought another ticket. Misspelled again? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2021 09:37 AM PST International business partner not paying employees Weird situation, an old high school acquaintance reach out to me with a business idea. He had recently moved to New Zealand and saw a market for a piece of software. I at first said no but as I started to do my own research I realized it actually wasn't a bad idea! So he incorporated the company in New Zealand and said I had 25% which is the max for a non resident (I am in the US). As I started to build out the software for equity he said he had some money if I wanted to bring on other developers. So I reached out to a friend who would be great, we agreed on a salary and got him started. I also found another person to work part time for an hourly rate. He said he created a joint bank account for the company with my name which I was cool with. Initially the paper work took forever and that is why he couldn't get people paid. Then excuse after excuse came for why the money wasn't coming to my friends who had been working... he even sent over transfer docs from the bank showing a transfer. Then he tryed transferwise in which he would share the link showing the status of the transfer but the money would never come. This had gone on for about a month and a half. At this point I really started to question everything, I called the New Zealand bank which the joint account was setup and that the money was sent from. When I asked about the bank account number on the transfer document as well as the transfer number neither the account existed or the transfer initiated which means he forged them. But when I look on New Zealand's company registry i can see the company has been registered. When confronted on the phone he said that was false and after that I haven't heard a word out of him for 3 weeks now... the employees we did have signed a document to the company confirming what we would pay them. My question is going after him for forging a bank document and not paying employees who signed a contract with a registered New Zealand company possible? In total the pay not received is ~$7,000. Where do I even start with the legal process in another company? And will I even get taken seriously by authorities over there? [link] [comments] |

What happens if defendent shows up to court hearing without being served first? Posted: 31 Jan 2021 01:06 PM PST Edit: California I have a temporary restraining order (TRO) against my husband, but he is avoiding service with the help of his family. The sheriff has attempted service 9 times already. I know my husband knows about the domestic violence restraining order (DVRO) hearing, because he made a note of it and left it on the kitchen table after changing the locks on the house (to prevent me from accessing my home). I was able to safely get into the house with the help of a police officer and that's how I saw the note. Here's my question: is it possible he will/can show up to the hearing without having been served first? I think he's trying to avoid having to relinquish his firearms (at least 10?) before trying to get the TRO/DVRO dismissed at the hearing. That way, he never has to part with his guns. Pure speculation on my part. Not sure how else he would benefit from avoiding service other than to get more time to prepare for the hearing. I have a lawyer on retainer, but I don't want to spend $$$ to maybe not get an answer to an uncommon question. Any responses are appreciated! [link] [comments] |
[CA] My brother suffered domestic abuse last night Posted: 31 Jan 2021 12:45 PM PST Long story short my BIL was hanging out with this girl Late last night in LA county at her apartment and she snapped and started punching him in the face full force out of nowhere. This girl in my eyes is a sociopath. She's been caught lying about so many things, her age, fully removed back tattoos, having problems with her spine, where she was, what languages she speaks and many more. So the girl just had a personality disorder snap and started wailing on my brother. She hit him approx 5-10 times directly in the face, bloodied and probably broke his nose. My brother did the right thing and didn't lay a hand on her until mid assault on his face, he grabbed her hands and pinned them against the bed. This was the only time my brother claimed to even have touched her in this assault. The first time it happened, he sent my wife a video to save as evidence and I threw on clothes and started driving to pick him up. While I was driving he smartly continued to secretly record and document what was happening. The video has her basically admitting to the crime saying "so what I hit you in the face a couple times?". The videos include her admission, her face, his bloodied face, blood all over the carpet and bed and him being degraded on audio. He didn't want to go to the cops last night because he was too messed up emotionally but I really think we should get a strike on her record. If anyone has some info on what we can smartly do with all this evidence I would appreciate it. Edit: he definitely isn't staying with her to make this abundantly clear. We had already expressed our dislike for this girl and I think he got the point this time.. [link] [comments] |
Parents died in accident, Unanswered questions about real estate Posted: 30 Jan 2021 07:12 PM PST Long story short. Parents were in a horrible accident overseas. They are still paying on a house in the states. In their will, I was to get the house that they were paying on. My credit situation is screwed from my recent divorce and cant get a mortgage currently. I am able to afford their house payment. Do I just continue making the house payment?? Won't the bank see its a check from me or my online account? Does the house go in my name? I am in Ohio and dont know if laws vary by state. Any help is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
