How to shift my mindset from computer programming and team management to business starter? Posted: 05 Jan 2021 10:19 AM PST Tl;dr: How can I shift my mentality from thinking about the details to building a company or a team that can do it? How where you able to do it? I'm 35 and over the past 12 years, I worked as a computer programmer, lead developer, software development manager in a very specific field (C++, microcontrollers, Sensors, No web app experience or Internet connectivity has been ever needed in my work). Since I had some time during COVID, I have been shifting my focus to other areas and I have a few ideas (Related to technology, web apps and mobile apps) that I have been analyzing the business model and I'm closer to get ready to start one of them. One problem that I face everyday (and I'm sure many technical workers face too) is that I think about the tiny implementation details. I take an idea and think about how it could be implemented. For example, if I have a web app idea (and since I don't have much experience in this field), I start learning about the frontend, backend, servers, databases, cloud infrastructure, programming languages and so on. I wish that I was knowledgeable and a faster implementer but the fact is that I'm taking a bit of time to learn these technologies. Recently, I came across many many people who don't know anything about the technology of the product that they are building, yet they start a company, get investment, build a team and keep moving. And so, I realized that with my good enough technical expertise, I should be able to start my company. I thought about getting an MBA as I have the money but I feel it is a waste of time. I feel I need a network (since in all honesty, that's one thing I lack) and the MBA could help with that, and maybe shift my mindset but I still find that it wastes time and money. I would rather spend the money on the product. So, how can I shift my mentality? How where you able to do it? Are there any books that can help me do the shift? How to throw myself out there? How to stop thinking and work more on the doing side? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Top 3 Tips We Use As A Company To Deliver Customer Service Posted: 05 Jan 2021 07:07 AM PST Hey guys, Hope you had great holidays and are now gearing up business for 2021 (and that this year is way better for everyone than last year). To kick off 2021, our founder just wrote an article on customer service in our web services company, with focus on 3 core principles: 1) Be human 2) AI has its place, and it's not everywhere 3) Passion Refocussing on customer service is a good way to start off the year :-). If you have any stories, tips or feedback of your own, please share with us in the comments! -- Amazing Customer Service. Those are words we all hear every day. We hope to receive amazing customer service when we talk to any number of our providers in this day and age. The sad truth is that only a few companies really understand what those words mean, and even less execute on them. It's our sincere hope that we do achieve the understanding of those words and execute on them. Every single day. Here are the top points on how we work on providing our version of amazing customer service. 1 – Be a human being It's easy to forget, but we are all human beings. What do you human beings have that no other technology can even come close to replicating? Emotions. Every team member who works at Skystra must have empathy. And not only our customer service team. Everyone. We are all here because of our customers, and so the approach to every problem, the solution to every problem, starts with empathy. We put ourselves in our customers' position. Sure, we'll see the same question dozens of times per day. That's what supporting customers is like. However, for our customer who is asking the question, they need the help. They need the answer, and to them, in that moment, it is the most important question they have. So we treat it as such. We care. 2 – AI has its place, and it's not everywhere Artificial Intelligence and by extension, Machine Learning, have made huge strides. However, that doesn't make them anywhere near equivalent to a human being. To this day, chat bots and AI cannot understand a problem someone has, unless that person spells it out for them. They don't have any empathy or troubleshooting skills. That's why we keep all in-house AI reserved for mundane backend tasks. We attempted to put a bit of AI in the customer service side of things, and the result was… not good. Customers actually started getting frustrated pretty early on in interactions, and even though we spent a lot of money and energy into trying to make the AI be more human-like and added a bunch of decision trees our data supported, it just didn't work. Human beings are still the best at figuring out and solving problems. And in our view, that won't change for a long time. 3 – Passion To do something well, you just have to be good at it. To do something exceptionally well, you need to have passion for it. Hosting websites, at least to those in the industry, doesn't seem like much. But when you look at what a cloud hosting company does behind the scenes, you'll find a ton of passionate people who all love what they do. And that is true for customer service too. This section is too long for just one blog post, but one of the things we do really well, is hire people who are passionate. And we truly have an extremely dedicated team in customer service. People who genuinely love being helpful and seeing their efforts go towards fixing problems right on the spot. Make no mistake, this is a rare skill set to find. Lots of people are passionate, but those who are truly passionate about helping others, and solving their problems, are so very rare. And that's what makes these people, this team, our company, so very good at what we do. It's not just the technology, it's first and foremost the service. You can copy technology, you can't copy service. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Jan 2021 09:26 AM PST Hey all, I could really use your feedback on this free Business Idea Evaluator tool I've posted... it calculates a probable Success Rating for your business idea...The Problem: Entrepreneurs have a lot of business ideas - and they need to be evaluated The Solution: A free online tool that can fairly accurately give you a sense of the strength of your business idea in a few minutes. What's Hard About This Problem: There is such a great number of variables and different types of businesses and models that it's hard to create a 'one size fits all' evaluation... BUT... I have one ready for you to try out. I could really use your feedback on the Business Idea Evaluation quiz here: https://startabusiness.center/ ALSO if you can, I would also love some feedback on the website itself which is aimed at new founders/entrepreneurs who are trying to figure out what to do with their business ideas/efforts and trying to figure out what they need to know to proceed, and not to fail hopefully. To test the Business Evaluation tool, just click the big blue button on homepage or the link in nav - you'll see it. Think of a business idea you have, and be honest with your answers. See what happens and let me know: What the evaluation insightful? Did it seem like it scored you properly? Accurate? Did you learn about your potential weak areas and strengths re: the business idea? What could be done differently? Anything you liked or disliked about it? Thanks!! (I'm kinda bracing myself now that I'm asking for the feedback, but I hope you find value in the tool!) -Tim P.S. My background is 20+ years in mostly tech startups - founding, mentoring, consulting, etc. [link] [comments] |
Inc magazine online just features us! Posted: 05 Jan 2021 12:36 PM PST This was a pleasant surprise to see this morning. I was interviewed months ago and didn't think we were going to be featured. Our story is pretty unique. Almost entirely done with 0 marketing (we have a marketing manager now though). The feature isn't the most in-depth story but maybe there are some nuggets in there that can help or inspire. Happy to answer questions as we'll. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Jan 2021 11:27 AM PST You are gonna have some extremely demotivating moments at times. Don't take them that seriously. They'll pass after a few hours or so. Keep going but also keep a check on your mental health. Peace. [link] [comments] |
What do you recommend I do, sell my online course on Udemy or Shopify? Posted: 05 Jan 2021 11:26 AM PST I have been taking the first steps to sell a software course online for 2 weeks now, but I find the following situation ... I don't know whether to sell the course on Udemy or sell it on Shopify. I know that Udemy will make it easier for me to upload the videos and sell the course, plus Udemy already has people registered who can buy my course. While Shopify feels freer when it comes to deciding the price, I don't know, I've never used any other platform. What do you recommend I do, sell my online course on Udemy or Shopify? Posted: 05 Jan 2021 02:35 AM PST Currently working on something that I think is a really good idea but the few times that I've mentioned it to a marketing person or investor they get the urge to shoot it down immediately and usually without good reason. Its providing a solution for a problem that millions have and the numbers make sense but they don't think people will pay for it. I do and I'm proving it by getting people to sign up but man is it hard hearing people put your idea down. Just wanted to hear from others that may have went through something simar on their way up. Posted: 05 Jan 2021 11:16 AM PST I don't really know any HTML, so I'm pretty much stuck with shopify's basic editing tools. I've considered hiring a web developer. Most of my sales these days are coming from Instagram, and while that's fine for now I want the landing page to really be what pulls people in. Kindof a shot in the dark here but any input is appreciated. I could budget $150-200 to get someone to make it look nice but I'm no so keen on whats "in" right now so I don't think I'd be able to give them any real direction and I'm afraid i'd just be wasting my time and money doing that. Selling an experience to high net worth or ultra high net worth individuals Posted: 05 Jan 2021 10:17 AM PST Many Mt. Everest guides are in the business of selling (for a lot of money) the experience of attempting to summit Mt. Everest to rich people with very little climbing experience. Does anyone have any other examples of businesses who sell an amazing experience? Everest kind of sells itself but I would be interested in researching and contacting people who provide less extreme (and less controversial amongst the climbing community) services to see how they market to these clients. There are things like auto racing camp but I am thinking an experience in the $5MM to $10MM range. [link] [comments] |
Looking to monetize a single-function website. Any suggestions? Posted: 05 Jan 2021 05:32 AM PST I have a website that's got a pretty simple function - you throw a link into a box, hit a button, then it scrapes an image from that link so you can easily download it It's not super high-traffic, the function gets called anywhere from 600-1100 times per day on average, and Google search console says it gets around 100 clicks per day from them (not really sure what the most important metric is). So it's not a lot of traffic, but it's not nothing either. What I'm thinking instead is if I could potentially find someone who would want to directly advertise with me, cutting out the middle-man. i.e. toss me a few bucks per month and I'll give you a prime ad spot on my front page. Several thousand views per month in visibility probably isn't worth that much, but I think it could be worth a little more than the pennies I make now, and it could give me a little bit of a budget to improve some stuff on the website, which I'm currently doing all I can to pay as little as possible. Posted: 05 Jan 2021 04:11 AM PST I want to promote a collection of ebooks from the same author, they're currently for sale online with no marketing. Any recommendations for a small marketing firm that specializes in ebooks? The books are well regarded and would likely do decent sales if creative muscle was applied. [link] [comments] |
Is company debt always a bad thing? Posted: 05 Jan 2021 03:13 AM PST I've noticed that with much larger companies, they're sometimes in quite a lot of debt. A company I was watching made £10M revenue in 2020 but had £37M in expenses. Granted, they may be sitting on lots of capital but I would imagine it wouldn't last long with such a difference in profit and loss. Can companies use debt to grow the company, is this common? - Is it a bad thing? Thanks for the replies. :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Jan 2021 03:07 AM PST I want to be an entrepreneur and start a company someday. No idea what that is yet. Maybe more years working and I'll finally have a decent idea to execute. Whatever the case, I'd like to be competitive. Which is the better option to achieve that? [link] [comments] |
Anyone have some ideas for a drop ship store? Thank you very much. Posted: 05 Jan 2021 08:06 AM PST I'm just some moron 16 year old and obviously looking to make some money, drop shipping doesn't seem like the best way but it does seem easier for me in my current circumstances. I just don't have a lot of inspiration for what to do. Do you guys have any ideas? It probably needs to be pretty niche, so far I've thought of stuff like: Pet clothing or just pet toys and stuff because people spend a lot of money on that but otherwise I don't really know. I would really appreciate if you could give me some ideas. Thanks you very much! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Jan 2021 10:22 PM PST Hello! I started a business in June and built my website, launched social media, and networked with a ton of people in similar spheres, did research, and asked potential clients for feedback. Anytime I tell people my business I hear things like "wow, it's so great that exists - you must be busy!" Or "that is amazing!" And I am the opposite of busy. I just started a consistent social media campaign and partnered with a marketer to try to help spread the word. We have a 3 month plan as of now but the patience is really hard. I know it generally takes awhile to get businesses going but I'm just feeling discouraged. How do I know if this is just not going to work? I've given myself until my kids are in school in-person for 6 months before I throw in the towel, but I wonder if that's unreasonable. And if it's not, how do I keep up motivation? I suppose I'm looking for support? [link] [comments] |
