    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Fundamentals Friday Oct 09, 2020

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 01:06 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on fundamentals, but if fundamentals aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against fundamentals here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Most fundamentals are updated every 3 months due to the fact that corporations release earnings reports every quarter, so traders are always speculating at what those earnings will say, and investors may change the size of their holdings based on those reports. Expect a lot of volatility around earnings, but it usually doesn't matter if you're holding long term, but keep in mind the importance of earnings reports because a trend of declining earnings or a decline in some other fundamental will drive the stock down over the long term as well.

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

    Market Cap - Shares Outstanding - Volume - Dividend - EPS - P/E Ratio - EPS Q/Q - PEG - Sales Q/Q - Return on Assets (ROA) - Return on Equity (ROE) - BETA - SMA - quarterly earnings

If you have a basic question, for example "what is EBITDA," then google "investopedia EBITDA" and click the Investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

U.S. tech stocks are now worth more than the entire European stock market.

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 01:17 AM PDT

The dominance of major U.S. tech stocks in recent years has pushed the sector past another milestone as it is now more valuable than the entire European stock market, according to Bank of America Global Research.

The firm said in a note that this is the first time the market cap of the U.S. tech sector, at $9.1 trillion, exceeds Europe, which including the UK and Switzerland is now at $8.9 trillion. For reference, the firm said that in 2007, Europe was four times the size of U.S. technology stocks.

AMD said to be in advanced talks to buy Xilinx in over $30 billion deal

    Posted: 08 Oct 2020 10:13 PM PDT

    https://www.cnbc.com/2020/10/09/amd-said-to-be-in-advanced-talks-to-buy-xilinx-in-over-30-billion-deal-.html

Advanced Micro Devices is in advanced talks to buy rival chip maker Xilinx in a deal that could be valued at more than $30 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported late Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.

A deal, which could mark the latest big tie-up in the rapidly consolidating semiconductor industry, can come together as soon as next week, the newspaper reported.

AMD has seen a higher usage of its products recently, driven in part by an overall surge in chip demand due to a global shift to work from home, and market-share gains from larger rival Intel.

Here is a Market Recap for today Fri, Oct 9, 2020. Please enjoy!

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 01:06 PM PDT

    PsychoMarket Recap - Friday, October 9, 2020

Stocks traded higher today as market participant's closely monitor developments in a new virus-relief package amid mixed signals from top officials as to the size and scope of a proposal they might support.

The Nasdaq (QQQ) led the day, finishing the day 1.53% up. The S&P (SPY) finished 0.86% up and the Dow (DIA) finished 0.54% up.

Traders continue to closely monitor developments out of Washington weighing whether more stimulus will be passed, be it comprehensive or targeted. Despite Pres. Trump's recent tweet saying he was not willing to negotiate further stimulus until the election, negotiations appear to continue. According to top officials and economic analysts, the passage of additional is key in encouraging and fast-tracking the recovery of the pandemic-stricken economy.

According to multiple reports from CNBC, the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg and others, the White House is prepared to offer a new stimulus proposal totalling $1.8 trillion, about $400 billion below what the Democrats are asking for but an increase from the original $1.6 trillion offer. It's unclear what specific provisions will be included in the drafted legislation, but the earlier plan included a fresh round of $1,200 stimulus checks; expanded unemployment benefits at $400 per week and additional funding for state and local government. While a large gap still remains between the two proposals, let's hope that the White House showing willingness to negotiate adds goodwill and Congress can come to an agreement. Today Trump tweeted "Covid Relief Negotiations are moving along. Go Big!"

Adding to the optimis, White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow told Fox Business that the President "wants to do a deal." This is a remarkable turnaround considering Pres. Trump's recent tweet where he said he was not willing to negotiate an additional deal. The market has positively responded to this development.

Yesterday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin discussed further stimulus for about an hour. After the meeting Drew Hamill, Pelosi's spokesperson, said in a tweet that Mnuching made clear the President's interest in reaching an agreement for a comprehensive package after Pelosi made clear he would not support a standalone, targeted bill. In a note to clients Jeffrey Buchbinder, LPL Financial Equity Strategist said, "A compromise on a big stimulus package in Washington could potentially deliver another October surprise, but the odds are against it as Election Day approaches."

    Highlights

    • The Wall Street Journal reported that Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is in advanced talks to acquire Xilinx (XLNX) in a deal that could be valued at more than $30 billion. Millennials Make Tons Of Money On Their New Favorite Stock

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 08:25 AM PDT

    https://www.investors.com/etfs-and-funds/sectors/sp-500-millennials-making-tons-money-their-new-favorite-stock/

Consumer discretionary Tesla (TSLA) dethroned information technology giant Apple (AAPL) as the most popular stock held by millennials. Apple got bounced from the top spot after holding it for four-straight quarters, says a just-released quarterly analysis from Apex Clearing, a custody and stock clearing firm. Apex studies more than 1.5 million investment accounts held by people aged 31 years old, on average.

And while many might criticize these young investors, they're laughing all the way to the bank. Tesla shares are up 409% this year. That blows away the "buy-and-hold" crowd who are up just 6.7% with the S&P 500. Tesla even makes Apple's 56.6% gain this year look so-so. And millennials are the only major generation to make Tesla their top holding. It's No. 2 for Generation Z and Gen X and No. 3 for baby boomers.

Millennials are making money on all but two of their top 10 holdings. And not by just a little. The average year-to-date gain on millennials' top 10 holdings is more than 80%. But to put that into perspective: That's even better than S&P 500 component Amazon.com's (AMZN) 73% rise this year. Very few stocks pull that off.

With the estimated potential value of about $36.3 billion by 2027 of telepsychiatry market, do you think the expansion could be feasible?

Weed stocks surge as Kamala Harris vows to decriminalize pot in debate

    Posted: 08 Oct 2020 09:44 PM PDT

(Reuters) - U.S.-listed shares of major cannabis producers surged on Thursday after Democratic vice president nominee Kamala Harris said marijuana would be decriminalized at a federal level in the United States under a Biden administration.

During Wednesday night's debate with Vice President Mike Pence, Harris said she and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden would also expunge the criminal records of people convicted of marijuana-related offences in the past.

Cannabis stock tracker MJ ETF (MJ.P) rose 5.5% to mark its best session since early June, while Tilray Inc (TLRY.O) jumped 19.2% on the Nasdaq. U.S.-listed shares of Canopy Growth Corp (WEED.TO), Aphria Inc (APHA.TO) and Aurora Cannabis Inc (ACB.TO) closed between 10% and 13% higher.

Even though many U.S. states have legalized marijuana use, banks and other traditional financial institutions have so far largely refused to work with the industry as cannabis is still a classified substance at the federal level.

"Access to safe banking will transform the industry, freeing up capital markets for investment and reducing the risk of operating a cannabis business," said Keith Cich, co-founder of cannabis-related products manufacturer Sunderstorm Inc.

Regulatory issues have also restricted cash availability for companies in the nascent sector at a time when they are struggling with a lack of profitability due to high costs.

"From a business perspective, (decriminalization) will level the playing field by allowing companies to expense normal operational costs instead of being taxed on gross profit," said Sam Armenia, vice president at producer C21 Investments Inc (CXXI.CD).

Harris, who has supported cannabis decriminalization even before Biden picked her as his running mate, is the lead sponsor of the Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment and Expungement (MORE) Act of 2019, which sought to end federal prohibition of marijuana.

Intel vs AMD: which is a better buy and why?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 09:21 AM PDT

so yeah, which do you think will have a better 2020? intel seems to be having a very rough and volatile 2020, while AMD seems to be on the rise. Also, the dip today seems like a good opportunity to buy in. If you had to choose between intel and AMD, which company would you rather put your money into and why?

GME short squeeze: did already happen?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 01:41 PM PDT

"Short squeezes result when short sellers of a stock move to cover their positions, purchasing large volumes of stock relative to the market volume. Since covering their positions involves buying shares, the short squeeze causes a further rise in the stock's price."

So price is GME went up 44% on Thursday. Today it opened red, then went green reaching 14.5, then it went down again and closed 10%. Did the short squeeze already happen during the day, when it went up to 14.5? Or it has to happen? What do you guys think?

    Sectors you're bullish on

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 08:48 AM PDT

I mostly don't trust myself to beat the market with my own stock picks (based on experience, though thankfully the difference isn't too huge), but I do like the idea of sector ETFs. It just seems like it should be easier to predict which sectors will outperform the overall market rather than pick individual winners and avoid losers. That was my thinking on clean energy when I bought ACES in May, anyway, and so far it's paid off with an amazing 70% return.

Any other sectors you guys are bullish on (thinking long-term, in my case)? I'm still keeping about half of my Roth IRA in an S&P 500 index fund just because I don't want to mess with my retirement too much, but what do you think I should add to the other half to try to beat it?

    Workhorse USPS bid

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 10:16 AM PDT

Yesterday, I saw several articles stating that several short sellers have opened positions expecting WKHS to flop on its 8B dollar bid with USPS, causing the stock to fall. Today, I noticed Roth Capital came out and said that they expect them to get the bid, causing a 4% increase. Is there any substantial evidence on either side, or is it mostly speculation? Would love to hear your thoughts on this. My understanding is that they may struggle to produce at the capacity required for the bid, but if USPS is considering them there is probably something there.

    Thoughts on NVTA

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 10:46 AM PDT

    Fellas,

    So I bought a tiny little position ($569.71) in NVTA on 9/23 @ $40.69.

It's now at $54.02, I'm up 32.75% or $186.29 at the time I'm writing this post.

I'm super pissed off at myself for not putting more money in... I had more cash, I just didn't buy more... Now I'm just constantly thinking what if I put more money in and how much more I'd be up... How do you stop this thinking? Should I just be happy with my gains even though they're smaller than they could've been?

Also - Should I just pile more money into this stock? I'm in it for the long haul but I feel so silly putting more money in at the tippy top and averaging up.

    Lemme hear your thoughts!

    Forget the Diversification Strategy

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 01:07 PM PDT

So, I realized that having money allocated in like 15 different stocks is probably not the best idea for getting the best returns. It's hard because there are plenty of promising stocks out there. I have 17K in one of my portfolios. I was thinking of concentrating my portfolio into 3 different positions: I'm thinking of AAPL, MSFT, and one other (preferably one DOW stock for the sake of diversification). First off, what do you guys think about this strategy? Second of all, I would like to hear some recommendations on the DOW stock. Nike and Walmart are at the top of my list at the moment.

I found a Norwegian cleantech company that will multiply investments

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 04:23 AM PDT

I just read an article on Seeking Alpha on Quantafuel. It was a surprise to me that it isn't yet known in the States. Quantafuel is a big name here in the Nordics. They don't have competition yet, and they have on-going cooperation with BASF, the biggest chemical producer in the world. Definitely still undervalued.

Start by googling the Seeking Alpha analysis about Quantafuel from a few days ago.

The price is now 58 NOK, around 6 USD. Next week they will be releasing information about their first plant's production, and the price might jump straight to over 100NOK.

One should also note that the European Union is planning a 800USD/tonne tax on plastics. That means Quantafuel can take in plastic material, AND BE PAID for taking it, while producing and selling high-grade oils for new uses.

    Google-translated from Norwegian:

" "Case significantly de-risked, target upped to 200
We reiterate our Buy recommendation on QFUEL and increase our target price to NOK200
from NOK50 per share. Over the last month, the investment case has been significantly derisked with 1) the first plant commencing production in Denmark, 2) the output quality
being well within the expected range for BASF, and 3) QFUEL has raised c.NOK850m
(c.USD95m) in two private placements resulting in a strong balance sheet. Going forward,
the investment case will be all about growth, as we estimate that each new facility will have
a very attractive ROE of >100% and a payback time of two years (USD100m capex and at
least USD50m EBITDA). QFUEL targets to have 6 facilities in operation by 2023, and if we
assume 50% ownership, the current share price of NOK66 is equivalent to a P/E of 6.4x. We
find QFUEL highly attractive given the company's rapid growth opportunities with sound
economy, proprietary technology, ESG profile and three world class strategic partners.
    • Growth at highly attractive plant economics – Two years payback time
Together with Vitol, world's largest oil trader, QFUEL has already commenced
feasibility studies of two large scale facilities (100,000t plastic waste per year) in
Antwerp and Amsterdam, and QFUEL aims to have 6 facilities in operation by 2023.
We estimate that a plant cost approximately USD100m, and contributes with an
EBITDA above USD50m, resulting in a highly attractive payback time of less than two
years. If we take it one step further and assume 60% debt financing at 5% interest, the
estimated net profit of c.USD40m gives an unparalleled ROE above 100%.
    • QFUEL in a few years – P/E below 10x
QFUEL will probably grow for many years, and for example its strategic partner BASF
consume naphtha every year equivalent to more than 2,000 times the estimated
production capacity in Skive. Investing in just a fraction of those plants could give a
value above NOK1,000 per share, but let's focus on the short- to medium-term for
now. Thus, we assume that QFUEL reach its target to have 6 facilities in production by
2023 at the abovementioned economics. Then QFUEL is estimated to have an EBITDA
of NOK1.9bn and net profit of c.NOK1.3bn (EPS of NOK10), resulting in a highly
attractive EV/EBITDA of 5.6x and P/E of 6.4x on the current share price of NOK66.
    • Valuation – TP NOK200 equivalent to a P/E of 20x
Our target priced of NOK200 per share is equivalent to a P/E of 20x once the first 6
facilities are operational, if we assume 50% ownership. The valuation range in QFUEL
is wide given the strong growth opportunities, but we argue that it all breaks down to
one thing: if you believe QFUEL will reach anything close to estimated production
figures, the current share price is a highly attractive buying opportunity.

    -

You should look the stock up through Quantafuels native Norwegian Oslo Stock exchange, the stock isn't currently traded in US exchanges.

    Recent price targets:
    SpareBank1 200 NOK 18.09.2020
    DNB 84 NOK 08.09.2020
    Pareto 100 NOK 16.09.2020
    ARTIC SECURITIES 125 NOK 04.09.2020
    Danske Bank 131 NOK 10.09.2020
    Fearnley Securities 105 NOK 23.09.2020

SimplyWallstreet also have an article about Quantafuel, Google that.

Personally I'm a firm believer in this company, but do not get paid by anyone for presenting this. I'm not a content creator for any site.

    ARKF or FINX?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 09:50 AM PDT

Thoughts on whether ARKF or FINX would be the better EFT for Fin Tech? Or would it be better to just put my money into those Fin Tech companies, e.g. SQ, PYPL, directly? There seems to be a ton of growth in those underlying stocks, but the set-it-and-forget-it of EFTs appeals to me too. If the latter, which is better - ARFK or FINX? Or some other ETF?

Looking for Info on Upcoming Direct Listings

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 12:00 PM PDT

I am trying to find out about companies that have registered with SEC for direct listing. Searching google and NYSE website came up with upcoming IPO lists but not DL. The only thing I can think of is searching SEC for any new S-1 filings and going through them to see if the company intends to have a traditional IPO or a DL, this is obviously too much work... Any advice?
