    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Technicals Tuesday - Oct 20, 2020

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 01:06 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on technical analysis (TA), but if TA is not your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against TA here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Technical analysis (TA) uses historical price movements, real time data, indicators based on math and/or statistics, and charts; all of which help measure the trajectory of a security. TA can also be used to interpret the actions of other market participants and predict their actions.

The main benefit to TA is that everything shows up in the price (commonly known as "priced in"): All news, investor sentiment, and changes to fundamentals are reflected in a security's price.

TA can be useful on any timeframe, both short and long term.

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 03:15 AM PDT

Microsoft Corp. is teaming up with Elon Musk's SpaceX as it takes on Amazon.com Inc. in cloud-computing for space customers, the Wall Street Journal reported. Microsoft will offer services using low-orbit spacecraft being developed by SpaceX and traditional satellite fleets circling the earth at higher altitudes, the paper reported. The initiative, which is targeting commercial and government space businesses, launched on Tuesday three months after Amazon Web Services disclosed its space plans. Microsoft will also work with Luxembourg's SES SA, which operates a network of larger satellites under the brand O3b.

Here is a Market Recap for today Tues, Oct 20, 2020. Please enjoy!

    PsychoMarket Recap - Tuesday, October 20, 2020

Stocks traded higher today, with market participants hoping that lawmakers may succeed in coming to an agreement for more stimulus in the near-term.

Stocks lost some momentum in the last hour of market, but still ended the day higher overall. The Nasdaq (QQQ) finished the day 0.21%, the S&P (SPY) finished 0.38% up, and the Dow Jones (DIA) ended the day 0.35% up.

Over the weekend, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi set a deadline for today to reach a deal with the Trump administration for an additional round of stimulus before the November election. However, in an interview today, Pelosi downplayed the importance of the deadline she had set, signaling that she is willing to keep talks going. "It isn't that this day was a day that we would have a deal, it was a day that we would have our terms on the table to be able to go to the next step. Hopefully by the end of the day today, we'll know where we stand." In other words, if a bill is to be voted on and passed before the November election, terms need to be agreed and the bill written soon. Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama responded saying, "You never know what's going to happen around here at the last minute but it's getting to be toward the last minute and the clock keeps ticking away. I'm not optimistic about doing anything."

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and Pelosi are set to continue discussion regarding stimulus today at 3 p.m. easter time, as both officials make a push to come to an agreement very soon. Discussions between the pair have been ongoing for weeks but unfortunately very little progress seems to be made, grappling with disagreements on issues including state and local funding and liability protection, per the Wall Street Journal. Let's hope they are able to come to a decision.

Pres. Trump also supported the idea of a large, comprehensive stimulus package saying "I want to do it even bigger than the Democrats. Not every Republican agrees, but they will. I want to do it even bigger, because this is money going to people who did not deserve what happened to them."

    Highlights

    • The US Justice Department filed an anti-trust lawsuit against Google (GOOG) alleging that the company has unlawfully suppressed competition to maintain a monopoly in search engines by cutting off rivals from key distribution channels. • Ford Motor (F) plans to launch its self-driving commercial business in 2022 with vehicles based on the Ford Escape Hybrid crossover, the company said Tuesday. Apple Seeing Strong iPhone 12 Pro Orders in All Markets, Analyst Says

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 09:56 AM PDT

Apple appears to be seeing strong early demand for the new iPhone 12 Pro, with significant wait times for delivery in all areas. Apple introduced the new 5G-compatible iPhone 12 lineup last week.

Credit Suisse analyst Matthew Cabral writes in a research note that as of Monday—four days before consumers can actually get the new Apple (ticker: AAPL) phones—preorders look similar to those at the same point in the iPhone 11 cycle. Wait times are longer for the iPhone 12 Pro than the flagship iPhone 12 in all markets, "fitting the pattern of higher-end users more likely to buy early in the launch cycle," Cabral says.

IPhone 12 Pro demand appears highest in Asia, he notes, where wait times exceed three weeks on most models in both Japan and Hong Kong, with waits of two to three weeks in China, one to three weeks in Europe, and less than two weeks in the U.S. He says iPhone 12 base model lead times are less than a week in the U.S., while wait times in Canada, Japan, and Hong Kong are running one to two weeks. Color options to not appear to be impacting wait times, he adds.

Cabral's findings are consistent with a report yesterday from Taiwan-based analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities, who noted stronger-than-expected demand for the iPhone 12 Pro, with high levels of demand in China.

Apple began taking orders for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro last Friday, for delivery starting this Friday. Both have 6.1-inch displays. Buyers can preorder both the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 Mini and the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max starting Nov. 6.

    Selling majority of my stocks

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 04:37 PM PDT

I've been investing for a year now and I'm proud of how I've made my portfolio grow. I have two accounts, one is a brokerage and the other I transferred my 401k into (I have a city retirement fund as I work in public safety). Between the two accounts I have $16,000, evenly split between the two, and I've decided I have to sell off most of my brokerage account because I need the money to move out and buy a house. It's just such a cruddy feeling to sell off a bunch of my stocks, even though I've made profits and this is ultimately what I started to invest in for, to make profits and buy myself nice things.

But in the last year I've really become invested (pun intended) to researching companies and investing my money in them, it's become a hobby for me. This subreddit has really been awesome in learning how to cope with mistakes and how to stay strong and hold out, especially with Covid screwing up the market as much as it has.

Anyways, just needed a little rant because come tomorrow I'll be selling a few thousand in stocks, which is gonna be pretty difficult. But once I buy myself a good home I'm gonna be happy that I got into investing.

Best of luck to all of you.

I am trying to wrap my head around options.. Help!

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 11:46 AM PDT

I have read about options in past a number of times.. and think I understand. I know a guy has to be very careful with them! That is why I would like to sell a covered call.

So just pulling up the first one (expires 10-23). The Strike is $288, bid 2.60, ask 2.63.

As I understand it if I place this order I would commit to selling 100 shares at $288 between now and the 23rd. For this commitment I would receive $260 whether they sell or not. And if they sold I would get the $28,800. Is that correct?

What’s the best approach to investing for beginners?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 08:50 AM PDT

I'm 26, have around £74,000 left to pay on my mortgage on a house worth around £200,000. I have an emergency fund of six months worth of bills. My monthly expenses are 65-70% of my monthly salary and looking to get into investing. I'm very much a beginner and wondering if it's worth pursuing investing on my own, via financial advisors/brokerages etc. I'm looking to pay my mortgage off as soon as possible and to steadily build a portfolio. I have a beginner level knowledge of investing so don't want to just rush in without knowing as much as possible. A few people have told me investing in investment groups like Vanguard is worth looking at. I guess there's advantages and disadvantages to that. Thank you for any help you can provide.

    Dangers of options trading

Hello everyone. It seems like daily I'm seeing far more post of guys losing high amounts of money trading options than being successful. I only trade stocks. I have never traded options but watching YouTube tutorials it seems like it should only be to your advantage to do so. It seems like it's simply insurance. What am I missing and what are the dangers that I'm not seeing? Thanks in advance.

U.S. to Accuse Google of Protecting Illegal Monopoly

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 06:50 AM PDT

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department plans to accuse Google of maintaining an illegal monopoly over search and search advertising in a lawsuit to be filed on Tuesday, the government's most significant legal challenge to a tech company's market power in a generation, according to officials at the agency.

In its suit, to be filed in a federal court in Washington, D.C., the agency will accuse Google, a unit of Alphabet, of illegally maintaining its monopoly over search through several exclusive business contracts and agreements that lock out competition, said the officials, who were not authorized to speak on the record. Such contracts include Google's payment of billions of dollars to Apple to place the Google search engine as the default for iPhones.

The agency will argue that Google, which controls about 80 percent of search queries in the United States, struck agreements with phone makers using Alphabet's Android operating system to pre-load the search engine on their phones and make it hard for rival search engines to become a replacement. By using contracts to maintain its monopoly, competition and innovation has suffered, the suit with argue.

The suit reflects the pushback against the power of the nation's largest corporations, and especially technology giants like Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple. Conservatives like President Trump and liberals like Senator Elizabeth Warren have been highly critical of the concentration of power in a handful of tech behemoths.

Attorney General William P. Barr, who was appointed by Mr. Trump, has played an unusually active role in the investigation. He pushed career Justice Department attorneys to bring the case by the end of September, prompting pushback from lawyers who wanted more time and complained of political influence. Mr. Barr has spoken publicly about the inquiry for months and set tight deadlines for the prosecutors leading the effort.

The lawsuit may stretch on for years and could set off a cascade of other antitrust lawsuits from state attorneys general. About four dozen states and jurisdictions have conducted parallel investigations and are expected to bring separate complaints against the company's grip on technology for online advertising.

Albertson's ($ACI) up 4.5% on strong earnings beat

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 12:39 PM PDT

Albertson's beat earnings. Adjusted EPS .60 vs estimates of .27.

Digital sales up almost 250%. Sales up 1.6bn from previous year (about 10% growth).

Saw this stock hyped a bit recently as undervalued and after some DD, I agree it was/is undervalued and a good value play.

I went in long before earnings and will hold for at least a year through COVID assuming the crisis leads to less restaurant dining.

Stock seems to have settled around $15/share today. Still seems undervalued, revenue is growing and they are adding new stores, announced a dividend which indicates they are not worried about revenue and paying off their debt.

Hyliion News Recap (10/13 through 10/20)

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 01:44 PM PDT

My previous post on Hyliion due-diligence was well received. It seems that many of you are invested in HYLN and could use a news update on what's going on in the world of Hyliion. Here are some articles regarding HYLN that made their way into the news this past week.

10/13: Axioma Ventures Reveals a 10.82% Stake in HYLN

An important distinction; Axioma Ventures did not recently purchase these 16,656,790 shares. This confirms that Axioma already owns these shares. This was previously announced via Hyliion's Twitter on September 20th, 2017, but it was overlooked by many.

    Sources: https://wccftech.com/hyliion-shares-receive-a-bullish-respite-as-axioma-ventures-reveals-a-10-82-percent-stake-in-the-company/

    https://twitter.com/hyliion/status/910509555112488960

10/15: Goldman Sachs Gives HYLN a "Neutral" Rating with a Price Target of $22

HYLN is experiencing so much volatility that it's virtually impossible to predict the floor/ceiling of their current share price value. Interestingly enough the $30 put options expired the day prior to this headline hitting the papers and the stock opened pennies shy of $30 on 10/15. Conspiracy theorist? Maybe. Call me whatever you want, but if you think Wall St. isn't run on insider trading and manipulation then you're in for a reality check (case in point: JP Morgan's $41 EOY2021 price target on Nikola announced yesterday). Just another reason to despise price targets on any company. Do your own DD and set the values and targets for yourself.

    Source: https://investorplace.com/2020/07/goldman-sachs-nio-stock-overvalued-right/

10/15: Cramer (Host of Mad Money) Provides a Buy-Target at $20

Again with the price targets. That information does nothing for me. Let's dig a little deeper into Cramer's points and look for something with substance.

    Positive Statements:

    • He likes that they have a product and are a legitimate company (I assume this is a jab at Nikola Motors).
    • Owning their own battery technology is "a plus" (I don't think he's aware that the batteries belong to Toshiba and Hyliion package them and equip them with software they build in-house).
    • He "likes the story" of Hyliion and thinks the company is worth buying, albeit at a lower price than it's currently at.

    Negative Statements:

    • "Hyliion isn't an electric-vehicle play" (he's omitting the Hypertruck ERX with this statement).
    • "…Hyliion's not exactly doing something revolutionary here, as we already have trucks that run on natural gas….nobody really likes them other than some of these waste companies" (at this point I'm convinced this man's DD consists of word of mouth).
    • Concerned about the volatility of companies that follow the same acquisition procedure that HYLN followed (I was threatened with a ban the last time I circumvented the filter to lay out the details of the merger information so please do your own research regarding their merger procedure). This is a valid concern that I agree with, and I hope that the volatility drops in time.

10/15: Hyliion Announces a Partnership with American Natural Gas (ANG)

This news came out the day after I released my initial DD post, and it's very important. ANG is an industry-leading alternative fuel provider and not only did ANG pre-order up to 250 Hypertruck ERX vehicles, but they've also agreed to offer Hyliion customers discounted pricing at every ANG renewable natural gas station in the country. For qualifying fleet customers ANG has also agreed to build new fueling stations near Hyliion's customer locations with no upfront capital costs to such customers. This is absolutely massive news.

I read through this hoping that it'd provide me with some good counter-points to investing in HYLN because I believe that finding the shortcomings of a company is more important than knowing the potential it has for the future. I was disappointed to find that the article is riddled with incorrect information, countless grammatical errors and unreliable sources (lots of "he said she said"). The disclaimer at the very end of the report specifically mentions that the entire report "expresses solely our opinions" and that they stand to profit from HYLN stock price dropping (hence, shorting company). I won't be breaking down the entire report as there are several YouTube videos that accomplish just that. I'm happy to provide the links to those videos directly to anyone interested via PM (r/stocks doesn't allow for YouTube links to be posted).

10/17: Motley Fool Publishes a Positive Merger Article, Specifically Mentioning HYLN

Motley Fool mentions that Nikola Motor's fall has turned people away from special merger companies as a whole, but specifically mentions HYLN as one of the few merger companies that remain a diamond in the rough. The article features nothing short of positive notions toward HYLN. A key point that they make is Hyliion's ability not to disrupt the current trucking businesses but rather to help shift the current-existing technology and OEMs into the modern day/future of renewable energy with their hybrid conversion technology. I only wish that they spoke about the Hypertruck ERX, which certainly can be argued as disruptive technology.

10/19: Modern Transportation Begin Test Drive of the Diesel Hybrid Technology

Not much to say here besides some potentially positive PR. Looking forward to their review.

10/19: C.A.T Transport Testing HYLN Hybrid Product with Five Trucks

C.A.T has approximately 100 trucks in their fleet, they're testing Hyliion's hybrid solution on five trucks to determine if they will fit the rest of their fleet with the same technology. The article states that C.A.T is also interested in Hyliion's Hypertruck ERX, beginning delivery next year.

And there you have it. A week's worth of great news and a week's worth of price drops. No, I don't know why it's happening. What I do know is that generally when something is sold so heavily day after day despite positive news, then time to buy is around the corner. Plan one step ahead of the market, and happy trading, everyone.

$20K to invest - Need advice on stock to buy

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 01:19 PM PDT

I'm not sure this is a great time to get in on a lot of stocks. I was thinking of just going with blue chip (AAPL, GOOGL, AMAZON, MSFT). They all seem to be riding high though. I can always wait for a sell off but it seems they just keep running.

    • Are there any high growth stocks you recommend?
    • What are some under the radar stocks you see that have high potential?

Is the market exhibiting “irrational exuberance”?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 10:32 AM PDT

I do my best to set aside any notion of being bullish or bearish, and wonder if the global market is reflecting something deeply and fundamentally unrealistic. Of course, there are a myriad of approaches one may take to analyzing this question. My intuition (for what that's worth) tends toward the thought that there is a profound disconnect between the markets and conditions on the ground.

Some say that the numbers are the numbers. Some say that the market "prices in" all prospects and sentiments.

The real global financial powerhouses make billions of dollars with fantastically complex algorithms, trading millions of shares per second on fractions of a penny.

    Where does that leave us?

What is a good entry point for cn?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 07:09 AM PDT

Been looking at this stock for a while and it just keeps going up. (Canadian National Railway)

People were telling me its overvalued at 125, then at 130, now its 145 about to break 150.

When is a good point to enter? Those saying its over valued, when do you think itll correct itself?

ER is coming up soon, think itll crash after that and its a good time to get in? Ive read they are expecting to beat their estimate, would that mean itll keep going up though?

    TWLO a buy before earnings?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 12:53 PM PDT

I think Twilio has had some pretty good progress during the pandemic. One quarter was profitable, all other quarters are beating expectations, so things look pretty solid for the future. I think the 40% runnup for their profitable earnings was a little too much, but I still don't see this dipping far below. I'm targeting around 340 after earnings, probably around a 10% uptick if better than expect results. It had a crazy runnup though, which is a little concerning, but I do see their customer base only growing than shrinking in the near future. Looks like it was unnecessarily hit today, like WORK or any other WFH stock. Thoughts?

    Sell ZS

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 12:39 PM PDT

ARK has removed ZS entirely from ARKW and 48% out of ARKF. I'm up big on ZS and I'm thinking it'd be wise to follow their lead. So my next question is where I should reallocate the funds. Thinking about adding/starting positions in PTON, LMND, OKTA, NVDA. For context im a growth investor with a horizon of 5-10+ years. What do you think? Any other suggestions?

Why is WKHS down 6% today?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 10:26 AM PDT

Although news has been slow, it has been steady and generally positive.

I know there was recent news of GM converting a factory to produce electric cars, could this be why WKHS is down? How would that affect the stock price?

Tesla is down some, is WKHS down in sympathy?
