[ADVICE] Tech co-founder quit but we got accepted to Y Combinator W21 final interview. Need help!

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 05:54 PM PDT

Hi, I need some advice on navigating tough setbacks.

Our B2B SaaS startup got accepted to the YC W21 final interview in Dec but my tech co-founder decided to quit not long ago due to work visa issues. There's a lot of things we planned to accomplish by the interview date that's now unlikely. The tech isn't in any usable condition and I'm scrambling to find another CTO cofounder to get development back on track. The back-up plan is to hire a freelancer to complete a usable UI and get it in front of our customers ASAP (startup is post-revenue with 6 customers). I feel that sales and growth might just have to take a back-seat until I find someone to fill my missing half in the meantime. Thoughts? Any feedback on strategy? 😬

Secrets to cheap bandwidth/data from AWS?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 01:39 PM PDT

Our content management system is built on AWS EC2 and we're starting to see some fairly heavy usage, which will likely grow.

We were in the process of migrating one product from another service that charged us every month, then realized that on bandwidth alone we'd be losing money.

AWS publishes a price of $0.09 per GB, but that seems really high compared to numbers I see on other services out there. Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance! This is not my area of expertise :)

URGENT — my startup is growing too fast

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 01:13 AM PDT

This sounds like an odd issue, but my startup is going too quick. I am doing the entire backend work by hand. I initially launched with the goal of getting some traction, and then paying a developer to complete the backend alongside a proof of traction. My company has ballooned to 9,000 users and I'm physically unable to both develop the front end and maintain my customers. I'm a college student and I have an exam tomorrow which I haven't studied for because I'm busy with handling customers. I'm in need of urgent help. How can I solve this and stay on top of customer support.

Should I get 1 in house developer or an outsourced freelancer for a quarter of the cost?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 07:20 AM PDT

Solo founder here from a programming background. Self funded startup.

In my country developers are extremely expensive to hire. For the price of 1 developer I could get a freelancer for a quarter of the cost.

I realise there are pro's and con's to outsourced freelancers. Mostly the cons are concerns quality, but since I'm a programmer, and I'm building the infrastructure myself, I can code review these freelancers and determine the quality of their work, in order to decide if I should keep them or not.

I really want to offload the programming workload as soon as I can afford it, so I can focus more on the business and marketing side of things.

Curious what you guys think, and what your experiences are if you had this decision to make yourself. Why did you choose the way you did?

    Any insights is appreciated.

What are some free resources by different countries for startups and small businesses?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 01:21 AM PDT

What are some free resources by different countries for startups and small businesses which can help them to start or grow for free?

Reading posts in starup communities sounds like lots of American new entrepreneurs don't know about sba.gov ( they provide free lawyer, accounting, hr etc sponsored by government to help small businesses) and score.org (volunteer based network different skills ) .

Lets create list of all similar organizations world wide so it can be helpful for everyone. Please if you know any share with all of us include the country as well

Negotiating equity as an early employee

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 06:50 PM PDT

Startup just raised a series A.

Context: I'm a new grad potentially joining as the 7th employee (bizops) of a saas startup. I could either lower my salary to increase my equity, or vice versa. But I'd like to raise my equity stake if possible without having to sacrifice pay. How should I negotiate with the founder?

Finally ready to look for funding...

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 12:44 PM PDT

Some questions. First, background- we're almost 6 years in and so far we've bootstrapped our company. We are hitting our stride and do quite well. 567 on this years Inc 5000 list, profitable, and in a massive market (health/wellness).

From conversations I've had it seems we might be pretty attractive to the right vc's because of the potential and already proven track record. We turned down a sale and an investment already since we weren't ready but now we are and we're looking to potentially sell a portion of the business for a cash out/investment. Thinking 10-25%. Not totally sure though. This can depend on valuation.

As of now we haven't done paid marking and we don't even have a sales team. We just sell to people through word of mouth so we're gearing up to finally grow with purpose.

The big needs are...Business development (sales team). Paid marketing .Training/development for the team .Tech (we have our own application that was outsourced but might need internal staff)

My question is on where to begin. I know, it's broad but I love talking with some people who might have experience. I have a few contacts but I'm not quite sure what the next steps are. I remember a post a few weeks back with contacts for vc's so maybe that's a good start if I can dig it up.

I've cruised around Y Combinator and learned a bit but I always loved hearing from you all. I do some investing on my own but I'm very "raw" to this formal approach and appreciate any insight.

Working 10h per day for clients and developing startups after hours - do I want to kill myself? What should I do?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 11:54 AM PDT

Hello guys, I have been developing own projects for 5 years. None of them become profitable yet. I went away from job for 9 months recently to develop one idea which I believed in. Failed.

Now I went to 2x better paid full time job B2B (8 hours a day) and found client for 2 hours a day also B2B where I have got 3x better hourly rate than the first client. I am remote PM.

So, this is amazing cash for me since I was earning 3x less but I feel tired working 7am to 5pm and trying to develop my startups. I feel like it does not give any long term value for me. For my startups for sure. I feel like I should focus on getting investors maybe for my startups, keep fulltime job (boss is amazing businessman, I learn a lot from him) and dump 2h job since the boss become pain in the ass and I am tired. He requires a lot.

Good money is great but my gut tells me to develop startups and does not count on short time earnings...

What do you think? I would appreciate, thanks.

    What should I do?

How important is location for a startup?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 02:24 PM PDT

Is there any situation where it's a smart decisions to move states to start a start up? For instance, Seattle has a lot of the big tech companies (Amazon, Microsoft, google) etc. if I had a tech start up would it be a good decision to start there rather than a state with a smaller tech economy?

    [Advice] Splitting Equity Among CoFounders?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 02:21 PM PDT

    Hello r/startups community!

I come to you humbly asking for your advice on a topic that I'd consider "sticky". I want to be sure I'm making the right decision, so hopefully some of you guys have encountered this issue before!

I had an inkling of an idea that I decided to pursue a few months ago, and today my team and I are preparing for our initial beta (whoop!). Currently all progress, work, and IP is safely under my company's (note: not the startup/idea, my "day job" company; owned by me) ownership. At this point, I am ready to actually form an LLC around the idea, split up equity, and potentially raise some money.

I have two cofounders (one full-time, the other part-time hoping to become full-time) that have joined me on the initial validation, MVP planning and building, etc. Basically they have been with me since (close to) the beginning. I have paid both of them a very decent hourly rate (comparable to what I pay myself) throughout the entire process (no one EVER worked for free). All funding has come directly from my own pocket as of now.

My question is: How much equity should I be offering my CoFounders at this stage in the game? How much is too much? How much is too little? I desperately want to compensate them fairly for their work and keep them motivated to continue working on the company, however I also want to ensure that I'm not short changing myself.

Any advice is very much appreciated!
    Thanks.

    How to find local cofounders?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 05:57 PM PDT

What's the best way to find a local cofounder or cofounders? I've got an MVP that saves business buyers in the packing industry a ton of time I'm in my mid 20s and this is my first real project. It's been great for personal use and I've had minor organic traffic. It started as a learning project solving a problem I personally had sourcing materials. Worked wonderfully, and now I'm at the point where I'd like to grow the tool into a business. While r/startups and other sources have been great, and I've been learning quickly, I feel that the journey would be so much better with a team. I think we could get to the final goal quicker and hopefully encourage and support each other along the way. That being said I'm finding it incredibly difficult to find someone local, for me in the Portland area, that is reliable, willing to work hard, and can compliment my skill set. Where have you found the best places to network are? Also have you found having a cofounder or team is a help or hinderance in the very early stage? Thank you for any and all feedback!

Payment Processors vs Setting Up Own Merchant Account & Payment Gateway

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 06:31 PM PDT

    Hi

Hopefully I'm explaining this right, apologies if not!

Stripe, Paypal, Braintree etc are payment processors which are essentially the payment gateway i.e. the access to the card networks to accept payment and then the merchant account where they store the payment before sending it to your bank.

Is there any case in which a startup would not go with a third party payment processor such as Stripe, Paypal etc and just set up their own merchant account and payment gateway API to connect to the card networks? Are there startups doing the latter and at what stage would it be a consideration?

Supply and Demand model for App

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 05:43 PM PDT

I am the founder/ceo of an app startup. It is an app where people can exchange odd jobs and tasks for money or they can barter. So, I need users who will post jobs. It is easy finding people who will complete them, but not post. Does anyone have advice for this app model/structure?

Website, blog and community (possible mercy sales down the road)

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 01:39 PM PDT

For starters this is a full on DIY, bootstrap, kinda passion project right now. Very little background in web design, Wordpress, SEO or site monetization. However, I'm a fast learner and also know that nothing is ever perfect, so it's better to launch and then improve versus wait for perfection.

My site is 40% built out right now and I am mainly focused on adding content. Using a simple (free) wp theme and am happy so far. My two big questions are...

    1. If I do get a decent amount of traffic, what are the best ways to keep the cost of hosting and data needs in check? I don't know what I don't know or should be concerned with.

    2. What are some possible revenue sources to start with? Can anyone make money on a site anymore? Reddit is massive traffic, but how do the monetize. Millions of freeloaders like me don't buy gold to give away.

The site idea is pretty simple. Create a community type site around a trending lifestyle.

Help improving our business as we go full time

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 01:36 PM PDT

Straight after college, myself and four others founded an animation business. It's been going a year now, and ticks along nicely though we all have other jobs. The decision to make the business right out of college has pros and cons - there's less risk as none of us have families or massive investments, so the business has been made for free essentially, but also we have a small web of professional contacts inside the industry, since none of us have been part of it.

Regardless, we survived COVID which is great, and we're transitioning from our part time jobs to full time at the company. I just wanted to know about people who have gone through this process, and what advice they would give to make the transition as smooth as possible. I'm the first to go full time, and am largely in charge of finding new clients so it makes the most sense.

Beyond that, I'd love to know some advice from people that run service-based companies. What we offer is capped by our manpower, so we've never been able to run at max capacity because we've had other jobs. We don't offer a product, subscription or automated service, so money is entirely active and directly tied to the work we do. Work comes in, we do it, we get paid. In the year we've existed I've realised we're not a very 'sticky' business, there's no insensitive to come back to us once we've made a film for the client. We've also not really specialised in a specific gap in the market yet - finding a usp in the arts industry is generally easier because by default the work we do stands apart from our competitors, but in a general sense, we make the same work as lots of other companies. I've seen opportunities to capitalize on a gap in the market, but we don't have the time, money or manpower to risk that yet.

In general I wanted to share a bit about us and wanted to see if there were other art/service-based businesses around that could offer some advice. Cheers!

    When is a idea unvalidated?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 07:22 AM PDT

I have an idea for an app made for barbers. So i did my research but i see that already a lot of barbers are using a website what my idea is. But the website ui/ux is terrible and there is 1 app who does the same thing but also has a terrible ui/ux.

The thing is, barbers are using it. What can i do now? Just move on or create a survey and send it to barbers?

Simplifying HR/Scheduling as we expand -- any software you love?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 10:53 AM PDT

My company hires delivery drivers in shifts and we are expanding rapidly, making all of the scheduling even more complicated and tedious. Similarly, we've been using Google Forms to document employee issues, but it's not as streamline as I would like.

Does anyone love the software/apps that your company uses? Ideally, I would like to do both scheduling and employee management/HR things in once place, bonus points if I can divide employees into different branches.

    Thank you!

Any advice on improving sales and traffic during lockdown?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 09:09 AM PDT

I've been running my jewellery business online for a while and I didn't have a lot of money to start with but it got to the point where I could afford to buy and expand my stock and range of items I offer.

Since Covid though it seems to have just plummeted. I only receive about 35% of the sales I used to get before the virus. I introduced new products and promoted the hell out of it on IG and such but I just cant seem to get the sales volume and visiting traffic to ebay/etc

Have I been doing something wrong? This is the first time I've had a setback like this and I just cant seem to put it right.

I mean I guess people aren't leaving the house much so jewellery doesn't seem so important but loads of people buy stuff online when they are stuck home indoors.

    Regards, Michael

Have you tried public speaking for promoting your startup business? What are your goals in the realm of public speaking?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 11:10 AM PDT

I've seen a lot of people with fine product or services change their life with public speaking and some people with great service and products but can't even get a little bit of attention from the market. What are your thoughts on this? Is that something you have done it before and paid off or you want to do it in future? How are you preparing for this? I'm curious if someone is using social media to get good at this skill.

Can there privacy friendly social networks be profitable?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 02:41 AM PDT

There are big social networks which are free but earn by tracking and serving ads.

Can there exists a social network which is privacy friendly no tracking, no ads but subscription based ($3-5/mo)?

As I know there is a company that competes with biggest social network in the space. But they seems to backed by VCs and have free plan with subscription. But I do not know about the state of the company, profitable or not?

If anyone have experience with this kind an idea, please share your experience.
