Please use this thread to have discussions which you don't feel warrant a new post to the sub. While the Rules for posting questions on the basics of personal finance/investing topics are relaxed a little bit here, the rules against memes/spam/self-promotion/excessive rudeness/politics still apply!

Have a look at the FAQ for this subreddit before posting to see if your question is frequently asked.

Since this post does tend to get busy, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

When do you limit 401k contributions?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 02:58 PM PDT

I've been saving 10%+ to my 401k (plus company match) for over 10 years. If I plan to retire well before 65, when would you pivot away from this to more flexible investments that can be accessed in your 50s? There's only so much you need in a 401k account, right?

To be clear, I'm investing in other assets already. Just wondering when/what amount (if ever) it makes sense to reduce 401k?

How much money should you hold in cash and how much should you have invested?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 02:53 PM PDT

I am starting to get greedy because I keep getting bullish on the stock market. I have a good amount in an emergency fund in high yield savings. But I have been investing a significant amount each month in stocks/Total stock market index fund.

After all my expenses, barely anything goes into my savings. So in terms of percentages, how much should you keep in cash and how much should you have invested?
