Car exploded next to my car... what the heck do i do now?!

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 07:39 AM PDT

EDIT/UPDATE: Thanks to you all for your great responses! My insurance company was able to look up the drivers insurance policy after I gave them the plate number. I filed a claim with Libtery Mutual, and have been assigned some person who will investigate the claim. Also, I got the police report number which, I was told, will be ready in a few days time. Thanks for helping me get the ball rolling!!!!!! It all seems obvious now, but Ive never had to file a claim before and had no idea how the process worked. Thanks again!

Here is a pic My car

    Today's damage

    Hello all,

Last night, a speeding car crashed into a building and exploded. Sadly, the driver died.

Unfortunately, my car was parked adjacent to the accident site. My entire passenger side of the car has melted.

I dont have collision coverage on this car (its an old 02 Hyundai Sante Fe). I called the local precinct and have an accident report # but nothing else and no other information.

I just dont know what to do here. The car is currently undriveable, and its parked on the street. I filed a claim on my insurances website, but, yea, Im not sure what to do. Any advice would be amazing.

    Thank you all!

Am I 100% At Fault For This?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 03:48 PM PDT

I had some work done on my car and when the mechanic was finished he parked it behind his car. I didn't realize that he had left it in gear when he turned it off and when I started my car it jerked forward and hit his car and did some damage to his bumper and muffler. Is this my fault completely?

Question about cashing in second check

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 01:55 AM PDT

Hi everyone! I was wondering if I am allowed to cash in a check from a third party travel insurance company when I already received a refund from the airline directly

    Context:

Earlier in the year, I made plans to travel to out of the country, but COVID happened and I had to get a refund from Expedia. Before booking the flight, I made sure to buy the Travel Guard insurance, and I thought if anything happens, I would get a refund from Travel Guard. However, both Expedia and Travel Guard denied my refund. I didn't get a refund from the official airline until the airline declared that there would be no international travels. After a week of waiting, the payment was originally returned back to my credit card.

Flash forward 2 months later, I got a check from Travel Guard with the same amount of money that I spent for the airline ticket. Since this check was issued from travel guard, and not the directly from the airline, what should I do with it? Is this considered "free" money or should I just toss this check into the shredder to avoid any trouble?

TLDR: Got a refund from the airlines, but months later I also got a refund from the 3rd party insurance company I paid a small fee for. What should I do now?

    Thanks in advance for reading!

Got Rear Ended now All State says my Car is Totalled!

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 05:49 PM PDT

This is one of my first posts, Im 20 and havent had an accident before. I just need a bit of advice on what is going on...

In the end of September I got rear-ended pretty hard in my 2005 volkswagen beetle. My beetle was drivable but damaged in the back with the lights busted out and a dent in the back with my tow hook bent down. So, I filed the insurance claim and got a police report, the other driver had All State. It took All State until last week to decide they were taking 100% liability after I had to email and fax the report, and I took my car to one of their shops. My car has been at the shop since last Thursday, I've been checking in and the shop kept saying "All State has to approve the estimate" until I called today and they said I could contact All State. So I did, and they said the estimate could cause the car to be classified as totalled, which is scary to hear. I only bought my car two years ago and it is an amazing car and I love it. They told me to call them on Monday and check to see if it is classified as totalled. I just want my car fixed because their policy member hit me and I don't want to lose my car because of it. What should I do? Do I have to accept they're totalling it or do I have a way to just get my car fixed?

    I appreciate the help!

Update: Thank you guys a lot! I've never gotten into an accident before, so this is a learning experience and I appreciate everyone helping me understand. My car is super old, but all I ever wanted was a Beetle and it was my dream car so I was a little bit upset, but now I know that's just the name of the game when it comes to insurance and getting it fixed/totaled! It was just a surprise for my baby brain when they told me it was totalled because I drove it home afterwards, but now I get it. Thanks guys!!

My vehicle was deemed a total Loss but is totally fine to drive - Missouri

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 11:35 PM PDT

I am in a very interesting situation. About a month ago a woman hit me and she was determined at fault and her insurance cover decided to cover my damages in full. I took it to a shop that works with them and the estimate was super high, in my opinion.. They determined it to be 78% of the cars value deeming it a total loss. However, the car is completely driveable. It needed a new headlight assembly which I've already put in myself. Other than that its purely cosmetic.

It's a 2008 scion tc with 169,000 miles on it. I own the vehicle outright, no lien. I decided to take the payout minus the salvage value. My question is, do I actually need to get a salvage title in Missouri for this? I can't find any straight info on the department of revenues website. Also, I did a VIN search and nothing comes up for my vehicle in terms of total loss declarations or salvage branding.

The thing that makes this even more complicated is that today I got rear ended in the same damn car and the insurance company that paid me last time is the same as the woman who rear ended me (state farm). My question overall is what should I do and how are they going to handle a collision wherein it involves a car they already have listed as totaled?

Does Missouri allow you to drive a vehicle with a salvage title? I realize it's more a matter of if the insurance company will cover you. I haven't had my insurance say anything and I'm considering switching to only liability on the car at this point anyway since my car is worth nothing now. If anyone has any insight on what insurance companies do cover salvaged vehicles, I would appreciate it. I currently have Travelers.

    Thank you!

Travel Insurance- How can I get MEDICAL coverage for COVID in The US during my stay there?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 11:09 PM PDT

I am a US citizen but have not lived in the US for 5 years, therefore, I have ZERO US insurance coverage. This has all been fine, as I annually purchase a travel policy that covers me for emergency medical when I am in The US- and I have a regular (very good) health insurance policy that covers me in The EU where I live. Fast Forward to now- Covid times: My travel policy expired and the insurer told me that they are no longer writing insurance due to Covid. My health insurance will not cover me in The US, and sadly- my 93 y/o mother has just gotten extremely ill. I may have to go back to The US. What does anyone who knows anything about insurance advise? The travel policies that I can get now seem to exclude Covid, or exclude The US. Any guidance is appreciated. PS- I am 59 and uninsurable due to prior cancer.

[KY] Rear ended earlier this week, was quoted 14.3k to fix, possible total instead?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 10:34 PM PDT

So I was rear ended earlier this week, my insurance ruled me not at fault, we didn't involve the police. So I took my car to get quoted for repairs and was informed, after the tear down they did, that it would be 14.3k to fix it. I checked KBB and if it were in the excellent category, with the miles it has, it books for no more than 18.5k. On a good day. I was informed I would have to wait until Monday on an answer as to wether they would total the car or further review whatever it was they had planned to do. Is there anything I can do to try to ask if they will just total it out? I don't hate my car but I have gap (not through my insurance provider) and rolled about 10k of N.E. onto it and it would get me out of it.

    Flooring damaged from dishwasher leak

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 09:51 PM PDT

I recently noticed that our hardwood has starting discoloring and buckling. After having a plumber check for leaks, it was determined that we must have damaged the floor by washing with too much water. However, I finally caught the Dishwasher in the act today and noticed it was leaking.

I immediately filed a claim with my home owners insurance company (Hippo), but came here to ask a few questions:

    1. Is this type of damage typically covered by home owners insurance?
    2. If so, would the insurance company typically replace the flooring or just patch it?
    3. Can I replace the dishwasher while I wait for the claim to be processed? I really need a dishwasher in these crazy times as we mainly eat at home.

    Question about dropped home coverage

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 02:33 PM PDT

    Hi,

My wife and I own a vacation home in Massachusetts (US).

There was a pretty serious fire at the home about 6 months ago. The frame of the house is still intact, but pretty much everything else needs to be rebuilt.

We have insurance and we have been working with the adjuster for several months (going back and forth about the funds for various aspects of rebuilding).

Yesterday, we got a letter from the insurer stating that they were dropping our coverage in one month due to "failure to comply with recommendations"

Does anyone know what this could possibly mean? Is it possible that there was too much back-and-forth haggling over settlement funds w/ the adjuster or is it something else?

    Thank you.

Just was dropped from my house insurance because my house is classified as an “Earth Home”

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 04:38 PM PDT

Any recommendations? Companies that cover earth homes?

Just moved into new house. Been with the insurance company for 40 years.

When I first moved in about a month ago, they said I was all good, then only just now changed their minds!

    My house is part subterranean

I think my car may have flooded? There is mold growing in it. Does insurance cover that?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 05:01 PM PDT

This is such a weird thing. My backyard floods often. House is untouched but the water can get kinda high (~20 inches) and I park my car in the driveway. I'm afraid water may have gotten in the wheel wells or lower parts of the car as there is now mold growing on the vinyl seats in my car...

What kind of benefit is there to filing a claim instead of just paying to repair the car myself?

Thinking about switching to Esurance over USAA

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 04:19 PM PDT

So quick back story. I'm currently with USAA and I'm thinking about switching due to low coverage and high cost, in addition my 6 month policy just increased by nearly $200 for reasons they couldn't specify other than "statewide increase". Not cool.

I've been shopping around and Esurance seems to be the best deal and among the higher rated choices, I'm getting quoted a lot of coverage for a price I'm very happy with. Problem is, I'm kinda hesitant to switch when I found articles from last year stating Esurance was going to be disbanded and operated under the Allstate brand. I know Allstate does own them tho.

Was wondering if anyone knows if that is still going to happen, Allstate seems okay but for whatever reason Esurance seems to have higher reviews.

Anyone have any really negative experiences with Esurance or reasons I shouldn't consider them over USAA?

What does non-covered discounts mean with Anthem Vision insurance?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 04:12 PM PDT

We are weighing insurance options via employer, and one option is Anthem Blue View Vision using the Insight Network. When looking about contact providers, I see several online providers are listed such as ContactsDirect, Lenscrafters, and Glasses.com. They are listed as In Vision Network, but under Services available, it just lists "Non-covered discounts." By contrast, listed optometrist offices not only list the expected exams, but they also include frames as well as lenses and contacts.

If we selected this insurer, would we be able to order contacts from the aforementioned locations using our in-network contacts allowance, or do they just offer some kind of discount program to Anthem members? We are currently with VSP.

Much appreciation to anyone who can provide some insight!

    Health insurance question (Dental)

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 03:58 PM PDT

I have to get all four of my wisdom teeth extracted. They told me that the estimated out of pocket cost is $1,600, but it could be higher. I can't afford that.

    Is this correct?

Is there anything I can do to get this lowered?

Do I need to declare a head unit change to my insurance provider?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 03:28 PM PDT

Basically - I'm going to change my shitty non touch screen - no Bluetooth - standard head unit to a more modern head unit with touch screen / GPS / Bluetooth / etc...

Would I need to declare this to my insurance provider? I'm fitting it in myself and it's costing £300 for the head unit in whole. It isn't as expensive.

Would my insurance provider require me to tell them about this as I've read online and people have said this doesn't count as a high modification, and that it wouldn't affect my insurance. The only thing that it could affect is that if someone broke in, and stole the new head unit, I won't be able to open a claim for it. - I don't really give a shit if that's the case.. just want to know if it would stop my insurance from paying me out if I was in an accident / car was stolen.

Neighbor dented my parked car. Should I file a claim?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 02:59 PM PDT

    Hello,

So just to preface, I'm 26 and I've never had to file a claim before or really been in any situation like this so I'm not exactly sure how to proceed.

I was at home when my neighbor knocked on my door and told me she hit my car. My car was parked on the road and it turns out she bumped into it when backing out of her driveway. It left a minor dent and scratch about 4 inches wide on the rear passenger door.

Both of us stating we've never really been in this situation before she promptly called her insurance company and filed a claim. I briefly talked to her insurance on the phone to give them some info on the damages, and they gave me a phone number and name of an agent that they said would be contacting me. We then traded insurance info and went on our way.

Now should I also call my insurance and file a claim as well? Or would it be advisable not to since it's minor damages? Would filing my own claim just be a headache to go through and not worth the trouble? Would that make my rates increase? Would that allow me to get the dent repaired at her insurance provider's expense?

Sorry if these are dumb questions but I've never been in this situation before.

Please explain it like I'm 5.

Question about dental insurance coverage - cosmetic vs necessary procedure.

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 12:59 PM PDT

    Hello,

I have been dealing with a receding gum issue that is causing severe pain in multiple areas of my mouth.

The dentist that I meet with tells me that insurance will not cover it because fixing receding gums is considered a "cosmetic" surgery. The dentist has confirmed that I do have receding gums. I have told the dentist several times about the severe pain it is causing me and the impact that it has on my life.

The pain is so bad that I cannot eat any hot food or foods that are too cold. When I eat with my partner, they are finished much before me because I have to let my food reach a certain temperature before I can even try to eat. Certain kinds of food also cause me severe pain. Sometimes we don't even eat together because they don't want their food cold but I cannot eat it hot. Not being able to eat with my partner is causing a strain on my life.

I wake up in the morning and my mouth hurts. I try a night guard but that doesn't help. I try flossing, and I have to push through the pain to floss.

Does insurance still consider procedures of this nature as cosmetic even though it's causing extreme pain? Without insurance coverage, the procedure will be too costly because there are multiple trouble areas that need to be repaired. I really would like this fixed so that I could eat normally.

Thank you for your help and guidance.

Collision Leads to Lawsuit. Who Has Final Say on Legal Decisions: Insurance? Insured?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 12:28 PM PDT

My personal experience is US/TX; I assume different states have different standards.

My specific history that inspired the question involved a lawsuit arising from property damage, but I assume the same can be asked of bodily injury.

Scenario: there is a collision, an insurance company accepts fault, the not-at-fault damaged party and the accepting-fault insurance company cannot come to an agreement, so a lawsuit is filed by the damaged party (against the insured driver and handed off to the insurance company).

For the lawsuit, who makes the final decision on legal tactics to pursue, expert witnesses to hire, depositions to schedule, settlements to accept (or reject and head to court)?

Will my insurance go down if I fire an employee?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 12:20 PM PDT

Actually, I'm the employee. I was driving a company dump truck and accidentally rear-ended someone. No one was hurt and my boss would have paid out-of-pocket, but they insisted on going through insurance. Now, my boss says his premium is going to go up some $700/mo. I'm wondering, if I quit or if he fires me, would his insurance still go up or would they allow him to keep the same premium? I'm speaking typically, of course.

    Thanks!
