[Serious] [US] I HATE being the only black accountant

    Posted: 11 Oct 2020 02:56 PM PDT

I will always remember when I told a family friend who worked at KPMG that I wanted to go into accounting and she told me "you will be the only one" and I shrugged it off and she repeated "you will be the only one and you will know it." I had no idea what she meant until I started my career (about 2 years in now).

So far at work I have dealt with:

Having the department head partner ask me to talk to a black client for him because I'm "more patient than him"

Over-hear conversations about how certain partners want to run over the local protestors if they had the chance

Say the police were totally justified in how they handled Breonna Taylor (not gonna explain this one if you don't get it, I am just venting right now)

People make comments on my hair... too often (I am a woman)

Explain to a co-worker why it's weird that our city has a big black population and I can count on 2 fingers the number of black employees at our ~100 person office

I know for a fact that I am hyper monitored

One time out at a client the in-charge was super worried about someone slashing his tires just because a black homeless guy walked up to him in broad daylight

It is so tiring feeling like I am representing ~my people~ all the time at work. I honestly don't even know the last time a black person worked in my department. Hell, I am the only person with curly hair. All the time I am super up beat and positive because I know the moment I'm not I will confirm other's biases. I'm 99.9% sure I'm most people's meaningful interaction with a woman of color during the week.

If you are another black accountant please reach out to me because I don't know how I am going to stick it out in this profession. I love accounting and I am CPA track but the politics of work are draining me of my life force.

EDIT: I am going to log off to read for a while. Thanks to everyone who has contributed meaningfully to my post.

    Sunday scaries

    Posted: 11 Oct 2020 06:20 PM PDT

I have the Sunday scaries and I'm not even working for the next 2 weeks. I'm between jobs (new one doesn't start until the 26th), so there's nothing I even need to be worrying about.

What the fuck is wrong with me?

Rejecting Big 4 Due To Worries About Mental Health

    Posted: 11 Oct 2020 03:56 PM PDT

Hearing about all the horror stories about the big 4 and how regular people become depressed and anxious during the time there really worries me. I know for a fact taking this offer means I will suffer a great deal just for the sake of my resume. What should I do? Should I just take it and if I end up becoming extremely suicidal maybe then I'll have to quit?

    Can't take it

Stressed everyday for no particular reason. Social anxiety. Tired of everything. See no purpose... Not up for this 9-5 grind for 20 years. No health insurance (expensive and bad options from employer)...

    Big 4 Internship

    Posted: 11 Oct 2020 03:39 PM PDT

    Hello Everyone!

I just received a summer internship offer for an audit position in Dallas (KPMG). I love to be prepared and I have no idea what to even expect.

What are the hours generally like?

    Will I be miserable (lol)?

Will it be a rewarding experience?

I've just been reading so many different experiences that people have with the Big 4 and it is making me nervous!!

How much do accountants make after Big 4 in industry in the Bay Area

    Posted: 11 Oct 2020 02:17 PM PDT

Imma be really raw. I'm only interested in the salary after working at Big 4 (3-4 years). I've heard so many different things ranging from 80k to over 140k in industry. Does anyone have any insight on what's more probable. Thank you to anyone who can provide me a better idea of what this career is like in terms of pay.

I don't have an identity outside of work. What do you do when you're not accounting?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2020 08:20 PM PDT

Throwaway because coworkers on Reddit. Been working public for last 10 years ish. Recently diagnosed with obsessive compulsive personality disorder, one of the symptoms is extreme devotion to work at the expense of all other relationships.

Just got out of a relationship. I'm probably an extreme case but whenever things got difficult with my ex I would throw myself into work to get away. Especially with this year's special covid edition of busy season. I found out about the OCPD through couples counselling. I'm going for individual therapy now, not asking for that kind of support on Reddit but I really need to ask:

What does everyone do to be more than their job?

Any advice for new controllers? Going from Big 4 Senior to Controller at small manufacturer

    Posted: 11 Oct 2020 09:07 AM PDT

Starting a new job as a controller at small manufacturer next week. I have 3 years public accounting experience, not as much experience with manufacturing clients. I'll be reporting to the CFO, and supervising 2-3 people. Any advice for people who made the transition and how to acclimate quickly.

GPA after getting a b4 internship

    Posted: 11 Oct 2020 06:43 PM PDT

I was fortunately able to land an internship for a b4 audit position, and I personally think my hard work towards getting high gpa played a big role in it. However, now that I was able to get that internship, will my gpa going forward matter that much? Are there any tips on how to stay motivated for doing well in school?

What's the difference between PWC's Assurance Acceleration Center Associate and the usual Associates?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2020 08:50 PM PDT

I apologize in advance because this is my 2nd post on this sub about this topic, but I am not sure where else to ask and my last post was written under the assumption that I'd be working as a "Specialist", not Associate which didn't turn out to be true.

I applied for the "Acceleration Center Audit Associate role" in PWC's Tampa office and I'm scheduled to interview for it soon. I emailed the recruiter whether the interview would be for an Associate or for a Specialist position, and he replied that I'd be interviewing for an Associate role. So, my question is what would be the difference between the "usual Audit Associate" and the "Acceleration Center Audit Associate?" I understand that the usual associates are working in engagement teams and will be facing clients while AC associates don't do that. The job responsibilities on PWC's website are literally the same. I was told in the previous topic that Acceleration Centers deal with the most boring stuff that engagement teams don't want to deal with it.

Can anyone elaborate on that "most boring stuff" and give some specifics compared to the usual responsibilities? Can anyone please explain in detail what would be the difference between these roles? I know what typical Audit Associates do but I really struggle to understand the difference between what I'd be doing in the Acceleration Center and what I'd be doing in the usual roles(besides not meeting the clients).

When do you guys forecast the U.S. job market will return to pre-covid level?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2020 08:46 PM PDT

Currently, many students are struggling up the wazoo when it comes to securing jobs.

How long do you think this economy will stay this way until it gets better? I am anticipating the unemployment rate will peak in a couple months and then taper off gradually.
