Failed my intermediate accounting 1 midterm

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 05:59 PM PDT

So I just got my grade back on my intermediate accounting 1 midterm. I failed the test and I made a 58. The class average was a 74, and I doubt we are going to get a curve for the test, so I am stuck with the grade. I don't feel so great about how I did, and I am feeling a wide range of emotions. Does doing poorly on midterms mean that someone is not good enough to be an accountant. I made a 76 on the prior midterm we took, so my grade is definitely going to stumble. The midterm that I failed covered ratios, revenue recognition and cash and cash equivalents. Did you guy ever do really badly on midterms too? I am just kinda distraught right now and any advice would help me out a lot.

TL;DR I did bad on my midterm and I don't know how to feel

I feel like my personal life is so "unprofessional" for this job

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 09:50 AM PDT

Hey guys, like this title says: I feel as though my time outside of work is completely incongruent and misaligned from my accounting co-workers, and it's bumming me out because I feel like the oddball. It's hard to connect with other people at work because I feel so different. I'm a 30 year old single guy who lives on his own. I don't really have much commitments other than my job, so that leaves me with a lot of free time. Here is my life in bullet points:

    - I love playing video games (Warzone, Flight Simulator, Final Fantasy, Spiderman)
    - I love rap/heavy metal music
    - I drink regularly (don't get drunk on weekdays), but have 1-2 beers a night
    - I use a THC vape pen (light use nightly, before bed)
    - I love to go on big exotic vacations (Japan, Thailand, Cambodia, Korea, Spain just to name a few)
    - I ride a motorcycle, sport bike
    - I'm into fitness, and bodybuilding
    - I sometimes use nicotine pouches/SNUS, occasionally
    - I'm into DJing and EDM music, including going to music festivals
    - I enjoy skateboarding
    - I'm part of a sports league with weekly soccer games
    - I think accounting is really, really boring. But I still do my work.

    And here are my co-workers:

    - Married with kids
    - I never hear about any drinking
    - I never hear about any THC/marijuana use
    - Weekends consist of: taking kids to the park
    - Hobbies include: Sports, golf, and talking about the weather… maybe running
    - No EDM music/rap/metal music
    - Vacations include: going to the beach or Disney every single year
    - Seem to love sitting at a desk doing accounting work all day, and have no other interests in life.

These are the reasons I feel like I don't belong in accounting, everybody else seems "responsible" and seem like they have no time for non-sense. I, on the other hands, like to have fun and let loose. However, I feel like I don't "belong" in this field, and feel like I'm a crazy person compared to my co-workers. Am I "normal"? I understand the THC use and alcohol aren't good things, but honestly, I don't have kids, live on my own, pay my bills on time, and get my work done. Why should it matter? Is this going to negatively affect my career in the long run? Maybe this is just a corporate culture mismatch, but I don't know.

Has anybody else felt this way or can help me figure this out?

Open positions posted online that dont hire?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 09:06 PM PDT

I saw a post here a few weeks back about someone being frustrated that companies interview candidates for roles without the intention of hiring and waste the candidates time.

I recently had an interview with a start-up type company that went really well and ended with the person asking me when i can start and comp requirements etc and then i never heard from the internal recruiter again with an offer. I saw the same job reposted today as a new opening on linkedin.

Is this something companies intentionally do? if so, what do they gain from this? should i follow up on the position or let it go?

    Experienced Senior Interviews

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 10:49 PM PDT

I have some interviews lined up with a couple of firms ranging from local to Big 4 in the SF Bay Area. Despite being somewhat confident in my work experience (3 busy season and a CPA) I am still extremely nervous about being interviewed. For those of you who have had more experience in interviews. Can you provide some insight on what they would be asking about for an experienced senior hire? And how I should prepare for it?

    Thank you in advance!

[CAN] I have five years of public accounting experience earning $75,000 CAD a year. How do you think about my salary?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 06:41 PM PDT

I am a CPA, got my designation last this year. I live in Saskatchewan and I am earning $75,000 a year as a senior accountant. I work at a medium-sized local public accounting firm with 33 staff, 5 partners. I am wondering how other people think about my salary, if it's high enough, or if it's too low. If too low - how much do you think an acceptable salary for someone like me? Just really curious. Thank you!

    weird experience with a senior

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 03:26 PM PDT

Hi, posting on throwaway with intentionally vague information for my anonymity. this is long but im honestly incredibly upset.

I am in B4 tax. new to this job and i have been working with a senior for a pretty big engagement. I am not naive enough to say i havent made mistakes or that i know what i am doing. i fully own up to all mistakes, but im giving 110% to learn from mistakes which is what i think is important. My senior and I have gotten along well until maybe a month or so ago when the Sr started to be very nitpicky about small things (ie, for one of our probably 30 internal documents I prepared, the heading was off). this was not going to the client or a partner. nor was anyone ever going to take a second look at it besides me or this person and maybe our manager (who i know for certain wouldnt give a shit - the manager makes spelling mistakes and whatever else, no one cares).

this was ok (technically yes its my fault so i made it as a note to learn from) until earlier this week, i had to print 10 or so reports. for context, i have to go into our software, check a box to display a date of incorporation for subsidiaries (there were 10+, they all have the same date). I printed and flipped through the first 5, and everythings looking good so i went ahead and printed the last few. I print all 10, add them to our server and immediately (before i TOLD THE SR that i was done) i get a message from Sr asking if ive submitted the reports to our server. I reply immediately, weirded at the timing, saying yes and then i basically get immediately shamed for missing one date of incorp, which was showing the wrong date. asking if I take time to review my work. mind you, it wanted these printed ASAP so i switched over from my other task to get this done.

Anyway the weird part is I go back into this subsidiaries folder in our software and saw there is a manual entry to block the printing of the date. I can't see who it was but there's only myself, the Sr and a third person who has 0 accounting background (he just makes our folders for us, a specialist) who have access. I vented to one of my good co worker friend who basically said he suspects the same thing happened with the same Sr to him. He was absolutely certain a form had all the necessary info and the Sr made a point that he missed one out to him. We both don't have proof (how could we?) but if it is the case its pretty shitty.

Technically yes we should review everything we print out, but when you're printing multiple files with a deadline coming up and it's a menial task like this and see the first few are looking good, sometimes you just slip up. The frustrating thing is I have for the most part enjoyed working with the Sr and gave them feedback last that theyve been a great help and I even mentioned that I ecognize sometimes I make simple mistakes & I've been trying to limit that.

Anyways i just wanted to half vent and half get advice on how to proceed. i know with 100% certainty im going to get an incredibly terrible evaluation which sucks because i think ive cut down on my mental mistakes aside from 3-4 over the past couple months working with this individual. they've also made small mistakes too but i dont shame them because we're humans. even our director makes mistakes like that.

Advice on how to get in the studying mindset?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 07:44 PM PDT

I work full time, Im out the door at 7:30 AM and get home at like 6-6:20. This is because we dont work remotely, something my company failed to mention was not an option when I asked, I live about 30 minutes away without traffic, and I have to be at work for 9 hours. By the time I get home I am just tired and hungry. Any advice on how to get myself energized enough to study? Should I drink coffee in the afternoon so Im awake enough by the time I get home? I would try and find a place nearby to study at but everything is closed and I need a wall outlet for my laptop plus its getting colder and the sun goes down earlier.

Im trying to stay focused on the exam but its difficult with all of that. Any advice?

    Writing off purchased items?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 07:29 PM PDT

Hello, I'm asking on behalf of a friend. She's on 1099 independent contractor and will be visiting homes to provide patients with exercises. She was required to buy her own equipments (dumbbells, pricey bus pass, other medical supplies). Can she write off these items? What's your advice? Thank you.
