Anyone else see their quality of work deteriorating before their eyes?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 07:24 PM PDT

I'm in tax and deadline is 10/15 yada yada so it's Saturday and I'm about to hit 75 hrs since Monday.

I can see before my very eyes my ability to type coherent sentences has gone in the trash. I've sent out emails with open items to managers/partners and then 5 minutes later followed up saying "SORRY NVM I FOUND IT." Ironically the more I work the more I feel like an idiot

Cant keep up on billable hours, depressed and unmotivated to work. What do I do?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 11:17 AM PDT

Work in tax and they keep giving us billable goals that I cant reach. I can find the work if I want to but literally cant get myself to work. My mind goes blank and I want to puke. I have honestly never felt like this before.

I think I am a high performer, and everyone seems to like me. I just dont want to get in trouble for this. It feels like we had a never ending busy season this year and I am taking my exams and dealing with personal issues on top of everything else in 2020. I really think I hit a wall here. I'm expecting a call soon about my hours so I dont know what to do. I like my job for the most part so I dont want to quit or look for a new one just yet. But also I'm scared I might lose my job if I dont get my hours up soon... so maybe thats my only option. Advice?

Edit: the personal issues are loss of a loved one, not fighting with the wife or anything like that.

Other campus recruiters out there, was your class this year slim?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 07:15 PM PDT

I assume it was because of COVID-19 and virtual college, but this has to have been the worst recruiting class I've interviewed in 8 years. I was accepting people with sub 3.0 GPAs at the end of it. Schools where I'd normally get 50+ applicants I had <5.

I asked friends at other firms in the area, same thing. Now I'm wondering if it's regional or nationwide.

Does it look bad to apply for multiple internships at one company?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 07:40 PM PDT

I was applying to internships on LinkedIn and one company had 3 internships - a FP&A, Audit, and General Accounting internship. I was curious if it looks bad to apply for all three or if it is acceptable? All internships are for Summer of 2021.

How bad are busy season hours at big 4 San Jose offices? Also, are there multiple busy seasons? How do hours compare to midsize SJ offices? Thanks!

PWC Assurance Acceleration Center interview soon but I just realized that I don't really want to be doing that.

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 05:37 PM PDT

So the job titled I applied for was "Acceleration Center Risk Audit associate" but based on what I read online, I wouldn't be even called an Associate, I'd be a "Specialist" instead? From what I've read, all the employees at that center in Tampa are not in a client-facing role, doing the most boring job possible, and are paid literal peanuts compared to normal Associates. So I have 2 questions:

1)Did I misunderstand anything or what I wrote above is right and I will be basically interviewed for a role of a 3rd-tier employee at PwC?

    2) If yes, then is it ok to email an interviewer and say that there's been a misunderstanding and I'm not interested in that job? There are other roles on PwC website that I'd rather apply for and take my chances with them. I have an interview really soon, and I've just realized what exactly I'd be interviewing for, so I'm afraid that if I just say that I'm not interested, they will tell me to get lost. Or I had another thought: I could interview for the "ASR Audit Specialist" role job, then if I pass it, I could say something like "this salary is too low, can I try interviewing for other roles?" I'm also a campus hire if that matters.

I am very confused but I hope that I made my issue clear.

Students: you don't have to strive for perfection

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 09:56 AM PDT

Rant type post, but also just wanted to share my thoughts to any students that might have the same attitude as me.

By no means would I consider myself perfect. But I have always strived for perfection throughout college. 4.0 major GPA; 3.96 cumulative GPA; graduating with 153 credits in 4 years in order to meet CPA licensure requirements; 2 internships to date, 1 in tax, 1 in general accounting/tax.

Today, I received my third consecutive rejection to a job that I reallyyyy wanted. Another top 20 firm (already rejected by Big 4 applications I am interested in lol). This one really stung as it was in an area I would love to move to (lots of opportunities), and I had gone through the entire interview process and was awaiting final choices.

I don't doubt I will find a job one day. However, I can't help but feel that I could have better spent the past 4 years of my life. Less worries about receiving perfect grades; less anxiety about not having related accounting experience; less overly analytical planning of my future in general.

If you are a current student that feels like your entire future will forever be affected by a less than perfect exam grade, reevaluate what it is that currently makes you happy and allocate (lol) a little more of your time into that aspect of your life.

    Work Question advice please

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 06:53 PM PDT

So I just started working as an accounting assistant and I REALLY don't know a lot. My boss just started me on coding credit card receipts to GL accounts and here is the thing. Sometimes we don't get all the receipts from the employees that have credit cards. If this is the case, and the purchase is less than $50, my boss wants me to guess and just put it somewhere depending on what store they went to. If it's more than $50, boss wants me to ask for a receipt and if employee doesn't respond, boss says to just guess. Sometimes the employee will tell me what they bought but won't give me a receipt. So, the question that I have is that is this acceptable/ legal accounting practice to just guess without a receipt? Because they probably deduct it later on to reduce their taxes but then if there's an audit and auditors ask for receipts, what do I do then?? Obviously I'm the one who coded it so it's on me! ALSO, the company works with 3rd party CPA so maybe the CPA looks through everything and if it doesn't have a receipt, they don't deduct it and then it's not an issue? also, when I code it, in the description, I write missing receipt/ no receipt. Please advise me, I don't want to destroy my career.

    Air Force - officer accountant

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 12:05 PM PDT

Does anyone have any experience in this field/position? Couple friends have been talking to me recently that are Air Force and said that officer life + choosing desk from Air Force is life being made. But wondered if anyone on here has been in that specific position before.

Any advice, literally any at all. Bad things. Good things. I'd like to know whatever is possible as I'd like to be able to make a well rounded decision if I should even consider trying for it.

    Thanks.

How common is it for firms to help pay for moving?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 05:48 PM PDT

For example, if you are a new associate do firms usually help pay for moving expenses in order for you to relocate?

I'm starting at a firm that has offices in Texas (1 in every major city), cali (1 or 2 offices), and NY(just 1 office here) but they don't help with moving expenses. A different firm I did an internship for in cali reimbursed everything (but paid a lot less).

Just wondering what the "norm" is. Does Big 4 help? Once I move to industry does anything change?

    Thanks!

80% of my intern class are women?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 07:48 PM PDT

This is for B4 audit specifically. Our recruiter CC'ed her email to every intern and I got a headcount of 2:11.

I am definitelty not complaining, I am just making an acute observation.

I wonder if this the norm? I always thought accounting was a pretty even profession when it comes down to sex!

Question about taxes as a dependent

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 10:37 PM PDT

    Hey there,

I have a two part question regarding taxes as a dependent. I'm 19, live in California, and file on my own but I am claimed as a dependent by my parents. The two questions are these: 1. Is there any way for my parents to find out exactly how much I make (and from where I make it)? And 2. Am I still able to claim the standard deduction despite being a dependent?

Hopefully that's enough info for the question to be answerable.

    Thanks
