The Macro picture is improving for Australia - could be supportive of Australian Equities as well as the Aussie Dollar

There have been a number of macro data released in Australia of late, most of which have surprised to the upside (as measured by Citi Economic Surprise Index - chart below)

    Australia Citi Economic Surprise Index

Though a few PMI releases crossed back into "contraction" territory, just below the ever important 50 mark, they have markedly improved from the depths of the crisis.

    New Export Orders PMI

The New Export Orders PMI data highlighted above is especially interesting, as Australia is a major exporter (nearly 22% of GDP, according to the World Bank).

If we look at the Observatory of Economic complexity — the major trade partner is China.

    OEC profile for Australia

Looking at Q2 GDP China has rebounded while the rest of the world has floundered (data from OECD) - and the Renminbi just jumped the most it has in 15 years (FT article on the FX move)

OECD dashboard fo Q2 2020 GDP Figures

All this is to say that in Australia, economic figures have been better than forecast (indicated by the surprise index), its main trading partner is back to business, and its export PMI numbers have been improving.

This backdrop has actually been seen a number of times before:

    • July 2006
    • December 2008
    • June 2009
    • September 2014
    • January 2016
    • May of this year

Looking at those historical time periods, both the Aussie Dollar and Australian Equities performed well over a 3-6 month horizon.

XP - the SPI 200 Futures contract rallied (historical episodes shown below), and the Aussie Dollar appreciated meaningfully against both the Euro and the Japanese Yen.

S&P/ASX 200 Future - grey bars show prior history with similar macro picture
