    People deserve second chances

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 05:11 PM PDT

I interviewed a new guy today.

His wifebeater was covered in blood and he smelled like he hadn't showered in weeks.

When asked about his greatest weakness, he talked about his addiction to crystal meth. He uses every weekend and needed this job to keep up his recreational activities and cover his child support.

When I told him that we do mandatory drug testing, he told me to kill myself.

I could tell this guy needed someone to take a chance on him.

I hired him and can tell he'll be the future CEO.

    He starts on Monday.

    Some people need second chances.

    Agree?

Why don't auditors receive a badge and a gun?

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 12:52 PM PDT

As far as I know, auditors are the police officers of the financial world. Without us there would be no order and the NYSE would be like a black market.

I heard the IRS auditors get a gun.. Why can't big 4 auditors get one too?

Imagine how fucking lit it would be if we carried a gun and a badge.

$1000 missing from misc? Bitch you better provide an explanation or we gonna arrest the fuck out of you

Why does the auditing world keep preaching the "we're making a difference"

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 07:36 AM PDT

I really need to get this off my chest. I've been at a Big 4 two years now and since I've been here I've constantly been hearing stories from partners about how important Audit is to society, how we're making a difference in our client and the world. The fakeness of it all really gets to me more than it should.

I'm sure every single person involved knows how much of a bullshit that is but they keep preaching it. I always wonder why we can't just be real about it and admit that Audit is just a necessary evil and not some important shit that's making an impact on the world.

Has anyone experienced senioritis during their final year in college after they got an offer?

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 01:42 PM PDT

I received a full-time offer for next year and still have one more year of school to finish.

I have literally zero motivation for school right now. The offer isn't contingent on maintaining my GPA or anything.

I still want to do well because who knows if I might want to do MBA or something 10 years from now, but that's not a strong enough motivation, especially when everything's online right now and I'm pretty much stuck in my room all day. I feel like if I was on campus and with my friends, I would have fun studying... but that's not the case right now.

Anyone ever experienced this? How do you motivate yourself again?

Anyone ever move to Europe after getting an accounting degree in America?

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 02:56 PM PDT

How did that work out for you?

Did you need to learn a bunch of new things?

Was it difficult finding a job?

Does having your CPA mean anything over there?

    Any suggestions?

I'm interested in moving to Europe but I don't know how well my skills would transfer over.

I keep going back and forth between: I’m ruining my career vs I will have a lot less stress.

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 08:47 AM PDT

Background: I started my career at a well known local firm, which eventually got bought out by a top 20 regional firm. I was there 3.5 years until I made senior, then I jumped ship to industry. By the end of my stint in public, I almost wanted to leave accounting altogether.

Got a job as a senior accountant in a F250 company making about $85-$90k. I was happy for a little bit. Found that little spark that made me love accounting in the first place. Been here for 4 years. However, over the past 2 years, things have become very...tedious. Managers getting more nitpicky, tasks piling higher, being pulled in 5 different directions as soon as I walk in the door, shortening the close to 4 days, not having holidays, etc. it almost feels like public at this point, and I'm already having the same feeling I did right before I left public. I get stressed out because I can barely focus on one thing at a time, and my work quality suffers, which stresses me out even more.

I'm at the point where I kinda hate accounting, but it's really the only professional skill set I have. So i just work to keep a job, not really to get promoted. It feels weird because everyone else in accounting is trying to become the next CFO; I just want a job that pays for all of my needs and most of my wants. I think.

I interviewed for a Senior Financial Analyst with a local city government. I got the position, and while my pay would be cut by about $3K, it's a 38 hour, 4 day work week and I would get a pension. I accepted the position and just gave my notice at my current job.

I keep going back and forth, though. I work for one of the best companies in my industry and it really is a great company. One that many, at least in my town, would be happy to have on their resume. Am I giving up future opportunities because I feel stressed right now?

Or, am I gonna be happier with less stress and a slower career path with more free time? On top of that, I have government experience from my audit days, but it's been 4+ years. Will I even be good at it? Will it actually be less stressful, and if it is, will I realize that I actually do want to make it further in accounting?

I keep making pro and cons lists for everything and it doesn't help me in the slightest. the one time excel doesn't come through for me /s

Idk. Maybe I need a shrink. Or a new career.

TL;DR: giving up a job at F250 to go to Govt and I'm having doubts.
