    I love dismissing annoying salesman

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 09:52 AM PDT

I didn't realize how busy I would be with every type of salesman when starting a small business. From customers who want to give me their card and off their services, to cold calls from strangers all the way to the guy that I reach out to for their service. There are just people who refuse to listen to what I need from them and just shove their services down my throat.

I truly enjoy the email or phone call that says no thanks, this isn't working, dont contact me anymore.

3 emails sent out this morning and I feel great for this work day. Just wanted to share.

I live in a developing country and I see no way to start a low capital home based manufacturing business and outcompete China in the Western market. Can anyone suggest any ideas or would it be wise to just give up?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 08:14 AM PDT

    Non-native English speaker here.

I live in Bangladesh and I am thinking of starting a small manufacturing business. I am looking for a low capital business that can be run from my home (zoning here allows lots of businesses to be started in residential areas that are not allowed in developed countries).

I am primarily looking to exporting to the West (USA, Canada, EU).

Now I have been asking on the internet and searching for years now but so far I can't find one single manufacturing business idea. People keep on telling me that there is no way I can export to the West and still outcompete China with my manufacturing products. I am exhausted and at my wits end.

I have thought of selling craft products to the USA in small batches. Shipping costs by DHL/airway is very high at like USD 100 and above per kg. Through ocean, you need at least a small batch where per kg its like 5 USD but it takes at least a month. So selling to customers and shipping to their door is not possible. I can export to small businesses in the West though and I figure that would be profitable. But I just see any products that I can match in price and quality with China.

Can someone please suggest ten small home-based manufacturing ideas that I can export to the West?

Is there something special about Bezos's personality that makes him a successful CEO

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 07:18 PM PDT

Everyone knows how Jeff Bezos managed to concur the online sales market. What I am wondering is if there is something special about who he is that makes him so successful? Does he have a specific personality trait that greatly contributed to his success or is he just an average guy that happened to have a brilliant vision?

Which resources helped you research and plan your small business?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 08:40 PM PDT

    Hey all,

    Location is Texas if relevant.

So I've finally cleared out my debt and saved up a couple K's to start a business. I have ideas but the purpose of the post to focus on the community's recommendations for content/courses/resources that can help prospective small business owners better form, and operate their business. Cause let's face it. Youtube and the internet in general is saturated with "Gurus" and "Pros" and cutting through the noise is an arduous task on it's own.

if you have any recommendations that would be much appreciated. FWIW I've found a couple of resources I think I would recommend:

    1. Starting a business quickstart guide
    2. The Lean Startup -
    3. Your State's secretary of state website
      1. The specifics for a particular business structure in your state
      2. Name Search
      3. Forms required to form your business.

    Community Submissions

    1. SBA/SBDC office
    2. "SWOT" Analysis

How did you come to realize that your small business needs a branding expert to build your brand?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 03:37 AM PDT

Hi everyone, where ever and whatever time it is, I hope you're having a great day.

I am in the beginning stages of starting my own branding business, and it would be of much help to me if you could share some stories about how you have branded your business.

I believe it may help me come up with more ideas as to how to approach potential clients.

How did you realize that you need branding?

Who did you turn to? (Friends? Google? What did you search?)

    Thank you very much.

    Your time is invaluable!

    Have a great day:)

    Small Business Support Platform!

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 06:07 PM PDT

    Hi r/smallbusiness friends,

My name is Brandon Youra and I founded an online platform for small businesses called Small Biz Heroes. We offer free professional support to small businesses around the world. This includes services to help these businesses pivot online such as graphic design, social media marketing, accounting, and much more! We accomplish this by connecting business professionals (we call them heroes) with small businesses that require free help to survive and thrive. You can visit our platform at www.smallbizheroes.co and see our over 250 heroes signed up who are ready to assist small businesses. We also have 230 small businesses registered who can either post a project they need help with and/or reach out to heroes directly for support.

We launched our website just two months ago, but we started on Instagram at the beginning of the pandemic back in April. Since the start we've helped over 1000 small businesses get connected with the support they need. You can hear from Impact Island Cafe, an actual small business who received help by watching this review from Narissa, founder of the Florida-based food truck business. For more stories and details on what we are and what we have accomplished check out our impact deck linked here.

We need to get this platform in front of the world, and with your help we can make that happen! Will you help share Small Biz Heroes with those who need it most? Please reply back and let's collaborate!

    Sincerely,

    Brandon Youra

Might have avoided a false chargeback claim, or maybe not. Figured it wasn't worth the risk.

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 11:06 AM PDT

I'm in the apparel print industry -- we do a lot of walk-ins with no minimums as it's a significant part of our business. Had a client walk in yesterday wanting a dozen shirts made for his recently deceased dog. We did a mockup, ran it by him, told him when it would be ready by the following morning.

Next day rolls around and he shows up two full hours before pickup and goes ballistic demanding why it wasn't ready and requesting a refund. After a lengthy shouting match (mostly on his end), we presume a lightbulb turned on in his head, at which point his entire attitude changes and he tells my guys to just run the shirts and he'll come back to collect in a hour.

I get the call and ask my guys how he made the payment: Amex. I immediately tell them to cancel the job and to tell the client we weren't doing the work and to refund the money.

My best guess was (this is entirely due to how his demeanor changed on the fly) that he realized he could just collect the shirts and file the claim and get his money back; rather than having wasted his time for just a refund and no shirts.

Needing advice - re discussion with potential business partner

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 09:04 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I've been in discussion with a family member about joining their small financial services business. The discussions have been around me joining the business as a partner to eventually take over and give the current owner an exit/sale strategy when they are ready for retirement.

We have been speaking on and off about this topic for around 5 years. I was the one to put forward the idea and the current owner has shown increasing interest along the way.

To date, I still haven't got a definitive answer as to whether they want to go ahead or not.

Following our last discussion and upon his recommendation, I went ahead to get my employment contract reviewed by lawyers to check any restraint clauses etc, as I currently work in a competing business.

As we still haven't got a black and white YES or No answer, I want to approach the owner again to see where I actually stand but not sure how to start the conversation, which will get some answers.

This person is a 35 year veteran in our industry, has owned the business for 25 years and is nearing retirement..

Has anyone had experience in a similar situation what could shed some light and point me in the right direction??.... I am getting a little impatient. :)

Appreciate any help provided! - Thank you.

    Question about delivery service

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 08:34 PM PDT

Not sure if this is right place for this.

So my question is how much can you make off of a delivery if you own a delivery business. Like how much on average? I'm sorry that this is very vague but I'm basically asking if creating a delivery business is really profitable (assuming you have contracts with companies inorder to do delivers), and if so, how profitable? Basically I'm looking to purchase a delivery business from someone which already has contracts so that part is covered. I know I should be asking the person selling the business, but id also like to ask here so I don't get tricked/ so I can have more knowledge about this. Sorry if this is vague or hard to understand.

    Inventory Tracking Tools

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 04:24 PM PDT

    Hi there,

I'm introducing a retail product line where I sell jewelry and have a lot of inventory. I noticed that I can buy premade barcodes from amazon but have no idea how to track inventory. I have about 2 thousand pieces of inventory and am trying to figure out a way to track them online. I want to know how many pieces are sold and how many remain so I can see how much profit I am making. I am also on a fairly strict budget of just a few hundred dollars. Does anyone know of any good inventory tracking tools? Are barcodes the way to go? Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Will there be any legal problem if I repackage bottled vitamins into an assorted vitamin pills for daily intake and resell them?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 07:57 PM PDT

Hi, I'm thinking of starting a small business where customer can purchase assorted vitamins fitted into a daily pack for ease of use and carrying. As this is a small business, there is no way for me to produce my own vitamins and I was thinking repacking bottled vitamins. Will there be any legal problems doing this? Is there any sort of required documents doing this?

Edit: Hi guys. Just pointing out since I'm not very clear on questions. I'm not trying to find legal loopholes or make this "technically" legal. I'm trying to find the steps to make this as ethically and objectively legal as possible.

Sone things people in the comment pointed out: -Using a white label manufacturer.

-Dangers of unclear packaging and mislabeling product.

How can I open a small business while on unemployment benefits?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 05:05 PM PDT

I'm a fashion designer and got laid off my job last month due to Covid. I'm also 8 months pregnant. For a while I've been dreaming of starting my own children's wear line but because of the conflict of interests with my job I kept postponing it. When I was let go I thought it was the perfect opportunity to do it (specially considering no one will hire me this pregnant) but while doing research I found out that in NY you can lose your unemployment benefits if you start a business. I don't have much capital so it's pretty much just me sewing the clothes and doing everything. I wish I could just register a LLC or sole proprietorship but I can't lose my benefits. I looked into SEAP but I was furlough for a few months before being officially laid off so I don't think I have 13 weeks left (unless they count the extended pandemic benefits which they are not clear about on their website). Any ideas on how I can make this happen? I was going to set up a Spotify and/or Etsy shop but now I'm worried I can get in trouble. Thanks for your help!

Business owners with employees: How much do you make from them?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 08:33 PM PDT

Just wondering how much money your employee(s) make you?

My cousin has a small bookkeeping firm and makes 50,000 yearly from each employee. He charges 60 dollar per hour for this services. That's 115,000 per employee and pays the employees 65,000 and takes 50,000 for the business.

    Business Bank Account

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 12:49 PM PDT

I am starting an online clothing boutique and was wondering if I have to open a business bank account to use for clothes purchases. Can I use my personal credit card to make purchases for my business? Can I just open a business credit card and pay it off with my personal bank account? Or do I need a business bank account? My business is a sole proprietorship and has a DBA.

First year LLC owner. How much of distributed profit should I set aside for the tax man?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 11:30 AM PDT

I was an employee with taxes withheld, and FICA contributions etc made. Now I am a partner in the company and just received my first monthly distribution of profit. Because it is late in the year, I likely won't engage a personal CPA, and won't have to start with quarterly estimated payments until next year. For the remainder of this year, what percentage of these distributions of profit should I be setting aside? I live in California.

What are unrealistically good business models(big margins)?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 09:15 AM PDT

For example, renting out products (blockbuster was great at the time). Is there anything we can rent that lots of people want?

Services tend to be great because you can reuse the equipment for years (lawn mowers), or car washing uses water. Dog walking has no big expense other than a worker.

Is the next big thing meal prep? People buying bulk foods, and then locally selling a weeks worth of pre marinated food, homemade frozen pre cooked microwavable type food?

what are good businesses that have really good margins?

What to know about keeping your domain name secure

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 12:07 PM PDT

    Made mistake with customer.

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 11:38 AM PDT

An employee of mine sent me a wrongly made invoice and I sent it to the customer without checking it. (20% less)

The customer sent the money and already sold the goods (he says so). This are products that I already am charging more and are going to increase its value for a big margin.

I can't send him the goods on this conditions, I rather lose the customer. I'm going to offer giving him back the money (+interest) or telling him that his customer needs to pay this extra 20%, that in the long run he is getting a good deal either way.

I'm between crossroads, on one hand I know the mistake is 100% mine. On the other hand I had worse things happening to me by providers, I don't know how bad is asking for that extra 20% (taxes)

Yesterday we spoke and he sounded pissed, I can understand why. The mistake was ours but the financial loss from accepting it is more expensive that losing him as a customer.

So giving him those two options are ok for you ? There is no way that he is gonna sue because in my country any lawyer would laugh at this case.

    Small Business Advice

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 07:38 AM PDT

Hey guys, My name is Will and i'm a motivated 15 year old who is trying to set up their own business, I have set up multiple lemonade stand like business in the past such as PC building, phone cases, etc. These were all small E-commerce businesses that I have had. These were also not legal businesses. I am pretty useful when it comes to drag and drop website builders but have never been able to commit to paying for the service due to fear of failure. I also haven't been able to register for things like Paypal for business because of my age and that has made it difficult to try to accept payments (if I got any) on my websites. I am now looking to set up a business properly and have a few ideas like small auto parts (shift knobs, air fresheners, etc) but clueless about the legalities of this stuff, I wouldn't want someone to crash their car and somehow blame it on the shift knob and I end up getting sued or worse. so I am basically asking for advice, I often have ideas of businesses but how do I get around the age and commitment problems but still make a profitable business? And how do I know when my business idea is good or bad before I go out and spend the money for the product or the website? Also, does anyone have some other advice for me getting into this?

Thanks in advance for the help!

-Will (hopefully soon to be business owner)
