Went to a new dentist but did not opt to get my teeth cleaned but billed for X-ray? Insurance

Went to a new dentist but did not opt to get my teeth cleaned but billed for X-ray?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 12:21 AM PDT

I went to a new dentist and specifically mentioned I wanted to talk about the procedures before being billed for them. They took x-rays as I assumed my insurance covered this as it also covers basic cleaning. They explicitly mentioned that before they did any cleaning they would talk to me about what bill to expect. Explicitly saying its nothing like an ER room. Anyways they wanted to charge me for "deep cleaning" and mentioned my insurance only covered "regular cleaning" and they also wanted to charge me for 1000$ worth of antibiotics. I politely told them id prefer to shop around. Anyways a week goes by and I see on my online insurance portal that they submitted a claim for 700$.

Which included 290$ covered by my insurance (x-ray and Comprehensive Oral Exam??) however I also see that they charged me for 100$ for Preventive procedure and another 300$ for Case / treatment plan.

    This seems incredibly scummy.

I never agreed to any of those things? What can I do? California, USA.

    Renters Insurance Questions

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 06:53 PM PDT

So I have to get renters insurance for a new apartment, and the lease says this about the insurance:

    1. Resident agrees to obtain and maintain, at Resident's sole expense, during the Term of the Lease and any subsequent renewal periods, a policy of personal liability insurance, which provides limits of liability to third parties in the amount not less than $50,000 per occurrence
    2. Resident agrees to maintain a policy of $100,000 personal liability insurance from an insurance company of Resident's choosing

It's easy to find a polity that has $100K personal coverage, but I can't figure out if standard policies would be per occurrence and would provide limits of liability to third parties in the amount not less than $50K per occurrence.

I've been looking at the standard Lemonade policy, and just can't figure it out.

    I'm located in Phoenix, AZ.

    Thank you.

Fighting a $16,000 Facility Fee for the Hospital

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 06:59 AM PDT

Cross posted on the LegalAdvice sub -

This past December (2019) I was attacked by a feral cat -- yep, you heard me right -- and it was so bad that I had to rush to the nearest by urgent care. I had bite and claw wounds all over; legs, arms, even my face. When I walked in, the staff thought it was a dog who had done it because it was so bad. My luck, right?

I'm seen by the nurses who tell me I'm very likely going to have to get the rabies vaccine. They directed me to the county health department - this is in Georgia, by the way. I go to the health department to discuss my options for the rabies vaccine and they also tell me it's pretty much non-negotiable. They had officers out looking for the cat in the area it happened to try and test the cat for rabies so I wouldn't have to go through all the trouble if we could somehow bypass it, but they never found it. I'm redirected by the health department to go to a family doctor for antibiotics because the wounds are getting bad, etc. I'm ultimately told by the family doctor that I have to get the rabies vaccine because it's fatal. Although the likelihood of a stray cat having rabies is slim (since they are quick and intelligent), it's not zero and I couldn't really take my chances.

I called so many different doctors and they told me that the only place I could get the vaccine was at the Hospital. Knew this was bad news from the get-go. I got in contact with my insurance and my dad was helping me out since I was still in college and didn't really know what I was doing. Hospital was in network with BCBS, great. Thought everything was squared away. My dad ended up paying out of pocket around $200 and talked on the phone with the billing department and nurses so we could avoid any shady business lol. Sat there for a couple hours, got the shots, went on my way. Had to go back two more times to get the next rounds, but missed the last round because I was traveling over Christmas, but had also graduated and was back in my home city.

Fast forward to yesterday. I realize I'm in collections for $6,000. Call my insurance to see what's going on. Here's the information they told me: they coded me as a ZQ3, or, as a medical non-emergency. My day of treatment was 12/9 and they never called to get pre-authorization from my insurance. The only correspondence by insurance found was the hospital/physician submitted a claim 4 days later on 12/13. The charged me for two things: 1. A $16k facility fee, and, 2. A $670 Doctor's fee. It's to my understanding that rabies vaccines can sometimes be considered a medical urgency, rather than an emergency, unless the wounds are located on the face and neck. The insurance tells me the only option I have is to have the Hospital try and re-code it.

I call the Hospital's billing department and they tell me that the physician who treated me is the only one who can re-code it. They ask if I ever received an itemized bill, which I said no to. I know I should have asked for all of this while I was at the Hospital for treatment, but I was so flustered and honestly in so much pain I wasn't thinking. The billing department gave the the phone number to the office of the physician who treated me. I'm planning on calling and asking for the itemized bill and standing my ground that this should be re-coded, but I've never done this before and I'm not really sure if there's anything I should or shouldn't say.

Could anyone offer me any advice on how to approach this? Do people often time end up getting lawyers involved to help them fight, what they feel is, an unfit charge? How could I have racked up a $16k facility fee when I was there for maybe a couple of hours? Any tips are appreciated. :) P.S. our healthcare system sucks!

Flight school, damaged helicopter, insurance deductible

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 06:35 PM PDT

Hi all I run a little flight school and have following problem. A student with a flight instructor damaged a helicopter and the deductible for that would be $ 32,000.00. Within the training agreement it´s clearly stated that a student is responsible for any kind of damage and that he must have a insurance which covers at least my deductible. After the incident nobody of those 2 guys feel responsible, like always, and they think that I should pay for the damage. I talked to my insurance if they go after the student to get that amount of $ 32,000.00 . This is the answer I got from the insurance:

"As an approved pilot under the policy, California would consider the CFI an insured, and pursing subrogation against the CFI would violate the concept of suing an Insured after contracting to protect him."

As I know my insurance should protect me of any damages, losses and additional expenses caused by others. That is the reason why I pay them around $30,000.00 a year.

I´m not and insurance expert and really upset, that I should pay for the damage caused by somebody else. Anybody out there who has some experiences with a similar situation which could help me? Thank you!

Adjuster Q - Insured Repair ability to charge for cost of personal time?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 06:14 PM PDT

FL condo mold / water damage claim question. Reimbursement for Personal Time?

    The long short.

I'm in a coverage dispute with my insurer over how long a leak has been occuring that was hidden ( I have a 14 day seepage exclusion that applies regardless of the issue being unknown to me) and I fear I will likely be stuck paying out of pocket. I am closing on a new home soon and I'm tight on funds right now due to the house. To help control cost of repair I'm acting as the GC on the project and finding subs for all of the work. Remediation company, drywall, cabinet maker, painter, etc... This has drastically dropped my costs instead of going through a remediation company like Fire Services but this is costing me in my own personal time and pulling me away from my regular job. In the event I am successful mediating my claim and the insurer agrees to cover the loss am I able to also request reimbursement for my own personal time?

If yes can I bill them my regular pay rate for my job? I'm paid on a commission basis but my annualized income would come out to about $60 a hour assuming I only work 40 hours a week and seems in line with what most contractors might charge at minimum in my area for their time. Also for reference Fire Services Estimate for the work was $8k for everything. My out of pocket cost is looking more like $4k since I am getting discounted rates from all of the trades.

Or is there some industry acceptable standard that I can bill for my time? Can I negotiate a settlement figure between the all encompassing estimate I received from Fire Services and my cost with low overhead?

Thank you in advance to all of the wonderful adjusters of reddit for your responses.

Texas- temporary childcare in my home?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 06:12 PM PDT

So because I have to stay home and watch my kid and make sure she does school work while we are doing online learning, I thought I would offer my home to a couple more kids so their parents could work, and I could make a bit of side cash, and my kid would have some company other than us.

What kind of insurance should I inquire about?

We are only supposed to be distance learning for about a month but it could be longer of course. I only want to take in two kids to make sure I am actually staying on top of everyone's virtual learning and doing what we are supposed to be doing.

    Car accident

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 09:51 PM PDT

    Hello,

I was involved in a rear end crash. I rear ended the other driver. He agreed to settle outside of insurance. He hasn't reported the accident yet. If he reports the accident, but doesn't file a claim, will my insurance find out? I'm willing to pay his repair costs because it is a minor accident. How do I go about this? Should I still report it to my auto insurance company if we settle without involving them?

Seeking Advice - Auto Claim With New Insurance Provider After Making Claim With Different Provider Last Year

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 03:42 PM PDT

I recently cut a turn too tight while driving and scraped the side of my truck against a concrete post. I got an estimate of $2300 for repairs and am considering filing a claim with my current insurance provider (USAA).

My hesitation before making the claim comes from the fact that last year I was hit by another driver, totaled my truck, and filed an insurance claim through my insurance provider at that time (State Farm).

So my questions are: - Will USAA know about my StateFarm claim? - If I file a claim for my bone-headed mistake will it in effect appear to by my second claim in two years? - How will my premiums be affected in either scenario (USAA knows about the previous claim or not)?

If this info helps I joined USAA after marrying my wife, so was added onto her insurance as a family member and didn't go through the individual application process.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

    EDIT: I'm in TX

    Credit score affecting rates?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 09:20 PM PDT

Back when I originally set up my auto policy with Met Life my credit was in rough shape. High 590's I believe. I now have fixed my credit score to well into the 800s.

My question is if I were to call the insurance company and ask them to run another soft pull of my credit would that possibly lower my rates?

Car that started multi vehicle accident on highway fled the scene?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 09:06 PM PDT

Earlier today I was part of a multi vehicle accident during rush hour on the third lane of a highway -- a car suddenly stopped in the third lane without reason, causing a car to hit them from behind, and then we hit that car (going around 50 mph, we slowed down pretty fast from 70 though!)

Well the car that had the sudden stop fled the scene, and all of the other drivers claim the white car started it.

We live in MA, and I'm concerned about what this means insurance-wise, since the first car fled the scene (who was by all accounts driving recklessly) - are we, the third car, going to be put on the hot seat?

I do not want to pay the outrageous out of pocket prices for visits and would like to get my own insurance, but where do I even start? Can I get health insurance while unemployed? How do personal injury auto ins settlements work?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 08:04 PM PDT

My wife was injured in an auto accident. The at fault driver was driving a commercial truck. Our car was totaled. My wife has diagnosed nerve damage from the accident. We hired an accident attorney.

We are at the settlement stage and our attorney is presenting us #s that are lower than we expected. It feels like he is not negotiating from a position of strength and it's all on the terms of the other driver's insurance. Is this normal in auto insurance settlements? At this stage we are settling on pain and suffering and lost wages and future medical expenses.

Condo insurance vs our property insurance for roof leak

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 01:18 PM PDT

Our condo building's roof has developed a leak which led to extensive damage to the walls, ceiling, and floor of our unit. We have submitted an insurance claim with our home insurance, and they are covering the cost of fixing everything, minus our deductible. They have suggested that either the building insurance or the HOA would be responsible for the deductible since the leak originated on the roof.

The HOA does not want to file an insurance claim for this incident. I'm not sure why, but they have decided they just want the building handyman to patch the roof and call it good. They also do not want to pay the deductible since "the Association is not liable for any damaged beyond what is covered by insurance." But of course nothing is covered by insurance since they don't want to make a claim.

Anyone have any experience with this? Any ideas how to proceed?

EDIT: the location is Arlington, Virginia.

Can Someone explain how windshield damaged (rock chips) coverage works typically in Texas

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 10:48 AM PDT

Like any other scenario, I'm driving and a 18 wheeler has no cover on bam 💥, a rock hits my vehicle, a nice rock chip. Insurance says it falls under my comprehensive insurance and my deductible is $1000 (I have liability), so in this case I would pay out of pocket?

From my understanding Wouldn't that cause my premium to increase, count as a claim, and go against me? Being it's small, IMO it makes more sense to pay out of pocket. I'm already paying the consequences of a guy that ran a red light and totaled my vehicle with a by having my premium increase (they tell me even though it's not my fault, because of the claim amount and having to subgrogate the claim, I'm footing a increase for at least 3 years which is another post in itself).

Thank you in advance for anyone who can explain.

Can You Only Insure On 1 Vehicle?

I'm gonna get straight to the point, my father added me to his geico insurance and it went up around $250 because I got added to his new car, my moms car, and my car.

Is it possible to only have me insured on my car, and not theirs? I'm worried Geico's policy forces me to be covered on their cars too.

This is coming from Illinois, US.

Lemonade renters insurance claim rates increase

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 02:51 PM PDT

Has anyone had experience filing a claim with Lemonade? Specifically renters insurance in Southern California.

We recently had a flood incident that had caused minor damage to the dry wall at our neighbor downstairs. The current estimated cost for the repair is around 800$ and our deductible is $500. My question is if it's even worth it to file a claim in this case and how much would the premium go up after a claim like this.

It would be great if anyone who's had similar experience can share their opinion!

    Thanks in advance.

What is it called when you were previously allowed to do something, and then suddenly your insurance punishes you for it?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 02:39 PM PDT

Edit: it's been answered, it's an estoppel! Thank you!

I'm a licensed insurance agent in Washington and Northern Idaho, and I'm having a lethological moment.

There's a term for protections against being punished for something that your insurance company previously allowed you to do without penalty.

    What's the term?

Options for private coverage as a Type 1 diabetic?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 05:44 AM PDT

I currently work for a company that does not provide benefits. Luckily, I can still be on my parents plan for a year, but want to start thinking about moving forward. I got some online quotes for private health insurance for myself and it was roughly 3-400 a month, which I am fine with. However, I am concerned that once they find out I am diabetic they will jack up the prices. What are my best options moving forward.

Side note. I live with my girlfriend who is a teacher. We don't have interest in marriage right now, but talked about the idea of a domestic partnership so I could be on her insurance.
