The ugly truth behind all those unfinished side projects Posted: 23 Aug 2020 08:26 AM PDT I wrote a letter to a developer friend of mine about his huge list of unfinished side projects. After I finished writing I couldn't help but feel like it may be relevant to others because it was definitely also relevant for myself a couple of years ago as well. https://makingjamie.com/a-letter-to-my-friend-with-a-long-list-of-unfinished-side-projects/ If this resonates with you then I hope it gives you the kick up the backside you might just need, either way, thank you in advance for reading and have a lovely evening! Posted: 23 Aug 2020 12:44 PM PDT I find myself thinking of a new idea, diving in head first, and losing interest a week later to chase some new idea. I've been doing this for years, and can never commit to any one thing. How did you get past this? [link] [comments] |
How do I become a home inspector? Posted: 22 Aug 2020 06:50 PM PDT I'm moving the the Pacific Northwest, USA next month and looking to make a career change. Background in graphic design, production management and customer service. I'm in my mid 30's and don't have a degree but I do have a lot of experience in various fields. I have always taken great interest in architecture and home improvement, so this seems like something I would enjoy. Is this a career you would recommend? What have been the pros and cons? Challenges and rewards? What are the costs involved? What does a day in the life look like? Looking for tips from those in the inspection field. Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Prioritizing blog-related tasks when it's a side hustle Posted: 23 Aug 2020 05:57 AM PDT Hi, I am the owner of a blog related to music, which generates what I would call a small salary every month. However, it's a side hustle, since I'm also employed as an IT consultant in a big company in which the salary is much higher. Remark (before I explain my problem) : for various personal reasons, quitting my job to get more free time is not an option right now. The blog is working out OK but there are many things I would like to do for it. For instance :
However, since I'm only working on it on weekends and after my day job, I only have a limited time available. When I am working, I am feeling quite efficient (tbh, apart from a bit of time wasted on the social networks but even though, I am able to deliver stuffs :) ). But the tasks I would like to do are definitely too big to tackle at the same time. The problem is : I can't seem to be able to prioritize them. They are all important : finishing my training is as important as improving SEO, for instance. For different reasons, yes — but both are needed right now. So I'm feeling i'm always running after time to do the things I want to do. I don't think it's a problem of productivity at all, I don't think it's a problem of knowing how to priotize in a [high ROI / low ROI — low energy / time-consuming] matrix vision — it's more a problem that my entrepreunarial brain has many ideas with a rather clear vision of what should be done, and not following them always feels like a mistake. What would be your advice ? Have you experimented similar situations ? I saw various threads on reddit which are related, but at the same time I wanted some topic-specific advices since we're talking about a blog-based business. For some reason I feel the advices I would get may be different because of this context :) Thanks a lot by advance ! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Aug 2020 08:08 AM PDT My current store is dropshipping I feel like I've hit a point I just feel overwhelmed by it all especially the whole marketing thing trying to understand FB ads and contacting instagram influencers all the time, failed paid ads, trying to build a Instagram brand off dropshipping and it's going nowhere I feel so discouraged by this been doing it for over 6 months now building my store trying to learn the business I maybe have 4-5 sales. The thing is I really like the eccomerce model and want to stay in this area but obviously find another model that is more straightforward than dropshipping and something I can be more passionate about can anyone give me some suggestions/opinions or give me your experience with eccomerce? Any help is truly appreciated I feel very stuck right now.. [link] [comments] |

What would be good companies to license to for a kitchen utensil? Posted: 23 Aug 2020 01:22 PM PDT So I got an invention and made up (but not filed) a PPA. I'm from Canada and would like to work with a company that sells in the US and Canada, so I plan to file a PPA in both countries. I'm currently trying to find the best companies I should start with. My device is a simple handheld, non-electronic, kitchen utensil. So: What is the best way to find companies that fit with my product? (any recommendations would be appreciated!) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Aug 2020 05:31 AM PDT DISCLAIMER: This is not a self-promotional post. We just want feedback on how we can get customers online. Me and a couple of friends (early twenties) run a small web dev and graphic design agency. We're still in college and doing this as a side hustle. Background: We have been messing around with graphic designing, web dev, app dev and such things from a very young age and over the years have gotten fairly good at it. Origin: We come from India (a third world country). Although we're not experts at our job, our clients really have been appreciating us for our work quality. Charges: We currently charge around $40 dollars a month for social media handling (with content design). $65 for a 5-page static website, more for ecom website. $2 for basic graphic jobs, $5 for posters, flyers etc. PROBLEM: Since we do okay quality work at extremely cheap rates, I was wondering would it be possible for us to get customers online? Any advice on this would be highly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
What would you pay for an accountant for your type of business? Posted: 23 Aug 2020 08:43 AM PDT I have been working in public accounting and am thinking of going off on my own with smaller businesses. I am trying to decide how to set up my rates/fees. The firm I am at does mostly larger businesses, so I do not have a good idea of what smaller business's value accounting services. Idea 1 - Flat monthly rate that includes monthly and year end services, tax preparation, and on call consulting for things like "Would this be a good idea?" or "What is the deal with all these SBA loans?" Idea 2 - Hourly rate throughout the year where you are invoiced monthly if you needed anything done. Bonus question, if you are looking for an accountant, would you start online or locally? Advice?: Want to sell targeted, designed face masks Posted: 23 Aug 2020 12:28 PM PDT I know the ship has probably sailed. But the other day, I became incredibly inspired by a non-medical face mask which had an uplifting message on it. I bought it right away. My cousin ended up buying the same mask. It showed support for Asians who had been affected by Covid. Im not looking to get rich quick. Inspiring and supporting people is part of this brand. I think making a few extra bucks would help, sure. But also, GAINING the EXPERIENCE to help tackle bigger financial endeavors in the future. I was wondering if anyone could answer the following:

How to start an ammunition resale or manufacturing operation? Posted: 23 Aug 2020 12:12 PM PDT Hey there, long time lurker with aspirations of always starting my own business. I know I'm probably about to get laughed out of the sub, but here in America, we've seen several huge waves of demand for guns and more importantly, ammunition (especially in light of COVID) over the past decade. Again, this is probably crazy, but how would I go about starting as a reseller, or possibly start small as a tiny manufacturer of ammo? I understand that because supply is currently exhausted, resale probably isn't feasible. That said...Any thoughts or advice? [link] [comments] |
Looking for resources on very basic things Posted: 23 Aug 2020 08:24 AM PDT Like, the business side of my business mystifies me. Where can I find a book or resource that says "file your state taxes now, this can be written off, this is how you pay yourself from your business account", kind of very basic book keeping aspects [link] [comments] |
Reality strikes - I can do anything! Posted: 23 Aug 2020 12:07 PM PDT So today reality hit me. I just recently picked up a life long dream of running my own company and being self employed. After 20 years of being employed in different IT roles I initially based my endeavor on what I know - IT consulting. But today I realized, I can actually do anything (as long as it of course continues to bring in income). So wise(?) strangers of Reddit, any suggestions on fun side/seasonal projects that would be fun/inspirational to do? [link] [comments] |
Energy Industry: Proven Wind Energy Forecasting platform - Looking for growth Posted: 23 Aug 2020 05:16 AM PDT TL;DR I have built a platform based on cutting edge Neural Networks technologies, that delivers unprecedented levels of accuracy in Wind & Energy forecast, targeted for Wind Farm operators. This accuracy is better than what is currently widely available in the market and can yield additional multi-million $ per year for wind farm operators. I have technical background and limited business skills - I am looking for a partner, someone that will drive and accelerate the business side (sales, fundraising) In detail: Wind farm operators are highly depended on accurate forecasts. The more accurate the wind forecast is, the better knowledge they have on how much energy they will produce – thus are able to commit higher amounts of energy to the grid, achieving higher profit margin and at the same time acquire a competitive edge on price setting in the energy market. The platform is tested and validated as an MVP for a period of 3 years over 8 wind farms in different European sites of a total 400MW of installed capacity. It delivers 1.3m/s MAE (mean absolute error) for 24h ahead wind prediction and 11% Normalized MAPE (mean absolute percentage error) for 24h ahead energy forecast. If you look up these numbers in the energy forecasting industry you will find out that they are pretty impressive. They also refer to individual wind turbines and not to aggregate wind farm level forecasts. These are the 2 main competitive advantages of the platform. A modelling exercise shows that this platform can yield additional $4M per year for a 1GW wind farm. The global installed wind power capacity is 591 GW. The platform is built using latest technologies and best practices of software development – it is easily scalable and maintainable. This means it can quickly integrate new customers and geographic areas. It uses a combination of Numerical Weather Prediction inputs, real time measurements and at the core contains a unique modelling of the spatial data. The platform has proven business value - I am a technical person handling the development and I need to find a trusted partner that will drive the business aspects of the project including sales, business development, fundraising and overall go-to-market strategy. Any ideas or advice on how to move this forward? [link] [comments] |
are there fundamental business truths? Posted: 23 Aug 2020 11:12 AM PDT things that people believe are universally true and are true(competitive advantage being a key aspect, ecy)? thing that you believe to be universally true but others may not? your belief of the general path to a profitable business? For instance, I believe 'differentiated customer's experience(i.e luxury/niche) OR general customer's experience (i.e mass market) ' is the 'only' acceptable end goal. Building a business system that emphasis customer experience and building products(and brands) with features that are tailored to making customer's experience better. If you can tweak to get product market fit (snowball customer base till it is effectively attracting a more mainstream customer) then you have a cash flowing business. imo, that my mindset. If you can make a overwhelmingly great experience that is better than direct competitors, and promote it properly, have good margins, and so on, you will be able to incrementally move to better customer segments, and eventually work to product market fit(seeing profitable business result of $100k profit and growing) , and into a very profitable or better yet highly lucrative business. How do I start my own Whiskey/ bourbon brand Posted: 23 Aug 2020 10:53 AM PDT Is it possible anyone would be willing to assist me in the initial steps of building my own whiskey/bourbon brand. I am new to the scene and there's not a lot of information out that I have found to be extensively useful. I have looked into several distilleries; sadly haven't heard back from any of them. I plan on sourcing the alcohol just because of the initial cost, although that may hurt my profit I see it as being the best start. Please if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. I thank you in advance and appreciate your time. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Aug 2020 02:05 PM PDT Hey. I'm an IT Director at a tech based company that no longer needs its AWS account loaded with $5000 credit. As the IT Director I've been given full access and now own it. I don't really have a use for it and understand that people are struggling during the current pandemic. I can sell it to someone who needs it for $1000. Before you call it a scam, consider the facts that: I don't need it, would rather have someone have it than the account going to waste and I'm just going to buy equipment for my new podcast with the money. I have a screenshot to prove I own the account but the quality of the screenshot is low. Message me if you're interested. I'm only taking PayPal. NB: I have tried selling this account on different subreddits. Also I didn't really know what flair would suit this post but I was forced to put one. [link] [comments] |
I made a video to help fellow my friends figure out how to build the right kind of product Posted: 23 Aug 2020 10:11 AM PDT Hey everyone, As a guy who's officially been in the startup game for a year now, I can attest that while I am far from where I want to be or what you'd consider successful yet, I have learned a lot in that time. I originally made this video for my friends ( I've had 2-3 ask me similar question ) talking about how to build a startup that doesn't suck and that people will actually care about. I thought this video might also be helpful to some folks in here so here it is https://youtu.be/NHkpIACeUa4 This is something I'm very passionate so I welcome any feedback as well from the more experienced Entrepreneur on what things did I get wrong and insight to improve my understanding. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Funding your 401K in light of economic climate. Posted: 23 Aug 2020 10:00 AM PDT My husband started a company two years ago and it is doing great. We are both in our early 50s. We have substantial funds in the stock market well diversified (so he tells me). This is our life's savings. Because the 401K provides a tax advantage, we continue to fully fund the max. Is this still timely advice or should we reconsider where we put funds? As small business owners, how do you balance your personal savings strategy to help your money grow but to also not lose it all before you want to stop working? [link] [comments] |
