The state of Tennessee dissolved my LLC because I did not refile. If I were to open an LLC with the same name out of state, will this cause issues?

Not really interested in opening in Tennessee again. I let the state dissolve because of my misunderstanding of franchise, excise tax, and I intend on looping back on this ASAP.

But I would like to eventually reopen a new LLC with the same name in another state and conduct business throughout the US. Will this be an issue?

Big cartel vs Shopify vs Etsy ?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 10:20 PM PDT

I will be starting an online boutique selling handcrafted items and already have a couple of people interested in buying. Since I am purchasing the items from a different country and paying other types of fees I don't want to have to pay even more fees and list my items at prices that are too high in order to break even. I have been doing a lot of investigation and am realizing that Etsy might not be the best choice. I heard their fees increased and I don't feel comfortable with a large amount being taken out of each purchase someone makes. I was considering Shopify but $30 monthly for a new business is pretty tough and then I heard about big cartel being only $10 a month and still receiving positive reviews ? What are the major pros and cons between these 3?

For Etsy I didn't need a business license or EIN I'm pretty sure but will I need it for the other websites ?

Does Etsy take care of more things vs me having my own website ?

Thanks for the feedback ! Also if I decide to do the website should I be charged the monthly fee on my personal credit card or is it best to open a business account ?

Business License for Etsy? Selling from NJ

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 09:48 PM PDT

Hi. I will be selling handmade items such as jewelry and other handmade items.

I am based out of NJ and am still in between Etsy and a Spotify because of the fees and the monthly amount.

I was reading that I don't really need anything for Etsy I can basically just start selling tomorrow while if I do Spotify I am pretty sure I need a bunch of permits.

Idk if I am in the position to open as an LLC and then pay the $800 annual fee. I'm pretty confused on which route to take. Especially with registering my business

First time buying wholesale .. should I put it on personal card or get a business account ?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 10:23 PM PDT

I will be opening up a small online store and am purchasing my items from independent vendors in South America. I will be paying shipping and probably customs I'm pretty sure. I was going to put it all on my regular credit card but after further investigation I'm realizing it might not be the best option later on. The amount of the products before the shipping and customs fee is probably around $200-300. This is my first time ordering and also setting up the business so I am a bit confused. I also don't know if I need to register in NJ or if I can just sell as is on either Etsy or big cartel website ?

    Thank you !

    Building Business Credit

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 08:03 PM PDT

Hello, I recently started my LLC a few weeks ago and was looking to start building my business credit. Would this best be done with a business credit card or opening a tradeline that reports to the business credit bureaus? I want to apply for the Chase Ink Business card (have personal and business checking, as well as person credit cards).

Hosting on an E-commerce site like Shopify or Etsy

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 09:27 PM PDT

Context- (23F) later this year, I plan to open up my business where I plan to sell my handmade knitted baby clothes & accessories.

Creating I'm researching on the creation of a LLC & a business bank account reqs. & process. With that being said, I'm still in the beginning phase of research but would appreciate any advice around the following questions.

    • What services have you used to set up your LLC?

    • based on my use case, would it best to set up an e-commerce store or sell on an existing platform like Etsy? Some advantages/disadvantages

    • lastly what are your experiences selling on Etsy &/ Shopify platforms

Side note: I already have a food/travel blog & a comp sci. Degree so I'm not too worry about the learning curve of web designing- just wondering what be best in terms of cost for value.

    TIA 😌

How to Auto Assign Lead to Nearest Contractor

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 09:25 PM PDT

    Hey Reddit

I'm looking into Workiz which looks like a promising all in one platform to be able to make and receive phone calls, send invoices, accept payments, scheduling, etc.

It looks great so far because it has open source API so I am going to see if my developer might be able to achieve what I'm looking for.

But before I commit to one platform vs another, I'm looking for something in particular and seeing as I'm always going on reddit for information, I thought, let me ask and see if anyone might know anything or could point me in the right direction?

Here's what I'm trying to achieve.

When a user/customer visits my website, they fill out a questionnaire or web form. They submit their information and booking request along with payment. The appointment details are then immediately forwarded to our nearest subcontractor who fits the job criteria. The subcontractor sees the request and is able to confirm or deny. If accepted, the booking is confirmed and details are sent to all parties. If denied, it will forward the booking info to the next available contractor. Until it's accepted and confirmed.

    Does anyone know??

Is there another thread where I could post this??

I tried to do this my own way through Acuity Scheduling + Pipedrive + Zapier + texting platforms but I just wasn't able to figure it out because I need a way to receive texts/notifications from the contractor as well and I was only able to send texts/notifications.

Workiz is a platform that's looking pretty promising. Everything I'm looking for plus some additional features which I think are cool. But what I'm looking for in terms of auto assignment is a secret sauce that I haven't been able to find out there. I think I'm just looking in the wrong space. I did find a platform actually called "Lead Assign" but holy crap it's expensive.

I should mention I'm hoping most of this automation can be done electronically and avoid phone calls.

Workiz forces me to assign a contractor manually (human labor) vs automation. Just seems like it could all be reduced to seconds vs minutes with auto assignment.

Hopefully the solution to this will help others down the road.

    Thank you kindly

    E-commerce platforms

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 11:17 PM PDT

Hey all. First time posting in this sub.

I am planning to launch my first product this year. I wanted to ask what e-commerce platforms you would recommend?

Amazon FBA is likely to be our primary. We are not adverse to Ebay either but would prefer that made up less than 10% of our sales.

We will also have a shopify store linked to Facebook and Instagram marketing.

Anywhere else that might be worth looking at?

    Thanks in advance guys

I would like to hear some tips and tricks everyone uses (preferably free or low cost) to help gain traffic on your business website? Also, I launched my business July 9, 2020 and today is August 6, 2020. What is a good/normal profit after taxes are calculated for a brand new business after the first month or two?

Use tax question on online memberships for TX LLC

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 12:05 AM PDT

Hi, I've been charged 10$ for a monthly membership from a California based online service for their premium features (e.g. provides access to exclusive content), but charge doesn't include any sales tax. During TX sales reporting, there's section called 'taxable purchases' that identifies amount of taxable goods for TX businesses which are not charged sales tax by out of states sellers and allows to pay taxes on. Does anybody have clue whether case above is subject to this amount? I will save this question for CPA before my next period filing but thank you for early hints.

Spreadsheet template for inventory management and cost/margin calculations

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 04:30 PM PDT

My wife is starting an online retail shop for homewares - hasn't yet launched, still in the process of setting up. So all costs and no revenue just yet!
Can anyone recommend a good (ideally free...?) spreadsheet we can use to manage our initial inventory and easily calculate total costs of goods (eg. Inclusive of shipping/tariffs/etc.) so we can work out our products pricing structure in a logical way? Fingers crossed we grow enough to need a proper software solution for this type of thing, but at this stage just after something pretty basic to get us started.

    Looking for guidance please

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 03:46 AM PDT

    Hi Everyone,

I'm working on starting a business as I really need a side hustle to pay bills and after many hours of research still can't find out how people find manufacturers for products. For example- if I had a toy in mind- how do I find a manufacturer to make it? Clothing- how do I find someone to sew it?

    Any suggestions?

Designing product model using thin plastic sheets

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 11:57 PM PDT

I'm working on a phone accessory design that requires a simple plastic part that I think can be made of 1/32" PVC (or similar plastic) sheets. Besides cutting to shape, one end of the plastic sheet needs to be heat-shaped to have a soft-edged 90 degree lip.

My question is, what's the best approach to achieving this lip with a small budget? Do I outsource to asia? Do I get some basic equipment like a heat gun? Is there another option I'm missing? I'm still in the development/design stage so really only looking for a smaller quantities for now until design is finalized.

My second question is, if the models turn out well and I'm happy with design, is outsoursing such a simple task (single 90 degree pend per sheet) to China my best bet? Any advice is welcome!! Thanks again :)

Will $24 set a small buisness back by a lot?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 03:04 AM PDT

I know the topic isnt about business but hear me out. I requested a $24 book and they ordered it for me. They didnt charge me or anything but told me it would take a few months to get to them and deliver it to me. Earlier today i found the same book for cheaper and they had it on hand. I dont know which one to buy since the latter is a pretty big company and i dont want to cause any problems for the 1st store because i had already bought from them previously. The question is kind of stupid but i really trust the small business but want the book asap

    Business Idea Critiques Wanted

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 10:51 PM PDT

I had an idea a while back and wrote some notes: consultation services to lower expenses though a percentage of what is saved is paid to service. Alleviates pointless expenses (renting/leasing certain things like WiFi modems) and those unnecessary to life style (changing phone plans) and adjusts accordingly. After that, attacks debts based on interest and amount. I'm curious how viable this actually sounds to other people. I was thinking that it seemed that a decent amount of legal paperwork would be needed so people actually pay what a percentage of what they saved. Thanks!

Best free/low-cost e-commerce platform? Etsy vs Woocommerce vs PrestaShop vs Square vs Weebly

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 03:34 PM PDT

EDIT: Also considering OpenCart! Forgot that one

Hi there. I'm looking to open up a clothing shop online - not exactly sure how many products (5-20+). I've been googling for hours on best websites to host it on and have narrowed it down to these 5. (I know Etsy isn't exactly the same as the others, but I included it in case anyone had an opinion).

The shop is based in Canada and I'm looking for the best free or lowest cost website. I don't have any coding or web design experience but I can learn.

Also, if anyone knows of any of these that don't have their name affixed to the end of the link (eg. xxxbusiness.weebly.com) pls let me know! I can't seem to find any info about stuff like that on the websites.

    Any advice is helpful :)

Possible to make 200k with bookkeeping business?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 06:07 PM PDT

I'm 18 and after graduating with my accounting degree it is my dream to own an bookkeeping firm. I was just wondering if it is possible to make 200k per year with 4-5 employees.

Would it be possible if I focused on small business like local plumbers and barber shops. Let's say you charge on average 400 per month and you have 4 employees that can handle 25 clients each. That's 480,000 per year. Then you take 200k and theres 280k left for 4 employees which 70,000 per employee. Just some rough math. I might be wrong? Do you think this is possible?

Any advice or tips would be appreciated 🙏

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 11:07 AM PDT

Hey guys! I'm a student however in my free time I run a hobby business, I recently started selling some of my handcrafted products on Etsy, I went around and promoted the page to multiple people, gaining 230 views in under a week however I've had no sales, I've had tones of people who have said to me "I love you're products 100% buying one" however none sold... I'm not sure what I'm missing/doing wrong, is it because my page is new and I only have 2 products on there? Is it my pricing? I'm lost any advice would be great :)

Considering a HELOC for a small business start up.

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 02:51 PM PDT

For a number of years I have been strongly considering starting my own business. I've been looking through my options for financing the purchase of equipment which will come out to approximately $30k. The best offer I've had from a bank has no closing costs, up front fees, appraisal fees, or early termination fees. I will be required to make interest only payments, which will provide an extra layer of comfort while I spend the time becoming familiar with the equipment and start producing inventory, at which point I can start paying down the principal. My home is an estimated 285k with 210k principal outstanding. There is a growing fear as I get older (30yo) that I could potentially be missing my opportunity. If I had planned better ahead of time I would have capital saved up for the purchase... But unfortunately that is not the case.

The purchase is a CNC machine, something I not only went to school for, but I've been in the field for 6 nearly 7 years now. The idea is to set the machine up, take some time to do test cuts, get a feel for the machine and then start looking for additional work. I do have a product planned already, that should generate a small amount of cash flow fairly quickly (3-4mo, absolute worst case) after purchase would be the absolute MAX, but hopefully within a month to a month and a half I will be rolling.

One of the benefits of CNC manufacturing are the diverse number of industries you can choose from. It gives room for redirection if you decide a product isn't generating enough interest. This takes time and would be one of the great benefits of being able to make an interest only payment, if absolutely necessary.

Saving is an option, but is also going to take a considerable amount of time. Time, in my opinion, is also considered a risk in the total assessment.

    Any input is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.
