"Equity investors continue to express cautious optimism on the direction of the economy and progress with the virus," said Mark Hackett, chief of investment research at Nationwide.

In a statement, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative said that both sides made "progress and are committed to taking the steps necessary to ensure the success of the" phase one trade deal. The agreement being discussed between China and the US would ensure 'greater protection for intellectual property rights, remove impediments to American companies in the areas of financial services and agriculture, and eliminate forced technology transfer.' Even another coronavirus spike in the fall won't derail Wall Street's rally, says Jeremy Siegel

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 06:52 AM PDT

    https://www.cnbc.com/2020/08/25/jeremy-siegel-coronavirus-spike-in-the-fall-wont-derail-stock-rally.html

A spike in coronavirus cases this fall would not seriously impair the stock rally on Wall Street, according to Wharton School professor Jeremy Siegel.

"It's not going to be a serious correction, not anywhere again down near those March lows," Siegel said on CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Tuesday.

Siegel believes value stocks may outperform tech next year, but added that there is "room really for both groups to go up in 2021."

Things Ive learned in my trading journey

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 03:07 PM PDT

Becoming a successful trader is one of the most difficult career choices anybody can make. Although the potential for success is enormous, achieving consistent profitability is extremely difficult. I'm sure at some point, for all of us who navigate these tricky waters, at some point or another we doubted the choice to trade. However, if one participates in the context of a winning strategy and mindset, the stock market can become a very rewarding place.

Consider that pretty much you can zoom out a graph for any asset, and pick any time in history to buy pretty much anything and eventually that purchase would've handed you a return if held long enough. Of course there are exceptions, and some wins are bigger than others, but in the general sense, the stock market is always going up because economies are always growing in the broad trend even if they might have their slumps that can last for years.

In any case, here are 5 tips and secrets that I have learned in my 3 year journey that have helped me so far to navigate the markets:

    1. The Stock Market is 99% psychology and 1% technical: The real secret behind reading candlestick charts, which you should be using if trading, is that they represent the behaviour of the actors who are buying and selling the asset and not necessarily the performance of that asset. Every single piece of news, rumor, earnings call, or anything else can be interpreted from reading the charts. So try to understand the people better than the companies. But most importantly understand yourself the most.
    2. Making money is better than being right: At the end of the day Losing money makes you wrong, and making a profit makes you right. As traders and investors it is our job to understand and participate in the market that is present at the moment, it is not our job to agree with it.
    3. Scaling into trades is good: once you have decided the full position of a given play you are going to make, buy a third of that. There is a real difference between averaging down a winning play and adding to a loser. So make sure that trades are valid, and add to your winners and cut your losers.
    4. Learn from your losses: If you can take a lesson for everytime you lose, then soon you will be making very few mistakes and those losers might as well be considered an investment or tuition. If we lose, don't learn, and keep repeating the same mistakes, it will get expensive very quickly and our participation will come to an abrupt end.
    5. Always have a plan B: you should never put yourself in a position where if you are wrong, it will be catastrophic. There are no sure bets, we have all seen companies go down on earnings beats, others go up with dismal performances, media manipulation, accounting scandals, political situations, natural disasters, pandemics and the lot that can make any sure bet go haywire. You can never know what the future holds so always be prepared and position yourself in order to survive to see another day.

'Deal of a decade': How buying TikTok could transform Microsoft

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 07:22 PM PDT

    https://finance.yahoo.com/news/deal-decade-buying-tiktok-could-213000201.html

But for Microsoft, if TikTok were paired with LinkedIn, which has 20% of U.S. adults using the platform, the company would have the footing to compete in the world of social media against top dog Facebook. Microsoft purchased LinkedIn in 2016 for $26.2 billion.

Adding TikTok would make Microsoft a major player in the digital ad business, which currently has 70% of market share going to Google, Facebook, and Amazon, according to eMarketer.

Among 18 to 24 year-olds, only 17% use Microsoft-owned LinkedIn. For TikTok, that number is more than double at 42%. Only Instagram (82%), Twitter (46%), and Facebook (46%) have a greater reach with young adults.

$ACI...can this boring grocery stock make us rich?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 03:01 PM PDT

Currently, $ACI is trading at $14.55, or a miniscule P/E of 7.99x after it's IPO in late June. Insiders earlier this month, including the CEO (former Pepsi executive) bought shares when it dipped under $15. Jim Cramer told investors on Mad Money before the IPO that it was a buy under $25. The average target price from Yahoo Finance is $19.75 (35% upside) and they said they also plan to distribute a dividend. Nearly all of the large cap U.S. banks are also invested in this company. In short...what am I missing?

    Astrazeneca and covid-19

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 03:31 PM PDT

    astrazeneca

My friend who is a nurse, but also interested in the stock market told me I should look into AstraZeneca since according to his sources, a lot of countries are purchasing their current product for covid-19. I tried looking around on reddit, and most of the content I was able to find seemed to be related to that it was kind of betting AstraZeneca would be on the forefront of the vaccine about 70-90 days ago.

When I'm looking at the news now, a lot of news revolving AstraZeneca seems to be that they are rolling out trials. From the little I know about new drugs, it's usually that the simultaneously roll out and trial the product.

My question is then maybe if there's anyone else that has looked into AstraZeneca? And if so, because I feel like my knowledge about the stock market and the pharmaceutical companies is quite limited, if there's any major blind spot I'm missing?

How will Alibaba stock be affected if Alipay IPO price soars

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 07:47 AM PDT

Alibaba is a major shareholder of Alipay, which is planning on going public soon. Theoretically if Alibaba owned 30% of shares of Alipay and Alipay's stock soared 100% in a year, would that have an affect on the price of the Alibaba stock itself?

Something interesting I found [Noob Warning]

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 10:47 AM PDT

I was looking through the top movers, not to buy, but just to see what's going on today out of curiosity, and I found this. I'm open to learning more and I haven't seen this before.

$TAP.A (Molson Coors Beverage but not $TAP) went up 17.02% today to $55/share.

The volume today was 225 shares, with an average volume of 88. From July 9th to August 21st the volume was effectively 0. I haven't even seen volume that low in penny stocks, much less high valued companies. I've only seen volume that low on OTC companies. The stat sheet also said that the market cap is $11.92B, which doesn't seem right for volume that low. Here are my questions.

    1) What is the relation between $TAP and $TAP.A? Both are listed as Molson Coors Beverage, but the prices, volume, and market caps are vastly different.

    2) Why would anyone buy $TAP.A if the volume is essentially nothing? What function does $TAP.A serve?

    3) Why is the market cap of $TAP.A so high compared to the volume? By my math, there should be 216.7M shares of $TAP.A for the market cap to be $11.92B at $55/share. Where are all those shares if only 88 are exchanged on average and it goes weeks without any movement? The market cap of $TAP, which has much more activity, is also billions lower than $TAP.A.

Again, I know these are noob questions. I'm just curious. I don't intend to buy this at all, I just want to know what it is and why. Sorry if this is in the wrong subreddit.

Stock newbie here just trying to get all the basics down. At what point is a stock considered to be too volatile to be worth investing in when day trading?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 02:50 PM PDT

Like the title suggests, I don't know much but I want to learn more so I could toy around in my own time (I'm a high school senior just FYI so any and all tips are appreciated) and this was one issue I just kept being uncertain about especially since I don't fully understand how volatility is mathematically calculated.

Do you guys think the AAPL 5G phone launch and it's sales are priced in or no?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 05:20 PM PDT

Anybody who isn't a naysayer who sat out the price rises and is now salty knows that AAPL is going up. I'm just wondering what people's opinions are as to how much it's going up? Do you guys think the 5G phone launch is priced in or is AAPL going to continue it's monster trajectory and record another year of 100% gain (or close to that)?

It's already up 67% this year.

Breaking -- TEVA Charged fFor Generic Drugs Price-Fixing Probe

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 11:39 AM PDT

U.S. Poised to Charge Teva in Generic Drugs Price-Fixing Probe

    Aug. 25, 2020, 2:16 PM

U.S. prosecutors are preparing to charge Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. with conspiring with competitors to raise prices for generic drugs, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The Justice Department is planning to charge Teva as soon as Tuesday after the company rebuffed a settlement that would have required paying a criminal penalty and admitting wrongdoing, said the person, who declined to be named because the matter is confidential.

A spokesperson for Teva, which is based in Israel, declined to comment.

    https://news.bloomberglaw.com/pharma-and-life-sciences/u-s-poised-to-charge-teva-in-generic-drugs-price-fixing-probe

    Earlier,

Drug firm bets it won't be charged

In the coming days, the Justice Department will decide whether to file criminal charges against one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies suspected of colluding with rivals to inflate the prices of widely used drugs.

The company, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, is betting that in the middle of a deadly pandemic, the Trump administration won't dare to come down hard on the largest supplier of generic drugs in the United States.

It is a high-stakes gamble that could affect millions of Americans who rely on Teva's dozens of inexpensive generic drugs, as well as its brand-name products like Copaxone, for multiple sclerosis, and Ajovy, for migraines. Teva officials say criminal charges could cripple the Israeli company and potentially leave it unable to sell drugs to federal programs like Medicare.

For years, the Justice Department and state prosecutors have been investigating what they describe as a conspiracy by pharmaceutical companies to increase the prices of popular drugs. The department has already extracted guilty pleas and $224 million in penalties from four other drug companies.

Lawyers for Teva, which prosecutors believe was deeply involved in the conspiracy, until recently had been holding settlement negotiations with officials in the Justice Department's antitrust division. But in April, the company all but walked away from the talks, according to people on both sides of the discussions.

How do I know I’m not investing long term using margin?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 12:33 PM PDT

I'm using IB, and I've been investing long term for the past 2 years, adding monthly to an index. Slow and steady.

Then last week I wanted to have some excitement in my life and jump on AAPL and TSLA. So I pulled everything out of my initial indices and 100% put them in these 2.

First day was fun, sold end of day for some quick profits.

Second day, I learned about settlement time of 2 days..... so I couldn't use any of my funds to trade more...

Once settled, I got into putting 100% in other stocks again, and that was fun too.

Then I learned that I have a cash account and if I get a margin account, I don't have to wait 2 days anymore and could do this daily. So I upgraded.

Now the question is, yesterday and today I was able to trade in a row because of this account (using 100% yesterday and again 100% today. Selling same day), but what if I want to get back to investing long term? How do I know I'm using my own cash and not the high interest borrowed money?

I never saw a notification before a trade today saying "hey, you're not using your own cash right now because of yesterday's trade, you'll have it settled in 2 days, for now do you want to use borrowed money Y/N?"

So how do I know if I ever want to revert back to long term investments with my own cash?
