Friends don’t have your best interest at heart

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 01:21 PM PDT

This started when I did a design for someone a good friend.I did the work agreed on payment and I did my part.Cut to now I haven't been able to get ahold of them until no through email.Ive had deaths in the family and other stuff but I held my end of the bargain. This friend finally responds with this him acting like I'm unconvincing him.Add to that my phone was destroyed to where I couldn't even get my cash app info...so he says it's my fault too...he's losing money because of me...By then I said I'm done I did my job,I have everything documented from the printers to fed ex...I said don't worry about payment and if he wants my services in the future go through my Fiverr and my paypal business account..My biggest thing was him thinking I'd give him a free logo design...I quoted my prices and he wasn't hearing that. Now dealing with this I learned contracts and deposits for anyone and everyone.I know my work is great and I will not be low balled and I neither should you.i even offered to refer him to someone else and the quotes he got were way more than what I was gonna charge.Ive also added a kill clause if you aren't responding or being an ass like he was I terminate the services and keep my deposit.

    I really need some advice....

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 07:35 AM PDT

    (24M) Hey everyone.

Im kinda stuck on what I want to do.

I'm looking to start a side business of some sort to eventually get some financial freedom, but I'm not sure what to get into that will give me some type of success. (I've tried the little get rich quick schemes you see on the YouTube ads and as you would assume, they didn't work.) I'm tired of the pyramid scheme games, I just want to find something that I know is legit. I'm a hard worker all I need is to find something I can put my all into and it be lucrative.

I have about 9k saved up that I can use to invest into business ventures. Do y'all have any good recommendations? I've been thinking about selling things on Amazon but I'm stuck on what product to sell.

    Any type of advice helps!

[Edit] Thanks everyone for the good advice! Didn't think I'd get this much feedback. Have a good idea of what I'm gonna get into.

    Credit Card Debt

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 02:18 PM PDT

I have a small manufacturing business located in a rural area. We are a welding, fabricating, machine shop and do a lot of work for farmers, mining companies, and oil and gas companies.

Covid 19 affected our work in the worst way. While we didn't have to totally shut down we did have to lay off some help and cut pretty much all spending unless it was a job expense. When things were busy and life was good about a year and a half ago we used a 0% interest credit card to try to expand on some inventory and give us alittle more operating capital as we grew. Fast forward to March of this year our work dried up and we did not have this card paid off fully due to pretty much all our back log dissappearing.

I am still currently paying on it what I can but at 17.24% interest it seems like I am getting no where. The card company won't lower the rate anymore. I'd like to know if there's another route I could go to try to get a lower interest rate such as a bank loan or maybe someone out there who's offering 0% on balance transfer. Thank you for any good advice in advance.

My partner has recently just secured a job as a property manager in the UK . She is currently managing 50 units( due to rise to 75 by the end of the year) all by herself for a small development company on a self employed contract, making 20k she has being giving absolute control of the whole unit and does literal everything required to managing and marketing the properties . I see this as a great way to build a business for her in which she can acquire more unit and make a business of it . I know nothing about properties i would like to know how i can support her in to turning what she currently has in to a successful business.

Questions about paperwork for making a small business.

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 09:39 PM PDT

I (25 F, California) am trying to get all my permits and licenses for running a home bakery out of my kitchen. I have my Cottage Food Application ready to go, as well as a business permit that I need to fill out and send, and I also got a Federal EID. Does Federal EID serve as a State ID too or would I need to get ahold of one of those separately? I just want to make sure I have everything figured out, and I would greatly appreciate anyone's help.

    Parking Lot Line Striping Business

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 03:38 PM PDT

Hey Team, Ive been doing a bunch of research on line striping. It seems very simple and straight to the point. I want to start my business as a side hustle and eventually scale it. (I want to quit my full time job) Has anyone had experience with this or know someone who has? I found a few starter machines that were decently priced. I thought about doing my first few jobs for free for practice & word of mouth. Any ideas if this a good idea? Thank you.

Which Groupon-like businesses are popular now?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 09:15 PM PDT

Doing some research... which Groupon-like businesses (where you give a very good front-end offer like 80% discount on 1st massage, 1st back-fix, 1st cyro etc) are performing the best this year & will continue to be popular in the next 1-3 years?

I know spa centers right now have certain limitations due to covid-19 like no sauna, pool etc and seem to have less visitors currently.

Trying to help, became manager and everything in between

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 08:39 PM PDT

This is my first time asking for advice from Reddit users but I thought i would get some outside opinions.

Long story short, in Jan 2019 I was asked to help a friend with their business, it's an industry that thrives on volunteers to help them take care of daily classes.

I had been volunteering for several things over the years, from website development to video editing and event management.

In 2019 there was a restructuring that was desperately needed and I have the financial management skills and the information about the organization that was needed to help keep the business open.

At first I was doing it to just help keep the doors open (they wouldn't have made it without my help, this is known). And i was glad to do it because the owner is a friend and my wife benefits greatly from the service it provides. She also volunteers alot for this business.

But in 2019 after the successful restructuring, I took on a much much much larger role. I have basically been given the reigns to manage every aspect of the business with the support of the owner. He basically follows my lead.

For the first 9 months of 2019 i wasn't paid at all. Because of the restructuring it wasn't possible (i handle the finances and the books so I know this for certain). And in September, I started to get paid a small amount per month. $250/week.

We were supposed to adjust my pay in March of 2020 but with the Pandemic, everything was put on hold.

I never stopped working and now that we have reopened (today actually), i spent a good portion of the last 5 months working on the business, new software implementation, new pricing , scheduling, programs and more. Again with no pay.

So last week I asked to be made partner because my responsibilities have evolved exponentially and I have dedicated my time, effort and money to getting this business off the new ground, and the owner agreed it was a good idea and he would come back with a %.

I also have my own project that I have been unable to work on because of this business and I have a medical condition that only allows me so much energy each day. So I can't do this, work, and that all at the same time...and he knows this.

Today he suggest 10% and to make me treasurer. I am already the Financial and Business Development Manager because i basically take care of everything. He has no tech skills and his business management abilities are also quite lacking. He is my friend and I want to make this a success with him. And I know we can...even eventually open more locations.

My issue is that I feel offended by his offer. This is a new business because i did the restructuring for him, so I have been the main person behind all of it from before it started anew. And he was able to restructure because of me.

I am not asking for 50% because he does have a sizable personal investment. But i was hoping he would at least offer 25% considering how much I have personally invested in time, effort, expertise etc. He is a very sweet and generous man but could be clueless when it comes to these types of things, so I am sure he didn't mean to "low ball" me.

Am i asking too much or I am asking too little?

Just need some other points of view. Thanks in advance.

Hiring an IT guy. What do?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 04:51 PM PDT

I've become inundated with minor Technical related issues at work, and I'm currently interviewing for someone to help me with a few things:

    • managing active directory (all the users)

    • managing hardware

    • managing our software & assist with transitioning to new

    • overall small technical issues that employees have

Does anyone have any experience in hiring?

About 30 employees spread out in around 5 locations.

Any advice on what reports I should ask for (other than my software)?

I know at this point this is extremely broad, but I really would appreciate any advice whatsoever.. or sharing of any experience.

    ShopHellBound Experiences

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 07:48 PM PDT

I need to know what other people have experianced from this small shop. I ordered a halter top from them on may 22nd, at that point it was a 4-6 week wait as they are handmade. When covid hit, which was way before may 22nd, the shop said they couldn't get their supplies and that the wait would be boosted to 6-8 weeks. However, they continued to make other products and then had multiple "halter top" drops afterwards. To me, if you couldn't get the supplies for products already sold and being waited for, why are you selling more? How are you making them? I've noticed so many shady things going on and i have started screenshotting all of these things. People who commented about their halter tops are having their comments deleted. Post comments are being turned off entirely for certain posts. They're now blaming the USPS for the wait, and while the USPS is having issues i still feel like something is wrong here especially because i also own a small business that ships primarily through the USPS and the way she is saying the USPS is to blame, to me, feels like more excuses. My shipping label was created 16 days ago, and this when they said they shipped. When USPS receives an item, there is an update saying so. I noticed BIG accounts are getting their items first. The wait time for halter tops has since been put back down to 4-6 weeks as apparently they have hired extra help... but it has been well over 4-6 weeks... well over 6-8 weeks even. It has been almost 15 WEEKS since i placed this order. I just need to know other peoples thoughts. I feel like i have been scammed. They posted an FAQ saying if you "send a nice email maybe your order will going out faster ;)" which to me is WRONG as orders should be sent out how they are placed. I really just need to know if other people are having issues and if anyone else feels this way? I will never be purchasing from this shop again.

Any advice to solve my scheduling problem?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 07:24 PM PDT

Hi, team lead from a small logistics business. I have 15 staff under my supervision and I schedule their shifts on excel. It takes me forever to finalize the schedules and when I do, a bunch of staff cancel or want to switch the shifts. I then have to go back into the sheet and redo it. I know that using a software can be a solution but it gets expensive and needs some management on my side too. I've had a few meetings to discuss some tools but of course they were trying to push the benefits.

So, is it really cost/time efficient to use a specific software or should we better wait for expansion?

Not wanting to continue with business partner

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 10:20 AM PDT

I run a web publishing company (i.e. I run websites). My friend also works in publishing. He was having a hard time financially two years ago so I offered to make a website with him (under my company).

We agreed to do work 50/50 and split the profits 60/40 (60 to me, 40 to him). The profits were split like that as I have a lot of experience with this (it's my full time job) and bring all the valuable/essential skills to the table (development, design, affiliate partnerships, SEO knowledge, etc).

The website has done fairly well and is bringing in several thousand per month now. For the past year or so, I've really not wanted to continue working with him as a business partner.

The thing is, he's not a BAD business partner, it's just that everything he does takes more time and can be done by the people I outsource work to (for the rest of my business) for a 1/10th of the effective price he gets paid for it.

Most of the work he does has to be reviewed by me and there's no way he'd be able to run a website like this on his own. It just feels like having him around is not worth it - he doesn't do anything that I can't. This was fine when it was more me helping a friend, but now he doesn't need help, I realize how much of a bad deal this was.

There are also a few things to do with his general mentality that I don't like, for example in the past week:

    • He suggested that we have a concealed ad placement (e.g. we make something seem as-if it isn't an ad) which is just completely against mine and my company's morals
    • He forgot to respond to a client over email, I reminded him one evening and he said he'd do it the next day (he wasn't busy) because "what does one day matter". That sort of laid back attitude just isn't what I'd apply to my company
    • He's happy to send over a screenshot to a client that isn't very well cropped

All of these things are tiny and weren't issues at all - we didn't run the ad placement, I said he should respond that evening and he did, he started to crop the image correctly after we discussed. But his mentality is different to mine and it's not one I want to run part of my business with.

Lately, I've been holding off on improvements and new content for the website because I don't want to increase its value which would therefore mean he'd have less reason to sell.

I'm at a crossroads here because he's a great friend, just not someone I want to continue doing business with.

I want to approach him and ask if he wants to be bought out. We have discussed selling before and I think his price would be much higher than I can afford to pay, so I'm not sure about this.

We also couldn't sell the website to someone else as the core of it is based on the technology that the rest of my company operates on (and is worth a lot more than this website).

Has anyone been in this situation before? Having a business partner who is OK but you don't want to continue with? Any ideas other than buying him out? Would be great to hear some experiences or just thoughts.

Texas - Clarification on Formation of LLC, Business Address

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 06:01 PM PDT

Hi All i was wondering if the community could help check my understanding:

If I wanted to incorporate an LLC In texas with no members that would be a member-managed LLC where i would put myself and my home address down as the agent for the business. From there things start getting iffy.

Business Address - Is my understanding correct that in order for me to form an LLC in texas, I would need to use a registered agent service. This has me confused cause I've done some research and see there is a home in my neighborhood being used as the business address for a registered address but from what i can see online my home and associated area are zoned for residential. (I'll be calling my city's zoning dept to confirm). Has anyone in this sub used a PO box as their LLC Business Address from what I can tell this isnt allowed.

Can an LLC "Own" Multiple Business - There are 2 Areas of business I would like to operate, Professional Services, and Land/Property rentals. Could I Get away with a DBA per business unit or would I need to have to file LLC's Per.

Advice needed for a newbie selling art

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 06:33 AM PDT

I have been painting for a few years and now I have a few people interested in buying my art.

I've not sold anything ever, never drawn up an invoice even. So I have a few questions, please:

What documentation do I need for each sale?

Invoice? Receipt? Art sales receipt? Certificate of Authenticity? How to care for your art?

How do I get information from client? What information do I need? Is it not a bit awkward asking for address?

Do I need a client to sign anything?

Is everything moving away from paper now? Has coronavirus changed much?

Do I need any extra documents for commission work?

Do I need all the same paperwork for if the art is just a gift?

Are there easy to understand templates for documentation out there?

How does all of the above change if it is a sale in person or online? Can I use the same paperwork?

As I understand it I'll be operating as a sole trader? I don't anticipate making enough money to worry about VAT

I'm from the uk if that makes a difference.

Sorry for all the questions. I'm rather new to all this!

I'm having trouble with keeping collaborators interested in the project we're working on. Why is this happening?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 09:45 AM PDT

I have a small IT business (just me), and mainly, I work on website design and development projects. For more complex situations, I will reach out to someone to help me with tasks that are more complicated. Of course, I will send a brief, and after we settle on the payment specifics, we get to work. In the latest case, he said he worked on an hourly base, so we agreed to start with 5 hours in mind (for this small task)

My problem is that, once the project has started, they seem to lose interest, like keep postponing the work hours, which means I have to repeatedly send messages or emails, asking when will he be able to continue working. This is a problem, especially if the project is high-priority and needs to be finished fast. Also, I feel stressed with having to always reach out like that and feel like the project might stall too much and lose my client.

Maybe it's a problem on my side, not sure what I'm doing wrong here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What to do about clients who awarded the project pre-covid and are delaying due to covid?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 04:09 PM PDT

So I own a video production company and had clients who hired us pre-COVID to make videos for them. Our contract was for 4 videos. We made 2 of the videos pre-COVID and then COVID struck and they've been delaying making the other 2 videos, even though it is possible to shoot now, even with the COVID rules. They paid us 50% already and they were going to pay us the other 50% once the final 2 videos were completed.

What should I do? Should I just make them pay the final 50% even though we didn't make the final 2 videos? They signed a contract for 4 videos and said they were going to pay us 100% for all of them.
