All was nice and easy during the initial lockdown and people driving less. Now that it picked up. I'm getting horrendous claims , total losses , lengthy cov investigations. I wouldn't say I'm sinking as my ratio of open claims to closed claims is good but I'm really considering taking a pay cut going elsewhere for my sanity. Anyone think like this when they started ?

Thoughts on adding a sticky post on insurance pricing?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 08:36 AM PDT

There seems to be a number of posts that come through here that boil down one of two pricing questions:

    1. Am I getting a good deal on the price I pay now?

    Or, similarly,

    1. A hypothetical question on how much they should expect to pay.

The answers to these questions are invariably along the lines of "we don't have enough information to determine the cost, each insurer prices differently, the best way to find out is to get quotes for yourself. "

Rather than having these posts add to the shuffle of (better) questions, how would you feel if the mods added a sticky with a brief explanation of how auto insurance pricing works and how to go about determining a good price? It would weed out these questions, but also be a better resource for those who are actually wondering about the price they pay. Instead of waiting for a reply, they could go straight to the quote process.

View this as a petition of sorts, I think it would benefit the sub and provide for better insurance literacy for those looking to learn more.

    Dumb teenage move

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 03:28 PM PDT

My dumbass 17 year old backed up into an acquaintance's car on the 4th of July. My son has insurance, etc. but didn't want to get into trouble. For no reason that I can fathom (except immature frontal lobe development), the other kid said no problem, he would file it as a hit and run if my son would just pay the $500 deductible. My son though he could do that with his summer job paycheck but did not factor taxes, etc. in his paycheck so no, he doesn't have $500 which is the only reason I now know what happened. I get that my son is an idiot and I'll be going to the DMV with him to revoke his license (parents can do that to minors in my state), but I think what the other kid did is insurance fraud. Am I wrong? I called the kid's mom and she said it's not insurance fraud because her son never told her who hit the car and the insurance is in her name not his (as the parent). My point is what my kid did was stupid; what her kid did was stupid and illegal. Am I wrong? Thanks for any explanation. State: Oregon

Podiatrist Won’t File Preauthorization Form with Insurance

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 03:47 AM PDT

I've been seeing a podiatrist for toe and foot pain (I was born with a broken foot and issues come and go) and he recommended custom orthotics. My insurance covers them in full with prior authorization. When my measurements were taken I had to fill out a form where I checked the box for them to check with my insurance and checked the box to put half down (advice of the MA). I was under the impression they would check with my insurance and the money I put down would go towards other bills. I got a bill in the mail a week and a half ago from the podiatrist office for the remaining $225 for the orthotics plus other charges.

I have BCN of MI insurance and their provider for orthotics is Northwood Inc. I contacted Northwood last Tuesday to see if prior authorization was obtained and they said it was not. Right after that call I called the podiatrist office and asked them to fax what was needed by Northwood. I specifically wrote everything down word for word from the rep at Northwood and read it back to the billing department at the podiatrist office.

I had an appointment last Thursday for plantar wart removal and when I was checking out I was told I had a balance on my account. I paid for the prior wart removal appointment but would not pay the remainder of the orthotics. The lady checking me made a comment that she didn't know the full story as to what was going on but she knew something was happening with my account.

As of Monday I did not hear anything so I called Northwood Inc back to see if they got their fax. Nothing. I tried to call the podiatrist office and the phone wasn't working. I sent an email to the billing department and have yet to hear anything.

I am supposed to go back next Thursday to have another wart treatment, get fitted and pick up my orthotics. I'm not sure I want to pick them up until they file the paperwork as they should be covered in full. Any advice is appreciated on where to go from here.

Parking lot accident and “victim” fled but is now texting me to ask about repairing damages

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 06:28 PM PDT

As I was backing out of a parking space I hit a car. He has some scrapes and a small dent. He didn't want me calling police, to take my insurance info, but after pressing took my name and cell. He jumped in his car and took off before I got the kind of car or license place. 3 young boys in the car. Kid said he would have his mom contact me. I called police on my own and had them record that I called with in the hour of it so I wasn't charged with a hot and run. Now the other driver has texted about "damages" a day later. I asked for his insurance company as that's what my insurance company wanted. Now what? Can he sue me for the damages because he may not have insurance? He hasn't responded since asking for insurance information 6 hours ago. How long does he have to go after me or make a police report? This is all just a weird situation. [MI]

Can my insurance company deny my claim after it's been paid?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 11:46 PM PDT

The title says it all but here is the backstory.

4 months ago I got into an at-fault accident with another car. The roads were a bit wet, i swerved to try and miss something in the road, lost control and veered into his lane. We didn't hit head-on, but sideswiped. My wheels on the left side got hit so i lost steering and slowly slid into a ravine.

We jumped out of our cars, checked to see if the other was ok. No injuries. It's late and neither car is drivable so we get them towed to the closest tow yard. I file a claim the next day. From the start, my the ball gets dropped on my claim time and time again. The claimant gets paid out in like 3 days on their total loss, but they pay him under the wrong coverage, so all of his personal payment information gets emailed to me. I' later learn they paid him out under the coverage they should pay me out under instead of my liability coverage. I call in to let them know the error and they fix it. Meanwhile, it takes almost 30 days for them to get my car inspected despite the fact I had it moved from the tow yard to their direct repair network shop like 2 days after the accident. They rescheduled my inspection no less than 6 times and even after their shop had written an estimate they canceled their assignment and sent out an independent adjuster. Meanwhile, I'd been told the vehicle was a total loss by one manager, and then told that it might not be later on by the other one. At this point im pissed so i file a complaint to the CEO's office.

Ultimately I finally got paid like 25 days after they paid the claimant. I'd answered all the questions. Spoken to several people and done my best to have everything done in via email so i could have a record of it. The CEO's office follows up with me, says they don't' know WTF was going on and why my claim was pushed around like it was but apologized. I make a mental note to find a new carrier and just call it a day.

Today (4months later), I get a reservation of rights letter with the following:

We're investigating your claim to confirm whether the loss is covered under your policy. Please see the enclosed Reservation of Rights and Policy Provisions for information about your policy.

We understand that this is a difficult situation, and we will strive to investigate the claim and provide you with more information in a timely manner.

We're willing to continue with the investigation or settlement of any claim or lawsuit resulting from this incident. However, we will continue only on the condition that our actions will not harm any rights or defenses we currently have under the policy, including rights and defenses that aren't specifically referred to in this letter. Please also note the following:

    · We reserve the right to deny coverage later.

    · We reserve the right to bring legal action to have the rights of the parties decided.

    · We reserve the right to seek reimbursement of any advance if our investigation concludes that there is no coverage afforded under your policy for this incident.

    · Our actions should not be interpreted as waiving or as preventing us from exercising our rights.

    · Our actions should not be interpreted as an acknowledgment of liability or coverage.

    · You may wish to consult your own attorney, at your own expense, about this incident.

We are unable to confirm coverage at this time and are investigating due to the following provisions in the policy contract:

We have attempted repeated contact with you with no success and require additional information in order to complete our investigation. We still need to discuss the facts of the loss and claims process with you as well as record a detailed statement about the accident. As referenced below in your (STATE) auto policy ******, it is your duty to cooperate in the investigation fully. You may reference page 20 of 24 to review your duties after a loss. For your convenience, we have also provided the applicable parts of Part E of your contract below.

PART E - GENERAL PROVISIONS DUTIES AFTER AN ACCIDENT OR LOSS

We will not be required to provide coverage under this policy unless there has been full compliance with the following duties:

    A. We must be notified promptly of how, when, and where an accident or loss happened. Notice should also include the names and addresses of any injured persons and of any witnesses.

    B. A person or entity seeking any coverage or payment of any benefits except payment under Part A - Liability must: 1. Cooperate with us in the investigation, settlement, or defense of any claim or suit.

    My questions are:

    1. Considering my claim has been paid, I notified them the day after the loss and fully cooperated and jumped through all of their hoops, what responsibility do I actually have to cooperate with them?

    a. Important to note here that I haven't heard from them since my claim was paid. I'm not sure what they're talking about with trying to reach me. This is the first letter I've received, and I don't recall getting any calls from them or voicemails. I do not accept calls from unknown numbers or answer numbers I don't know and have a spam blocker on my cell, but if they were calling from the usual 800#, shouldn't be an issue.

    1. Can they deny my claim after they've already paid it? They've taken possession of the car. They've paid off the lien holder and paid me my equity months ago.

    2. Do I need to involve an attorney here? I truly don't trust this company due to how my claim was handled and I feel they're just looking for a reason to try to screw me at this point.

TLDR. Insurance company screwed up my claim from the start causing lots of headache due to their own errors. Finally paid it after a month of back and forth. Now 4 months after payment I get a Reservation of Rights saying I need to cooperate when I already have.

Illinois - car ran into building

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 07:37 PM PDT

A motorist ran thier car into my commerical building causing substantial damage. Repairs are likely to be in excess of 20k. Motorists insurance is intent on only paying depreciated cost. My agent says that is incorrect as it should be a liability claim, not a property claim. I know I can open a claim with my insurance for the difference, but I don't feel like I should have to take a claim on my insurance because the damage wasn't my fault.

We are still in the process of accepting bids for repair. My agent suggests I let motorists insurance know we will not take depreciation cost and will adjudicate if they persist.

I don't want to get the motorist's agents back up because I don't want to deal with them nitpicking everything. But I'm not going to settle for the deprecation.

Should I wait until I get all the contractor bids in first and wait for an offer or straight up inform agent I will adjudicate for anything less than 100% of repairs covered?

    AD banker or ExamFX?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 10:56 PM PDT

I'm in the process of getting hired by a local insurance company (Illinois) but I obviously need to get my licenses. They recommended AD banker and when I asked about examfx they hadn't heard of it but said whatever I felt better about. I'm completely new to insurance, I'd like to preface the search suggestions with that. Does anybody have any experience with both or either of these more recently?

I was planning on doing the middle options for either, that includes flashcards for adbanker and some extra things for examfx (can't remember them all off the top of my head). Adbanker is almost or just about half the price, but I haven't really gotten a ton of reviews on it from reddit and most have been 2+ years old.

If anyone can suggest and inform me on some information I'd greatly appreciate it. I have a few weeks to do this, but if I have 0 previous experience. Which would you recommend for material that does the best job getting you to understand everything?

Also, any tips and resources are appreciated.

Father passed away. HO Insurance denying claim to clean house. Any advice?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 01:38 PM PDT

[FL] Can check my other posts for more info on the situation. I'll keep it short here.

Father passed away a few weeks unexpectedly at home. His body had been there for 1-2 weeks before being discovered. Needless to say, the house is a mess and needs professional hazmat cleaning that I can't do.

I put in a claim with his insurance as they instructed me to. The adjuster got back to me today. He said after speaking to his manager that the claim is going to be denied and he'll send me a written letter with further information. He said that the bodily fluids of the deceased are considered a pollutant and pollutants are not covered by his policy (father has an HO3 policy). He said case law reaffirms their point of view and there's nothing he can do it and it will not be covered. Said he'll send me more info and to expect it in the coming weeks along with the written letter of denial.

I pulled up the policy and it notes "we do not cover... Pollutants on any covered building or other structure. Pollutants include solids, liquid, gaseous, and thermal irritant or contaminants including smoke, vapor, soot, fumes, acids, alkalis, chemicals and waste. Waste includes materials to be recycled, reconditioned, or otherwise reclaimed."

He said if there is any structural damage caused by the death itself, they can cover it. Otherwise, they will not cover the cleaning nor restoration of the room.

I guess how is it a pollutant? You can't recycle, recondition, nor reclaim a dead body.

Any advice on next steps? I'm fresh out of college and can't afford the thousands it will cost to clean the house after I've already spent all my money on funeral fees, lawyers, etc. Any advice would greatly help right now. EVERYBODY keeps assuring me this should be covered, even the cleaning companies I spoke with who said they deal with my dad's insurance regularly. Just extremely overwhelmed a need some advice. I'd hate to lose my family home over this.

    Thanks, all.

Liability insurance on Hertz rental as additional driver

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 08:12 PM PDT

Hi there, I am in a situation where my friend rented a car from Hertz (he has Amex CDW coverage) and added me as an additional driver. Now Amex gives the CDW to the renter and any additional drivers on the contract so I'm covered on that too. Hertz denied the liability insurance to me as I was added mid rental period otherwise I would have to start fresh and make a new contract with them. I approached A-Affordable insurance and they told me that they cannot do a liability insurance on a rental car. Are there any ways I could get a liability insurance on this rental car as an additional driver? I would be driving from Massachusetts to New York. I am added on the contract for close to ten days. Also, is the state minimum already covered for the approved drivers by such rental companies? If yes, what benefit does this liability insurance give additionally?

Diminished value - new car, not at fault (NE-US)

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 07:54 PM PDT

Hi! I am just learning about diminished value and it seems to vary significantly by state. What should my first course of action be?

In June, I was in an accident and deemed not at fault. The other driver's insurance has paid more than $17k to repair my brand new 2020 Honda Odyssey (Elite) which I bought just two months prior. The body shop is still fighting for a few final dollars so I do not yet have the car back - it's been about 7 weeks.

I'm obviously concerned that my beautiful $50k MSRP car is now worthless. I feel like this is a pretty textbook case for some diminished value, as the car was literally brand new.

How do I bring up diminished value to the insurance company? How do I not get screwed?

What are good insurance companies in Canada?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 06:13 PM PDT

What health insurance companies would you guys recommend, I'm from Alberta Canada. Specifically an insurance company that isn't too expensive per month, my husband and I are both in school but I do need to get dental work done which can be very pricey.

Which company would you suggest and why? And if you could rate the company that you've been with say maybe the goods and bad with each it would be super helpful!

I will be calling around but just wanna see some suggestions first.

    Commercial Producer

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 06:08 PM PDT

Hi all! I have an interview for a local smaller independent agency for a producer role. I have been a captive agent and worked for a large Indy brokerage but my primary focus has been personal lines. As a captive I wrote BOPs but nothing too far outside of that.

I was thinking about going after smaller business (subcontractors, niche brick/mortar and start-ups) all which are abundant in my area.

    Couple questions:

Since these are lower premium commercial policies, are these business types worth chasing? What are some effective prospecting methods you have used during the pandemic?

What are some typical comp agreements (Midwest) for a producer in these markets?

    Thanks in advance!

Can I get a separate company to cover me for water/sewer backup?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 01:17 PM PDT

The biggest gotcha for me in shopping for HO insurance is always the water/sewer backup. Many places won't even give me more than 5k, some offer 10k, and very few offer 25k (which I prefer).

When I limit myself to the 25k companies, that really stinks because sometimes the 5k/10k companies will have good base rates, but their water/sewer backup is a fortune. In fact, I just received my renewal for my existing policy, and the water backup is 37% of the entire premium.

Do companies exist that will just cover me for water/sewer backup and I can get my normal HO policy without it, or is that not a thing? I live in Ohio if it matters.

Insurance claim after hail storm in IL

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 04:40 PM PDT

TLDR: My contractor says the majority of 3 sides of my siding need replaced, my insurance is currently only cover 344sqft of one side. My siding would be grossly mismatched, should the pay to paint or replace all of it?

Where: Illinois. What: Hail storm insurance claim on aluminum siding.

Hail storm damaged our home including the roof, gutters, doors, window well covers, and aluminum siding. The adjuster was here and gone in minutes. The estimate they sent back from his appraisal is missing several things, including window well coverings, an awning, a metal garage door and 2 sides of aluminum siding damage, as they only listed 344sqft of the rear side of my home, when in fact 3/4 sides have damaged (which he even marked with chalk).
I assume I'll be taking pictures, and listing in detail what they missed, and why I think it should be covered (any advice here would be helpful too).
My big question is, if they replace a large portion of 1 side (or the 3 sides), should the have to pay to match the rest of my home, i.e. either painting, or replacing all the siding?

Motorcycle wreck with uninsured driver at fault. Discussing medical / pain and suffering.

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 03:59 PM PDT

Basis of the story. I had an uninsured unlicensed unregistered driver pull out in front of me causing a wreck. The police report decided they were at fault. My bike was totaled out.

Fast forward. Insurance paid cash value for the bike under my property damage coverage. That side of the claim was closed.

About a week ago insurance called to inquire about my bodily injuries as well as discussing pain and suffering. I'm active duty military so I get medical treatment for free.

I've received MRIs on my shoulder, back, pelvis, and knee. With results stating potential tears in my meniscus, labrum in the hips, bulging disc, torn shoulder and bicep tissue, and a slight fracture in my humerus. I'm current awaiting word on my appointments with ortho.

With all that being said, is there a certain figure I should be looking at for this? Max coverage is $100,000 uninsured motorist for bodily injury.

What is this process usually like? Timelines? Attorney involvement?

EDIT: I'm living in Washington state. My insurance policy is based on North Carolina.

I pay only for liability insurance, so upon calling progressive, they said that I might as well not file a claim since I won't be getting anything, because I was the only one involved in the accident (thank goodness) and there's no collision coverage. Basically my question is: will my insurance go up even though I didn't file a claim? I'm sure the insurance has access to my driving records at any time. But maybe not?

    Car insurance after DUI???

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 02:15 PM PDT

Hi! So I got a misdemeanor DUI a couple of years ago at age 18. I was convicted May 2018 in the state of Nevada. Completed all the court ordered stuff. My licence was suspended for the first 6 months but I have yet to reinstate it due to the high insurance cost. I was covered under my dad's insurance and the guy I rear ended got the max settlement (it was the worst mistake of my life but he was not seriously injured - I honestly think he milked it). My dad is telling me that if I were to reinstate my licence I would have to be covered under his insurance since my permanent address is still his address and I am still a dependent on his taxes. Do you guys know if I were to move out I would be able to get my licence back without being covered on his insurance? Or if he were to no longer claim me as a dependent on his taxes? I know insurance won't be cheap regardless, but it might be cheaper if I can find it elsewhere since the guy did get the max settlement. Not really sure how this all works, it's so confusing, but maybe someone here understands it better than I do. I am in school and it's becoming increasingly hard to get by without driving.

    HOA Master Policy

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 07:35 AM PDT

I'm currently purchasing a townhome in Minneapolis, MN.

My HOA's insurance agent says everything structural in the townhome will be covered under their master policy. She said I only need to insure anything that would fall out if I tipped the house upside down. So only the things I bring in. I imagine I will be helping pay for that premium in my HOA dues.

But my insurance agent says he thinks we should get a little bit of structural coverage "just in case". He says he has seen it where a catastrophe happens and not everything was actually covered under the master policy, and then the owners have to front the bill. He's thinking $10,000 - $20,000 in coverage, just to help secure any loose ends in the event of an issue. But I'm thinking this is a little redundant. Why would I pay to insure something twice? I'm not made of money, especially since I will be a first time mortgage lender...

I'm wondering if an extra $30 bill a month is worth the peace-of-mind or if it's just completely redundant? My budget will be tight and that $30 could definitely be helpful elsewhere. Thoughts?
