Anybody else casually browse Indeed/LinkedIn job postings during work hours?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 08:40 AM PDT

Not trying to quit my job or uproot my life and move yet, but I'm definitely looking out for higher paying positions that are advertised as permanent WFH.

As a first year associate (big 4) - the following occurs way more than it should

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 09:38 AM PDT

In charge tells me to schedule time in their diary to explain some work and what I need to do.

In charge casually comes to my desk and tells me to open up various excel documents on file

In charge explains the basic of what we're trying to do and then proceeds to show me an example to make it more easier to

Follows their instructions and gets a completely undesired outcome. Brushes it off as an anomaly. Picks another example and tries again, again it doesn't work. At this point they get quite flustered start waffling about why these examples don't work and how it should work and then slowly start to end the conversation and tell me to just play around with it and it will work.

Then goes back to their day while leaving me completely confused with how what to do lol.

This has happened so many times I've lost count. I understand that things don't always align properly but it's frustrating when they try and show me an example of how the process should work after explaining it - can't find one that does and then just walk off as if we didn't even have a discussion lol.

Any reason to get a CPA if I'm doing TAS/FDD?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 07:57 PM PDT

I'll be starting at a big 4 doing TAS/FDD next year and I'm wondering how much benefit I'll actually receive from the certification aside from the bonus for completing it.

I'm not sure what my long term career plans are yet, but from what I understand I wouldn't need if I were to stay long term to try and make partner. If I were to look for exit opps I think I would want to network my way into something in finance, or go for an MBA. Are there really any exit opportunities that are traditional to TAS/FDD that demand a CPA or even value it whatsoever? I figure that going for something like controller wouldn't even be an option to begin with (CPA or not) since I won't have any audit experience.

With that being said, I don't know what I want to do long-term - so my question is, are there any exit opps from TAS/FDD that I would need a CPA to get into?

What are the limitations of WFH

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 08:54 PM PDT

Can you browse Reddit while you are WFH since no one is there to monitor you? WFH must be really great since you are giving free reign to do whatever you want as long as you complete your work.

Will companies pigeon-hole you if you are a specialist so that you’re doomed to the same role again and again? Or will companies think you’re too shallow if you are a generalist and you appear not qualified enough when compared to the specialists?

Did I mess up by staying at local college?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 05:31 PM PDT

I'm in my junior year at my local university. Everyone from my town ends up going here, and I see why. I mean it's a cheap way to get an education and usually graduate debt free, I will too. But after reading a lot of posts on here and just browsing reddit, I feel like I messed up staying here so long. Bigger colleges have way better accounting programs and job opportunities and the students talk about their career fairs and all that. My little non target doesn't have anything really. I'm Still applying for big 4 and regional but just curious if there's anyone out there that feels the same.

    Post-baccalaureate diploma in account

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 05:03 PM PDT

Anyone know the likelihood to get into the program at Carleton university if your cgpa is at 66% and not the 70% they require. I keep recalculating if I was to do more courses or redo courses and it'll end up costing me too much as a special student to get my cgpa upto the 70% they require. I really want to do the post-baccalaureate in accounting, I want to become a cpa and really am hoping and praying that my past grades don't hold me back from pursuing the career path I'm hell bent on. Anyone know any other things I can do in order to get accepted? Please let me know!! 🥺

Or anyone else have any instances where they got accepted into a program with an average that was below the cut off??? I really want to do this.

Are all accounting jobs like this?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 07:04 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I'm a sophomore in college, and I'm currently majoring in Accounting. I love problem solving, being organized, social, and math. I have really enjoyed my accounting classes and that is why I have chose to go down the accounting route.

My buddy however has not had the best experience in accounting. He described his job as ridiculously boring, and repetitive. He has been working for 7 months and says he does nothing but bank reconciliations and month end entries-then repeats. Another thing he said is he does not really talk to anyone and everyone just stays in their corner of their room the whole time. He says he also makes 45k a year. Did he just find a bad job position, or is this pretty typical of all accountants? I don't mind repetitive as much, but I would like to be a little social, and maybe have the opportunity to get up and move around?

So do you think this is just because it's an entry level position? Should I consider a different career? What has your experience been like?

I am a beginner English learner

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 10:32 PM PDT

I remember in one my senior level accounting class, my professor told the class that it will be very difficult for ESL to pass the CPA exam. I don't disagree since it takes quite a lot of work for me to be able to read and understand an Accounting textbook.

This was in a tax class, so the readings required were very difficult for me. That being said, I am afraid that my English skills won't be adequate to even work in public accounting.

I am afraid of making grammatical errors on my emails to clients or not being able to write explanations well enough for clients and my coworkers. English is very difficult for me, and I am dreading having to compete with native speakers in the job market.

Funnily enough, I remember reading a review on Glassdoor on how one of the firms had their interviewees do a writing sample onsite.

B4 Training for new hires - lots of zoom social events?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 02:51 PM PDT

I'm starting B4 audit next month in the midwest, I think everything is going to be on zoom for the first couple weeks of training.

Should I expect happy hours on zoom in the evenings? What should I expect from these?

Really wishing we could get to know people in person, but oh well.

    Big 4 Cell Phone Privacy?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 09:22 PM PDT

Starting at a firm soon and from my understanding they will provide a work phone and pay the bill, or you can port your phone into their plan and use it for both.

I'd like to use my personal phone for both in order to save on a bill and just have everything in 1 place for organizational purposes; my only concern is privacy. (Don't really care about not being able to "escape" work that's what Do Not Disturb is for)

Will downloading the firm software allow them to have access to all of the contents in my phone? I don't do anything that weird or illegal but I'd prefer if someone didn't have the ability to look at all my weird/random google searches, read my texts or see pictures that I'm sending or receiving

Can someone explain the difference between risk advisory and audit?
