I passed my last exam :)

I'm so happy right now, just found out I passed BEC. I know its the easiest exam but I passed it working full-time and don't have to study for the CPA anymore. I hope everyone passed the exams they took this testing period!

Currently studying for my CMA exam - part 1 (study unit 10)

If anyone else has taken this exam or is currently studying for it, what are your experiences like?

I'm using GLEIM and getting my ass handed to me. Currently clinging to some small baseless hope that the study prep materials are intentionally more difficult than the actual exam.

However, I know I'm doomed and am mostly looking for commiseration lol

    Cheers!

    Feeling disconnected from Work

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 09:18 AM PDT

I'm an Associate at a large CPA firm in a major metro area. Live in an Apartment in the city.

I'm really starting to be concerned about my apathy towards work lately. I've become a bit depressed being at home 24/7. I really miss seeing co-workers and being in an office environment. It's hard to get going on most days. My motivation for taking initiative is just about gone. My mental health has deteriorated. I don't think higher-ups know what they're doing to the mental health of their younger employees. I feel like communication is average at best.

Does anyone else have similar feelings?

    Anyone work at RSM McLean

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 09:56 AM PDT

Looks like the NRA is now under the thumb of the Southern District. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-53684033. Latest I could find was RSM McLean was the auditor. Based on what I have read so far looks like there was definitely some sketchy stuff going on managements expenditures and loan arrangements. Curious what everyone else thinks about this.

    Forensic Accounting - your thoughts

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 09:34 PM PDT

Hey guys, just wanted some advice/opinions on some questions I had about forensic accounting:

    i) If you have a certification/qualification for forensic accounting, where did you get it and how easy was it?

ii) How did you transition from what you were before to a forensic accountant?

iii) Less of a forensic accounting question specifically, but has anyone enrolled in or heard of Brentwood Open Learning College? Reviews are kind of mixed (varied subjects) and that was the only online college I could find that was affordable, so I am interested in knowing more about them internally (communication, are they a scam, etc).

For context, I'm a new hire for a B4 Firm in audit, and the reason why I am looking into studying side-by-side is because there is no CPA/ACCA/ACA etc. study opportunities supported by the firm available in the country I'm in.

How many hours of true work do you do in a day?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 12:57 PM PDT

At a public accounting firm, working from home. Sometimes I feel with the amount of breaks, distractions, and general unmotivatedness I only work maybe 4 true hours a day in a 8 hour workday. This leads me to feeling really guilty, like I haven't done enough for the day. What are other people's experience with this?

Is it "too soon" to submit applications to the big 4 or smaller mid sized firms?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 07:37 PM PDT

I noticed that some firms have already opened up their applications for summer and spring internships for next year. The general deadline to apply for the big 4 and other mid sized firms is at the end of September. If I start sending applications in the next week or so, would my application be skipped over? It seems like most people would apply during the middle of September which is when the main recruiting event happens, which is Meet the Firms.

    Anyone else experiencing prolonged burnout?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 11:41 AM PDT

And not just the usual post-busy-season exhaustion? I spent 4 years in public thinking I wanted to make partner at first, started to feel a little tired after earning my CPA in my third year, thought it might just be the firm I was at so I switched to another. New firm absolutely destroyed my morale, so figured it was time to try private after a year there. I've been in a private role for about a year now and, while it is a LOT better, still wake up absolutely dreading every work day. Can't focus enough during the day to really complete my duties and constantly having to play catch up. It feels like hell. I'm honestly doubting whether or not this industry is even a good fit for me and am seriously considering going back to school for something completely unrelated (even had an appointment with an advisor at a local medical institute this week to discuss career options). I feel like I fundamentally have zero interest in accounting/finance and that might be the source of this now two-year-long crisis. Vacations don't help because I'm just constantly thinking about how much work is piling up while I'm gone.

Just curious if anyone has overcome something similar or is currently going through it? Any advice for getting your energy back?

Accounting degree worth it without CPA?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 05:22 AM PDT

    Hello,

I have been considering going into a masters in accounting program. I got my undergrad in applied math but after graduating started to get interested in accounting. However, the one thing holding me back is crippling anxiety about the idea of the CPA exam. If I completed the accounting program I am definitely going to try and obtain the CPA, however, I am concerned I will not be able to pass it. I am not the best test taker, and did have a fair amount of difficulty in my undergrad program. Is it still worth going into the profession if I am not able to obtain the CPA? If so, can I still potentially have a somewhat successful career without it? Lastly, how important is the CPA if my ultimate goal is to become a senior accountant (I have no intention on being any kind of manager).

Any input would be helpful. Thanks guys.
