Posting about your internship on LinkedIn

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 10:29 AM PDT

For all college students on this sub: Look.. we get it, you're happy you got an internship and want to announce it to the world that you did and that now it's over. In all honesty, congrats. It seems like it's getting more tough to land an internship, especially during this pandemic.

But in all seriousness, PLEASE STOP WITH THE CRINGY, KISS ASS, WORLD CHANGING, BROWN NOSING, LinkedIn posts about how your 3 week virtual internship was life/career changing and how you are so blessed to have been giving the opportunity to work on a client engagement.

Anyone who has any experience in the field, such as many people on this sub, laugh uncontrollably at these posts because deep down we know you probably didn't do shit in your internship, or if you did ... your work was probably reworked by someone after you left.

Instead of flexing for your own benefit by posting on LinkedIn, just send private emails to those within your organization who you worked with and those who are decision makers. This will be seen in a much more mature light than posting on LinkedIn with some kiss ass bullshit.

Not to vent, but cmon guys let's be real.

There is no industry more vulnerable to worker strikes than Big Public Accounting firms (a short story)

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 08:48 PM PDT

\The year is 2035. Tax and audit service lines at most big 4 haven't gotten a COL raise in over 15 years despite constant increases in rent and education costs. To compensate, the firms have all thrown 1 extra pizza party per year + 1 extra yoga class (if you hit 70 hours that week of course), some partners argue even that was too much. In response to this, associates across all the firms have organized and started the process of unionizing and a strike for paid overtime**

Head Partner Pete: Well Angela it's another day at the office.

Angela the Secretary: Yeah Pete another great day! Except I heard some associates talking earlier...

    Pete: About what?

Angy: Oh never mind Pete it might upset you.

Pete: Oh Angy c'mon hon hit me with it.

Angy: Well... some of the associates in the Audit practice were talking about unionizing then striking for gulp paid overtime...

Pete: Gasp WHAT THE ABSOLUTE FUCK ANGY?? Who was it? I did not work at this firm as an associate slaving away 30 years ago for it to be fucking UNIONIZED when I became partner. (Of course Pete did get paid overtime when he joined the firm 30 years ago. He recalled that firms would even let you choose to exchange overtime hours for extra vacation days back then, but that's besides the point obvi)

Angy: Well... it was... several sir 🥺 and not just at this branch... but they were saying other people were at the other branches were as well sir...

Pete: *Runs to the boardroom with the other senior partners\*

Pete: Oh my fuck have you heard that the Audit associates are thinking of striking? On our biggest client?!?! In the middle of fucking JANUARY?!?!!11!

Entire room of partners: *Shits pants\*

Penny the partner: (Uh oh I'm gonna need a new pair of knickers again)

Bob the partner: GG fam I'm out! *dies of a heart attack\*

Tim the partner: Pete, it's the middle of January. We're halfway through nearly every client's audit. F500's have strict reporting deadlines Pete. They can't just switch auditors in the middle of January cause our workers strike. If associates on even one decent sized client strike, we will have to issue a "disclaimer of opinion" and that'll mean that client's stock will tank billions of dollars! Not to mention the PCAOB will be up our ass! If that happens to even one client, our other clients will freak out and switch firms the first chance they get. WE'LL BE FUCKING RUINED!!! HOW WILL I AFFORD MY THIRD YATCH??!? HOW WILL I AFFORD MY MEDICATION (cocaine and hookers)??!?1 HOW WILL I AFFORD TO PAY CHAD? HE'S MRS. TIM'S YOGA INSTRUCTOR, PERSONAL TRAINER, AND THERAPIST!!1!1

Pete: *crying\* I don't KNOW Tim! I just don't KNOW!! Blows nose Maybe we could... do... the unthinkable...

    Tim: Pete you don't mean...

    Penny: He can't mean...

Pete: Yes I do mean... I mean to pay the associates for their overtime.

    Penny: *Sobs\* NOOOOOOOO PETE!!!

Tim: Oh my god but then how will I pay for Tim Jr's lacrosse lessons with Chad? (Tim Jr. does look a lot like chad doesn't he 🤔)

Pete: Well it does seem that's our only option at this point isn't it. If the workers strike, we lose our clients and go broke. Let's give them what they want.

\So the associates, and Chad, got paid for all the overtime they put in, and they all lived happily ever after❤️\

Bombarded by recruiters these last few weeks

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 10:27 AM PDT

Is everyone else being bombarded with recruiters recently? They may be legitimate, but it seems like quite a lot though.

Also, I am so over the bullshitting in the opening lines:. "your experience is impressive!", Or "you've built yourself quite a career!". Yeah, Steve, I job-hopped for the first 7 years, and actually have stuck out for awhile in my current role. Why do you think that is?

I just had a guy email me three times this week already. He wants to know if.i am okay. I've literally never heard from this guy in my life before this week, and I have not responded once.

It's worse this year than ever.

Are salaries for accountant in P&C insurance industry higher than others? How is working in one in general?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 06:39 PM PDT

Been auditing several P&C insurance companies last few years and looking at their payroll for accounting department is always impressive, more than other clients I've seen. Just a coincidence or are salaries for accountants in P&C insurance industry actually higher?

If anyone has any experience, how is working in that industry as an accountant in general? I know accounting is accounting but just the thought of "accounting for insurance" seems like the mix of boring and boring.

How long did you spend revising on FAR and AA?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 07:42 PM PDT

Might have screwed myself here but I got FAR and AA on the same day in around 3 weeks - 7 September.

I had tuition back in March for both and only started revising a few days ago. I've gone over all the topics from the course notes for FAR now apart from the group accounts section and hoping to have them covered (at least to a basic understanding by this weekend). Do you think another 14 days for FAR is doable in terms of revision time? I know I now need to prioritise the question bank.

And then spend the remaining 10 days on AA (which I haven't touched at all since March).

Just as abit of background, I've worked in audit for around 18 months now and my firm put me through exams really slowly hence why I'm only doing FAR and AA now. But I passed all the certificates first time and I have a decent understanding of double entry. I'm not an expert by any means nor do I remember all the correct accounting treatments covered in FAR, but I was at least able to follow all the concepts from going over the notes. So I'm just hoping I still have enough time to learn everything.

Sorry if I'm rambling, feeling a little stress. I also have from now until my exams booked off work. Realistically have I still got enough time to pass both exams?

Tldr: left revision late, how long did you guys spend on revising for FAR and AA?

I have an IRS Revenue Agent interview on Monday. Anyone know what the questions are like?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 03:42 PM PDT

    Hi,

After applying like 4 months ago, I got an email a few days ago about interviewing for the IRS Revenue Agent Pathways position. The interview is going to be 45 min - 1 hr with 3 managers, I guess. Has anyone interviewed for this position recently? How was it and what were the questions like?

I saw this in /gaming and was curious, how do companies account for this type of liability? I guess it’s an intentional 1000 year expiration date.
