Stocks - r/Stocks - Rule update: No penny stock or OTC discussions

r/Stocks - Rule update: No penny stock or OTC discussions

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 07:56 AM PDT

For a long time we've had rule 7 to prevent users from losing money in pump & dumps:

Rule 7: No pump & dump ticker discussions. We don't have a rule against microcap stocks, but they're susceptible to pump & dumps and those posts will be removed as spam/promotion and possibly autoremoved. Consider r/pennystocks, r/weedstocks, or r/CanadianInvestor

But the problem with this is that a pump can take days to weeks, so by the time we act it's already too late and a lot of users will fall victim to the dump or think they're clever and short only to time it wrong or realize the bid/ask spread is extremely wide and they're immediately at a loss when they get in.

So we have updated the rule to no penny stock discussions at all:

Rule 7: No penny stock discussions, including OTC, microcaps, pump & dumps, low vol pumps, etc. Consider r/pennystocks, r/weedstocks, or r/CanadianInvestor instead.

We're actually falling in line with subs that have banned penny stocks since forever like r/wallstreetbets:

No non-reporting penny, microcap, OTC stocks, low volume options, cryptocurrency, or any other worthless securities that are susceptible to scams or pump & dump schemes.

    And r/stockmarket:

No penny stock/OTC/low volume pumps, yes, we can spot them easily

While r/investing doesn't directly reference penny stocks in their rules, they remove penny stock discussions through their moderation bots & automod.

Our criteria for what a penny stock will be similar to Investopedia's definition:

    • Typically trades under $5 or previously traded under $5 before the pump
    • Below 300 million market cap or previously traded under 300m before the pump
    • Typically trades on OTC markets
    • Usually has missed reporting/filings; no auditing or odd auditing issues
    • Can have low volume or wide bid/ask spread

So while a stock might be over $5 or over 300m marketcap, but it was previously below those levels, we're going to consider those a penny stock and remove those posts to prevent users from engaging in a pump & dump.

I know a lot of users will be happy about this and at the same time angry/upset over it. But this is for your protection and raising the standards of the sub so we don't see shit stocks on the front page on a daily basis. Also a lot of users behind the scences have struggled to tell us and report on penny stock discussions when they weren't pump & dumps, such as using the report button, so now those posts/comments reported on will be removed since they fall under the new rule of no penny stock discussions.

If you see someone discussing a penny stock that fits the criteria above, please use the report button. Thank you.

Feel free to leave your feedback below, but please do not bring up penny stocks as an example or circumvent automod to do that. We're not going to ban users unless they're purposely promoting penny stocks or circumventing automod.

Another mod explained the purpose of this a little better than I did:

The purpose of the rule is mainly to prevent automated bots (or users) from using our community to manipulate a stock for profit.

We hope this makes the rule easier to interpret and follow so we can prevent our community from being used for market manipulation while still allowing discussion of legitimate companies.

    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Options Trading Thursday - Jun 04, 2020

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 01:06 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on stock options, but if options aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against options here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Required info to start understanding options:

    • Call option Investopedia video basically a call option allows you to buy 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to buy
    • Put option Investopedia video a put option allows you to sell 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to sell

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

Call option - Put option - Exercising an option - Strike price - ITM - OTM - ATM - Long options - Short options - Combo - Debit - Credit or Premium - Covered call - Naked - Debit call spread - Credit call spread - Strangle - Iron condor - Vertical debit spreads - Iron Fly

If you have a basic question, for example "what is delta," then google "investopedia delta" and click the investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

    Warren Buffet

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 06:22 AM PDT

When you start to feel down on yourself about a FOMO, panic sell, or bad trade, just remember that Warren Buffet sold all his airlines at the literal bottom for untold millions lost and then sat on the sideline in cash for this entire run up

Edit: Wow thanks for the award! My first on Reddit :)

Edit 2: this post has doubled my overall Reddit Karma. Glad we can all take a breather and realize we are all human and not take ourselves too seriously. Now what's the ratio between Karma and Reddit gold, 100000000:1? LFG!

If there is no 2nd wave...

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 02:02 AM PDT

Hi, I'm a healthcare worker who drove to Seattle to assist with the 1st outbreak there in early March and then flew to NYC where I've worked 7 nights a week until tonight (my 1st night off in over 50 days, also my birthday!). That's relevant because, by working such crazy hours I've had zero time to research and invest despite have some pretty decent insight into recent events, clinical trials, etc. However, I have accumulated a good amount of money and have no debt.

My question is, hypothetically, IF there is no 2nd wave, and IF the unrest dies down what stocks might be MOST wise to invest in now with that in mind? Is this already "priced in" with an optimistic market? I've had FOMO and rightfully so up to this point. Thanks

Airline Stocks and Second Wave Effect

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 01:31 PM PDT

Like many of you, I'm up pretty big on my airline stocks. Currently holding about 60k split between DAL, JBLU, and SAVE. (Thank God for margin trades!)

I'm worried about the impact if there is a significant second wave of coronavirus infections. It would frighten the market tremendously. I want to lock in profits on the first sign of a second wave. In what specific ways would one quickly get news of pandemic numbers spiking?

    DKNG+NBA=$$$$

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 11:16 AM PDT

    https://www.amny.com/sports/basketball-is-back-nba-approves-22-team-return-to-play-plan-starting-july-31/

As the article shows the NBA has just been approved to play. Which of course means one more sport for online gambers to bet on. Which of course means more profit. That should be a no brainer and im sure many of you have oicked uo on it already. For those who havent, its only a matter of time before all the leagues come back because they will find ways to make the sport "safer" for players. They cant give up the billions those owners missing out on. So sports is back on and the DKNG train is about to leave the station.

Microsoft is still a good buy

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 12:13 PM PDT

Just sold a lot of my other positions today. I work in a particular retail industry and today heard news of Microsoft boasting their cloud services and general interest in becoming the backbone of the architecture.

I'm now ~ 50% all in on Microsoft and 40% cash.

    Selling After Hours

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 01:32 PM PDT

When I plan to sell after hours, let's say a specific stock is at $15.02, when I sell that stock the sale won't go through until the morning correct? If so, does that mean by stock will still be valued at the $15.02? Or will it be based off the new market value in the opening? Thank you!

Everybody is saying you have to diversify, But they are also saying to only invest in things I understand...

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 01:36 PM PDT

    How is it possible?

For example I am an engineer and I have invested:

30% of my portfolio in 3 different hydrogen companies.

    25 % in 2 semiconductor companies

    25 % in 2 food related stocks

20 % in 2 electric vehicle related stocks

On the one had It is diversified, since my portfolio contains 9 different stocks. But it is mostly tech (because I understand tech), so not diversified, or what?

Airelines and cruises ...I said it once, I’ll say it again

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 11:51 AM PDT

Don't listen to people on here , I didn't . I knew airlines would take off again, they had to!!! So many of you idiots said not to touch it and look at it now. Keep buying your tech stocks that will go sideways for years to come or down .... moral of the story don't listen to people here because most people just along and say what others have been saying without knowing what the hell they are talking about

    Just liquidated my DAL position

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 06:38 AM PDT

Sold 100 shares at $30.10. Bought in at $25.30 over a month ago.

I am happy with my sale because who knows what restructuring can be on the way as these companies are not too big to fail. Plus, even if they do rebound, there are other places where I see a better/safer return. Anyone else sell their airlines today too?

What’s your due diligence process like?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 08:37 AM PDT

I'm 18, got into stocks about a year ago.

I personally look at companies in multiple sectors and see the ones that are dominating, upcoming names and companies that aren't too hot and try to find out reasonings why.

I look at financials and earnings reports along with new products or services and their benefit.

What's your process like? Trying to see if I can make adjustments to mine.

    Anyone else sell $NKLA/ $VTIQ?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 01:52 PM PDT

Bought 25 $VTIQ shares at an average price of $19. Sold 20 of them today for $35.30. Holding 5 for the possibility of it skyrocketing, but I think this stock is just all hype and gonna end up like $SPCE. What do you guys think?

Off the Radar stocks to keep an eye on

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 01:42 PM PDT

Recently sold some positions and I'm currently looking for new stocks to watch and potentially add to my portfolio. Most of my portfolio is currently in technology stocks and I am okay adding more but also I would like to diversify into other markets. Any suggestions help as I am simply searching for stocks to look more deeply into.

    Just sold AAL...60% gain!

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 11:26 AM PDT

I bought AAL at $9.72 on 5/23 and just sold it at $16.11. That is a CRAZY bump and I just don't think it will hold today's 34% gain. Perhaps this was short sighted, I dunno.

I also bought DIS at $100.88 but I think I'll be holding that one forever.

That leads me to my next question, what do I do with $15k of cash?

I know there's a lot of speculation about this one. Has anyone done any research on it yet?

Had a really crappy day today (all things considered, didn't really lose anything but learned a lot about patience in the market). In any case, I'm looking for something new to branch out into (was hoping it would be in the area of kids but I think that ship has sailed).

FANG Stocks - Selloff or profit taking?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 01:22 PM PDT

I don't want to be a bringer of doom - but has anyone compared all FANG stocks on the 1-5 minute charts yesterday and today? They have followed each other identically and look like either massive selloffs or profit taking is occurring.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
