A question about my car's No Claims Discount (UK)

    Posted: 09 May 2020 03:48 AM PDT

    Hi everyone.

I'm quite confused about how my No Claims Discount is calculated. When does the year begin / end?

So my insurance has always renewed around August. I first got insured on my own Policy in August 2015. I had a minor bump that was my fault in December 2018.

At that point I would have had 3 years No Claims. I actually made the claim through insurance around February 2019 though.

So when it came to renewing my policy in August 2019, my NCB dropped to 1 year.

I am just wondering, when would be the point that I would get my 2nd year of NCD? Would it be a year after my claim (February 2020), or would it be when I next renew my claim (August 2020)?

Home Insurance Help (Canada, BC) - Condo Building

    Posted: 08 May 2020 08:47 PM PDT

    Hi All,

Looking for some help to decipher my new home insurance coverage and what risks I need to cover for.

I am living in a 2016 condo high-rise (about 260 units) in Vancouver,BC. Over the past few years we have had 2 major floods in the building. And the one recently where someone elses unit flooded causing a flood to my unit (20+units impacted) as well. At the time i ended up claiming from my insurance (paid 700$ deductible) for the repairs for water damage. Now it has come for time to renewals again. My buildings strata deductible has since 10x compared to last year to $250,000 (see below (Letter C).

I was previously paying about 400ish per year in 2019 for home insurance (See Letter A). I have gotten quotes for 2020 from a few places and many have indicated that they are not able to insurance for over $100,000 for the water damage and will need additional coverage with quotes end up being for over 2k annually.

I have attached a quote from the same company for 2020 (Letter B). Wondering what line item I am missing here? Do i have enough water coverage? They mentioned that 100k was the limit and ill need an additional quote to cover for the 250k strata deductible. This will push the 2020 price from 737$ to about 2k. (i have yet to get the 2k quote yet). The company has changed the quote a few times after I sent them the building insurance.

Looking for some opinions on what I am missing or if I have enough coverage. What is a special assessment deductible? Isn't the "Comprehensive water damage" ~228kish the amount suppose to cover the water damage section (yes I realize its below the 250). But where is this 100k limit coming from?

    Thanks for any responses!

    Auto Insurance Advice

    Posted: 09 May 2020 12:29 AM PDT

I'm trying to help advise a friend who's working on getting a car and getting back on the road. We've figured out he's buying a used vehicle, somewhere between $5,000-$10,000 value. Now for the problems: he has a very poor credit score, and he had a DUI in 2017. The guy is just trying to get a leg up. I cannot add him to my family's plan (I'm on my parents' auto insurance plan) and I cannot co-sign any loans or anything for him because I can't risk my own financial health for something I don't know too much about. What is the best course of action from here? Any insurance companies that might offer him something (we're not expecting that to be cheap). Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Flying Trampoline

    Posted: 08 May 2020 08:21 PM PDT

    Hi All,

I live in Texas. On May 7, 2020 at around 10:30 PM CST one of our neighbor's trampoline flew out of their backyard and hit my car and damaged hood and front bumper. The neighbor has bundled auto+home insurance.

They filed a claim with their insurance that night and the next day they received a call from their insurance that they are closing the claim as they are not liable. They asked for me to file a claim with my auto insurer. I called up my insurance representative and as I suspected they told me that they can file this as a comprehensive claim and I will have to pay my deductible.

When I called neighbor's insurance company, they told me that the trampoline flew due to high wind and that may be seen as act of God and that basically frees the neighbor from any liability.

When I called the police to file a report of this incident, they said that this is not a legal matter. This is a civil matter and there is nothing they can do.

    What are my options here?

    Thanks in advance.

I am trying to cancel my employer basef health insurance plan. As they added a new wellness based program and continue to change the terms of service. I have been told that unless I have a major life event change that I cannot stop it just because of a disagreement with the wellness program and terms of service. The issue is that I cannot complete the wellness program because I dont agree with the tos changes and so it charges me more of a premium. Is this accurate that i cant cancel Fl

Branded Title (lemon buyback) considered when determining the total loss of vehicle?

    Posted: 08 May 2020 11:04 PM PDT

Hi folks! I purchased a car that was a lemon buyback which branded the title. The blue book on the car is 11k due to the branding even though regular blue book is 22k. If my car is in an accident do they take into account the branded title when determining if the car is a total loss? I'm in Dallas Texas. The car was buyback branded out of California

Newly have my own insurance and got rear ended

    Posted: 08 May 2020 11:03 PM PDT

Moved out from my parents house last year and just got off of their insurance. I've got a spotless driving record, never been pulled over or in an accident. The DAY AFTER I switch to my own insurance, I get rear ended. It really isn't that bad and I wasn't injured, the person who hit me just wanted to pay me some cash and part ways (honestly I just have some scratches and minor denting) but when she was talking I smelled alcohol on her breath, so I called the police to get an accident report from them and if she was intoxicated then they'd deal with her.

Police determined that she was entirely at fault (but not intoxicated, just careless) and I have the report that has her insurance on it. I filed a claim with my insurance, they reviewed it and said that I could either:

    A) Make her insurance pay for it B) Use my insurance and pay my deductible

Obviously, I chose option A. They then said that I had to contact her insurance myself (this was all in the app, not actually talking to a person).

So I have a couple questions; What do I do next? I don't know exactly how much it will cost to fix my bumper for one, and I've been told by family members that her insurance will try to pay out as little as possible to me, and I suck at negotiating/standing my ground.

Since I'm not using my own insurance, this shouldn't affect my rates... right?

EDIT: This happened in Florida but my home address for my insurance is Missouri, so I don't know how that affects things either

My car was just stolen. I need tips on filing a claim.

    Posted: 08 May 2020 09:29 PM PDT

My ex wife, who's under my insurance (full coverage), stopped at a store to grab a drink, and stupidly left the car unlocked and running. Sure enough, in the store, a shop lifter was caught, panicked, saw the running car and took off with it.

Luckily the car has onstar. Its already been located and disabled. The cops are investigating as we speak.

Now, if something is wrong with the car, I'll have to file a claim. Here's my worry though...

If my ex was stupid enough to leave the car running like that, then isn't that negligence on her part, thus insurance wouldn't cover it? Or is it still considered an incident out of our control? How should I word this to my insurance?

Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

Arizona, USA. My landlords insurance claim is killing my future renters insurance opportunities for cheap rates

    Posted: 08 May 2020 12:25 PM PDT

Hello all. I rent a house. My landlord lives in Australia and I go through the property managers for all maintenance and what not. Around 1.5 years ago the water heater fell through the pedestal it sits on and caused it to rupture, destroying a portion of the landlords property (walls and floor). I was at work at the time of this occurring. My landlord, I am assuming, went through his/her insurance company to repair the damages. Since this occurred, I have been finding it very very difficult to obtain inexpensive renters insurance. Most places I contact give me quotes that are 2x-3x what normal minimum insurance would cost.

Also, I would like to note that I have never filed a claim on my policies in all the years I have had the renters policy. Will I forever face bloated insurance costs because of the claim my landlord filed on their policy? Do I need to move just to get cheaper renters insurance?

For example, two years ago I was paying around $10-$15 per month. Now, for the same exact coverage, I am looking at upwards of $55 per month. The cheapest I found was $25 per month. Is there going to ever be a point that I can locate cheaper renters insurance without moving?

Thanks for whatever help you all can provide.

    No network hospital

    Posted: 08 May 2020 08:57 PM PDT

    No network hospital

My insurance does not have an in network or out of network hospital. They say that they have maximum allowable charge (a little bit over what Medicare pays). Anyone hear of this? Is this fine? My deductible stays the same regardless. I'm afraid the hospital might balance bill me since they don't have an in or out of network hospitals. But they said if anyone does balance bill me to send that to them and they have a third party to handle that claim in court and stuff idk. I have OSMA health. Anyone have any insights or familiarity?

    Brain Meltdown

    Posted: 08 May 2020 07:19 PM PDT

Hello fellow insurance people. I've been working on a statement of values today which wasn't properly broken down. I'm trying to update my Equipment Breakdown limit to even just match the expiring limits. I feel like an idiot having to ask this but I've gone upside down and sideways with different values for contents, equipment, building. Am I including finished but not yet shipped stock values, or just raw material values- along side of equipment, business interruption, building, etc. none of the values match at all. So I'm doubting what I'm even including in the calculations.

Hopefully this is a simple answer for someone. I just want to put the correct Direct Damage limit, and if that includes finished stock, or only raw materials, or both.

And for reference, this is a millwright who manufactures, supplies and installs. Some furniture making. Not sure if that matters.

Edit: forgot to mention, I'm in BC, Canada

    Thanks!

Both of my insurers are bouncing claims back and forth claiming to be my secondary provider

    Posted: 08 May 2020 12:43 PM PDT

I am 24 and insured through my employer/university in PA and my mother's insurance out of state (limited out of state coverage). For the past 3 months, I was in and out of doctors' offices. Although all of these visits were covered by my insurance, they were all denied with my employer's insurance claiming they are "excess coverage only" and secondary to other providers. My mother's insurance follows national guidelines that make the plan to which you are a dependent secondary to your own personal insurance. Both companies have denied all my claims and refuse to acknowledge themselves as my primary provider. I've spent hours going back and forth between the two as they regurgitate their policies to me to no avail. The only party I haven't been able to speak to is my university's HR department which is backlogged due to COVID-19. Will my school HR department have any say in designating a primary vs. secondary? I'm fairly certain my employer's insurance isn't complying to NAIC guidelines but they aren't yet budging. Any advice?

    [CAN-ON] Misrepresentation/cancellation of policy

    Posted: 08 May 2020 03:52 PM PDT

So long story short, I got my first car, insured it, etc. The insurance company asks me to put all the people with drivers licenses on my policy (my parents). A few weeks later, I get a call from my insurance company asking if my brother lives with me. I say no. They then proceed to cancel my insurance for misrepresentation because my brother hadn't changed his driver's license address. What can I do now? Other companies will insure me at a bigger premium than I was already getting. If teen insurance in the GTA wasn't bad enough, here's a higher premium because we can. I told them I didn't know his license was still on my address. Do I just suck it up and consider this a lesson learned? I've been shopping for insurance for a few months now and I can't get a relatively affordable premium anywhere. Mind you I own a 1991 car and am carrying only liability. And the premium is still well over 5 grand a year. Sorry for the rant -ish post. Thanks for any advice you may have. P.S. A misrepresentation charge is visible by all insurers here in Ontario and I believe it's visible for 5-10 years depending on the insurance company.

2020 TESLA Model 3 hit while parked

    Posted: 08 May 2020 03:13 PM PDT

My car door was hit by another car's door while parked. Geico is their insurer and took full responsibility. There are scratches, some deep and a dent. I want to submit Diminished Value Supporting documents. Does anyone know when I should get appraisal and credible sources in SF Bay Area? What can I expect?

My car's value brand new is $47K. Obviously it's used now but just a couple thousand miles on it. Now it has gone from pristine condition to soon to be repaired.

Will my insurance rate increase if I’m NOT AT FAULT for a minor car accident?

It is a really minor accident but I want to file a claim.

Tips on filing car insurance claim?

    Posted: 08 May 2020 01:30 PM PDT

    Hi,

I'm in the US and Someone had their door opened while loading their groceries and it was hitting my car. It left a small dent. I got the insurance info and photos of the scene

Any advice on filing the auto insurance claim to get the most out of the claim?

I have (A) photos (B) video of their car door hitting my car (C) license and insurance info

This person had someone with them and that person told me yes, they did hit my car because their car door matched exactly where the dent in my car is.

2 - do I file the claim to my insurance or the other party's (they are at fault)?

    Thanks very much!

[Virginia Vehicle Insurance] Auto Insurance Put Our Policy On Hold, then Told Us We Cannot Activate it for 30 days per Virginia State Law.

    Posted: 08 May 2020 11:28 AM PDT

This is regarding car insurance in the State of Virginia. Less than a month ago we asked our car insurance company (state of Virginia) for options since our car was parked in a secured lot in Maryland temporarily and because of travel restrictions for Covid we are out of town and didn't have access to it.

They suggested they could designate the car in storage and pause liability coverage

Now, we are able to coordinate with a family member (who have their own auto insurance - full coverage) to pick up the car. When we called our auto insurance company to reactivate the policy, they stated that by Virginia State Law they cannot remove the "vehicle storage" designation for 30 days. We don't recall being informed of this restriction.

Is this a true statement by Virginia Law - that insurance coverage cannot be reactivated for 30 days? If this is true, is there anything we can do because of special (Covid) circumstance?

If true, would our family member's full coverage insurance be cover them and the vehicle as they transport it from one storage to another?

I haven't heard this 30-day restriction before. In addition, if I remember the driver's full policy carries over if they have to drive the car. If this the 30 day restriction is true and enforced, can the car still be drivable with our family member's insurance carrying over?

    Thank you!
