Car Insurance When Moving - Looking for Advice

    Posted: 29 May 2020 05:13 AM PDT

    Background

I'm planning a move to a city where I need a car from a city where I don't have one. In the city I am staying in presently, I don't have a car or car insurance. I've had car insurance from rentals (from the provider or my credit card company), but other than that no car insurance history.

    Car Insurance

While I'm still planning my move it appears I need to consider where I purchase car insurance properly if I'm moving to a city where there is no feasible public transportation. I will not have a lease signed or an established residence at the destination city when I arrive. But I will need a car to move around right out of the gate. Should I buy car insurance at my source city? Would it be possible to get insurance in my destination city without an established residence?

    Moving consequences

The decision may have a trickle effect on how I move. I might consider purchasing a car (along with insurance) in my home city and take a road trip to the destination city. However, I'm not sure whether the policy will cover long distance road trips.

If it's better to purchase insurance (and a car) in the destination city, I may have to rent a car for 2-3 weeks to view places. I'm not sure how long would it take for me to be able to purchase insurance in such circumstances, would I need to prove residency for a month before I am able to purchase one in the destination city?

    Appreciate the guidance!

Claims Representatives; can you please tell me about your job?

    Posted: 28 May 2020 09:43 AM PDT

Looking to possibly apply as a claims representative. If you happen to be one, can you tell me what do you like (and dislike) about your job? Is a claims rep the same thing as an insurance adjuster? What are the strengths required to be a good claims rep? Tell me everything and anything. Much appreciated, Thanks!

Which address to use for auto insurance?

    Posted: 28 May 2020 10:52 PM PDT

Sorry if this is a dumb question. I'm from NYC and spend my time split pretty equally between two apartments. I'll be getting a car next month and was wondering which address do I use for my auto insurance? Does it matter or can I use either or? Or does it have to match the address that's on my license? Because I've read that insurance companies want to know your address so they know where you're parking your car at night, but if I park in both places equally idk what to do.

About to hop off my parents insurance as I buy my first real car and we are running into issues.

    Posted: 28 May 2020 08:18 PM PDT

I [23M] in Kansas am buying a new car (2013 VW Passat tdi with 40k miles) and need to have insurance on it.

In the past, my parents would have the car and insurance in their name and they would just pay liability because my cars were not ever worth more than 3k.

Well the time has come to have my own insurance and come to find out, I don't have any insurance history which makes me look very poor to an insurance company. Even for the new Passat, a relatively safe and cheap car, I was quoted at 173 a month!

Our agent is saying we can add me to one of the cars, make our 6 month payment and pick up my parents insurance history, but if there are any tickets it can be hard to do and I have 3 tickets, 2 of which are below 10 mph. What are some things I can do to lower my payment?

    Braces covered under my plan?

    Posted: 28 May 2020 06:56 PM PDT

Would dental braces be covered under the supplemental comprehensive dental coverage (Amerivantage Dual Coordination D SNP)? I'm comparing my options, but I'll sign up for this plan if it is (I have verified my eligibility). The Evidence of Coverage wasn't very specific (found as a PDF download here: https://shop.amerigroup.com/medicare/docs/2020_HMO_DSNP_EOC_AGP_TX_DUAL_CRD_030_002.pdf )

Is there somewhere else I should verify/search?

Quote from a dentist falls ~$120 short of actual copay (WA)

    Posted: 28 May 2020 06:53 PM PDT

Brand new here but wanted some insight into something that happened today. On mobile so apologies for everything.

Got some dental work done today, crowns, filling, build up yada yada. They printed me a quote when I went in the first time and the estimate for the work I got done today was a little over $1200. They printed me a quote today and it was the same price. I get my work done everything is great and when the clerk goes to run everything my copay for everything that's done is basically rounded up to the nearest 100 or 50. So instead of paying 127, I ended up paying 150. Clerk is a little more freaked out about it than me and tried running everything like 4 more times. Asked if my insurance changed and then whispered to me "if you want you can just call it in tomorrow and you can pay then" I ended up paying for everything. ($9 in my bank account. Woohoo!) He told me to call my insurance and see what happened and he'd continue to check if anything was wrong on his end.

My question is has anything happened to anyone here? This is the first time I'm taking care of any expense using insurance. When they gave me the quote it said in tiny letters at the bottom that the quote does not reflect the actual charge so I was expecting this. His reaction makes me think my insurance is undercovering me though.

[US-GA] car insurance in married name but license in maiden name

    Posted: 28 May 2020 06:50 PM PDT

    Hi all,

Quick question. Initially when I added my wife, she was on as a excluded driver as we were living in different states. She got around to changing her name on her SSN but her license due to the covid situation. Now we changing all her policies to mine and was wondering would the name be an issue or should I get it changed to the maiden name? Thanks.

    Subrogation / arbitration

    Posted: 28 May 2020 06:47 PM PDT

    Hello,

I was involved in a minor crash. The other driver's house was on the right side of the street and I was in the right most lane. She came out of nowhere and hit my driver side doors. Her car sustained damage to the front right corner. I think she wanted to change lanes to move to the right lane to get into her driveway and I was in her blindspot, she slowed down for the right turn and she turned into me while I was traveling straight in my own lane. She claimed she was behind me to the police? The cop came out and said it looked like she was at fault. We filed our claims and both insurance companies (CA) sided with their own drivers. My adjuster said it would go to arbitration and a 3rd party would decide.

Today, I got a letter from my insurance company from the subrogation dept saying "the arbitration is for the other party's damages only". The letter asks for additional info about police reports, etc. that was already given to the adjuster. Is this normal, shouldn't my insurance demand the arbitration settles my claim too vs just the other companies damages. I drive an older car so I have liability only and have not repaired my car. I'm assuming since nothing has been done on my car they can't try to seek damages yet? Or has my insurance company just given up on offense?

I tried asking my adjuster but she hasn't called me back. I appreciate any help to ease my mind :)

    Geico and Accident

    Posted: 28 May 2020 06:36 PM PDT

The other day I was sitting in my car in my work parking lot when a coworker was backing into his spot, he hit the side of my car and scratched it pretty bad. He took full blame for it and our insurance (both Geico) made a claim. I had to take 10 pictures of my car (they only asked for 1 vague picture of the actual damage). Today I got an email stating my estimate and they are sending me out a check in the mail with the price. The price ended up being $800. My dealership I'm dealing with ( since it's leased ) is asking for at least $1300. Would I have to pay out of pocket? This wasn't my fault what so ever.

    Geico Settlement-Pre-tax adjustment

    Posted: 28 May 2020 06:29 PM PDT

Hi, I have some questions for adjusters that I hope you can help me answer. I have car insurance through Geico.

I drive a 2006 Hyundai Tucson and I got in a car accident about a week or two ago (days blend together for me since the pandemic) where I hit a stopped car. I was lost in thought and didn't react fast enough to avoid the car in front of me. Air bags didn't deploy in either cars and I was still able to drive my car after (I got in the accident on my way home from another city—6 hour drive one way). My car was declared a total loss and has been sitting in a salvage yard since. I got a message about my settlement today (see below).

In regard to the settlement, they said they had to consider previous damage to my car. Consequently, my car was stolen last year and eventually recovered. I settled for about $4,000 and some change. Instead of paying for a new car, I decided to buy my car back and I didn't repair the damages because they were mainly cosmetic. My adjuster told me since I didn't fix the damage to my car last year, they had to deduct the value of the repair from my settlement.

The settlement they're offering me is not enough to get a reliable car (unless I'm lucky or really disciplined about search for a new car). I'm a single mom of 3 kids and I feel stretched enough as it is.

    My questions:

Considering everything I mentioned, is this settlement standard?

Is there any chance of getting this figure increased?

    What's a Pre-Tax Adjustment?

Is getting legal help worth the trouble? If not, what other options do I have?

    Any advise?

So basically, what should I do now?

    Base Value $3,973.00
    Condition Adjustment $-127.00
    Pre-Tax Adjustment $-1,541.33
    Tax $216.71
    Total Value $2,521.38
State and Local Regulatory Fees $14.00
    Post Tax Adjustment $0.00
    Less Deductible $500.00
    Less Percent Negligent 0% $0.00
    Less Retention Amount $0.00
    Net Settlement Amount $2,035.38

Thank you for your time! Stay safe.

How long for response to a simple status update?

    Posted: 28 May 2020 01:27 PM PDT

Had water in basement. Almost immediate response from adjuster after submitting claim.

    Remediation out two days later.

Then a contractor 10 days after the remediation was done to take measurements, pictures, and write up cost estimate for repair.

That report goes to an independent third party, Alacrity.

Emails/a call to the adjuster have gone unanswered since the contractor was here. Our house/garage is a mess and needs to get back in order, spousal stress rising.

Are adjusters sitting 200 deep with claims/calls/emails and just can't typically check in for 4-5 business days?

Did the spouse screw us because she mentioned she wanted to use our own flooring installer to the assigned contractor? (Remediation guy warned us we'd be slowrolled into the back of the line because we'd be taking $ from his pocket - warning came after spouse had already said something).

    Car insurance noob question

    Posted: 28 May 2020 01:09 PM PDT

Hi Reddit! I'm a 25 year old male who's Geico recently went from 190 a month to 125 a month on my birthday, so yay!

I am currently hitting all the state (CA) minimums for bodily injury and uninsured.

Should I just rest on my laurels of having survived to 25 years old? Or should I up all my coverages. I was fiddling with the Geico app and I can get some absurdly large numbers (1 million/1 million bodily injury) and stay beneath my monthly charge of 180. What should I do?

Are older cars (1995-2005) cheaper on insurance?

    Posted: 28 May 2020 10:40 AM PDT

Just got my license. Which type of cars are cheapest to insure? As a new driver I prefer an older car between 1995 to 2005, is that a good idea? I understand a 1960s sports car will not be cheap on insurance but I am genuinely wondering if a 2010 car is cheaper to insure than a 2005. What are some hacks to get cheap insurance? Thanks. Can/Ab

    Hearing Screening invoice

    Posted: 28 May 2020 04:33 PM PDT

Hi from the beautiful Republic of Texas, I hope y'all are doing well. Last year we welcomed a little girl into my family and as part of the routine tests, the did the hearing screening. A few months later I got a notification stating the Screening provider was appealing UHC's decision not to cover the procedure ($350). I called UHC, knowing that for my plan out of network procedures are covered as long as an in-network provider requested it (I had a similar issue with my first one and that was I was told). I called UHC, and they told me the provider failed to provide any information in terms of what they were billing for (or the circumstances) and if they provided the information they requested, it should be covered. The claim adjuster told me she was requesting that information again. And that was it.

Two days ago, I received the invoice from this providers requesting me to paid the full amount. I work in the Travel Insurance side, so while I know a bit on how things work (especially internationally), I'm lost about how to proceed understanding the regulations in each state. Could you let me know what would be the best course of action? Thanks!

Upcoming doctor visit but I'm uninsured.

    Posted: 28 May 2020 04:17 PM PDT

Illinois So I have a follow up visit with my doctor next month for a prescription refill, but due to covid I've lost my job and my health insurance. Once I became uninsured I went onto healthcare.gov and got signed up. A few weeks later they sent me the available plans and enrollment instructions, but my regular pcp wasn't available under the coverage.

I have a new job but their health insurance doesn't start until about 60 days from the hire date. What are my options? I need my medicine :(

    Will my insurance go up?

    Posted: 28 May 2020 04:10 PM PDT

I live in San Francisco, CA, USA.

I bought my car January 2018. I had an accident where I was at fault in January 2019. I was hit by another car trying to change lanes (moving into my lane) in July 2019. Initially, I was paying around $400 (for 6 months) to cover my car. After the January accident, my rate went up to $600. The guy who hit me, his insurance (which happens to be the same as mine, GEICO), didn't pay because they couldn't get a hold of him to talk about the accident. (I wrote about this on another sub.)

My question is, I've already been dinged for the accident where I was at fault, will getting my car fixed further increase my premium? At the very least, I should be able to fix the dent in my car for the accident where the guy hit me without any consequences, but since I've already been penalized for hitting the January guy, I think I should be able to fix this also without any problems?

I'm new at this and I'd like to know if my reasoning is right before I proceed.

    Thank you.

Uncharted Territory - Bankrupt Rental car companies

    Posted: 28 May 2020 04:02 PM PDT

I got rear-ended ~25 days ago by an Enterprise Rent-a-car customer, and the underlying insurance was the one they purchased from Enterprise. I have dashcam footage of the other car rear-ending me, and there is zero doubt that it is their fault.

So I've been dealing with Enterprise in terms of them covering the repair. They sent an appraiser to come up with a repair estimate back on May 7th, and he told me I would receive the estimate in ~1 week.

After this, the Enterprise insurance person I was in contact with went AWOL. Couldn't get a hold of him and he wouldn't respond to emails. He finally got back to me today saying that the repair estimate was done but their "coverage investigation is not complete".

I feel very comfortable that I am legally not at fault (the video evidence is very conclusive), so I am not worried about that. What happens if Enterprise goes bankrupt, in the same way Hertz did? Am I out of luck then and they're no longer liable for the damage?

    Edit: Location is New York.

    Car Insurance Question

    Posted: 28 May 2020 09:20 AM PDT

Hello, I hope all of you are well and staying healthy! I have a car insurance question.

I am moving in with my girlfriend in July and I have a car, she does not. At times she will be driving the car with my permission, I don't anticipate too often. Is it worth it to include her as a secondary driver on my auto insurance or given the infrequent use of my car, would it be acceptable to leave her off the policy and have her covered under myself?

I hope this is clear, and we are in the state of NY as I know the regulations can vary state-to-state

Involved in an at-fault minor accident. Should I pay out of pocket?

    Posted: 28 May 2020 03:12 PM PDT

I was changing lanes, and a truck (Ford F-150) going over the speed limit clipped me. I called the cops and reported the incident to Progressive as well. It was determined that I was at fault by both, even if he was speeding in his lane. Since, he and I share Progressive, it has been determined that I will be paying for his repairs. Fine.

I come home to see that thankfully my car only had rubber swipes from the tire of the truck and one small dent that I can fix myself. The truck had just a small nick on his fender liner, as most of the contact was between his tire and my car's body. I checked online how much does a new liner for the truck costs and it is about under $100.

I have one at-fault accident in my history in Sep 2015, and I was looking forward to having lowered rates on my Insurance in a few months.

I have the following questions now,.
    - Should I settle with the guy out-of-pocket if he agrees?
    - The guy wants to repair the liner via the Insurance, so who will be paying the deductible?
    - If out-of-pocket is agreed upon, can my Insurance agent help me in guiding how to do it?
    - I am at fault in this minor accident, but will closing the claim, if he agrees on out-of-pocket, help reduce my insurance rates for the future?
    - If I let Progressive settle it, will this show up as a minor incident on my record, and not increase my rates by like $50/month?
    - What is the best route to follow?

Damage to his rear fender liner, as he claims - https://imgur.com/a/pD9N5cX

P.S.: I am in Texas, and currently paying $900 for 6 months.

Premium increase after someone hit my parked car?

    Posted: 28 May 2020 02:04 PM PDT

Hello all, my parked car was recently bumped and the bump-er did not leave their info. I've been going around town getting quotes at body shops to send to my insurance (State Farm) for the damages. The quotes have varied enormously!

At one shop, the guy told me that State Farm can't legally raise your premium after a bump like this (first ever claim) where the repairs cost less than $2,500. Is this true? Does this vary from one state to the next?

Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Dental work is going to cost me $7,000 out of pocket with insurance. Is there any alternative? Different dental insurance or negotiation or anything please

    Posted: 28 May 2020 12:57 PM PDT

There are 4 root canals and a bridge that needs to happen as they're causing pain so its not something I can put off for more than a month really.

Is there any way for me to find a new dental plan that will cover more of the costs, or really any way to help with this? It's a devastating cost for me.
