    How do you stomach LinkedIn?

    Posted: 13 May 2020 09:41 AM PDT

I have a small consulting firm. I recently got a lecture from my marketing person for not engaging in LinkedIn.

Problem is I despise the LinkedIn feed. The content is garbage--i can spend 10 min scrolling and not one engaging post to interact with.

I guess I should just focus on posting myself and engage within my own posts?

Looking for tips from those of you biz owners (NOT agencies/gurus) who manage their own LI presence on a regular basis without vomiting.

What's your favorite book about dealing with employees?

    Posted: 13 May 2020 11:03 PM PDT

Ideally it would cover all the knowledge needed to deal with people and get them working effeciantly, but i'd settle for something that just explains how to deal with employees more on the disciplinary side of things.

I work with my wife and we are constantly at odds about what is acceptable, what is grounds for firing, how many chances etc... we need a road map we can both just try to stick to. Guess i'm looking for an HR 101 type thing maybe?

It's by far the weakest attribute as a business owner. Advice about how you deal with difficult employees, particularly when the workforce pool is limited, is very welcome.

    Disaster when loan forgiveness starts?

    Posted: 13 May 2020 08:26 PM PDT

Does everyone else predict a bit of a disaster/mess when loan forgiveness is decided? You have all these millions of businesses which received the ppp loan, and are now going to be told whether or not the money is forgiven or not. And the 'rules' by which forgiveness is done is STILL not entirely written out, and there are so many 'but what if' situations.

Anyone need free social media graphics and/or advice on optimizing their website?

    Posted: 13 May 2020 01:48 PM PDT

I manage a small e-commerce business and have been getting heavily into graphic design - I'd like to offer free graphics to the small business owners on here if you'll allow me to use that work in my portfolio. I've been working a lot less recently due to the stay at home orders, so I want to keep busy - I thought this might be a nice way for us to help each other out.

I'm particularly good at making social media graphics and anything layout-based (so flyers, announcements, Instagram posts, etc), so let me know what you need and I'll see what I can do for you.

I've been working in retail and e-commerce for most of my career, so if anyone also wants practical business advice from some rando I'm available. I prefer direct, pragmatic solutions that serve the customer (as opposed to generic one size fits all advice), so if you want me to take a look at your site and see where it could be improved, let me know.

    Unemployment claims bleeding me dry

    Posted: 13 May 2020 06:59 AM PDT

EDIT: Thank you all for your wisdom and advice! I really appreciate so many folks educating me & helping me breathe a sigh of relief. I'm going to stop worrying about the dollar signs on these forms and start focusing on how to take care of myself. Thank you again!

    —————-

My business is public facing. We lost all potential for revenue in the middle of March. I did the right thing, and on top of a generous severance package - made sure to get all of my employees signed up for unemployment as soon as I could.

Fast forward two months, it doesn't really make sense for me to hire 7 people back. We literally have no job to do while people are social distancing.

I applied for the PPP, but now I'm being hit with thousands of dollars in unemployment claims. From what I understand, PPP can't be used for that.

Colorado does not have any unemployment cost assistance for businesses who are not essential and were forced to stop operating. I really don't know what to do to ensure that I am not held personally liable.

If I close the entire business down, I want to know that my people can still get govt assistance. I would also like to end up with at least a few months rent after three years of blood sweat and tears...

I figured with the ridiculous amount of money going to fund businesses cough Harvard cough there would be some sort of UE assistance for nonessential companies.

I've heard that a lot of people are using the PPP to hire friends and family members. Can I use it to hire myself so I can afford to pay UE costs out of pocket without losing everything?

Do the same number of people have to be hired, or does the same amount of money in payroll simply have to be spent?

Two months later, many of my employees have other jobs or are now making good money on unemployment - asking them to come back for two months of PPP pay and then to be let go again doesn't make any sense when we have no job to do.

At this point I've given out 70% of our remaining liquid capital to take care of my people, and just want to know that I am protected. Does anyone know of any way I can avoid having my entire checking account emptied because of covid? Was the right move really to be selfish?

I've already come to terms with wasting the last three years and having to shut my doors, but at this point I really don't want to lose everything for doing the right thing.

Going from invoices based on hours spent to every single task completed

    Posted: 14 May 2020 02:10 AM PDT

    Hi r/smallbusiness

I have recently been asked to change my way of pricing my services, from simply noting how many hours I am spending underways, to coming up with a price upfront, so that my client can decide what tasks to complete.

I make tutorials for a large company, but in a branch with a somewhat limited budget.
As I write above, I've been asked to give them a price upfront, so that they can pick which tasks they want done.
I am on somewhat bare grounds in terms of what I am going to ask.

An example of what I have come up with so far is:

    Expected hours (x) 10
    Hourly salary (y) 180
Higher price due to risk of inaccuracy 1.25
Use of gear and software 1.10

So with the example above, 10*180*1.25*1.10 = 2,475

Is this the wrong way to do it, or do you have any suggestions on how to do this better?

Thinking About Opening a Boba Shop

    Posted: 13 May 2020 09:28 PM PDT

Hello everyone. I'm thinking about opening an actual brick & mortar boba shop. Currently, I am selling my boba drinks at local farmers markets and events throughout my city out of a food tent/booth. In the year of being in business, we've been quite successful and have been building a name for ourselves. Our biggest selling point is that we don't use any artificial ingredients, powders, or syrups. Our teas are brewed fresh using loose leaf and our fruit teas are juiced fresh. My next step is to open a brick & mortar, however, the unknown cost and work scares me. Also, while I currently work in the boba tent/booth, I want to eventually transition into an "entrepreneur" and not continue as a "worker." Anyone with experience and/or advice who can share, please do so.

Our small family bakery is expanding into wholesale for local cafes, schools, and restaurants. Is there free or easy-to-use ordering software available to make this transition easy?

    Posted: 13 May 2020 10:13 PM PDT

I'm not entirely sure what to Google search for, or I would start there - I am managing the front of house of a bakery for my father (Head Baker). In less than six months, our presence in the community has exploded and our reputation has made it out to local cafes, restaurants, and schools.

We use Xero for accounting, but other than that, I run pretty much everything else using Excel spreadsheets. As we will have a sales rep on the road one day a week soon, and be offering wholesale ordering to new clients, I was wondering if there is any useful (preferably cheap) software that can allow us to take orders and show potential clients lists of product.

Also happy to take any other software suggestions you might have! Thank you.

Lease discounts from IWC / WeWork / Regus / Spaces etc., possible?

    Posted: 14 May 2020 03:34 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

I was hoping to connect with some of you who are leasing out an office from any of the big workspace providers. I would like to understand how much of a discount it's possible to negotiate during Covid-19 situation and how.

My friends who have companies and rent directly from landlords get discounts up to 50% or even more. I am not using the office in last 2 months AT ALL. I pay 2k USD every month now for literally nothing. Yet when I asked for a discount from Spaces (which is under IWC) I was provided with two options:

    1. 1 month extra if you extend for 3 months
    2. If you increase your space, you get get a better deal

Is it possible to get a discount on current lease? If not, how to negotiate better terms in the future? I cancelled my leases and I hope to re-negotiate in July for a better price when things normalize perhaps a bit. In our location, out of 95 office units, 24 are unoccupied the occupancy rate to continue going down.

Application to Funding, Less than 48 Hours Thanks To BlueVine!

    Posted: 13 May 2020 03:00 PM PDT

Thank you everyone for your recent posts about applying with BlueVine for PPP funding. I had been waiting on BofA since 4/4 with an e-mail approval finally received on 5/1 but no promissory note. Unable to get a hold of anyone at BofA for over a week, I finally e-mailed my SBA local office and was told my loan had been approved but BofA had cancelled the loan, without even notifying me. Completely discouraged and unsure where to turn, I once again relied on Reddit to guide me through this nightmare and read dozens of posts about fast, easy approval through BlueVine. Figuring I had nothing to lose, I applied and was funded. Here's my timeline:

5/11 Monday 8 AM: Applied and uploaded S-Corp 2/2020 Bank Statement, 941 and 940 forms.

    5/11 Monday 2 PM: Application Received e-mail.

5/11 Monday 5 PM: Application Submitted to SBA e-mail.

5/12 Tuesday 6 AM: Application Approved by SBA, ACh deposit expected within 10 days e-mail.

5/13 Wednesday 4 AM: Logged onto designated account and BlueVine PPP ACh had been deposited.

How is this even possible?!! I am in shock and disbelief that this happened in less than 48 hours. If you haven't applied for your PPP yet or are getting the runaround by your financial institution. Go immediately to BlueVine and re-apply there. You will be glad you did.

    U.K./London - Free IT Support

    Hi All,

I just wanted to share a post to any small businesses that may be struggling during the pandemic. My company is offering a free month of IT support to aid businesses during the lockdown.

We've noticed an increase in cyber crime since this all began and the last thing any of us need is a breach or a virus to damage us even further.

If anyone needs a free audit, or would like to discuss their current set up to see where any gaps are drop me a message. I am here to help!

Which customer retention strategy has proven effective for your business?

    Posted: 14 May 2020 02:17 AM PDT

While I do believe it's good to have a strategy for attracting new customers, I think it's even more important to have a retention strategy for existing customers.

So I'm curious to hear about different ways businesses use to keep customers and even reward their loyalty.

Business loan reporting on personal credit profile?

    Posted: 13 May 2020 06:35 PM PDT

Im hoping to get an Eidl. If I do, would I be able to turn in a "paid as agreed letter" to credit bureaus for my personal credit profile? I have been been establishing credit over the past 5 years and this would help diversify. As a sole proprietor I feel like I should be able to but I dont really know if it works like that . ?

    [Help] Managing a Team remotely

    Posted: 14 May 2020 01:39 AM PDT

Hello, can anyone recommend a non-invasive app or tracking tool that can help monitor task / hours. What are you using?

Industry: Tech / Services We are thinking of something like: Group - team managers can add members Status - members can toggle their status (busy, idle, away etc) Proj Management - proj they are working on Task - task they are working on

We dont want to risk team members by having to force them on site, ending up with premature implementation of work from home. If anyone can help it'll be awesome.

HEREOS Act proposal details in House, outlined with sources

    Posted: 13 May 2020 06:51 AM PDT

The HEROES act is currently in early stages of the House, so nothing is final yet, but at least there is discussion and good possibility about some changes for PPP. These are NOT law yet, it will take 1-2 weeks before this works itself out.

    • Changing/elimination of 75/25 rules for businesses, possibly only under 10 people.
    • Extension of "covered period" from June 30 until Dec 30.
    • Possible extension of PPP loan from 2 to 5 years to lower monthly payment for cash availability. A surplus backup for almost no interest.
    • Extension of $600 UI bonus until July 31, 2020 until Jan 31, 2021
    • Changes of Employee Retention Credit to by 80% instead of 50%, and clarity around using it additionally to PPP (not double dipping though)
    • Another stimulus check round, with fixing issues of past
    • Attempt to eliminate SALT cap (not sure this will happen, but its a Democrat goal)
    • Other stuff

    Sources, which are very readable:

Please Help With My Business Validation

    Posted: 13 May 2020 07:21 PM PDT

    Hey everyone!

I promise not to spam you for answering, if you are interested just let me know. :)

I am in the process of starting my first business. It will be a subscription type business, but for web design. I will be charging $599/month which will include hosting for one site and unlimited changes and revisions, my main target market will be small business owners who need web design, but don't want to hire an actual in-house web designer.

Potential clients will be able to cancel at anytime, and have all the code for their site that was built sent over to them.

My question to you is this, would you use this service as a business owner? How do you feel about the pricing?

What are the economics of direct mailers?

    Posted: 13 May 2020 11:04 PM PDT

I've noticed I get the same several industries in my postbox. I'm not talking about being sent through the post, but rather delivered directly by a service that canvasses the whole neighbourhood. Industries usually are:

    -Department stores

    -Chain pizzarias

    -Lawn care services

Is there a reason these industries lean so much on DMs? What kind of conversion rate can I reasonably expect from a mailer? (I run a tour operation, so I'm not expecting *any* business during COVID-19, just reassessing my marketing and this topic interested me).

Realistically when should you start reporting income tax on businesses that you are "kind to trying to get started but it hasn't really taken off yet"?

    Posted: 13 May 2020 02:14 PM PDT

I'm trying to start a new business with an idea I've recently had, but its experimental and I have to see if its actually worth committing to first. Without going into specific detail, at what stage of committing to it (and I make money) should I start reporting tax? Grey question but hey, I'm new to this and I wish to learn the do's, don'ts and the grey territory. Thanks in advance.
