Question about selling ownership stake for $1

    Posted: 12 May 2020 10:42 PM PDT

Hi there. I'm reading up on an article from my local city and found something odd. The article states that the partner sold his share of ownership to 5 investors for $1 each and then granted a $1.8mil mortgage to one of them. Is this common practice? The property in question was purchased several years ago for 4.5mil with plans to build a 400 apartment complex that has been delayed.

    https://www.newhavenindependent.org/index.php/archives/entry/201_munson/

According to city land records, on March 18, Double A Development Partners split in half its ownership of the property amongst the company's erstwhile partners, Gray and Anderson. The latter took control of his 50 percent share of the property through his holding company, Resight Holdings LLC.

That same day, Anderson sold his 50 percent share for $1 to five new investors, each of whom received 10 percent undivided ownership of the property.

Ten days later, Anderson granted Cote a $1.8 million mortgage for the property.

Why doesn't American business etiquette allow a more direct and explicit communication, e.g. if you like/dislike a colleague's idea, if your presentation was good or bad, what concrete interpersonal problems exist in a team?

179 Heavy Vehicle 33,000 GVW write off question

    Posted: 12 May 2020 03:24 PM PDT

We have a 2019 Dump Truck leased new last april. The plan was to always take over the truck at the end of lease. Instead of letting the 6 year lease go, we will be buying the lease out this month to own the truck after only 1 year into the lease. Leasing company is fine with it.

Until now we have been deducting the lease payment. When we go to buy the truck out right this month, I guess it will be considered a used truck purchase. Truck buyout will be $84,000

According to the 179 rules, since it's 100% business usage and heavy GVW we can deduct the entire $84,000 this year at this time. Is that correct? I know they haven't changed the 179 rules yet.

Are we allowed to break that down and do half this year and half next year for a write off or is it all or nothing for 2020?

We have asked our accountant and just waiting to hear back from him, we were wondering if anyone had any info on it in the meantime.

    Small business start up question

    Posted: 12 May 2020 12:30 PM PDT

I am interested in starting a small business and cannot seem to decide exactly which route I want to take. Should I start a small market garden that incorporates a CSA and farmers market sales OR open a juice/smoothie food truck?? I have weighed the pros and cons of each, though I welcome your thoughts as there may be something I've overlooked.
