How to run a successful small coffee shop?

    Posted: 25 May 2020 03:04 PM PDT

    Hello,

First of all I want to thank you for taking the time to read my post!

I will provide some context before submitting my question to you guys: I am a 24 year old guy from Varna, Bulgaria. I live in the central area of the city and own a small space there. The space was being rented out and was used as a flower shop for years. Due to the recent virus situation, the space became vacant. I have the idea to turn it into something.

I was thinking one night what does my neighbourhood lack and came up with the idea that there are no coffee shops near by. On the other hand there are 2 universities, 2 high schools and a number of small shops (groceries shops, pastries shops, home supply shops, etc etc) in a 0.5km radius (photo attached) from the location.

Do you think it's a good idea to open up a coffee shop in such a location? My idea of the place is more of a grab and go type vibe, because the space is small (13sq m = 139 sq ft). The people that live in the neighbourhood are mainly families with teenagers, young adults and some elderly people.

Please let me know what you think and if it will be a good idea!

    Red crosses are universities/high schools

Help on Analyzing a Business Ethics Case Study?

    Posted: 26 May 2020 12:55 AM PDT

    Hello everyone!

I just started a Business Administration minor, and if possible, I'd truly appreciate some advice on a business ethics case study!

By no means am I asking someone to do the work for me (i know what it asks of me!), but I just need help in understanding what the case study is about in the first place!

My job is to come up with three solutions that are Bad, Good, and Best, which I can easily do, but I do not know what the Case Study is trying to tell me.

I just started venturing into things-business, so there are a lot of terms i am unfamiliar with, so I'm truly sorry about that.

    I'd appreciate any advice!

EDIT: Added my understanding (however bad it may be.)

UST's plans to sell Primo are halted due to the existing policy in Rohanda that "formally" bans the import of cigarettes.

Ban is put in place because Rohanda's government benefits due to them having a monopoly on tobacco, and the policy/ban remains in place since there is quite a lot of pressure from outside companies.

However, at the same time, black market sales have been a thing in Rohanda, and even with the ban in place, 20% of cigarettes are American brands due to black market sales in the neighboring city of Kalanda.

Rohanda's government apparently doesn't crack down on these sales since they believe that the prices are too high to make a dent in their existing monopoly; UST has spent $8 million dollars to advertise Primo.

Rachinda propozed to Suzanne a marketing plan for Rohanda, which doubles the advertising budget and increases the price that Kalanda distributors buy Primo. Argument made by Rachinda is that UST can capitalize on making more money.

Now, here's where I am confused.

" He asserts further that the plan will not produce higher prices in Kalanda since the smuggling distributors will not have to raise prices, thus ensuring that the nonsmuggling distributors will be unable to do so. Finally, he maintains that the plan is consistent with the established practice of Rohanda's government, if not its formal policy. "

Im a bit unsure of what this means.

    --

From my poor understanding, what is exactly wrong with this decision ethically? I have a big feeling I am underthinking this.

How low can a startup company let their bank account drop before they lay off/furlough employees?

    Posted: 25 May 2020 01:32 PM PDT

My Silicon Valley high-tech startup company furloughed their employees. They said that they failed to find another round of investment, and they will keep trying while in the furlough situation.

The company is at ~50% in their product development, no product yet, and they had some trouble finding investors even before COVID. I am sure that they desperately tried their best and were holding it for as long as possible before furloughing employees.

How many weeks/months of operational expenses would the company be at when they would have to furlough employees in such situation (hoping to stretch time and come back later) ?

I am just trying to evaluate how long can they survive in such furlough situation.

Running entirely out of money, having large portion of furloughed employees lose hope and leave to other companies would be factors in shutting it down entirely, as far as I understand the situation.

How long such furlough might last before they pull the plug?

Build startups like a poker player

    Posted: 25 May 2020 01:17 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I'm a former semi-professional poker player who has been working in tech for over 15 years, most currently as COO at a marketing tech startup in Santa Monica. I did an AMA for r/Entrepreneur almost a year ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/Entrepreneur/comments/dmi7ge/im_derek_kwan_coo_at_an_ai_marketing_tech_startup/

I thought a lot about the frameworks and mindsets that are needed to make decisions in the imperfect information world of poker, and how it would be extremely applicable to building startups.

Being able to think probabilistically, think long term, and not be results oriented are critical skills needed for founders and startup employees. I wrote a book about this, and I've made it free to read on Amazon until Thursday May 28th! I think this community will enjoy the book, it deep dives into these frameworks, and gives fun poker examples and real life business cases including Netflix, Airbnb, Uber, and more.

    Starting my own Business!!!

    Posted: 25 May 2020 02:12 PM PDT

As I just graduated from Florida State University I came up with the idea of creating an oral vitamin spray that helps the bodies immune system and provides multiple nutritional benefits! I talked with manufacturers in Turkey and created a newly formulated spray that contains Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E and Vitamin B......Did you know oral absorption works 97% of the time compared to 52% in pill form. I am innovating the way people should take vitamins around the world and was wondering if anyone could take a look at my product and let me know what they think!! http://www.sprayeveryday.com/sprayeveryday

Friend wants to open a business (IBO) in my name for $500/mo.

    Posted: 25 May 2020 10:10 AM PDT

Does anyone have any input as to the risks involved?

Here is our conversation from earlier today (F is him):

F: What up F: Know anyone that wants to make extra $500/mo F: I need IBO signers for our products F: Basically i need processing capabilities from other businesses

Me: So signatories for credit accounts?

F: We would open a business in their name (Independent Business Owner IBO). And would process some of our transactions through there. The actual person doesn't have to do anything except open a business bank acct. everything else is taken care of and we ship $500/mo for about 1-2 years.

Me: What's the business? Why do you need IBOs? Risk? Who am I working with/for? Contract? Why not a percentage of gross vs. a flat $500?

F: Lol that is not this

Me: You would still be utilizing our credit though, right?

F: $500 is the going rate for this which is why it's $500. I don't use your credit

Me: What's the risk 🤔 Worst case scenario

F: None. Worst case scenario you can't process for a similar product of your own for a few years. Which you 99.9% will not have a product like this. I wasn't asking you directly tho. Was asking if you had friends. You can do it tho if you want

Me: Well if I'm going to rope friends in to something, I want to know what the risks are. Rather not destroy a friend network

Me: And would there be a contract and who would be the partner in the contract on your end?

    F: Yea there's a contract, I am the contact

Me: So you are the other party on the contract, as an individual? Or a business owned by you?

F: Another business but my personal business Going for a run. Post any questions here

    Me: What's the product?

F: In home women's laser hair removal
