Just gotta learn how to channel that hatred into a ton of formulas

Greetings from Korea!! Passed my CPA exam a few months ago, and this is from when I studied Accounting Principles, back in freshman year!

    Accounting to Landscaping

    Posted: 14 May 2020 02:24 PM PDT

So I was laid off a bit over a month ago and I have been working landscaping with my highschool drop out blacksheep brother and I have to say, im loving it.

I havent heard Align, leverage... DELIVERABLES in soooo long! I still get nightmares from how my director said deliverables when I was a young pup fresh in the meat grinder.

We smoke weed, go cut grass and talk shit. Afterwards we play tennis or fish, and I have my phone completely turned off without a worry in the world. Its a small thing, but its a testament to what I have been sacrificing so far in my career and has really got me thinking. I dont know if its a lifelong career but I havent been this happy since college. This whole covid situation has got me seriously considering doing a drastic 180 with my life.

Its not that accounting/finance is even a bad job, but there is something about in general sitting at a desk and bumbling through routine tasks, sweating down an arbitrary deadline that once the burden is lifted from you truly feels like you can breathe again, you feel like the faithful feel when they see the vatican for the first time.

So question - has anyone made a drastic step from accounting? I want to see how its gone for you

Don't Fall for the IT Audit Meme

    Posted: 14 May 2020 06:56 AM PDT

So you've been sold on an exciting opportunity in Risk Assurance or Risk Advisory. You're going to use your technical know how to help add value to the client!

    WRONG!

You just got duped into IT Audit, the most boring type of auditing. Controls testing, controls testing, and did I mention controls testing? If that sounds like fun you've never done controls testing before.

My advice, run far away. Do financial audit, tax, plumbing, anything else really. Don't fall for the IT Audit meme.

Rant: Toxic senior making me look bad

    Posted: 14 May 2020 04:17 PM PDT

I have this senior that literally writes comments that I just copied work papers without doing any work and then never gives me feedback. I'm pretty sure he blames me for all the additional hours and constantly needs to "redo" my work even though he's never asked me what to fix and majority of my work is pretty thorough.

I've asked for feedback and questions before but he usually says he's too busy or that he'll need to ask our manager.

I legit feel like I'm learning nothing and that they are purposely making me stuck at associate. This is supposed to be promotion year. I can't transfer to another team and they require stupid hours outside of busy season.

Fuck this senior 100% and fuck anyone that does this. I'll probably just find another job.

Is there anything I can do at this point? My manager seems to love this guy.

    Furlough Isn't That Bad...

    Posted: 14 May 2020 02:23 PM PDT

I know some of us have been terrified about job security the past few months. As someone who is on Furlough in public accounting, just know it honestly isn't as bad as you think.

With the extra Corona income, I'm making about the same on unemployment as I did as an associate. I have a lot of spare time to detox from tax busy season and to finish my ethics exams (thank god I'm done with CPAs). Not to mention everyone at my firm had their salary slashed.

Yes I would rather be back full-time. Yes it sucks I'm not accruing PTO. Yes I'm scared that my furlough could get extended if the economy worsens. Yes I could get promoted slower due to this. But you know what? I'm enjoying this "summer vacation". I'm not sure next time that I'll have this much time off to myself without worrying about income.

As accountants, we worry way too damn much as it is. I'm sure there's a bunch of people in my place that are too scared to post about it. I'm not sure what the future holds, but I think we'll all be fine for the next few months. Hang in there everyone! If you were furloughed/laid off, just know you're not the only one.

Edit: If relevant, I'm a tax associate at Moss Adams. Been there for about 11 months.

But real talk, how you guys in public dealing with WFH?

    Posted: 14 May 2020 05:22 PM PDT

It ends up being way more working hours since your team has higher expectations with less staff, you're stuck inside all day with no ways to go out, and tasks take way longer at times without being to collaborate with your team. Plus everyone is super grumpy.

I'm legit depressed rn, which is also impacting my ability to work.

How so many you all loving this haha?

When Oscar tells Michael about the budget surplus

    Posted: 14 May 2020 02:53 PM PDT

I can't help but be impressed with their month end process. Like damn you've already got all your accruals booked and you have solid enough numbers for the fiscal period by the last day in the fiscal period? I need Oscar to take a look at our month end processes and make some recommendations

If the whole audit workforce is currently working from home, and work is getting done, why can't auditors WFH (or from the office) more often outside of a global health pandemic?

    Posted: 14 May 2020 08:21 AM PDT

Hold on, lemme just commute 2 hours a day to and from this client.

& Yes, I know walkthroughs & counts are a real thing, hence why I specified 'more often' in the title.

    Just made Senior

    Posted: 14 May 2020 02:28 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

As the title indicates, I just made senior at a Big 4 in FS audit (have my CPA). My goal is to stay one more year (through busy season), but don't plan on staying much longer after that. So, r/accounting, I want to ask for some crazy, off the wall exit ops that you have heard of! Doesn't have to be in accounting or even business per say- as long as it pays decently well and is interesting work, I'm game! Let's hear em.

Reasonable salary for S corporation owner

    Posted: 14 May 2020 09:13 PM PDT

I have an LLC which I incorporated last year, it is my side hustle I currently make about $20,000 a year as an accountant (I am 20 years old and I have half a year of experience) And my LLC earns a net income of $15,000. My gross receipts are $190,000. I am a real estate construction business and thats why the huge difference in revenue to net income.

I plan to become an S corp to save some taxes on those 15k. BEFORE YOU SAY "YOU EARN TO LITTLE TO BECOME AN S CORP" I handle my bookkeeping, taxes and every other thing so it has no extra fees associated. Yes I know all the rules and I know an S corp is more formal. The only thing I do not know is if paying myself a $6,000 salary would be reasonable for this business. Given that this is just a side hustle and that I have a full time job, $6000 which is about 25% of my job income seems reasonable to me.

What are your opinions? I dont want the IRS 2 years from now telling me I owe them taxes.

TL;DR I want to know if $6,000 is a reasonable salary for my business netting $15,000 a year.

Be completely honest: Do I have any place in accounting?

    Posted: 14 May 2020 07:47 AM PDT

Student here. Taking time off from school during COVID. I've completed sophomore level accounting and been debating hard whether I'm going to continue. Be completely honest. I have other potential career paths and you wont hurt my feelings.

First, the material came very easy to me. I understood it well and passed with flying colors.

Here's the issue: accounting is a fast paced field, and I am NOT a fast paced person. Every job listing is "fast pace" this and that. I am a slow, methodical, quality over quantity person. I produce great work but I dont do it quickly. I've been fired from or had to quit every fast paced job I've ever taken. I cant build speed. I already know what my reviews for B4 will be. "Too slow. Faster faster faster."

Also, I have adhd that I cant take meds for. I cant f***ing sit still. Any time I'm in a chair at a computer I have to get up and walk around every 20 minutes. My restlessness would likely drive my coworkers and managers insane.

If accounting isnt my bag, no biggie. A college in my city offers a non-profit management masters that I am interested in. I currently work in non-profit and love it. My work environment is quality over quantity and it suits me. That said, accounting does interest me and frankly, I could use the $$$ and career advancement. It'd be nice to be able to afford a decent escort too.

How sociable do I have to be to get a B4 Tax offer?

    Posted: 14 May 2020 02:14 PM PDT

I go to a B4 factory, but it's also a really fratty school so I'm worried that I won't have the right personality to fit in and get hired since that's my competition.

It seems like most people who want a B4 offer get one from my school, but I've been told that the people who get rejected usually get rejected because they were awkward. Does awkward here mean you're just not charismatic enough, or does it actually mean that you're actually really socially awkward? Not sure how high the bar is set.

MacBook or Windows Computer? Does it matter?

    Posted: 14 May 2020 04:38 PM PDT

I'm currently an accounting student going into my junior year and I have done a lot of research about which computer would be best for me as I move forward in my accounting career. I've seen some people say it doesn't matter which brand, apple is fine to use just run bootcamp, or Microsoft is better.

Could anyone please advise? Should I buy the new MacBook Pro or should I get a windows computer if accounting programs run better on a dell/Lenovo/Microsoft laptop?

Best time to transfer offices? (B4)

    Posted: 14 May 2020 05:15 PM PDT

I am a first year associate at a Big 4 firm in the northeast market. I've been working for 7 months now, so not very long. Lately I have been thinking about asking to transfer to another office, either in Texas or California, as I have lived in the northeast for my entire life and want to experience something new.

I do not think I would ask to transfer now because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but I was thinking possibly asking at the end of next busy season. But I was also thinking this could potentially affect my promotion timeline, so I am not so sure.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
