Depressed, and unsure what the fuck to do

    Posted: 09 May 2020 11:17 AM PDT

Edit: Thank you for the kind responses. I know we're all in this together right now. I'm just emotionally spent, and probably need to be on some form of medication honestly.

I am an artist at heart, and when every path I picked failed, I decided to get an accounting degree. It was a poor decision as I didn't really love accounting, but felt I needed to be a big girl, and get a sensible degree.

I'm in the middle of preparing to start my masters (I get my bachelors this semester) as I live in a state that requires a masters before you move forward with the CPA exam. Though, I plan to take it simultaneously through Colorado.

I recognize this may not be the place for this, and I should probably just get on my depression meds again, but after the Covid mess, I moved back into my parents house at 28 to finish my masters. I've never felt this suicidal before. It feels like I'm just existing.

Is this what my entire career will feel like? I feel like I've fucked my entire life up. I keep justifying it with "An MBA means you can do anything!" When the reality is, if I wanted to get into advertising or something else, I'd have to have a degree specific to that, since that's the first thing employers are going to select. My internships for this summer dried up anyway.

I think Forensic accounting is pretty neat, but recognize I"m going to likely have to work audit before I get there. I don't know if my mental health can handle 80 hour weeks. I have good grades, and am sitting at a 3.6 and Cum Laude, and honors. But I've never been unraveling more.

It doesn't help that I broke up with my boyfriend of 5 years a month ago.

I thought I'd be happy graduating. All I feel is dread.

Accounting harder or easier in real life than in school?

I heard some said it's easier in real life because most of the stuff has been automated.

    Public accounting salary progression

I'm tired of people acting like public accounting is the worst possible choice ever. I would like to know people's salary progression in public accounting?

Single day client visit, 6 hours round trip, firm not putting us in a hotel: Is this normal?

    Posted: 09 May 2020 12:29 PM PDT

Just started a small regional firm at the beginning of the year. Travel has been lite so far because of corona but we are back at it next week. I have to go to a client for one day that is 3 hours away. I am expected to drive in the morning, work all day, and drive back that night so I can be at the office the next morning.

Is this normal? Most firms I interviewed with said anything >1.5 hrs one way and the team will be in a hotel.

CPA firms pay for becker, cool, but when do you get it?

    Posted: 09 May 2020 04:40 PM PDT

Here is my understanding: once you've accepted a full time offer, you get becker.

But I've also heard other people talk about firms reimbursing them for becker. Still cool.

But I've also heard people say how the firms get a discount for becker, and you dont get reimbursed for the full price.

How does this process actually work for a top 10 national firm?

I want to take the exams before starting with the firm, but also want to make sure I'm paying as close to 0 as possible.

Anyone here still waiting to find out about their B4 start date?

    Posted: 09 May 2020 12:34 PM PDT

So I've just graduated (hooray) and am studying for the CPA exam, but since school has ended I can't help but think about starting at B4. Me and many others from what I've seen were supposed to know our start date, but don't know when yet. Anyone else here in the same boat?

    Schedule D form

    Posted: 09 May 2020 09:50 PM PDT

Hello, I am wondering how can I include Schedule D(Form 1040) information on my tax filing? I incurred a capital loss last year from short-term investments. Will these carry these over to next year? I am currently using TurboTax to file. For anyone with experience with TurboTax, will I have to pay for the paid version, or is the free version is fine? Thank you!

How accommodating is the accounting industry for physically disabled workers?

    Posted: 09 May 2020 02:16 PM PDT

About me: - Currently have a disability, cannot wear heels or flats, have chronic back pain. - had a bad accident, was in surgery a few times totalling up to ~24 hours

    • going into second year of university, specializing in accounting

    • really involves within my school community, a director for my student union + vp of external for a finance club

    • 3.75/4.00 cgpa -> is this enough? I'm not sure what the cutoff is for accounting

Concerns: - will firms not hire me because of my disability? - how do they accommodate you if you get hired? - do you disclose that you have a disability right away? Mine is a bit invisible but I do have a small limp. - I'm scared of the long hours during busy season and afraid my body can't handle it

Any opinion/advice is welcomed, thanks in advance!

Likely to start out working from home in the fall?

    Posted: 09 May 2020 08:40 AM PDT

I'm starting at a Big 4 in NYC in the fall and I wanted to know what everyone thoughts were about them starting us off working from home. I was planning on living near Long Island City to have a really short commute but if we're starting out WFH I figured I could save some money on rent and live somewhere cheaper. Thanks!

    Interesting Offer

    Posted: 09 May 2020 09:36 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I just got a job offer. The business has not been opened yet and my potential boss is hoping to officially opening it next month. I'm very grateful to get this job offer. However, I'm just concerned about a few things.

My potential boss has been working in the industry for around 2 decades. He said he was a controller for a few companies. He is proficient in QuickBooks but he does not have a lot of Tax experience. He is hoping to offer advisory and Tax services. I'm graduating this week. I had two tax internships but that's it. He is not going to hire someone else. I'm just scared that I don't have the experience and knowledge for this position. I'm willing to work hard and learn but I think I won't be able to learn much from him about Tax.

Is it possible to teach myself to be more proficient in preparing tax return? To the extent that I can do it for people? I really don't want to turn the offer down either. It would be hard for me to get another opportunity with my circumstances. Any advices?

    No extracurricular activities

    Posted: 09 May 2020 01:42 PM PDT

What do you guys talk about in interviews with no extracurricular activities. I transferred into my state school which is a target school for the big 4 my junior year so I didn't really get a chance to get involved in anything apart from joining the accounting association which we do nothing really. I have a 3.4 GPA but I feel like that's what hurts me in interviews. Any suggestions?

A few questions about IT audit

    Posted: 09 May 2020 05:28 PM PDT

Sorry if some of these are commonly asked questions. I've done some searching on this sub but have not been able to find the exact answers I'm looking for.

    1. How is IT audit related to accounting at all? I see it talked about on this sub a lot but I don't see how it relates to accounting and not strictly IT or computer science. As far as I'm aware it is mostly internal control testing?

    2. Is IT audit client based like regular audit? Or is it a branch of internal auditing? Or is it just a broad term that can be used for either client-based or in-house roles?

    3. Does IT audit at say a big 4 firm still have good exit opportunities? I think I am most likely going to try and do financial audit once I graduate, but am just curious to explore other career paths.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. TYIA

Wrapping up my degree this week. Got sponsored by one of the Big 4 to complete a master's with a data and analytics focus in 2019. I remember coming in here to ask about a program and couldn't find anything so anyone wondering about the program, or data and analytics can inquire.

    Academic Advice (UC Berkeley)

    Posted: 09 May 2020 01:29 PM PDT

Hey all - hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Just had a couple academic questions related to accounting.

I'm currently an undergraduate student at UC Berkeley, but because Berkeley doesn't have an accounting major I'm considering studying economics and data science, but I don't really enjoy econ classes as much as I enjoy accounting classes, do you think it's worth pursuing both econ and data science because they are well known at Berkeley - in this sense, does my major matter a lot for a career in accounting or does my GPA + coursework matter more in terms of recruiting?

Also, because there is no accounting major, I'm considering taking a bunch of accounting classes at Foothill College online for CPA eligibility and just to take specific courses in Excel and Financial Statement Analysis. Has anyone taken any classes at Foothill online or at De Anza online and can speak to the difficulty of these classes and getting these classes to count towards your college units and CPA eligibility?

    Thanks in advance!
