Want the Chill Accounting Life? Join the Military. Posted: 12 May 2020 01:59 PM PDT Hello all! Hope you like my click bait title, but it's actually true. If you do a few years in the military right out of high school (or college), you can get that delicious GI Bill benefit and then get out. You can join the Air Force and have a chill time for a few years, doesn't even have to be the Marines or Army. THEN, after you get out, you get your accounting bachelors (or masters) for free with the GI Bill. You even get a yummy housing allowance that can be thousands of dollars a month while you study tuition free. While studying, apply for accounting Pathways Internships in the Federal government on USAJOBS. You will get veterans preference for your service AND even more if you have any kind of VA disability, which a lot of military have. You're basically a shoe-in for a Federal government job. Pathways allows you to work a few years while you are in school for an agency, and when you graduate you get converted to a full-time civil servant unless you royally screw up. Oh, and while you're just an intern you get FULL benefits and can get paid up to $53k a year! Once you're in the GS system, you get fast, automatic promotions to either GS-12 or GS-13. Starting is $77,000 for GS12, $91k for GS13 (my agency goes to 13 automatically). Raises every year or so. So after a few short years you are taking in a VERY decent salary. Plus you work 40 hours a week maximum. Plus you get a sweet pension at the end of it. Plus great health benefits and 5% matching 401k contributions. Sounds horrible, right? If you're good and make GS15 one day, you can get paid up to $160k a year. So just be lazy and do the military/Federal government. Screw public accounting...it sounds worse than the military. You don't even need the CPA to work for the Feds and make it to the top! Who needs that? (I got mine anyway, so don't even start). Thoughts? tl;dr: Do military, get GI Bill, get veterans preference, apply for federal government job via Pathways program, become GS, get rich, feel sorry for public accountants. How do you think this pandemic will affect the future of Public Accounting? Posted: 12 May 2020 07:29 PM PDT With the recent news that Twitter has allowed its employees to work remotely forever (meaning post COVID as well) I'm curious all of your thoughts on how this will affect public accounting. Personally, it seems to me that if clients are struggling to return their own employees to the office (if they even want to), it will be a long time until there are desks available at the client site for auditors/consultants. In other words, the "travel to the client" model is shut down for at least a year likely. In addition to that, if the client is allowed to work from home, they won't even be in the office to travel to. Next, there is the whole "face time" debate. Now that everyone is working without someone over their shoulder, how does the "bill 12 hours a day" culture change? How would the firm even know that productive employees are really only working 6 hour days? [link] [comments]

Exit Opportunities from Big 4 Tax + How to earn 6 figures Posted: 12 May 2020 08:09 PM PDT Hi. I'm starting out as a Tax Intern at Big 4. I'm just seeing the exit opportunities being in big 4 tax could provide for me if I plan to leave in the future. I plan to get a CPA and master's degree. Additionally, I would like to earn 6 figures some day, quickest possible if I can. I would like to just listen to yall's experiences and opinion on these, as I've been curious!

First steps for self employed bookkeeping! Posted: 12 May 2020 07:04 PM PDT I am hoping to help my dad out with his business. He has been self employed for more than 25 years but has never properly taken care of his bookkeeping. I am not an accountant but I think I can at least help him out! He is the only employee of the business. My thoughts are • ensure invoices get mailed out or delivered. (This has been a problem in the past) • keep track of who has sent in payment • consolidate (monthly?) material/labor costs I am only just starting out and hoping to get things in order. What other factors and programs should I consider? [link] [comments]
Posted: 12 May 2020 05:08 PM PDT I'm a financial services auditor at a top 10 firm in NYC. I went home and haven't been in the city for 2 months now. They haven't given me time frame to when they would want me back in the city. My lease is up at July 31 and If I could get away with a few months of not paying rent that would be great. Does anyone know when bank offices may open or have a better gauge on when firms may start opening up in the city again? [link] [comments]
This app helps you track your time on your projects Posted: 12 May 2020 08:52 PM PDT Hey r/Accounting, My name is Sasa and I created this app that helped me track my time on my laptop. I ended up showing it to my friend who is an accountant, and he really liked it. I thought you might like it too. If some of you would like to use it please let me know DM me/comment here so I can contact you when I finish it 😀 I haven't finished everything yet, but I'm planning to add the following
I know that the guidelines say no self promotion, but this is something that helped me and I wanted to share it with you! [link] [comments]

Posted: 12 May 2020 01:46 PM PDT I have been receiving notices from my state, and from the IRS stating that I need to do my prior years taxes. The most recent round of letters listed some of my employers and stated that based on their records, I owe roughly $10,000 in taxes, plus penalties. The directions said I could pay the fee and file my taxes, or protest an appeal. Today I finished preparing my taxes, and my prep software says that I owe close to $25,000. Now my question is, if I just wait till the IRS sends me a formal bill in the mail, can I just pay the $10,000 that the irs has been demanding from me, not file my taxes, and save myself $15,000? What are my chances of getting in trouble? What realistically are my options here? An extra $15,000 is a hard pill to swallow when they clearly think I only owe them a fraction of that. Posted: 12 May 2020 12:07 PM PDT What are your guys predictions about the Sep 2020 CFE happening? do you think it will be conducted? Apparently social distancing measures are not being lifted any time soon. The max 50 people requirement is going to be in place for the foreseeable near future. Do you think Sep CFE will happen? Also, for those in Capstone 1. Did the Cap 1 for September 2020 CFE already start? [link] [comments]
Is an accounting degree worth it? Posted: 12 May 2020 08:23 PM PDT So I have a ton of anxiety when it comes to getting a degree. Accounting is something that I have a genuine interest in. I took a class for it in high school. Obviously, I know it wasn't near as difficult as taking college accounting classes, but it peaked my interest so I thought I'd go for it. Next semester I will take my first accounting classes in college. The main thing I want in a career is just to have one that has a good chance of you getting a job in. I've heard so many horror stories of people getting a bachelor's/master's degree in a field only for it to result in nothing. Is accounting this way? Another thing is that I live in Wyoming, and accountants up here don't seem to make as much. I'm wondering if I should consider changing my career path. I'm not just choosing accounting for the money prospects but if it doesn't pay more than the average job then I don't know if it will be worth my time. I don't expect to get rich with it but I also don't want to feel like I could've gone into any other field and done better. I just want to feel comfortable and satisfied with it. I know nothing is guaranteed, and that everyone has different experiences with their own careers. I guess I'm mostly asking for people to tell me about their own experiences. Do you regret going into accounting? What do you love most about having a career in accounting? [link] [comments]
Any recommended free Excel courses relevant to accounting/finance profession? Posted: 12 May 2020 12:26 PM PDT Looking to sharpen my excel skills during this free time I have as a student.
